Alex Nadeau and I are in the tent alongside a creek in the Yukon high country. We tell the amazing story of our first-night connection with a huge bull Moose and then we get into a discussion on staying positive while in the field on long hunts. You can watch videos from this trip on our new YouTube channel, John Schneider's Wild Life. Alex and I share some of the tips and tricks we've learned about staying comfortable while glassing and performing other sedentary activities when we're hunting. Cold and discomfort can affect your success in a huge way. More time spent on the mountainside glassing means more likelihood that you will spot the animal that you are after. There is a definite skill involved with staying in a positive mindset in the wild. Loneliness, stiffness, and other discomforts will all present themselves as obstacles to success we're hunting...at some point along the way. Here are some ideas to help you spend more time in the field. Enjoying the adventure. Something new! We've launched a YouTube channel... "John Schneider's Wild Life". Maybe you will never get a chance to hunt thinhorn sheep in your life, but it is pretty cool to hear the story from someone who does just that on a regular basis. The Yukon is a special place. Also in this episode is an update from me on the show rebrand and where we are headed on our journey of wild food exploration. This is a good episode! I recently had the chance to chat with Pope & Young Club's past President, Jim Willems. Jim is an outstanding traditional bowhunter whose passion for bowhunting takes him far and wide. He's taken numerous world-class animals with his recurve and speaks eloquently about taking back the word "trophy hunter". That discussion alone, and hearing his take on hunting big bucks and bulls, is enough to make this episode great, but then we get to talking about ways that folks can access hunting opportunities around them. It is one thing to pick up a new bow and get geared up and proficient with arrow accuracy, and then it's a whole other thing to actually get out hunting. Hopefully, this episode helps you with that. Welcome to the Traditional Bowhunter's Journey...brought to you in cooperation with the Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. This episode is also brought to you by the fine folks over at Novem Archery. First off, May, Kevin, and I are at a favourite stream for a few days of fly fishing and wild food fun. The weather has been tumultuous, and the stream is running wildly and is the colour of skim chocolate milk! The fishing is challenging and even getting up and down the mountain river to the next hole is not without its hardships. The raging currents have changed the riverbed. The water is high on the banks, leaving sheer drop-offs along our path. It is a fun trip!Fly fishing in tough conditions requires adaptive fishing strategies and perseverance. We talk about some of those strategies and get into a few fish. Enough for a wonderful fish-fry breakfast and some smoked Rocky Mountain Whitefish.  May is with us for the first leg of this fishing trip and caught a little bit of the fly fishing bug. A few days after we were home, I got a call from her that she wanted some assistance in choosing her first gear. So, we headed to Reid's Fly Shop, and the owner, Reid Otto helped her select a beautiful combo that she'll be able to pass down to next generations of fishers. Enjoy!Something new! Clay Newcomb was super helpful to me when I wanted to publish a story in Bear Hunter Magazine about my big bear in '21.  At the time, he was the owner of the magazine and I didn't know it then, but he was mostly complete with his discussions with Steve Rinella and the Meat Eater company. It wouldn't be long after that that the magazine was sold, and he became a full-time content creator for Meat Eater and the Bear Grease Podcast Clay took some time out of his day to join us on the Traditional Bowhunter's Journey podcast. I wasn't certain which series this interview belonged to. I know Clay from his youtube videos where he close-hunted black bears with his traditional archery gear. We did chat a bit about bows, but mainly I was interested in his take on hunting tools and the philosophy that we share when it comes to deciding on which equipment to take with us in the field.I do hope you enjoy hearing some of the behind-the-scenes stories from Clay Newcomb on the path he took and how he became a part of the Meat Eater crew. Something new! Here is a delightful episode from a day spent fishing in the East Kootenays of British Columbia with Paige Johnstone and Lisa Tink. This starts as a lovely day on a small stream. It was so nice to be back in BC and spend time with friends. I had planned this episode immediately after I met Paige last summer while fishing with Curtis Hall. The little stream we fished is