Kiwis are drinking increasingly less cow's milk. Around 1.2 million fewer glasses are consumed every year, fuelling health concerns. There's been a 17 % decline in the last two decades. ABC Nutrition's Angela Berrill told Mike Hosking it's largely due to the rapid rise of plant-based alternatives. She said it could be concerning if people reduce their dairy and milk intake but don't get calcium from other sources, as there may be an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures when the younger generations become adults. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Jade: Hi Dr. Cabral. Thank you for all that you do for all of us. You're a true blessing! I have Gilbert's Syndrome and fibromyalgia. I have horrible stomache issues and all over body pain. I use CBD oil for sleeping and for the body pain. Am I putting more strain on my liver with the CBD oil? Am I causing more damage? I also drink fermented drinks and eat fermented foods. Is this good for Gilbert's? My bilirubin has been 1.8 for the last 2 years.I've gone though a lot of stress and emotional grief. I'm thinking this caused my bilirubin to be higher then before which was around 1.3. Thank you for your time. Blessings! Tiffany: Hello Dr. Cabral I was diagnosed with vertical heterophoria a couple of years ago. Even with corrective lenses it still affects me when I drive on the freeway and the dizziness makes me feel very anxious. It has only gotten worse over the years. What can I do if anything to find the root cause of this or at least relieve my symptoms. It has gotten so bad that sometimes I have to just pull over for a few minutes because of the anxiety. Thanks so much for all the great information. I listen daily! Nicole: Hi Dr. Cabral! I have been listening to your podcasts for 2 years. Thank you for you for sharing your vast amount of knowledge with your community. My question is regarding my 7 year old son. After a long journey we have finally been diagnosed with Non Classic Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia which has put his body into early puberty. For this he has been put on Hydrocortisone. After 3 months of taking hydrocortisone his hormone levels are finally dropping. This was great news except for the fact after my request to check his A1C verified he is prediabetic. Now I am at a loss. Do you have any tips for me or know of any good resources? My goal will be to focus on his nutrition as much as possible, as that is something we can control. I often think of you and your journey back to health. I know how intimidating this feels to me I can only imagine how you felt. Thank you for your time and knowledge. Jamie: Hi Dr Cabral, I was wondering if there is a difference between stomach bloat and lower belly bloat (under belly button) bloat. I sometimes find that while my upper stomach seems not bloated, I have severe bloat in my lower belly, even first thing in the morning. This bloat doesn't budge with ginger and other natural remedies (or even may still be there after defacation) What are the differences and what may cause lower belly bloat vs upper belly bloat? Holly: Hi Dr. C, hope you're well? I have one daily vice - coffee! Yes it's organic and the second is a swiss water processed decaf :) HOWEVER I'm a latte drinker and do not enjoy the taste of any of the nut milks in coffee. My go to has been Oat milk however it contains veg oils that i know are not good. My question is, would i be better off with cows milk vs. oat milk with oils? Which is the lesser of two evils? Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let's get started! MacKenzie: I don't have a lot of money but am trying to eliminate toxins from my life. Other than food and skincare/ makeup what are the most important things? It gets hard to afford EMF blockers, organic sheets, mattress, etc. it starts to add up. Andrea: Hi Dr Cabral. I wanted to ask about yellow palms. I have had very yellow tinged hands for many years and have researched many different potential causes such as Carotenaemia or Jaundice. I do consume a lot of orange vegetables in my diet but am unsure if this is really the answer. I just wanted to get your perspective on what could cause the yellowness and if there is something more serious going on to look out for? Thank you very much Kenzie: Do I need to worry about reinfecting myself with h pylori by kissing my boyfriend during treatment ? Rita: Hi, During the Detox, can I increase fluid intake, as per my weight? or just stick to the 20oz as you suggest? Can a diabetic do this? Thanks Meghan: Hey Dr C! Thanks for everything you do! I am Currently pregnant with my second baby and My first suffered from quite a bit of silent reflux and was quite fussy and a terrible sleeper. I am Wondering what I can do during my pregnancy to reduce the chances of this next baby having reflux? I believe you have previously mentioned a strain of probiotic which I think was reuteri To help with reflux? If so I see this is in the daily probiotic support by Equi Life would this be enough to help if taken through out pregnancy and breast feeding? Can you share some tips on what I can proactively do to help give me the best shot at having a healthy and reflux free baby please? Thanks so much In advance Pedro: Hi Dr Cabral! First and foremost, thank you very much for dedicating so much of your time to help people all around the world. I know you probably get a lot of these messages so you might be used to it but truly take a moment to acknowledge yourself! You've changed lives! Anyways, my question is regarding dairy. I know that you prefer organic raw milk but you're still not a huge fan of it given the size of the protein. How come in Ayurveda they had so much dairy? I know that in their times it would have been raw but isn't it still inflammatory? Do you feel overwhelmed when you see all the options these days for MILK? Cows Milk, Almond Milk, Soy Milk, Hemp Milk and more! Well it's time to break these down to see which has the most nutrition and which might just be a waste of calories! All of that in this week's podcast episode.
