Kevin and Chris Denham sat down and spoke with Kenton Clairmont, one of the founders of the event, about its return and the principles behind it.Kenton lives out in the wild, so you may hear some of the ambiance of that lifestyle in the background, but you're probably used to it. Does it get any better than putting wild game on the table? Guest Sara Gamache knows exactly what that’s all about, and has been putting food on the table since she was a youngster.   In today’s episode I catch up with Sara and chat about her hunts last Fall, a bit about growing up in a hunting family, and passing along the tradition of the hunt to her own kids.   As a business owner, mom, and military wife Sara has learned how to make the shuffle of life and hunting work together. In fact, Sara was so driven to fill her Washington Elk tag while her husband was deployed overseas that she hired a nanny so that she could hunt hard with a multi season tag to notch.   It was fun to catch up with her, especially when it came to reliving the hunt, as her passion and desire to hunt is evident and inspiring. Sara, talks about getting into archery, and her determination to continually seek out new adventure.   I couldn’t help but bring up the elephant in the room, especially considering her IG handle, @pnw_huntress , but I wanted to dive into the hot topic of “huntress” and the common attack it brings.   Follow Sara's adventures or connect with her on Facebook, Sara Gamache or on Instagram @pnw_huntress   You can also find more information on the Train To Hunt competition here.    This is a cool conversation with a true go getter -- tune in, and enjoy.   For more Episodes or to connect, find the Her Inspired Journey here.

Dave Beronio is a man of many talents. He’s driven, compassionate, mischievous, and on top of it all, he’s absolutely hilarious! Today Steven talks with Dave about everything from, his pro Ski racing, being a dad, to his run for Train To Hunt gold and being an integral part of “Outback Outdoors” So sit back and relax, and see why we love Dave so much and tend to hang on his every word! He was born and raised in Lake Tahoe, Nevada along the rugged snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada's. The mountains provided opportunities for excellent hunting, fishing and ski racing, which as a kid, were skills passed on by generations of avid competitors. Growing up an athlete, Dave traveled the Alpine ski racing circuit as an Elite level skier, competing all over North America and around the world. He used this talent and secured a scholarship to attend and compete for the University of Nevada Reno while working on his Business Degree. However, hunting remained his true passion. Life in the Sierras provided an environment that would allow his outdoor appetite to grow. He is an avid bow hunter, fly fisherman, bird hunter, and all around sportsman. Dave has a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the wildlife that call it home. He founded the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation, and is an active member of the Operation Game Thief Citizens board. He spends countless hours volunteering and working with biologists and Wildlife organizations that specialize in big game research and habitat restoration projects. Dave is married to his beautiful wife Denise, and is the proud father to daughter, Hunter and his son, Gatlin. Dave is a firm believer in hard work, dedication and proving his worth above and beyond what is expected. He also believes strongly in loyalty, commitment, and representing himself in a positive way and showing his Faith in God. Dave feels it is important to give back more than he takes, and he teaches his kids the importance of the outdoors and how it provides the food to fill your soul. "It's all part of the adventure!" Now following his passion for Bow Hunting, Dave is also a host for the TV Show, "Outback Outdoors". He is one member of a team of hardcore bow hunters that capture hunts for their television show. If you live in the area and you’re new to archery or just want to learn how to work on your own bow or build your own arrows, checkout Phil’s classes--they’re great. On today’s podcast, Phil and I discuss hunting mistakes--primarily, mistakes made in the final moments of a shot opportunity. Cody Eardley wrote a great article in the January 2018, Bugle Magazine (put out by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation--which you should become a member of if you aren’t already) and the article is titled, Situation Ethics. The article is a good one and it got Phil and I talking about ethics, shot selection and closing the deal in the final moments of a hunt. I enjoy talking to Phil because I always learn. Phil is an extremely talented hunter and archer. He’s a Train To Hunt champion. And he’s owner and mastermind of the Alpha Bowhunting Challenge. And as discussed on an earlier podcast, Phil wrote a mini book titled, “Targeting Buck Fever.” Train to Hunt and The Alpha Bowhunting Challenge are competitive events designed to help hunters hone the ability to make good decisions and good shots at the proverbial “moment of truth” while under extreme pressure. So join Phil and I for a frank and open discussion on mistakes we’ve made, things we’ve learned and our Situation Ethics. Big thanks to Cody Eardley and Bugle Magazine for providing relevant, educative, thought provoking articles like the one we discuss today.

