Shortly after we recorded our last episode and mentioned the bill, the House of Representatives tried and failed to vote on HR 9495, the “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act” bill. House Republicans tried to suspend the rules and push a vote through, and got 52 Democrats to vote with them, but weren't able to get the ⅔ majority they needed under House procedural rules. But HR 9495, also called the “nonprofit killer” bill, isn't dead yet. If passed, it would allow the Trump administration to revoke an organization's nonprofit status by simply saying the organization is connected to or supports terrorism. It's another weapon the US government would have to attempt to crush dissent, targeting organizations standing up against the genocide in Gaza and many more. Civil society, activist, nonprofit and legal organizations from the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund to the National Council of Nonprofits, CAIR, ACLU and beyond have called for the bill to be rejected. To understand where this bill comes from and what its impact would be, we're joined today by Wassim Kanaan, a grass-roots-oriented advocate, focusing on direct advocacy and working with the community on high impact projects.Wassim currently serves as the Chair-person for the New Jersey Chapter of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP).Support the show

Cheryl Gatti, who has been an experienced LNC for over 30 years, compares the early days of LNC work with the current environment and has valuable recommendations for any LNC to improve their business. She considers the AALNC a useful resource and encourages chapter membership. She recommends a self-assessment for areas that need improvement and education in those areas. Of particular importance is expertise in writing and speaking with clarity. While nurses get no formal training in the basics of running a business, they do learn critical thinking and analysis, as well as how to break down complex medical issues so that laypeople can understand them. This helps them hugely in the expert witness world. Cheryl highly recommends that LNCS try to get their work published in journals and/or books. Not only does this give your name and brand exposure, but you will also have editors who go over your work and, through their suggestions, can help you become a better writer. LNCs may get opportunities for high-volume volume work like mass torts. Cheryl advises that you consider whether you and/or your firm can handle it but not let fear stop you. [2:57] Justin talks to Chris about his career managing risk and safety for major companies and chains like Pathmark, Rite Aid, and Walmart and how worker comp and the fundamentals of risk management influenced his career. [3:23] Justin welcomes Chris Hansen to RIMScast. Chris is a longtime member of the RIMS New Jersey Chapter. [4:13] With a degree in industrial engineering, Chris started as an engineer for Pathmark Supermarkets. After the insurance crisis of the 1980s, he became the company's first safety manager. They didn't know what to do with the position until they had him report to Risk Management. When the Risk Director was promoted, Chris took that role. [6:21] Chris led a team of great people until the company was acquired about 12 years later. At its biggest, his team was about 20 people, including clerical support staff. [7:06] In the days before email, if a store had an accident, they filled out a five-part multicolor form and stuck it in the interoffice mail. It showed up in the risk management department after about four days. In the meantime, an injured party was wondering why they weren't getting a phone call. Email is a big improvement. [8:21] Chris went to Walmart from Pathmark, He wanted to work for a company too large to be bought by a competitor. He was a divisional safety manager. Eventually, Chris led the Safety and OSHA Compliance Program in Asset Protection for Walmart's 4,500 retail stores with 1.3 million employees. He focused on reducing loss frequency. [9:42] After Walmart, Chris went to Rite Aid in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Chris was VP of Risk Management at Rite Aid for about six years. Much had changed in risk management from the time Chris had left Pathmark. At Pathmark, there was no discussion of cyber or employment practice liability. [10:41] When you're in retail, but also you're a healthcare provider, you're right in the crosshairs. He enjoyed the work and had terrific business partners. Chris retired in the Spring of 2020. One of Chris's last projects was helping the offices go virtual. The retail stores remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic. [12:10] Chris's job was about protecting the employees the best they could and coming up with HR policies on the fly, including pay. The pharmacists had to be there to take care of the patients. After that project, Chris was ready to retire. [12:54] Chris tells how his risk philosophy changed from Pathmark to Rite Aid. His aha moment happened in 1992. James Carville, a political consultant for Bill Clinton, came up with, “It's the economy, Stupid!” for the Clinton campaign. Chris printed up a sign, “It's the frequency, Stupid!” as a risk mantra over his desk and he used it for all his career. [14:43] If you take care of eliminating accidents, everything else