Drew and Kevin Patterson from the Marin Irish Festival 2026 join Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell on Brew Ha Ha. Drew also came on Brew Ha Ha last year on April 24, 2025, to promote last year’s event.  This year the festival has grown to cover two days, Saturday and Sunday May 16 and 17. Herlinda remembers attending the first Marin Irish Festival last year. Kevin’s parents started the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in the ‘70s. They also produce the Dickens Christmas Faire at the Cow Palace in December. They have everything Irish; food and drink, music, sheep dogs and a sanctioned Irish dance competition, called a feis, pronounced “fesh.” Theirs is maybe the biggest feis on the west coast. They have some Guinness, Smithwick and Tullamore whiskey, There are two Irish pubs. One is called the Bearded Goose, and the other is called The Gander. They sell all the Irish brews they can bring in. Drew says live music is what makes an Irish pub live. You can actually bring your instruments and play along. ++++ Visit Russian River Brewing Co. in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. ++++ Lagoon Park Comes to Life Lagoon Park is in the Marin County fairgrounds. The park comes to life with 6 stages. There will be demonstrations of falconry. One falconer has worked with them for more than 30 years. They will actually fly the birds from the main stage. There is also a pen for a small flock of sheep, where they demonstrate how sheep dogs work with the sheep. The festival began when some friends of Kevin’s were organizing a feis, but they had nothing happening around it. They developed the festival around the feis. Smithwick’s is a red ale and they are proud that they have it on draft. The Guinness is also on draft. Every glass of Guinness takes a two-minute pour. Tickets are $30 which Herlinda says is reasonable enough to allow someone to also do some shopping. There is a selection of craft vendors, makers of candles, glass blowing, kilts and more. There is a traditional meat pie booth. Hop Monk puts a special menu together. They also have kebobs and Greek food. The Tully Pickleback is a shot of pickle juice with a shot of Tullamore Dew whiskey. Hair of the dog? Pre-emptive hair of the dog? For example, Hop Monk makes Irish tacos, with corned beef and cabbage on a tortilla.

At this point it seems the cult is ready to blame anyone for the death of their member even if it means manufacturing a reason. The heroes negotiate a solution to have her brought to Gander and turned over to the authorities. They make their way on this last leg of the trip and aside from regular road hazards and inclement weather, make it to Gander, finally. They let Elowyn go and she decides to head for the Temple of Paladine in Palanthas. The heroes meet up with Jamna and are all introduced to Seto. They decide to work together as they all are trying to discover more about the Cult and what they are planning with the stolen loot. The Cult's wagons are going to be headed East, and the heroes learn of Lord Winterholm starting a building campaign to rebuild the road from Winterholm to Gander. Construction is already underway and the heroes join up with the High Road Charter Company. They are ambushed on the way to Carnath House, the drop off point for tradesmen and supplies for the construction, and overcome the Bullywug's. Once at the roadhouse they realize some of the crates, specifically the cults’ loot crates are being stored in a secured area. The heroes deal with one furious cultist who calls out Gunner and as tensions are high, Bog Luck, the half-ogre who runs the construction effort, suggested Gunner retire to his room rather than have the cultists kill him. As Soto and Garrick discover a secret portal in the secure room, Bakali erupts from within. The heroes all come to help fight off the Bakali, but with the sounds of battle evident and the already high tension with the cultists, what will the heroes do? Send us a textThis episode wrecked me in the very best way.On September 11th, 2001, while most of the world was glued to their TVs watching unimaginable horror unfold, Diane Davis was teaching Grade 3 French immersion in Gander, Newfoundland, an airport town of about 10,000 people that would suddenly become home to nearly 7,000 stranded airline passengers. What happened next is the part of the 9/11 story you probably don't know.Diane walks me through those surreal days when 38 planes were diverted to Gander and an entire community quietly, efficiently, and compassionately mobilized. Teachers turned schools into shelters. Bus drivers walked off strike to shuttle passengers. Churches, camps, and tiny outport towns filled trucks with food, bedding, and toothbrushes. Bulletin boards replaced the internet. Tim Hortons boxes became filing systems. No one waited to be told what to do. People just did what they could.Diane's story became part of Come From Away, the Broadway musical inspired by Gander's response to 9/11. Yes, there is literally a character based on her. But what struck me most wasn't the red carpets or the Tony Awards. It was her belief that none of this was extraordinary. It was simply people showing up with whatever skills they had.We also talk about the other side of being a lifelong helper, learning how to receive. Diane shares candidly about her current cancer treatment, the discomfort of accepting support, and how community once again is carrying her through. This conversation is about kindness, grit, humility, and the quiet magic that happens when strangers choose to care for each other. You might cry. I definitely did. And you'll walk away remembering what humans are capable of when we're at our best. What's Inside:What really happened in Gander when thousands of planes were diverted on 9/11How ordinary people self-organized to care for thousands of strangersThe real-life story behind Come From AwayWhy learning to receive help can be just as powerful as giving itSo here's what I want you thinking about after this episode. What does being rich actually mean to you? Is it having more than enough for yourself or being so resourced that you can show up for others without hesitation? Diane's story is a masterclass in emotional wealth, generosity, and community. And look, that kind of life is built one choice at a time.I want to hear from you. Our understanding of the body's internal clocks is rapidly evolving, with new research shedding light on the powerful effects of circadian rhythms. From the way artificial light disrupts our