Today on Gritty, my guest is my good friend Phil Mendoza and our topic is Targeting Buck Fever. Phil is a stud. Period. Not just because he’s an incredible hunter, archer, Train To Hunt champion, owner of Alpha Bowhunting and the Alpha Bowhunting Challenge and not because he’s the owner of the biggest archery shop in Denver; although that resume pretty sick. No, Phil is a stud because of his character. “The best index to a person's character is how he treats people who can't do him any good, and how he treats people who can't fight back.” ― Abigail Van Buren And that quote about sums up Phil and why I like him so much. He’s been a guest on the podcast before. Early on, when I started the Gritty Bowmen podcast, Phil and Aron Snyder went on an Epic Big Horn Sheep hunt and Aron tells the story on GB EPISODE 24 and 30. More recently, Phil was a guest on episode 255 where he and our friends from Fit 4 The Hunt talked about Physical Conditioning and The Mental Game--those have been popular episodes and if you’ve never listened them, I recommend you check them out. Phil wrote a booklet, not too long ago, that he titles Targeting Buck Fever. Every hunter, every archer has struggled at one time or another with Buck Fever. The urban dictionary defines buck fever as, “nervousness felt by novice hunters when they first sight game.” Which is absolute rubbish because buck fever can affect both new and experienced hunters. When the stakes are high, when you’re on that once-in-a-lifetime hunt, when it’s the last hour of the last day, when the buck of your dreams presents a last second shot, buck fever can wreck you. So how do you rise to occasion, hold your mud, and crush that shot? Well, that’s the discussion that Phil and I have on today’s podcast. It’s good stuff. Take a listen and if you like what you hear, do me a favor and link up with Phil on his Alpha Bowhunting Instagram and Youtube Channels and checkout his book on Amazon. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with friend Scott Carr at Brent Hahn's home in Salem Oregon at after Joel Turner’s Iron Mind Hunting shooting clinic. I first met Scott at the Train To Hunt event in Enumclaw Washington. My first impression of Scott, watching him shoot and run the Train To Hunt course, is that he’s an animal--a fierce competitor who gives everything he’s got. The man has heart, determination, and an iron will. Scott didn’t used to be the fit guy he is today. In fact, before Train To Hunt, Scott was your typical 9 to 5, overweight, company man. But Scott made decision to change all that. And this weekend he took 3rd-place in the 2016 Train To Hunt Nationals Event, Master’s Division. There are a lot of things that impress me about Scott Carr--but one thing that stands out to me is how he makes a decision to get better and then finds a way to do it.  On this podcast, Scott tells his inspiring story. We get a peak into his mind and we learn a little about how he thinks and what drives him. Scott is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met who also wants to crush you in a competition. I think that’s one of the reasons I like him so much. He’s a competitor, and fierce one. Meet Scott Carr. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I get to hang out with my friend, Ryan Lampers; although I call him Donnie Vincent Lampers. Ryan has a very Donnie Vincent-esque look that makes me think of films like Rivers Divide and Tera Nova--and when I look at Ryan, I find myself reciting Donnie lines in my head like, “Sometimes hunts go quick. Sometimes they take years. But one thing’s for sure, there’s always a story… and one that’s usually worth telling.” Or this line, “Don’t confuse me with being anything else other than proud. Proud to be a hunter. It’s time we stop apologizing for how we get our protein. This is who we are.” But Ryan is not Donnie. Although I would argue that he gives Donnie a run for his money in the cool hair department. Ryan is Ryan. A tough dude who consistently kills old and mature big game animals on public land on over-the-counter hunts, year after year. And his success rate doesn’t surprise me after watching him compete at my first Train To Hunt course in Enumclaw Washington earlier this year. Ryan can shoot--most importantly, he can shoot under extreme pressure. I watched him do this at two Train To Hunt events. And I tried mightily to throw him off his game--heckling and taunting him. Sticking a camera in his face and threatening to show the world his failures. All in good fun, of course. I was impressed. And not only can he shoot, he can grind physically; winning a podium spot at three separate Train To Hunt Challenge Events. And he’s a cool dad to boot.   On this podcast we talk about what it takes to be a good hunter. I ask Ryan how he succeeds on public land, OTC hunts on big, big-animals every year. It’s good stuff. I really like Ryan Lampers. You will too.  Featured on this podcast:  https://www.instagram.com/sthealthyhunter/ www.stealthyhunter.com https://www.facebook.com/ryan.lampers Hillary Lampers https://www.instagram.com/dochillary/ https://www.facebook.com/drhillarynd

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen with visit with my friends Kenton Clairemont and Jesse Wise. Kenton is the founder and owner of Train To Hunt. Working out and Hunting are the two things that Kenton has always loved to do. He was a four sport athlete in high school, a state champ in wrestling and a collegiate baseball player.   After a year in the minor leagues he returned  to school for his Masters degree in Sports Psychology.  After graduation he began his career as a personal trainer, and it was his love for hunting, the outdoors, and helping people that inspired him to start Train To Hunt.  He is an avid bowhunter, and fitness coach. Jesse Wise is the Train to Hunt Director in my home state, Oregon. Jesse and I met at the ATA show and since then we’ve hit the weights together in my ghetto basement home gym. Jesse has started a brand called Unashamed Outdoors to share his christ-centered values and his love of the outdoors.  Kenton is the real deal when it comes to fitness. He’s a student of healthy living. His company, Train To Hunt, is inspiring hunters to get in shape for hunting and for life. The Train To Hunt community is pretty cool. Regardless of your fitness-level, I encourage you to check it out.