in Paige's backyard. She grew up here, long before she became a fly fisher. Paige has been fishing for three years now. Her attraction to fly fishing though goes back to when she was a young girl fishing with her father and watching folks fly casting elsewhere. Then she met Curtis, a professional fly fishing guide, and the rest is history. She is now very accomplished for someone relatively new to the sport. She talks like a guide and acts like one too. I'm not surprised though. Paige reminds me of me...she wants to figure something out and then does it. Unlike me, however, she does things very well indeed! As we fished up and down the shady little stream, she offered advice to Lisa and showed off a few of her special fishing spots. It was simply wonderful. Then the conversation turned towards some issues that she's faced in her fly fishing journey. As a teacher, she is good at verbalizing her thoughts, and it was really interesting to listen to her and Lisa chat about issues that newcomers to the lifestyle might face. I love this episode, and I hope you will too!Something new! We've launched a YouTube channel... "John Schneider's Wild Life". It was supposed to be a discussion on his spring hunting success, but happily turned into something equally interesting and perhaps more insightful. Of course, whenever Shawn is on the show I have to be a fanboy and ask for some details of what is happening behind the scenes with his YouTube channel. With the river's water levels just right, Alex, armed with his experience as a wildlife biologist, anticipated that the Grayling would be there. And indeed, they were—in great numbers. A small bridge spanned the tiny river and once we were above the water, we could see the Grayling, by the dozens, maneuvering in the currents. After several days of immersing ourselves in the grand northern landscape, the absence of fish tested our patience. But, our perseverance was about to be rewarded. Here is a raunchy, raw, and colourful conversation with James. Just two guys, full of crap, having fun chatting about wild food and outdoor wild food endeavours. This episode has some language, so not one for the car with the kids. James and I chat about his youtube channel, the cabin he is building along with his random Chinese life, and being the host for the Backstreet Boys Reunion live stream that had tens of millions of viewers! Check out the Food Afield Podcast on Instagram! Follow along for all of our wild food adventures.Beka Garris is a busy person. Her two young children, outdoor activities, and writing career mean her time is precious. I was grateful then that she set aside a little of her time to chat with us about her tradbow journey here on the podcast. Beka faces a lot of barriers when it comes to being out in the woods with her bow. However, she was determined to keep that part of her life intact and to share it with her kids. Relocating the family, not having access to private land, and naysayers trying to knock her down, it didn't matter to Beka. She is just out doing her thing with a traditional bow in one hand and her daughters in the other. The entire focus of traditional bowhunting for Beka is food, but perhaps even more important, at least right now, is showing her two daughters this sustainable lifestyle. Having young children is not forever, one day she will have all of the time in the world to be out hunting on her own. Right now, that is not the case. The decision is simple, take the kids hunting, or don't go hunting. I admire her focus and determination in this regard. Most of us don't have these limitations. As she says, "If I can do this, so can anyone." Welcome to this traditional bowhunter's journey. Here is the first part of our trip, an introduction to the Yukon and some of the beautiful scenes that we experienced on our journey. We started off in great anticipation of big Grayling jumping from crystal clear waters. Those visions were quickly dashed as our boat confronted a mass of ice, still frozen across the lake. Intrepidly, we carried on. We fished hard. His inexhaustible ability to tell fascinating hunting stories is just plain fun. This conversation could've gone on for hours. If you're lucky enough to have met Monty in person, you know exactly what I'm talking about here. Monty's longevity in bowhunting is a definite theme in his life. At 73 years old, he is still climbing one hundred-foot trees with a chainsaw for his arborist business. He is also still chasing big game with his recurve bow in faraway places, something that he has done almost his entire life. Around the 14-minute mark of this recording, an exciting moment occurred. Initially, this was just a segment from one of the turkey hunting episodes, recorded during an evening with Mark Hall in the wall tent. If you're ever unsure how to explain your passion for hunting