One of the biggest lies ever told to us was that we need cow's milk to live. It is actually slowly killing you, but you can change that starting today.
Many people choose plant-based alternatives to cow's milk for themselves or their children because they want or need to avoid dairy. Others believe these non-dairy drinks are healthier than cow's milk. But a close look at the nutrition profile of these beverages, which include milks made from almonds, soybeans or oats, shows that plant-based milks may not be as healthful as they seem. UH registered dietitian Meghann Featherstun, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, walks us through the most popular non-dairy milks, how they stack up against cow's milk -- and the potential impact on children's nutrition.
#120: Ever heard of a formula company who lists “generosity” as one of their corporate values? I hadn’t either, until I discovered Kabrita. As part of our series spotlighting female-run feeding companies, in this episode I’m interviewing Simona Irwin, the General Manager of Kabrita USA. Kabrita USA makes gentle goat milk nutrition products for little ones who don’t do well with cow’s milk. Maybe your baby has eczema or gut problems with cow’s milk foods...well in that case you might be interested in exploring goat milk as an alternative. Simona is here to chat about how and why Kabrita came to the US, how formula regulation differs in Europe and other parts of the world vs. the United States. And she’s sharing a bit more about the process of bringing some of their other products to market in her role as GM of Kabrita USA. And if you’re looking for a safe way to feed your baby goat cheese, I absolutely love the Kabrita goat cheese puffs and in our interview I’m picking Simona’s brain about this new product too. Hi there, It's Gillian here from https://DailyKetoMeals.com. You'll learn whether you should drink cow's milk on Keto or not. The short answer is… No. You shouldn't really drink milk. See, it has lots of lactose sugar. In fact, one glass of milk has 12 grams of sugar. That's almost your entire carb intake for the day! Desperate for milk in your coffee? Here's what you CAN have: Full fat cream. Add a teaspoon to your food and you'll stay in ketosis. In this week’s podcast, we discuss the health benefits of cow’s milk. Milk is often times looked down upon both in the low carb and plant based worlds, but this is a mistake in my opinion. Milk is a great source of quality protein and fat which can also be part of a healthy diet. Plant Milk vs Cow's Milk? Which is healthier for you? It all depends on what you’re looking for. If you have cow milk allergies or soy allergies then the answer is pretty obvious - whichever milk you don’t have an allergy to. The only thing you should look at in the plant based milks is the sugar content to make sure that it doesn’t have a high total sugar content. This can happen when the manufacturer adds additional sugar to satisfy the sweet tooth of the American public. I buy “unsweetened” milk and I would suggest you do that too. My personal favorite plant based milk is coconut milk and my second choice is soy milk. But you can try them out and see what you like. Or you can stay with cow’s milk as there are really no studies that show any downside to it (unless you’re allergic to it like I am). As an added Tip I included a newly (Dec 2019) published rating report of airline food and water by the DietDetective.com website. They looked at 11 domestic airlines and rated them all from 0 to 5 with 5 being the best. The water study looked at 10 major and 13 regional airlines. No more coffee or tea onboard for me. Homesteady - Stories of homesteading farming hunting and fishing