takes care of itself. All risk-associated costs go down if you take care of frequency first. Chris has 28 consecutive years of claim frequency reductions for his employers! [15:19] RIMS plug time! Sponsor an episode of RIMScast! Contact us at pd@rims.org. [17:11] What mindset is needed for the risk leader of a widely-known brand? What's paramount is that you've got to protect the reputation of the organization. When a company fills 300 million scripts a year, even a low error rate can be disastrous. What can happen if there's a high-profile claim or a data breach? [18:04] Chris has dealt with floods, fires, stabbings, and shootings throughout his career. Those are high-profile events that have to be handled delicately. You have to be in lock-step with your business partners, public affairs people, and the leadership team. Even dealing with an individual claim, that person's a customer and they have neighbors. [18:34] When you're self-administered for liability claims, you're not handing the claim off to someone else. You've got to treat people equitably, with respect, but at the same time, protect the interests of the company the best that you can. It's a delicate balance. [19:23] Chris was at Walmart when an employee was trampled to death at Valley Stream as a store opened on Black Friday in 2008. It was Chris's first Black Friday at Walmart. He had never seen an event of that scale. [20:01] Chris was at a store in Union, New Jersey, standing to the side of the entrance when they unlocked the doors and a horde of people came rushing through. There were pallets of televisions down the first aisle. By the time the crown had thinned, there was nothing left but empty pallets and a few boxes that had been stepped on. [20:29] It was the most surreal thing Chris had ever seen. Shortly after that, Chris got a call from his vice president at the HQ in Arkansas. She asked where he was and how soon could he get to Valley Stream. Pulling into the parking lot, seeing how desolate it was, and seeing police tape around the entrance, is something Chris will never forget. [21:12] Chris explains the very unfortunate situation. They had started to open the doors to let a pregnant woman through because she was being pushed and the crowd just thought that was the opening. They just came rushing through the doors and an employee who was standing there got trampled and killed. [21:35] OSHA was there and Chris had to deal with their investigation. Nassau County detectives were there, as it was a crime scene. [21:54] What happened as a result of that tragedy was that Walmart put together the most comprehensive crowd-control program that had ever existed in retail. They brought in consultants who were specialists in crowd control who had done security for Super Bowls and big arenas. There's a science to it and Walmart had been a novice. [22:36] From that point forward, there was a plan and everybody stuck to the plan. They have never seen another tragedy like that again. [23:11] That particular store, in Nassau County on Long Island, was the closest store to New York City so it was a very congested, high-volume store. Chris has never seen anything that cataclysmic and he never will again, he hopes. [24:20] As a consultant, Chris is still focused on frequency; preventing accidents, but now it's personal. When he's working with power tools around the house or cleaning gutters, preventing accidents is the first thing he thinks about. He asks himself what could go wrong? Have someone hold the ladder! [25:10] Chris has always felt you have to have good data to manage risk. That means knowing who your business partners are who have that data, whether it's engineering, HR, or others. Chris is still focused on data, making sure he knows his numbers, At this point, the numbers he focuses on are cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight. [25:52] Chris has Fundamentals of Risk Management on August 8th and 9th. Registration closes on August 7th. What will Chris be teaching? The course talks about risk management as a corporate function and how it fits into the organization. Chris talks about risk management processes, fundamentals, and procedures. [26:31] Chris wraps up the seminar by talking about risk management as a profession. From his experience, it's been a heck of a ride. It's a profession that he's very glad to have had an opportunity to work in. “War stories” help Chris cover things in context. If war stories don't get their attention, he talks about his battle scars. [27:17] On November 7th and 8th Chris teaches Managing Worker Compensation Employers' Liability and Employment Practices in the U.S. Chris teaches what is the legal obligation for all employers. It's very procedural and formula-driven. There are nuances to it, as laws vary by state. Worker Compensation is a state-based system. [28:01] Chris gives folks the flavor of everything involved the loss control side, the cost containment opportunities to manage claims more effectively, take better care of your people, and get them back to work. [28:16] From there, Chris teaches Elmployer's Liability, which comes into play when something involving your employee is not covered under Worker Compensation. It's a defense policy. Chris wraps up the seminar with Employment Practices Liability, which covers all the bad things that can