This week we're rolling out the red carpet for queen of the internet Amber Rose Gill, the 2019 Love Island winner turned TV personality, podcaster, content creator and now debut author, with romance novel Until I Met You having been published by saucy fiction titans Mills & Boon earlier this summer. We had the best time over at her place drinking Ginger Strawberry Cow cocktails courtesy of our fab partner Black Cow, covering everything from her childhood in Newcastle, choosing beauty over uni and being approached by Love Island, to finding her purpose, navigating the public eye (including *those* Jack Grealish headlines and her recent “coming out” tweet), the importance of representation, reiki, property, owning being an “average” influencer and why women get cancelled more than men. Not to mention, of course, the juiciest behind the scenes look at Love Island, from how it's actually all filmed and why for Amber it was really just a fun free holiday, to what she spent her prize money on and the therapy provided afterwards. We also dig deep into the problem with the reality TV bimbo stereotype and the quarter life crisis, as well as laughing like loons about red flags, the ick-factor, and why Amber is not a girl boss! Did You Know That A Mountain Peak In Colorado Inspired The Root Beer Float? Welcome to August 6th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the beer melting pot and frosty dreams. When German immigrants arrived in the United States, they introduced America to lager beers, a traditional German style. So it's ironic that lagers became popular during World War II at a time when our country hated everything German. American soldiers serving in Europe discovered the brew and loved it. Lagers had lower alcohol content than ales and came in cans, for easy transport. When the soldiers returned home, they brought their taste for the beer, as well as the tradition of drinking it from cans—something that was once frowned upon. On International Beer Day we celebrate our heritage as a cultural melting pot and the small things that never fail to bring us together! Staying frosty during the Summer heat is a challenge. Especially when it tends to stay hot well into the evening.  It was on such a night, in 1893, that Frank Wisner found himself gazing at the snow capped peaks of Cow Mountain in Colorado.  He noticed that they looked just like ice cream floating in soda.  The vision turned to inspiration and the next day he scooped creamy vanilla into ice cold root beer.  This first creation was dubbed the Black Cow after the mountain peaks, but we know them today as a root beer float.  For that we can thank Wisner's kids whose favorite drink was Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. Any other flavor combo wouldn't be the same.  On National Root Beer Float Day celebrate the soda fountain classic inspired by nature.    I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson.  Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.

The whole world is in a crisis, clearly. I do believe my experience and my knowledge of crisis PR allowed me to accept it, plan for it and deal with it the best I could. …It was just pivot, pivot, pivot.”Morris, 36, has been working in the restaurant industry for 20 years. He has owned restaurants for the last eight years, including Trevioli Italian Kitchen and Trevioli's at The Rapids downtown.“This is all I know how to do,” he said. “There were days when it was like, ‘If this doesn't work out …' I took a job for a little while around Christmastime doing construction for a guy that I know. … It was for about six weeks. It was, ‘like when is the restaurant business going to come back?'”The Chuck Williams Show streams on WRBL.com every Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST.

