from Jan 31 press conference Question “I hear there might be a mid-season change [re Scoreboard/judging oversight] in the way they do scoring is that is that possible do you want to see?” “It that just adds to the Ridiculousness right so what so the the the issue it is not that I think scores should remain unduly high the issue is that this thing we've put in place either intentionally or unintentionally has only attacked one part of scoring and it is tamped down the ceiling and done very little about anything else and so it's not Equitable across the board I'm all for credibility and scorting I'm all for uh you know increased um accuracy understanding that we are a subjective Sport and you will never remove the subjectivity I just don't think that this thing has been rolled out in a manner and it's supposed to be a pilot program and yet we're getting newsletters and we're getting we're getting told you know what the deductions are that are being missed most says who judging in venue is a different deal than sitting somewhere who knows where in a living room on a video screen and then that's that level of subjectivity is supposed to add more credibility and so I think what we have created is that with a with a targeted part of the scoring Spectrum we have judges looking over their shoulder and there's better ways to do this I I am not about like everything should get a 10 that's not it at all but there there has to be it's got to be whatever we do to increase uh credibility or or or Tamp down or whatever like no one has I've never had anyone present to me that on a consistent basis the wrong team wins or the wrong gymnast wins or whatever now you could say the score might have been too high but was it ranked correctly on that night that's the that's the real question right was it the best routine on that night and you know to the point where people SC scream and clamor enough that that you know at some point Trinity Thomas issued a public apology for getting a 10 for crying out loud here's the thing when you go to a sporting event Scott when you go to a baseball game what's one of the things you hope you see a home run what when you go to a when you go to a football game you you want to see an explosive play a long touchdown pass or things like that you hope to see those things that's sport controversy is also sport and there's nothing wrong with there's never going to be a time when we're when we're all happy with all the scores we see because all of us have biased all of us coaches fans everyone the point is is it ranked correctly is it consistent across the board and by any real objective measure we haven't created a more consistent situation this year we've created a more erratic situation here and and and I'm don't blame the judges one bit because they're doing the best they can to do the job that that that we've asked them to do there are easier ways to correct wrongs in venue and it should be in my opinion given the meat referee authority to convene a conference right now our meat referees have no authority to do much of anything um and and so in tennis the chair umpire can overrule the line judge in in uh the the home plate umpire in baseball can can walk out and call a conference if they thought something was missed at second base these are things that are common in other sports our meat refs are to sit on their hands they judge every routine and many most in almost every venue we we were required to have them but yet they really can't do anything except be a liason to deliver papers from a coach to to the panel to me if I'm if I'm an official I'm going to feel a whole lot better about somebody who's in venue with me as part of the official panel in the meet to be able if something egregious happens to be able to have the authority to walk over and say hey guys let's talk this over and and let's make sure we get this right um that's a simpler solution than than having to use technology from different angles not in venue it's a whole different ball game when you're not judging in venue and so I you know I don't want anything I say or anything live tweeted by the way I had nothing to do with that she just knows how I feel about it and and uh but she's right and and we're we're in a time where where Collegiate athletics's Olympic sports programs many are in Peril for funding and revenue share is is is coming in and scholarships are going to be moved from sport to sport all this everybody got an increase in scholarship no they didn't they got an increased limit and not every school is going to be able to do that and so at a time when when that uncertainty exists for at least 50 or 60% of our programs in our sport we drop this little poison pill into our scoring so that the fans sit there and wonder what the heck's going on so it's ill-timed it's incomplete it's illc conceived and and and it it just is and we keep having to make adjustments and now we're not going to put suggested uh deductions in the in the newsletter anymore I hear and we're not going to put those things out there we're just data collecting that's what we were supposed to be doing in the first place but and then but but there's all this information leaking about what's being looked for and what's not being taken and so it it's just been in my opinion an abject disaster and uh it was fairly predictable that it would be and I hope uh there's growing sentiment that we need to go about this a different way let's examine what we do in scoring let's try to create more accuracy yes but in a time like this we cannot be some kind of purist we can be marketable or we can be purist we're probably not going to be both and and and if we're going to be purist then let's look at the run the gamut let's look at the routine that goes 975 that should go 96 as well you know let's let's let's look at all of it not just the the the higher end scores because these kids work hard and then you see things like this you know where where kids they know they just did the best Vault their life it goes 9925 the next kid's like man what do you got to do to get a 995 I'm not even talking about a 10 Helen Hu should have got a 10 Helen that beam set is the best beam set in the country and she did it flawlessly I dare anybody to tell me where the real deduction was now I was standing I wasn't sitting where the judges were and I'm not questioning their credibility I'm questioning our judgment as a coaches group for for doing this thing that has just created some pendulum swing back and forth where the judges keep trying to find themselves and it's it's just unfortunate so thanks for putting me on my soap box I mean it's not affecting the rankings if you look year to year over the last several years I mean the rankings and the teams that are in the top 15 or what ever you know it's it's The Usual Suspects but if you look at where the uh at the at the higher end scores on each team and where they're capped there's where the change is and so the fans don't get to see their home run they see them and they clear the fence we just don't call them home runs anymore I said that on the air um but it's that was kind of what I meant anyway...” - Jay Clark