happen to people and how the policies respond. [29:02] There are links to registration pages for these courses in the show notes. If you're a RIMS member, you get the benefit of reduced rates. [29:15] Chris shares his advice for young risk professionals or anyone considering the risk management profession: “There are two things. The first is to be inquisitive. Ask questions. RIMS has a whole variety of courses available and so many different publications and things. … Risk Management Magazine is a terrific one.” [30:18] “The other thing I would say is to develop your network and build relationships. Develop relationships with your internal business partners, because risk management is a discipline that touches everything in the organization. And to be effective, you have to have command of pretty much everything that goes on in your organization.” [30:45] “The other thing I would say is if you're in driving distance from a RIMS chapter, get involved with that chapter. You'll get an opportunity to talk to your peers, to share concerns, seek advice and guidance, in real time over lunch, and hear some terrific speakers.” The New Jersey Chapter gets some phenomenal speakers. [31:46] Justin tells Chris it's been a real pleasure to see him again. There are links to the two courses on this episode's show notes. Be sure to pounce on Fundamentals of Risk Management, on August 8th and 9th. Registration closes on August 7th. Justin thanks Chris for joining us on RIMScast. A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: As she watched the humanitarian crisis unfold due to the war in Ukraine, S. Chien wanted to do something to help. She came up with the idea for the Taiwan Cares project and together with Dr. Monty Wang and Dr. Bo-Chheng Lin, mobilized the efforts of over 30 Taiwanese Americans from New Jersey to raise over $9000 in 24 hours. The funds were used to purchase and ship urgently needed medical supplies and baby formula to people in Ukraine. Chien is the President of New Jersey Chapter of North America Taiwanese Women's Association. Dr. Monty Wang is a retired physician. [INSERT photo of Dr. Bo-Chheng Lin] Dr. Bo-Chheng Lin, is cofounder of New Jersey Living Well Club and an elder of the New Jersey Taiwanese American Fellowship Presbyterian Church (TAFPC). I learned about their project Taiwan Cares from an email that was forwarded to me with a touching video created by Shi Chien about how over $9,000 was raised in 24 hours in order to send humanitarian relief to people in Ukraine. With everything that's been happening in the world today, I think that we need to tell more stories of the good that people are doing in the world. The Taiwanese Care project team will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees in cooperation with the Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York (TAC-GNY) which has set up the Ukraine-Taiwan Humanitarian Fund Drive. Donors may contact them for details and/or send checks to: Taiwanese American Council (TAC) of Greater New York TAC / Taiwan Center 137-44 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11354 Make checks payable to TAC/GNY. Please write the following as the check's memo: Ukraine – Taiwan Cares TAC-GNY is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. After receiving a donation check, TAC-GNY will send the donor a tax-deductible receipt. The fundraising drive ends mid-April. This episode of Talking Taiwan has been sponsored by the Taiwan Elite Alliance 優社 and the Taiwanese United Fund. The Taiwan Elite Alliance 優社 was established in 2000 to promote Taiwanese and Taiwanese American arts and literature, and to protect and enhance the human rights, freedom and democracy of the people in Taiwan. The Taiwanese United Fund is an arts and culture foundation that celebrates the cultural heritages of Taiwanese Americans. Established in 1986, the foundation's mission is to facilitate cultural exchange between the Taiwanese American community and other American cultural communities, hoping to enrich and expand our cultural experiences. To learn more about TUF visit their website http://www.tufusa.org/ Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: How the Taiwan Cares Project was initiated Dr. Monty Wang talks about how he's visited both Ukraine and Russia and his impressions Why they only had 24 hours to raise funds How the Taiwan Cares Project team partnered with a Ukrainian Orthodox Church in New Jersey to deliver the supplies to people in need in Ukraine Why they decided to purchase urgently needed baby formula and medical supplies to send to Ukraine rather than sending a cash donation How Dr. Wang planned what items to order and the quick turnaround time in order to get them delivered to the Ukrainian church The Taiwan Care project will be a continued and continuous effort How Taiwan has made disaster relief contributions to Japan (Fukushima earthquake) and Indonesia How Ukraine's situation is similar and different from Taiwan's China's incursions into Taiwan's ADIZ How people from Taiwan have donated around $240 million U.S, dollars to Ukraine The Holodomor, Ukraine's Great Famine Possible future initiatives of the Taiwan Cares project The YouTube video S. Chien created about the Taiwan Cares project and the music she used for it The Ukrainian folk instrument, the bandura that was banned by Russia How they purchased 900 pounds of supplies to send as humanitarian relief to Ukraine The design of the Taiwan Cares label and how it includes the Ukrainian words for “Help from Taiwan” Related Links: To view all related links for this article, click link below: https://talkingtaiwan.com/taiwan-cares-humanitarian-efforts-for-ukraine-raise-9000-in-24-hours-ep-176/