to those who don't understand it, this could be the ideal resource for you. This was the second night of my recent turkey hunt, and the conversation that took place was too special to be overlooked. We continued a discussion from earlier that day, and it quickly became apparent that this conversation deserved to be its own episode.Catching the perfect moment on tape is always thrilling, and in this case, we were able to capture it with an H4N Pro recorder and some stereo microphones. The darkness outside was filled with the calls of geese and loons from the nearby lake, and the wood stove crackled in the background as we sipped whiskey. Whenever I find myself in these types of situations, it always leads to engaging conversations. As we release this regular episode on Wednesday, John and Erin are busy packing their bags for their upcoming trip to the Yukon. They'll be fly fishing for huge Arctic Grayling above the 60th parallel, and we can't wait to share their experience with you. How To Be A Better BowhunterEthan Rodrigue is part of the Stickboys Podcast crew and was kind enough to join us on the latest episode of the Traditional Bowhunter's Journey, brought to you by the Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. Ethan is all about the trad bow and bowhunting. He is extremely knowledgeable about the issues surrounding the current state of hunting and the "industry". He is also very much involved in the PBS and we chatted about that great organization and how they are helping folks get involved in the traditional bowhunting lifestyle. The Traditional Bowhunting LifestyleIn this episode, Ethan made several points that surprised me with their clarity. His insights made me rethink my approach to hunting and have definitely inspired me to try to become a "better bowhunter".What I appreciated most about Ethan's message was his focus on the basics. In today's age of social media and instant gratification, it's easy to get lost in the noise and forget the fundamentals. But as Ethan pointed out, the pioneers of traditional bowhunting did important work in the 40s, 50s, and 60s to make this sport what it is today. We owe it to them to keep their woodsmanship, devotion, and ethics alive in order to honor their legacy. So what does it mean to be a better bowhunter? According to Ethan, it's about having respect for the animal and the laws, being observant, and being willing to spend a lifetime of learning from the natural world around you. It's about taking responsibility for your actions and understanding that hunting is not just about the kill, but about the experience as a whole.I found Ethan's message to be a refreshing change from the sensationalism and bravado that sometimes dominates hunting culture. He reminded me that at its core, hunting is a pursuit that requires discipline, humility, and a deep connection to nature. I hope that more hunters will embrace this approach and carry on the traditions of our forefathers.Mentioned in this episode:Traditional Bowhunter MagazineHeritage. Lifestyle. Community. I have next to no idea what calls I need or how to use them, and that's just the bare minimum of what I need to know. It's about time I had Mark Hall on my show, and the timing is perfect as I begin to get ready for April 15, the opening day of the Merriam's Turkey season in BC. Mark is the host of the Hunter Conservationist Podcast and has been pursuing these birds in the hills around his home for more than two decades. He also offers a masterclass on hunting turkeys in the ponderosa pine ridges of southern BC. That course is available here. Mark's knowledge of turkey biology and behaviour, and how to put them on his table, is matched only by his enthusiasm. The two of us will be hiking a pre-dawn rocky mountain ridge on opening day, shock-calling for roosted turkeys, and I simply cannot wait. Stories of good dogs and near-miss hunting accidents. From the grouse brush, we head down into the grasslands of the Canadian prairies. We're still focused on birds, but this time you get to listen in as Kevin successfully stalks a flock of Sandhill Cranes in a field! Spot and stalk crane on the menu as a unique wild food ingredient! After the bird hunting is over, Kevin and I find ourselves back in the wolf-willows and scrub brush of that same prairie landscape. This previous week I had ambitions to get out and do some hare hunting. But life got in the way and firewood collection became the priority. In the interest of keeping my word on the publication of weekly podcast episodes, I came up with the idea of putting together some highlights of episodes from season four. I am always surprised, looking at the podcast stats, that so few people go back and listen to the old episodes when they first find the show. This year, a little confused about the need versus the want to bowhunt, John's season gets a very late start. This was partly by design though. It was fun to have a week of bowhunting to look forward to, and I suspect that it will be replicated in future seasons. This concentrated effort was slightly thwarted by some extreme weather that blew in for the last 4 days. This episode is also a bit of a breakthrough with recording in the field during a hunt. This is the first time I've recorded content while in the treestand or ground blind. The wind wreaked some havoc on the audio quality from time to time, but some new kit has been ordered from Germany that should take care of that issue moving forward. Mule Deer Euro Mount Episode 54