In this episode of the Podcast, we interview Rachyl Travis, of Travis Family Farm. At 9 years old, milking her first goat, Rachyl had no idea that someday she would be running a successful family farm business. A pet goat given to her at 9 years old soon turned into multiple goats, and when Rachyl wound up with 15 goats in milk, and 15 gallons of milk a day to process, she had to figure out something to do with all of the milk. Rachyl didn’t want the milk to go to waste. She enlisted the help of her older sister and together they came up with the first goat milk product: the famous goat milk soap. In June 2012, Rachyl’s Goat Milk Soap was born after family and friends raved about the soap they received as gifts and asked to buy it! Now Rachyl sells her product in many stores and farmers markets through out Rhode Island with her mom and sister at her side! Rachyl shares her story, and the secret to overcoming fear when starting your own farm business. In the latest decade, milk has gone through some rough times. Milk its perhaps experiencing its lowest reputation in the history of mankind. A food that was once praised for its role in children’s growth and as important throughout the life cycle, started its downfall when the Paleo diet came out. Currently, milk still remains quite unpopular in athletes’ perception, irrespective of the solid body of evidence attributing important benefits to its inclusion in the athletes’ diet, particularly in the post workout period after endurance sessions as we will discuss here today Dr. Lewis James who has been giving an important contribution for milk research as a recovery drink in the last years and hopefully we can clarify and increase milk’s reputation, at least among cyclists. After all, we are probably talking about the biggest bang for your buck in terms of sources of high quality protein.

It all started with her grandparents back in 1932 and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first time Gill's mum made the company's flagship Lancashire cheese. She tells us about the joys of running a family business and gives us an insight into the challenges of perfecting Blacksticks Blue, a fabulous cheese that is going down rather too easily in the studio… Jason Barber from Black Cow Vodka grew up on a farm and also has cheesemaking in his blood, but now he focuses on dairy waste rather than dairy produce. He's taken whey, an under-valued by-product and turned into an award-winning tipple. Does vodka go with cheese? Rather surprisingly, it does, very well – so much so that vodka sceptic Ollie is now a convert.
Oh, good. The new food trends are out and some of them will scare you. When giant soft drink companies kick off ad campaigns telling you that you're going to be drinking nut and seed milk, you may as well just give in. They've sent us a batch of the new "milks" you'll be putting in your coffee and on your cereal- oat, pea (yes the legume) and a few others. Let's give them a try, shall we?

Emily Thomas asks whether we’re on a slow but steady path to abandoning our pervasive, long-standing, and arguably slightly peculiar habit of drinking milk from cows. In many European countries and the US, alternative plant-based milks are growing in popularity, and cow's milk sales are declining. Is this just a blip in our millenia-old love affair with dairy, or a steady drip towards a cow's milk-free future? Three guests debate the potential effects on global poverty, the environment and our health. (Photo: Brown cow. Credit: Getty Images)
Is cow's milk bad for you? Food hacker and no-nonsense nutritionist Rosie Mansfield separates the myths from the facts when it comes to consuming cows milk and shares her hacks for people who want to avoid or limit their dairy intake.