The Vocation of Fatherhood with Special guest Mr. Kelly Atkinson This episode my Mr. Atkinson and I explore fatherhood- the "Act of being responsible and a servant leader”. Mothers and fathers are equally important. They both are pillars to the development of our children. Conceptually things are different for women and men. We need both perspectives and relationships. You don't have to be the biological father to experience fatherhood. We are grateful for the uncles, coaches, clergy, neighbors, and step dads that take responsibility and have a positive influence in our community. Let's take responsibility Fatherhood is who you are not a title you carry As a father when you take responsibility you are in the state of control you are accountable for the way you behave and react. You are the authority Remember we are all growing. Responsibility also leads to power. You have the power to penalize & discipline as well as provide love and compassion. They are equally important for the well being of raising healthy adults. Everything doesn't need a hammer. Practice restraining and temperament You are the role model. You are the model of a responsible father or mother. 5 Keys to Fatherhood Honesty Compassion & Respect Fairness Accountability Courage Kelly Atkinson has over 25 years of leadership and management experience working in Corporate America. The New Jersey Chapter of the Afro American Historical & Genealogical Society and Genealogy Adventures had a round table discussion about the lost connection between genealogy and family history. The special live-streamed event was a special one for us here at Genealogy Adventures. Our research team repeatedly say that genealogy and history are inseparable. History studies major national and regional events at the macro level. Genealogy and family history studies how national and regional events played out at the micro-level when it comes to the states and towns our ancestors lived in. In other words, History looks at the forest. Genealogy looks at the individual trees.History had its role to play in the choices our ancestors made - as well as the fate that may have befallen them. History might also be the missing key to break through a stubborn brick wall.As regular Genealogy Adventures' viewers know: Donya and Brian constantly discuss how genealogy has taught them more about the history of the United States than what they learned in the classroom. The Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) is a Global business network of 13,000+ leading entrepreneurs in 186 chapters and 58 countries. EO enables business owners to learn from each other, leading to greater business success and an enriched personal life. They educate, they transform, they inspire and they offer invaluable resources in the form of global events, leadership-development programs, an online entrepreneur forum and executive education opportunities, among other offerings designed for personal and professional growth. Recently, Adam Connors had the opportunity to speak at one of the New Jersey Chapter's recent conferences. Following Adam's talk, he sat down with some of the Entrepreneurs there for a one-on-one conversation. This special episode of Conversations with Connors features a chat with 10 entrepreneurs from nine vastly different companies. Below is a small snippet about what you can expect to hear in this podcast: Todd Leonardis & Steven Schneider – Kramer Industries Todd and Steven run a very niche business that sells mainly to manufacturers. Through their very different backgrounds, they were able to partner up together to significantly grow their business over the course of many years. Jeff Chavkin – Geoscape Solar Jeff runs a solar energy business that started out in a very complex way. His wife was a partner but they were going through a divorce. Another partner of his had a wife who was best friends with his now ex-wife. His experience through EO allows him to get through that and still have a successful business more than a decade later. Mark Ciapka – ADS Works Mark builds complex web applications for any industry who needs them. Mark loves talking to people and always comes up with an excuse to start a conversation. His natural knack for conversation lends itself well to what networking is all about. Brian Tweer – Jersey Shore Supplements Brian owns a business similar to that of a Vitamin Shoppe or a GNC. But he built a relationship with customers that was so strong, that pretty much his entire staff are individuals who used to be customers. That kind of rapport and trust built with those in his community has allowed his business to grow significantly. Kevin Mahoney – FindTape.com Kevin Mahoney sells all kinds of different tapes. It could be any kind of adhesive tape or the tape you see police put up at crime scenes. Through his networking experience, Mahoney was able to avoid losing a large amount of money in lawsuits to patent trolls. Susan Michael – Wealth Management Expert