Jeff and I go way back. We were in our 20's when we started hanging out, guiding, and outfitting big game hunts. Today, Jeff owns Primitive Outfitters and we are both considered "old-timers" in traditional bowhunting. It was great to visit with Jeff, to reminisce about some of the good old days of our lives, to tell a few stories, and to discuss some things we'd have done differently when it comes to shooting tradbows in our youth. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation between two old friends talking about traditional bowhunting and past hunts. Cheers!Mentioned in this episode:Traditional Bowhunter MagazineHeritage. Lifestyle. Decrease number and length of cine acquisitions and fluoroscopy timeDecrease the frame rate - halving the frame rate reduces radiation dose by 50%Decrease the distance between the image intensifier and the patientLimit steep LAO angulationsApply collimation as much as possible which reduces overall patient dose and scatter radiationLimit digital magnification which can increase skin dose exposure by 50% What are the important dose limits to consider for a pregnant female and her fetus in the cath lab? The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory equivalent dose limit is 5mSv during the entire pregnancy of the declared pregnant woman. The annual natural background radiation dose in the US is 3mSv.The average under-lead dose to a working pregnant interventionalist over the entire gestation is ~0.3mSv.The fetus of a working pregnant interventionalist is estimated to receive ~0.09mSv over an entire gestation. This week we catch up with Jeff Lander of Primitive Outfitting in British Columbia. We talk about a little bit of everything this week from bowhunting pioneers, role models, younger bowhunters coming to the traditional ranks, mule deer, grizzly and black bears. But mostly we talk about chasing big black bears in the spring with a stickbow. Jeff has been a long time supporter of the PBS and has a wealth of experience and some great stories, and is really down to earth, just our kind of guy!!
Jeff is one of my best friends and likely the most impactful mentor I have had during my hunting journey. It all started with my first archery hunt for black bear up at his camp. So, I could not think of a better topic to invite Jeff on to talk about than how to kill big, mature boars. He certainly did not disappoint.