Have you ever given your kid a hit of Calpol to help them settle down? If you're like the vast majority of parents in Britain, the chances are you have a bottle of baby paracetamol in the bathroom cabinet which has come in very handy on a few rough nights. On one of those rough nights with a sick baby, you might also have found yourself wondering if your little one could be allergic to cow's milk.In this podcast, Dr Chris van Tulleken - whose new show The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs in on BBC1 on Wednesday night - joins Steve and Rich to explain exactly how and why we a) are often dangerously casual about the use of baby paracetamol and b) often leap to the conclusion our children are allergic to milk - when there is no evidence that is the case. The reasons Dr Chris have discovered are more than a little sinister… For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

He was hospitalized for two weeks. A sneeze produces pressurized air that can explode at speeds of 100 miles per hour. In Dr. Friedman’s office, he’s seen patients come in with cracked ribs, debilitating headaches and herniated discs after sneezing. Dr. Friedman shares the best way to sneeze to protect yourself from being injured.Health Risks of Drinking Raw Cow’s MilkIf you have consumed raw cow’s milk, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says you need to see a doctor. The CDC was especially concerned that people who bought raw milk from a company called Udder Milk could be infected with a serious germ called Brucella abortus. They issued a national warning when a New Jersey woman became ill after drinking raw milk from the company. The infection can destroy the spleen, liver and heart valves and may eventually lead to death. Despite decades of government and industry propaganda about the health benefits of dairy products, unbiased science proves that cow’s milk is not healthy for humans (raw or pasteurized). Contrary to all those milk mustache ads, milk doesn’t build strong bones. In fact, research shows milk is a contributing factor to the cause of brittle bones. We are taught as children if we want to grow up big and strong we need to drink milk. Yet, children that drink milk get more chronic ear infections, have more allergies, are more likely to be overweight, and are at greater risk of diabetes. Dr. Friedman and Kim discuss why milk is not a good source of calcium and offer other, more beneficial foods the provide an appropriate calcium/magnesium ratio.Coffee Enemas Coffee Enemas are becoming trendy for health and well-being after actress Gweneth Paltrow featured an at-home device in her wellness magazine Goop. Many other celebrities have embraced coffee enemas for improving health, including Madonna and Suzanne Somers. Coffee enemas are a type of cleanse in which you insert coffee through the rectum into the colon. This therapy has been used as a remedy for everything from depression and autoimmune disease to allergies and even cancer. Dr. Friedman and Kim chime in on this latest trend and discuss the potential health risks, including infection, rectal burns, perforation, proctocolitis (inflammation of the rectum and colon) and even death. Oatmeal: Good or Bad? Research has proven oats can help lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar and reduce the risk of heart attacks. But, that isn't the whole story according to Paleo Diet advocates. They claim all grains are unhealthy and since "our caveman ancestors didn’t eat them, we shouldn’t either.” Dr. Friedman and Kim debunk this fad diet restriction and discuss the health benefits of adding oats to your diet.Sponsor:Now you can save money on your life insurance just for being healthy. What goes into our flu vaccine always has an element of guesswork. Usually the experts get it right but sometimes nature has other ideas and a new strain emerges. Dr John McCauley, Director of the Worldwide Influenza Centre at the Francis Crick Institute in London tells Dr Mark Porter about Aussie flu and how different flu strains pose risks to different groups of people. Cow's milk allergy is the most common food allergy among infants and it affects at least one in 50 babies, toddlers and pre-school children in the UK. It's an allergic reaction to the protein in cow's milk. There are two different types though and one type, called delayed cow's milk allergy, is often missed by health care professionals because it's easily confused with other common conditions. Lucy Wronka tells Inside Health her baby son George was ill for months with reflux, eczema and an upset stomach. It was only a chance meeting with a friend who recognised the symptoms that led to a diagnosis of delayed cow's milk allergy. Twenty four hours after diagnosis and treatment, Lucy says George was a different baby. Dr Adam Fox, paediatric allergist at the Evelina London Children's Hospital explains the difference between the two different types of cow's milk allergy and discusses new guidance for GPs and health visitors which are designed to improve diagnosis. One of Europe's largest robotic pharmacies is housed in Glasgow and this super high-tech hub has replaced fourteen separate pharmacy stores. It handles almost a hundred thousand packs of medicines a week and Inside Health's Dr Margaret McCartney, herself a GP in the city, reports on how this automation has transformed pharmacy services in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Click here for the show notes Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review How Does Goat's Milk Compare to Cow's Milk? "A goat's milk is meant to get a kid goat from 6-8 pounds to 15o-180 pounds. With a newborn calf, that milk is meant to help it