In this episode, I interview Craig Will, the Executive Chef and Co-owner of Tasmania's finest restaurants, Stillwater and Black Cow Bistro, and just above Stillwater is a two-year-old hotel business, Seven Boutique Accommodation. Craig is passionate about local products and the seasonal nature of Tasmanian agriculture which he describes as ingredients that speak for themselves.  Black Cow Bistro is a boutique steakhouse in Launceston. Craig took the position of Head Chef and part-owner and Black Cow opened in 2008. Two years after Craig was asked to buy a share in Stillwater, he was delighted to accept and take on the Executive Chef position of both operations. Stillwater has been upgraded as Seven Boutique was added and this has been a great help to them as it increases the growth by 25-30%. The team was awarded being the Best Tasmanian Restaurant with the THA Awards of Excellence and the Chef's hat in a prestigious Good Food Guide.  Craig says that what he loves the most in growing a small business is its expansion from a very small scale. For him, this is the best part about growing a small business.  This Cast Covers:  A restaurant with a good reputation due to excellent service became a go-to destination restaurant in Tasmania. Added a hotel business directly above the restaurant to make a change in a different approach. As soon as the hotel was added, the growth went up to 25-30%. Both the restaurants won tons of awards over the years and the latest was the Chef's hat in a prestigious Good Food Guide. Operating the business through social media is a simple yet powerful tool they can use these days. Its unique character which is all about Tasmania made them awarded being the Best Tasmanian Restaurant with the THA Awards of Excellence. The love for hospitality allowed them to come up with an idea that would bring more guests to enjoy food and their services. The importance of team management skills for the members to be in harmony. How the use of social media is relevant in today's marketing and how it would build a credible reputation.  Additional Resources:  Stillwater Restaurant  Black Cow Bistro Stillwater Seven Accommodation Deep in the Weeds Nutrition Australia  ………………………………………… Quotes:  “We've actually gone down the path of a new marketing manager, and we've taken a completely different angle and the way we market ourselves.” – Craig Will  “Social media is a huge one, a powerful tool that we use.” – Craig Will                                                     “Strive to pay that debt down as quickly as possible.” – Craig Will “Maintain the skill and the right staff base.” – Craig Will “You have to keep your finger on the pulse as well, you have to relate to your staff, and you need to be there alongside them regularly.” – Craig Will ………………………………………… Music from https://filmmusic.io “Cold Funk” by Kevin MacLeod https://incompetech.com. Quick!  Name a song by Steely Dan.  Chances are good that the song you picked is off this sixth studio album, the iconic Aja.  Steely Dan had already become a successful jazz rock group by this time, but Donald Fagen and Walter Becker created their most successful album by far with this one.By the time this album was produced, the group had been reduced to the duo who were responsible for the lion's share of the music.  Fagen and Becker assembled a large group of session musicians to make this album, including well known vocalists like Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers and Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles.  Donald Fagen has said that the album name was inspired by a high school friend whose Korean wife’s name was Aja.   Many consider this album and Gaucho, the following Steely Dan studio album, to be two of the founding albums to a genre that would become known as yacht rock.  However, the heart of this music is undoubtedly jazz. Black CowThe album starts with this song which has been interpreted a lot of ways, from a commentary on a troubled relationship to self-doubt, to  a track inspired by Thelonious Monk.  The song describes a girl sitting at a counter, and a Black Cow is a fountain drink like a Coke float.Deacon BluesThe opening lines describing the "expanding man" may have been inspired from sci-fi author Alfred Brester's 1950's novel "The Demolished Man."  The song itself is about having a name for the nerds and the losers of the world, and compares football powerhouse Alabama and their name as "the Crimson Tide," to the proposed name for the loser.  Becker and Fagen considered this song somewhat autobiographical.PegThis track features backing vocals from Michael McDonald.  The song is about an actress in a photo shoot being promised fame.  While some speculated that the song referenced Broadway and Hollywood star Peg Entwistle, Donald Fagen stated that "we just wanted a dotted half note for that spot and Peg was short enough to fit with the music."  JosieThis song finishes off the album and is a bit more influenced by Delta blues than the more jazzy tracks on the album.  This may be because the song was written well before the rest of the recordings for Aja.  The song tells about a popular girl from a blue collar town, who always creates excitement when she returns to town.  Timothy B. Schmit plays bass and is on background vocals for this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“The Lonely Man” - theme from the television series “The Incredible Hulk”Long before the MCU, we were introduced to David Banner in this weekly show, who struggled to escape the curse of turning into the Hulk when he became angry.  Bill Bixby played David Banner, and Lou Ferrigno became famous as the green-muscled Hulk. STAFF PICKS:“Free 'n' Easy” by Uriah HeepWayne's rocking staff pick highlights an underrated prog rock/heavy metal group.  This is not a single, but a deep cut off Uriah Heep's eleventh album.  “Baby What a Big Surprise” by ChicagoRob brings us this well known tune with Peter Cetera taking his turn as lead vocalist of Chicago.  Cetera was attempting to repeat the success of "If You Leave Me Now" with this song.  Interestingly, this song is the only one on the album Chicago XI to feature Cetera on lead vocals.  “I Know a Little” by Lynyrd SkynyrdBruce's staff pick was written by guitarist Steve Gaines, and features his talented picking.  This song is off the last Skynyrd album before the plane crash that killed several band members including front man Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines.  Gaines had just joined the band, so this would be his first and last studio album as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.“Cold As Ice” by ForeignerBrian's pick is a great tragic song about a materialistic woman who will some day face the consequences of her selfish ways.  This is off Foreigner's debut and self-titled album.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“The Entertainer” by Scott JoplinBilly Dee Williams starred in the biographical film "Scott Joplin," which was released in November 1977.

Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow” way back in August of 1893. One night Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, was staring out the window and thinking about the line of soda waters he was producing for the citizens of Cripple Creek when he came upon an idea. The full moon that night shined on the snow-capped Cow Mountain and reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. He hurried back to his bar and scooped a spoonful of ice cream into the children’s favorite flavor of soda, Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. After trying, he liked it and served it the very next day. It was an immediate hit.

In this episode of Propagate, we visit Brad Cavanagh from Hardhat Angus, situated in Harden, NSW. Originally from a non-farming family in Dubbo, Brad became interested in cattle as a high school student thanks to the Angus Youth program. His interest continued to grow into a full blown passion for Angus cattle, even taking him to the USA to learn more about cattle farming techniques and the all important genetics from large corporations like the Sinclair Cattle Company. These days he divides his hours between working full time at the extended family farm Oxton Park, and growing the Hardhat Angus business through challenging conditions. It's a role that has seen Brad grow as a ‘salesman', but rather than focus on the wheeling and dealing, he's more interested in being honest and upfront with customers and solving the little problems before they become big problems. He's come a long way from the kid from town who showed some cattle at high school, but that's what happens when you're obsessed. Propagate is proudly brought to you by the good folks at the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries Young Farmer Business Program. The Young Farmer Business Program is creating opportunities for young farmers and fishers to enter into or expand their existing businesses by helping them improve their business skills. The Young Farmer Business Program has been funded by the NSW Government through the Department of Primary Industries to deliver a multifaceted approach to help young farmers and fishers. One thing that Orlando has in abundance is passion. When I first met Banks a few months back I was quick to realize he had it in spades. Trying to pin down who he is or what he does is impossible. Actor, Children’s Performer, Clown, Film Maker. He is all of these things and more. In this interview we discuss all of these things but focus on his group Black Cow Jumps. I guess it could be best described as experimental or interactive theater. Actors portray themselves and include the audience as part of the performance. In addition to Black Cow he will be presenting a new experience in October called No Assumptions. Here’s how he describes it - No Assumptions - Policy, Religion, Dance and Civil Discourse brings differing mind thinkers together in a highly structured discussion about topics of our times. This is a chance for citizens of a polarized nation to civil discourse in a fertile and open space where the Venn Diagram of humanity can grow. This will happen October 24, 2019 @ 7 pm at the Winter Park Library and is free to the public. Complimentary refreshments and light snacks are served.Although these activities take up a lot of his time this is only the beginning. You can find him performing for children at the many area libraries as his characters Jiggleman and Math-U the Counting Cowboy. He has had multiple appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and currently has 6 films streaming on Amazon. My guest this week, Jason Barber, puts it like this: if you’ve been sitting behind a cow for 15 to 20 years, your mind has time to wonder about the best way to use the milk you’re producing.   The Barbers are the world’s oldest surviving family of cheddar makers. They’ve been making cheese and producing milk for over 200 years – and up until recently, conventional dairy products had done them proud.  But then, in 2012, Jason launched something very different: the world’s first and only vodka to be made entirely out of milk.    In the last 7 years since it arrived on the scene, Jason’s farm has had to ramp up production of its unique Black Cow Vodka from a couple of thousand bottles a year to between 120 and 130 thousand.   Its fans include local delis, farm shops and bars, as well as major supermarkets and – as you’ll hear – a clutch of A-list Hollywood stars.  Discover how a piece of yeast, the size of a flea, was the start of this incredible story…and how Jason and his talented business partner Archie turned Black Cow into a global brand.