Susan runs a wealth management company. Susan has an incredible story detailing how she went from a teacher, while also being a military spouse and raising two children, to running her own wealth management company. Andrew Tupler – Tupler Financial Andrew runs a financial company. He networks by meeting with different individuals across different industries a couple of times a year over breakfast or lunch, to discuss all the different ways in which everyone can mutually benefit one another. Ellen Pietrowitz-Phillips – L-E-M Plastics If there is a device that has plastic on it, it’s likely that Ellen was somehow part of the process of getting it there. She has parts on cell towers as well as on the international space station. Her business was hit by a hurricane twice. And let’s just say that without networking, her business would no longer exist today. Sejal Lakhani – Techerwerxe Sejal runs a business that acts as the IT department for businesses who need one. Her networking style involves being on the phone constantly. All of these incredibly successful entrepreneurs do a much better job of telling their own stories and we highly recommend you listen to the full episode of Conversations with Connors. It’s worth noting that Entrepreneurs Organization is an exclusive invite-only group. That’s how you know these particular entrepreneurs are at least one step above many others. Media relations has been a mainstay of the PR industry for decades, but that's changing, especially as newsrooms shrink. Companies large and small are now telling their own stories, publishing them on SEO-enhanced online news hubs, and getting bottom-line results. Brand journalism (also known as content marketing) is dramatically changing how we practice PR. Skillfully written news reports that resonate with customers and humanize a company's message are the new PR frontier. In this episode of the Lubetkin on Communications podcast, we present a panel program from the Public Relations Society of America's New Jersey Chapter, held October 19, 2017 in Rahway, NJ.

We’re featuring an interview with jazz bassist Rufus Reid on this week’s episode ofContrabass Conversations. This interview was conducted by guest host Win Hinkle, a former member of the Florida Symphony Orchestra (this orchestra dissolved in 1993) who also worked in Florida as a trombonist, electric bassist, and double bassist, including a lot of time at Walt Disney World. Rufus Reid is, without a doubt, one of the most influential bassists working in jazz today, and he has had a significant impact on double bass performance and pedagogy throughout his career. His book The Evolving Bassist was one of the earliest of the contemporary generation of double bass method books, and it continues to be a foundational text for double bass students. I recommend it to all of my students who are interested in jazz, and I use many of his exercises for arco study and sight reading practice even with students who only study classical music. We’re also featuring Rufus Reid and bassist Michael Moore performing All Blues from their album Double Bass Delights, as well as some listener feedback, bass news, a link of the week, and much more. Check out more recordings of Rufus in various settings on his website’s recordings page. Enjoy! About Rufus Reid: Born on February 10, 1944 in Atlanta, GA., Rufus Reid was raised in Sacramento, California where he played the trumpet through junior high and high school. Upon graduation from Sacramento High School, he entered the United States Air Force as a trumpet player. During that period he began to be seriously interested in the bass. After fulfilling his duties in the military, Rufus had decided he wanted to pursue a career as a professional bassist. He moved to Seattle, Washington, where he began serious study with James Harnett of the Seattle Symphony. He continued his education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he studied with Warren Benfield and principal bassist, Joseph Guastefeste, both of the Chicago Symphony. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Music Degree as a Performance Major on the Double Bass. The MidAtlantic Arts Foundation awarded Rufus The 2005 Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award for his dedication to America’s National Cultural Treasure: Jazz, for his personal and professional commitment to Jazz Education in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The International Society of Bassists presented Rufus with their highest honor, The Distinguished Achievement Award, in 2001. The New Jersey Chapter of the IAJE named him OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR of 1999. The International Association of Jazz Educators awarded Rufus the Humanitarian Award in 1997 BASS PLAYER magazine, awarded Rufus the 1998 Jazz Educator Achievement Award. About Win Hinkle: Win Hinkle is dedicated double bassist and a former trombonist spending 17 seasons with the Florida Symphony Orchestra in Orlando, until its demise in April of 1993. He worked as a double bassist, bass guitarist, and trombonist for many years in Florida including a lot of time at Walt Disney World. He recently sold his last bass guitar and only plays the double bass. He currently lives in Boston but still tries to spend time in time in Florida, especially in the Winter months.