grow from 70-100 pounds to a 1,500 pound fully grown cow. Which one of those mammals gives milk that would be more bio-dynamically appropriate for a 6-8 pound human baby? The goat milk because it's so similar to a human mother's milk." - Joe Stout On this week's episode, we're once again diving deep into dairy products by discussing different alternatives to milk as well as debating which is better: goat's milk or cow's milk? We've got Mt. Capra President, Joe Stout, joining us to share his insight into how the two different milks compare. Plus, we discuss some other interesting goat milk related topics such as: How Mt. Capra runs their goat farm and what they're doing to make it more sustainable. In the sense of casein and milk allergens, which is better cow's or goat's milk? Lactose intolerance vary with different dairy products and what causes it to happen. How Joe and his team at Mt. Capra fed their goats during the winter before using the hydroponic barley fodder system. A look at the various products that Mt. Capra creates and sells in their stores and online such as: Berry Whey Goat Milk Ghee Ingredients used to make the goat milk formula Milk on a Global Scale When it comes to cow's milk vs goat's milk. One thing to keep in mind is how each is consumed on a global scale. Goat's are much more economic; especially in third world conditions plus they have lots of nutrients and their milk is easier to digest than cow's milk. In fact, many people, especially children, are allergic to cow's milk. It's actually the no. 1 allergen for children under three years old. Milk Alternatives for Coffee and More This week in our Open Sky Fitness Facebook Group, we had a great question come up. What are some potential milk alternatives for coffee, cereal, protein shakes, and smoothies? First of all, we don't recommend anything like Coffee Mate or International Delight because they're not whole, healthy, nutritious alternatives to actual milk. What we do recommend includes: Lactaid milk Soy milk Almond milk Coconut milk Rice milk Cashew milk Flax milk Hemp milk Rob's Cashew/Almond Milk Coffee Creamer Recipe: All you need to make your own homemade cashew or almond milk coffee creamer are three ingredients: Purified water Cashews or almonds Salt For the unsweetened plain version, follow these 3 easy steps: Take a half cup of cashews or almonds and soak them in 1.5 cups of purified water with a small pinch of salt for 2 -12 hours Drain the cashews, discard the soaking liquid, and rinse the cashews. Using a high - speed blender, place the cashews or almonds in the blender and start with the lowest speed and work your way up to the highest speed until creamy. It takes about 2 minutes to completely blend the cashews. To sweeten the coffee creamer, just add either raw maple syrup or raw honey with a couple of drops of vanilla extract. About Joe Stout Joe received a Masters of Science in Clinical Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and a Bachelors of Science in Human Nutrition and Food Science from Washington State University. Along with running the farm, He has engaged in graduate studies of Sustainable Food Systems at Green Mountain College and is certified in Permaculture Design. It’s not always popular to speak negatively about commonly consumed and highly touted foods like cow’s milk and cheese from cows. But I felt personally bamboozled when I read all the research and discovered the negative effects of drinking dairy on my health, not to mention the planet and the exploitation of the animals who provide the milk. How could I have been so misled? Well, it wasn't my fault. The United States Department of Agriculture and the milk industry has spent a lot of money over the years touting the importance of milk, and marketing that message to all of us. I'm glad I realized that my daughter is not a calf- so there was no need to feed her any formula that had cow's milk. Her mother's breast milk was more than enough. But why is breastfeedig so vilified? Just to sell baby formula? I guess that's one angle, but it's starting to look like they know formulas lead to sickness. Are we sabotaging our children's health and longevity by not breastfeeding? I think we are.

Cow's milk contains calcium because cows eat grass. Calcium is a mineral that comes from the ground, which means, like grass, all green leafy vegetables are teeming with this nutrient. Let's explore the rationale behind human adults drinking another animal's milk when we don't even drink our own species' milk into adulthood. Perhaps all the calves are laughing at us, for even they stop drinking their own mothers' milk when they become adults. In other words, I think we have a lot to learn from the cows.
Our aim was to develop guidance for general paediatricians and primary care physicians in diagnosing and managing cow’s milk protein allergy in infants. The guidelines were developed by discussion based on existing national recommendations and standards, clinical experience and, whenever possible, evidence from the literature. Separate algorithms cover breast-fed and formula-fed infants. The recommendations emphasise the importance of comprehensive history taking and careful physical examination. Patients with severe symptoms need to be referred to a specialist. Elimination of cow’s milk protein from the infant’s or mother’s diet and challenges are the gold standard for diagnosis. This guidance is intended as a basis for local discussion, implementation and prospective evaluation. The algorithms should be regularly assessed using clinical audit standards. Once validated, the diagnostic framework could provide a standardised approach in epidemiological and therapeutic studies.