sleep patterns to how animals' natural cycles offer valuable insights into human health, the science is undeniable. Dr. Philippa Gander, a leading expert in sleep and circadian rhythms and author of Life in Sync: The Science of Internal Clocks and How We're Disrupting Them explains how these disruptions impact not just humans but entire ecosystems, including marine life. Her groundbreaking work also reveals the profound effects of light pollution, offering fresh perspectives on how we can better align our lives with our biological clocks. In this conversation with Peter Bowes, Gander also highlights practical ways we can make adjustments to better sync our lives with nature's rhythms for improved health and well-being.Photo credit: Lucia Zanmonti-----This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. This week on Truth to Power, we are thrilled to share a community conversation with two brilliant artistic minds who were awarded the 2025 Spalding Prize for the Promotion of Peace and Justice in Literature on November 11th at the Brown Hotel's 16th Floor Gallery. This year's winners are Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the award-winning Broadway musical Come From Away. This remarkable, moving, and award-winning comedy is based on true events in the Newfoundland town Gander. Immediately after the 9/11 attacks on the United States, dozens of commercial aircraft with approximately 7,000 passengers aboard were ordered to land at Gander International Airport. The airport's impressive name belies the fact that Gander was and is a small town in Newfoundland; nonetheless, Gander residents scrambled to feed, shelter, and, most importantly, welcome thousands of passengers, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religious or sexual preference, or nationality. The compassion and kindness of the citizens of Gander and their generosity toward stranded passengers created enduring friendships and connections among people who were recently complete strangers. Come From Away highlights the many occasions for human compassion even in the midst of a global tragedy. After the play's immense success, Sankoff and Hein wrote the screenplay providing international access to the staged performance of Come From Away. Irene Sankoff is a Canadian Tony- and Olivier-nominated, Grammy-nominated writer for theatre, film, and television. A writer and actor, Sankoff has received a Meritorious Service Cross of Canada. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild, Writers Guild, and ASCAP. David Hein is an Olivier Award-winning, Tony- and Grammy-nominated writer. He and Irene Sankoff created My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding based on his mother's true story, earning Best Musical awards across America. The Spalding Prize is awarded by the Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing at Spalding University. Political karma sometimes requires a long wait, but it comes. In 2011, Republicans in the Legislature and Gov. Scott Walker enacted a law changing how to handle court challenges to gerrymandered maps. At the time, it made sense because the state Supreme Court was controlled by fellow conservatives and they were given power to appoint three-judge panels to hear the cases. On Tuesday, the state Supreme Court appointed three-judge panels to hear challenges to those gerrymandered maps — but, as you know, the court is now under progressive control. It took 14 years, but the GOP is learning that sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. This is the second part of this Encore Episode from 2021 featuring a conversation with Irene Sankoff & David Hein — the dynamic writing team and married couple that created the international smash hit musical Come From Away which recently topped American Theatre magazine's list of the most produced plays in America in 2025/26. On the previous episode Irene and David related how they got hooked on musicals, and how they went from their first show based on a true story — My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding — to deciding to create a musical based on the real life events that happened in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland in the days following 9/11. They also described what it was like to attend the 10th Anniversary of the events in Gander and then begin to transform the stories they heard there into a musical during an early workshop production at The Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan College. We also explored the classic Broadway shows that influenced and inspired the writing of their book, music, and lyrics for Come From Away. If you missed part one you may want to go back and catch up on that episode before you listen to this one. Today we look at the extensive development process that CFA went through on its journey to Broadway — including a workshop in Seattle, a series of productions at the La Jolla Playhouse, The Seattle Rep, Ford's Theater in DC. and the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, as well as a thrilling concert presentation in Gander where it all began.  Back in 2015, I served as the Executive Producer and Artistic Director of The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle and, as such, I had the great pleasure of co-producing that original Seattle workshop of Come From Away. This was the first time that the show's Tony award winning director Christopher Ashley and choreographer, Kelly Devine began to work on the show — and it was great fun to recall that exciting experience with Irene and David. Come From Away is the fifth musical to originate in Canada and eventually open on Broadway.  The first was 1974's Rockabye Hamlet with book, music and lyrics by Cliff Jones. This rock musical adaptation of Shakespeare was originally titled Kronborg 1582 and was well received, first as a radio series on the CBC, and then at the Charlottetown Theatre Festival and on tour in Canada, before being retitled and opening on Broadway with Gower Champion as the director. It became a legendary flop and closed after 7 performances. Next, in 1980 came the intimate and engaging Billy Bishop Goes To War written by John McLachlan Gray the show featured one actor to playing18 different roles to tell the story of real life Canadian fighter pilot Billy Bishop during the first World War. This show nearly doubled the run of Rockabye Hamlet closing after 12 performances. However, over the next ten years Billy Bishop Goes To War received scores of productions at theaters all across North America.  