The Do’s & Don’ts of Attending Creative South (From My Perspective) Are you feeling a bit stagnant in your work and desperate to get around like minded creatives? If so, then it’s time you attended a conference like Creative South. Here in a few weeks, April 6-9 to be exact, hundreds of people will invade the tiny downtown Columbus, GA area. When you arrive, there is a buzz in the atmosphere as you know you’re around the right people. Shit, the tagline is even “Come as Friends, Leave as Family,” and this couldn’t be truer. In 2015, I attended Creative South for the first time it sparked a massive swing of momentum in my life. There were several reasons I purchased the ticket because I: felt compelled to try something different. needed to surround myself with like-minded individuals who are doing what I strive to do. needed to get out of my comfort zone and get out of my little bubble in Cedar Falls, IA. All three of these were accomplished and Creative South has become an annual affair for me. I’ve built so many amazing relationships that I’m actually bringing my wife, Emily Russell, this year so she can see what the hype is about.  If you’re attending for the first time, this post is for you. Here is a list of Do’s and Dont’s to ensure you experience Creative South like a champ in 2017.  Do’s Attend All the Speakers The speakers Mike Jones and company bring in are the real deal. They’ve built or are building a name for themselves in their respected industries. Their focus is to provide you with something to act on when you leave the conference. Each year I’ve made an effort to reach out to several speakers who inspired me. It led to great conversations over lunch, dinner, etc. and resulted in some great relationships. Some speakers I’m particularly hyped to see this year are Jamal Collins, Dominque Falla, Bob Ewing, Alicja Colon and Ced Funches. Take Notes Listening is great, but these speakers are dropping gold and you’re going to want to refer back to some of the bombs they dropped. You can even take sketchnotes like Emily Carlton who I’ll plug in the workshop section. You can then share your notes on social media with the Creative South #CS17 and let people know what they are missing! In 2015, I shared my sketchnotes with Jason Craig after his talk. This led to a screen printed coffee poster collab and he also became a great friend and a mentor to me. He even hung out with me back stage last year to help me prep before my talk. Attend the Bridge Party Thursday’s opening mixer party is absolutely ridiculous and sets the tone for the conference. They shut down an entire bridge and deck it out for one epic party. There are food vendors, drinks, fireworks, great conversations and Ink Wars… Watch Ink Wars Ink Wars is held Thursday on the bridge. It’s a setup of about 5 artists who are equipped with only a small sketchbook, a large white canvas and a massive black sharpie to go to war with. The artists have 1 hour to create something based off a random topic. These constraints unleash some pretty wild concepts that’ll blow your mind. Participate / Watch Adobe Creative Jam Alright, this one is new to me and its’s replacing the beloved Type Fight...RIP. Adobe Creative Jam is an event series where creatives share a behind-the-scene peek into their processes and projects. Meanwhile, teams compete in a tournament that puts their creative skills to the test using Adobe Creative Cloud. Be sure to check it out wherever it’s hosted. The vendor hall is my best guess. Attend Workshops Some of the best value comes from attending workshops which range from hand lettering, passive income, sketchnotes, etc. Here’s a little shameless plug. This year I’m actually co-teaching a workshop with the homie Brian Manley called "Crafting Your Killer Talk." If you’re looking to get into public speaking, podcasting, vlogging or videos in general, then this workshop is for you. Sharing your brilliant and strange ideas publicly can be difficult but our workshop will: help you overcome your fear of speaking publicly give you the tools and structure to outline your ideas boost your confidence in writing and communicating those ideas I remember watching people on stage my first year wishing I could grow a pair and do the same. The following year Mike Jones asked to speak and it was the most terrifying yet life changing experience. It’s since led to me speaking at upcoming conferences like Crop and Weapons of Mass Creation. Hell, it even sparked the inspiration to start the Perspective Podcast. This workshop is about getting you on this level too as you have something valuable to share and you can make an impact outside of your art as well. Spend Your Life’s Savings in the Vendor Hall Last year I spent all my money at the Inch x Inch, DKNG and Draplin booths. You’ll find a ton of other booths sporting posters, t-shirts, pins, stickers, etc. You even will have the chance to screen print your own tee with Real Thread. I have no doubt you’ll leave with plenty of swag to plaster in your office, on your sketchbooks, laptop, skateboard or pretty much anywhere. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone If you want the full experience you gotta ditch your introverted tendencies. Being reserved and escaping to your hotel room will extinguish any chance of having any impactful conversations and epic relationships. While I’m an extrovert, I still came here all by myself in 2015 and didn’t know anyone. My anxiety was through the roof like a new kid from a small town in a massive high school. However, I forced myself to mingle and now my best friends who I talk to the most are the people I met here. You’ll get back what you put into it! Reach Out to People When you arrive, it’s going to be like you’re around hundreds of familiar Instagram avatars. Start connecting names and faces beforehand through social media so you can jump right into a conversation when you meet in person. Doing this will make getting out of your comfort zone and building relationships that much easier. Again, the speakers are so down to earth so don’t be afraid to approach them. Oh ya, try not to gush about how great they are—it’s awkward so treat them like the normal people they are. Try the Local Food There is so much great food in downtown Columbus and you have to make the effort to try it all. My personal favorites were Iron Bank Coffee Co. in the mornings, Picasso’s, 11th and Bay, Tommy’s BBQ, The Black Cow and the Loft just to name a few. I promise you will not leave hungry. Dont’s Treat it as a Business Networking Event For the love of everything good on this earth, please do not show up throwing your business cards to as many as people as possible. This isn’t the place for that shit. Build relationships and hand out some stickers, patches or pins. Get to know people and their story. I’m not even bringing business cards this year but if I did, I would only hand them out to someone if they asked me. Be a Grimey Salesman Along with throwing your business cards out to people, don’t go pushing your products and services on people either. This place is about building community. It’s not a breeding ground for you to sell your stuff. Sign up for a vendor booth if that’s the case. Be a Fly on the Wall By hanging back during the day and going to your hotel each night, you can't experience Creative South like a champ. Even if you don’t drink, that’s totally fine! This is an intimate setting and you will get your full money’s worth by investing in yourself and taking every precious moment possible to engage in deep conversations. Feel the Pressure Many people hand out cool things like stickers, pins, patches, coasters, etc. Don’t feel the pressure of needing to go all out on swag to hand out to people. Soak up the Creative South experience instead. People won’t remember you necessarily for what you handed out — they will remember you from the connection they made with you. Get Too Hungover Party away, I know I will be, but don’t miss out on speakers, panels, vendors, conversations, etc. because you were too hungover and need puke in the comforts of your room. This is a sure bet to waste your money and your experience. I understand taking a nap or recharging for a bit, but being a hungover mess isn’t going to impress anyone. Be Afraid to Get Weird in Good Taste I was a bit reserved my first year, but last year and this year are far from the case. There will be plenty of opportunities to embarrass yourself for awesome prizes. You can let loose, do karaoke, hug strangers or dance freely because seriously, no one cares and you’re even weirder playing the “too cool” game. Experience Creative South Alright, so if this is your first year then I can’t tell you how excited I am for you. As you can tell, I’m driving home the point that this place is all about the people and the motivation you will take home with you. Be yourself, but also break out of your shell and do things you normally wouldn’t like introduce yourself to one of your favorite speakers. Follow these guidelines and you'll be sure to experience Creative South like a champ! ps. Definitely, make sure to come say hey to me as I have 2 types of pizza stickers to dish out. Key Takeaways Surround yourself with like-minded individuals Familiarize yourself with people via social media beforehand Don’t be afraid to reach out and strike up a convo Participate in every social event possible Take notes / sketchnotes Take a workshop, especially mine. You’ll get back what you put into it Relationships > business cards Finally, if you need some more reasons to attend Creative South in the future, check out my friends Lenny’s Top 10 Reasons to Attend Creative South.