A simple little episode that I recorded while preparing my mule deer buck for a so-called "euro mount". This is the second time I've performed this home taxidermy procedure. The first time was under the excellent tutelage of Kevin Kossowan while cleaning my big whitetail buck last year. That skull turned out amazing. Since recording this episode of the Food Afield Podcast, I've come across many knowledgeable folks who have different ways of cleaning the skulls, which I think is wonderful! I hope I never grow tired of learning new skills and different ways of accomplishing tasks. This episode should not be considered a how-to, but perhaps more of a "how-I". This week I will post some photos on the member's feed article so you can have a better idea of what I am trying to explain in the audio. At any rate, I hope you enjoy the show! Part two of the Mule Deer expedition continues in this episode of the Food Afield Podcast. Kevin and John are in the grasslands and the blizzard hits hard! The temperatures plummet to minus 18 degrees Celsius, but that doesn't matter too much. There are two deer, including John's big buck, skinned and hanging in the shack, and the woodstove is working hard. This episode continues John's story on the first morning and picks up as the doe and the big buck are headed straight towards him. Kevin and John re-tell the story that evening while the blizzard howls and cocktails are poured. They also tell about Kevin's whitetail gift as they were loading up John's buck! This episode of the Food Afield Podcast finds John and Kevin in the newly established Grasslands Shack where they are looking for both antlered and antlerless mule deer.Kevin has spent a good deal of time and energy getting the shack set up on some property in the grasslands where his family has hunted since he was young. This was our second visit to the shack and we installed the chimney for the woodstove, just ahead of an incoming blizzard. This episode begins inside the shack, a wood fire crackling in the background, with the guys chatting about wild food and Folding Mountain Brewery beer. The conversation turns to mule deer hunting before too long though and suddenly we are in the field with John as he first encounters the big mule deer buck! This hunt will continue over a few episodes. It was a great trip and we are so glad to share it with you! This episode is sponsored by Folding Mountain Brewery. The award-winning beer they produce is served around Alberta. The taproom and kitchen are located at the gates of Jasper National Park. 50 A Day in the Boreal

The 50th episode of the Food Afield Podcast. Happy Halloween! This episode finds Kevin Kossowan and me in the familiar surroundings of the northern boreal forest. We've decided to multi-task with some wild food ingredient procurement this day. It is a long day, many hours, and many kilometers of hiking, but we accomplish a few things. The first task is for Kevin to set up his three trail cameras. This has become a fun pastime for us in recent years. We get to see some pictures of game that we wouldn't get the chance to do otherwise. Sometimes, there are some pretty interesting photos that come from these cameras. These photos, and the times that they are taken also help us to make some decisions once hunting season comes around. Should an area be hunted in the morning vs afternoon for instance? Mostly though, it is just for fun. The other reason for being in the boreal at this time of year is for the Ruffed Grouse hunting. Last year, the populations of grouse were through the roof! You get to hear us finally achieve some success on these birds. They are right up there for me as far as the quality of meat is concerned. Lastly, I fill up the bed of the pickup with dry tamarack firewood for the house. While I'm cutting wood, you can hear Kevin sighting in his antique 303 in the background. With this firewood, the strawbale house stays warm and comfortable all winter, and we get to cook with it also. This was a quality day spent in the woods. I invite you to come join us in the woods here on the Food Afield Podcast! Visit the Food Afield Podcast website for great articles, recipes, and much more.