When chosen strategically, technology becomes a key partner in building strong client relationships and delivering meaningful financial planning. In this episode of The Connected Advisor, Kyle talks with Jason Barber, CEO and Co-Founder of Uptick Partners. Jason helps advisors and investors achieve independence. He is also the CEO and Co-Founder of Holistic Planning, where he delivers high-quality, comprehensive, and unbiased financial advice to individuals and families. In this episode of Fintech Impact, Jason invites Manish Khatta, CEO of Potomac Fund Management, for an in-depth conversation. Unlike the usual Fintech discussions, this episode sheds light on the unique experience of solving technology challenges from within. Manish shares his journey of developing custom tech solutions, navigating partnerships, and the trade-offs inherent in taking control of one's technological landscape. Episode Highlights:00:10: Jason Pereira introduces the show and guest Manish Khatta, CEO of Potomac Fund Management, setting the stage for a discussion about the uncommon path of solving one's own technology challenges in the asset management space. Manish's role at Potomac as a catalyst for technological innovation will be explored, highlighting how it diverges from the standard FinTech discourse.01:39: The conversation pivots to Potomac's multi-faceted business model, exploring its structure as a third-party money manager, an in-house TAMP offering, and a provider of mutual funds. This part illuminates the complexities and challenges inherent in operating across different distribution channels and the strategic nuances of each.05:23: A candid discussion on the lessons learned from initially mistaking development direction and talent. Manish shares the pitfalls of early software development strategies, emphasizing the financial and operational glass ceilings encountered when outsourcing to ostensibly cost-effective development teams overseas. 08:06: The conversation then moves to Guardrails, Potomac's initial venture into custom software development. This part is particularly noteworthy as it sheds light on the iterative approach to technology development, emphasizing the role of feedback and adaptations in refining a tool tailored for financial advisors. 15:11: The conversation circles back to the pragmatic aspects of deploying new tech, focusing on the necessity of a minimal viable product (MVP) strategy. This pragmatic approach to software deployment highlights the business acumen required to balance ambition with executable, incrementally valuable deliverables. 24:06: The dialogue concludes with Manish expressing hope for greater unity and less divisiveness within the industry. His wish for a more collaborative environment and respect for diverse business models and practices speaks to broader themes of professional respect and sectoral progress. Key Takeaways:Innovation within financial technology can come from necessity and internal challenges rather than external solutions.Building on existing platforms via APIs can serve as a powerful strategy for businesses seeking customized tools without starting from zero. Offering proprietary technology as an added value to existing services can strengthen business relationships and foster more engaging user experiences.Tweetable Quotes:"Transforming tech challenges into in-house solutions has set us on a unique path of innovation." - Manish"Learning from the limitations of outsourced solutions propelled us towards taking control of our tech destiny." - ManishResources Mentioned:Facebook – Jason Pereira's FacebookLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInWoodgate.com – SponsorPodcast Editinghttps://potomacfund.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/manish-khatta/ Hosted on Acast. It's been almost three years since Cathy last joined me on Episode 313, (linked below) where she delved into her passion for running a solo practice tailored primarily to women who are single, heads of household, and breadwinners. We dive into the technological enhancements Cathy has implemented since her last visit, from embracing Holistiplan to integrating Kwanti into her tech arsenal and other software tools that she uses daily. We touch on the importance of using a TAMP for those entering the industry and how many tools are now available to advisors considering opening their own firm.  One of the most compelling parts of our conversation centers around Cathy's AUM fee model where she describes how simplifying your fee structure is key over the long term. She eloquently discusses setting time boundaries with clients, which both assist your service model and build relationships that can last a lifetime. Part of what he had to say at MATS caught the ear of more than one Overdrive reader, too, with potential problems for sole-proprietor owner-operators. To wit, as Alex Lockie's report on the session summed up what Riddle had to say: "FMCSA plans, in short order, to implement identification and business verification tools into the registration system, not allowing registrants to proceed until they've proven their identity and that their business exists and is registered with the IRS or the state." It's not 100% the case that every state requires sole proprietors in self-employed situations (such as many owners) to formally register, as noted W. Joel Baker, longtime owner-operator and insurance agent and a regular contributor to our Overdrive Extra series. As sole proprietors, formal registrations outside the payment of self-employment taxes and/or other business taxes, whether with the state or IRS, aren't