The Story Of My Life, with music and lyrics by Neil Bartram and book by Brian Hill, opened on Broadway in 2009. Unfortunately, it had an even shorter run than either of the previous two Canadian shows. However, one year earlier, a group of Canadian writers finally scored a significant hit with The Drowsy Chaperone – book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, and music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison. This delightful show opened on Broadway in 2008, received Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Original Score, and ran for 674 performances.   There have been a few other Canadian writers that found success on Broadway – Galt McDermott being the most famous of them – but that was with shows that originated in the US. On 11 September, 2001, a small Canadian town called Gander became a haven for thousands of airline passengers and crew stranded after the 9/11 terror attacks. The attacks on the World Trade Center had forced the closure of US airspace leaving many flights unable to land. Within hours, 38 planes with 7,000 passengers, had been diverted to Gander, effectively doubling the town's population. But what happened next showcased the extraordinary kindness and generosity of the Newfoundlanders. For five days, local residents provided beds, food, medicine and clothing for those stranded during the crisis, and didn't ask for a cent. They even put on music evenings, barbecues and canoe trips to keep their visitors entertained.Beverley Bass, one of the plane captains, tells Jane Wilkinson about Gander's extraordinary hospitality during one of the most traumatic events in modern history. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Interview with Keith Boyle, CEO of New Found Gold Corp. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/new-found-gold-tsxvnfg-a-model-for-responsible-mining-development-7373Recording date: 17th July 2025New Found Gold Corporation (TSXV:NFG) has released its first preliminary economic assessment for the Queensway Gold Project in Newfoundland, presenting an innovative three-phase development strategy designed to minimize capital requirements while maximizing investor returns. The approach marks a strategic shift toward early cash generation rather than traditional large-scale mine development. The company plans to produce 1.5 million ounces of gold over a 15-year mine life with all-in sustaining costs of $1,256 per ounce. CEO Keith Boyle emphasized the strategy's focus on internal rate of return over net present value, stating: "We sacrificed NPV for IRR. In phasing the approach, we really pushed out that big production number because the capital cost of the small starter is much more attractive to us and much better fit for our shareholders."Phase one involves constructing a 700 ton-per-day operation requiring $155 million in capital expenditure, utilizing a toll mill in Newfoundland for five years. This initial phase will produce 69,000 ounces annually, generating substantial margins of approximately $2,000 per ounce at current gold prices. The second phase scales up significantly with a 7,000 ton-per-day processing plant beginning construction in years three and four, commencing production in year five at 172,000 ounces annually. The project demonstrates exceptional economics, delivering $742 million net present value with 56% internal rate of return at $2,500 gold assumptions. At current spot prices around $3,300, the IRR exceeds 100%, showcasing the project's leverage to gold price movements.New Found Gold benefits from exceptional infrastructure proximity, located one hour from Gander, Newfoundland. The company expects rapid permitting based on government support targeting five mines by 2030, with recent examples showing 10.5-month approval timelines. Additional upside comes from active drill programs at Dropkick and other targets, plus underground development adding 230,000 ounces as a "sweetener" to the open pit operation.View New Found Gold's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/new-found-goldSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Interview with Keith Boyle, CEO of New Found GoldRecording date: 13th June, 2025New Found Gold Corporation has undergone significant leadership changes and adopted a development-focused approach under new management. The company appointed Keith Boyle as CEO in January 2025, following a complete board changeover in December 2024. Boyle brings four decades of mining experience and a track record of developing eight previous projects, describing his team as "mine builders."The company's flagship asset spans 110 kilometers in Newfoundland, containing 1.4 million ounces of indicated gold resources and 600,000 ounces of inferred resources. What sets this deposit apart is its exceptional grade distribution, with 75% of ounces concentrated in just 25% of the tonnage. This characteristic enables selective mining approaches that can prioritize high-grade material early in the mine life, supporting rapid cash flow generation.New Found Gold recently secured $63 million through a bought-deal financing led by major shareholder Eric Sprott, who maintained his 19% stake and committed an additional $20 million. This financial backing provides adequate capital to advance through development studies and supports the company's 80/20 capital allocation strategy - directing 80% toward project advancement and 20% toward high-grade exploration targets. The company benefits from strong government support, with Newfoundland targeting five new mines by 2030, and enjoys robust community backing through quarterly stakeholder meetings. Located just 15 kilometers from Gander, the project has access to skilled labor, with 80,000 people living within an hour's drive, many of whom are experienced mining professionals currently working fly-in/fly-out rotations elsewhere.A preliminary economic assessment due by June 2025 will provide the first comprehensive economic evaluation, examining various development scenarios including toll milling arrangements and optimal mine sequencing. The deposit's surface accessibility and visible high-grade zones reduce geological uncertainty, while multiple vein clusters offer flexibility in development approaches. This combination of proven management, high-grade accessible resources, and supportive operating environment positions New Found Gold to capitalize on favorable gold sector dynamics.Learn more: https://cruxinvestor.com/companies/new-found-goldSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com