always in play, Baker pointed. “We 'sole proprietors,'" he said, often “do not have, nor are we required to have, a business that is 'registered' with the IRS" for an EIN or with the state in some cases. If business verification procedures within FMCSA's registrations aren't implemented with a consideration made for such businesses, Baker added, “it will have a massive negative impact on the industry,” not to mention for any individual owner “cleaned up” through the process with authority revocation or other outcome. Riddle had more to add about business verification, too, though, noting that the agency is looking for a third-party contractor to help with the verifications and that it's fairly early days for the process. Overdrive also queried FMCSA directly about the situation Baker brought up. A rep there stressed the agency is still researching what data is available to validate businesses against, and hopes "all business scenarios can be accommodated. ... We believe the data is available, but we are still gathering details.” Keep tuned on that front. And mark your calendars for May 29 for the agency's next public engagement session, too, where you can bring your own ideas for ways to root out double brokers and other fraudsters who've been taking advantage of gaps in the system for many years now. Find information about the session via this link: https://www.overdriveonline.com/regulations/article/15667504/fmcsa-planning-stakeholder-day-on-registration-changes Also mentioned in the podcast, Lockie's report from attorney Hank Seaton and Dale Prax's presentation centered around registered-entity fraud: https://www.overdriveonline.com/regulations/article/15667297/fighting-the-trucking-fraud-networks-in-fmcsas-registration-system

Hi Bakers, This is one of the most decadent desserts to eat. A classic Chocolate Mousse is rich and satisfying but also light and airy. It's more elegant than a pudding but not much harder to make. I cooked the egg yolks and whites in this version to avoid eating raw eggs and that takes a bit longer to prepare with a few more steps. The heated egg whites look funky, like a curdled mess that smell scrambled…but they beat into lovely whites that don't taste like scrambled eggs at all. If you are not worried about uncooked eggs, you can whip the whites raw instead.  This recipe can be made as a mousse pie or as mousse with no crust. Both ways to eat it are fabulous and no one will miss the crust if you decide to skip it. Enjoy this special treat ~Carolyn Chocolate Mousse Pie/Chocolate Mousse Makes one 9” pie or 5” ramekins Crust one 12 ounce package of gluten-free Oreos 1/4 cup melted butter Filling 1 1/2 cups semisweet or dark chocolate chips 1 large egg 2 large egg yolks 1 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 egg whites 3 tablespoons granulated sugar Crust Remove the center of the Oreos and break apart into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until cookies are broken into small crumbs. Add the melted butter and mix until combined. This should resemble damp sand and stick together slightly. If you need to add another teaspoon of butter achieve this consistency. Press the crumbs lightly into place into the bottom of a pie pan using plastic wrap over your fingertips. Tamp down harder with a spoon or small measuring cup. Chill in the freezer until ready to use. Mousse Measure the chocolate into a large bowl. Set aside. Separate the egg whites and yolks using metal or ceramic bowls. In a medium-sized saucepan, whisk together the egg, yolks, 1/2 cup cream, sugar, espresso and vanilla. Heat while stirring continuously until the liquid becomes thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from the heat and pour over the chocolate. Cover and let sit for a few minutes until the chocolate is melted.  Whisk until smooth. Set aside and cool to ~113F. Combine the egg whites* and sugar over a double boiler or a small metal pan set atop a pan partially filled with boiling water. Whisk and heat until the temperature reaches 170F. Remove from the heat and beat until stiff but not dry peaks form. Set the bowl aside. Whip the remaining 1/2 cup whipped cream. Gently stir in a 1/4 of beaten egg whites into the chocolate mixture to lighten it. Fold in the remaining whites. Next, fold in the whipped cream. Portion into a pie pan or ramekins. Chill for at least 6 hours or overnight. Garnish with whipped cream and fresh fruit or chocolate shavings. A sprig of mint is also a pretty addition. *Uncooked eggs can be a health hazard. If you decide not to cook the egg whites(which is how many traditional recipes are written for chocolate mousse), whip them with sugar and vanilla in a metal or glass n a bowl without heating them. Add to the mousse then you achieve stiff but not dry peaks. Follow the instructions and add to the chocolate as directed. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolyn-hillyer/message

Look out for their off-the-wall and fun idea for getting the bar pressure spot on!   KEY TAKEAWAYS Espresso is not easy to make in a café. In a home setting, it can be even harder.  The correct grind size and uniformity are vital. How to get it right is explained. Not all home machines can generate the 9 bars it takes to make good espresso. A lot of your lower-end grinders have retention and static issues. How long it takes you to brew the espresso matters, 30 seconds is what you are aiming for. Spring-loaded tampers can be a great way to enable you to set the actual pressure of your tamp at home without spending too much money. Crema is trapped CO2.   BEST MOMENTS ‘It may not actually get the grounds fine enough for a real shot of espresso. ´ ‘I like a two-to-one ratio of water to coffee.' ‘Sometimes you are getting that better shot at home because you're paying attention to all this kind of stuff.'   GUEST RESOURCES   A previous episode with Stefan Tribble / https://www.ivoox.com/why-is-the-right-kettle-so-important-audios-mp3_rf_107015997_1.html Gaggia Classic / https://www.gaggia.com/manual-machines/new-classic/ WDT tool - https://coffeechronicler.com/wdt-tools-technique/ Portafilter - https://www.kitchenaid.ie/blog/portafilters-guide-for-espresso-fans   VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee: https://umblecoffee.com/ At Umble Coffee, we only roast specialty-grade arabica coffee from around the world with cupping scores 84 and above.
