Stephen Carter doesn't do podcasts to make new friends. That's obvious early in his appearance here, which proves to be one of the most entertaining episodes we've ever released. How Venturer Scouts from the 23rd Nepean Scout Group kept their heads during the Jasper wildfire evacuation. Podcast Topics Scouter Ken is joined by Cadence James (National Youth Commissioner for Scouts Canada, and a Rover Scout with the 23rd Nepean Scout Group), Molly Prevost (another Rover Scout with the 23rd), and Foster Millett (a Venturer Scout with the 23rd) to discuss their trip to Jasper National Park...which saw them arrive just prior to the massive wildfire that devastated much of the area. It's a story that Scouts Canada has retold in a few places already, highlighting the resilience of the youth and the attitude of preparedness that Scouting equipped them with. All of that comes out in the conversation, as does the value of being able to find the good in a crisis situation. Programming Note: The podcast is going to shift its production schedule a bit for 2025. There will probably be just one full-length episode per month, with shorter news & PSA episodes filling in the other weeks. Shout-Outs Cadence's shout-outs include Lucas Normandeau and Krystal Reid (both with Cascadia Council), Willa Holmes (from Northern Lights Council), and all the Venturers and Scouters who came on the trip. Molly and Foster's shout-outs include all the Scouters who came on the trip: Mike Hubbard, Brian Bezaire, John James, and Devin Morrison. Three months after a wildfire burned 32,500 hectares of Jasper National Park, locals in the municipality are finding a way to rebuild their lives next to the charred remains of what they've lost. As this fire season comes to an end and the tourist town prepares for winter, Now or Never meets Jasperites as they navigate grief and new beginnings together. Joe Urie, a Métis tour guide and longtime local, brings Ify Chiwetelu and Trevor Dineen up to Old Fort Point, for a mountain top view of what Jasper looks like today. Lorraine Stanko searches through the debris of her friends' and neighbours' homes, trying to find valuables that weren't destroyed by the wildfire. She hopes to bring them, and herself, closure, after her own home in town burned down. Blocks away from where the Stanko's house once stood, Sviatoslav Rud and Nina Egorova's rented home is still standing, but it is still uninhabitable due to smoke damage. They're sleeping in a borrowed RV in front of their house even as the temperatures dip. As volunteer firefighter Kim Stark battled the blaze in town, her own house burned to the ground. Now, as she tries to talk to her three young children about the devastation she's learning as much from them as they are from her.Grab a plate at the town's community dinner, a 20-year-old tradition in Jasper, that has new meaning and urgency right now.And we meet Stephen Nelson in a Hinton Hotel after his seniors lodge burned down. After 16 years in Jasper with no stable home - he moved into the lodge 11 days before the evacuation order. He is preparing to leave Jasper for good -- "the love of his life" that won't seem to let him stay.

It's Friday, August 23rd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Three Pakistani Christian girls held ransom by Muslim employer Three girls illegally detained by their employers were forced to testify that they had converted to Islam and wished to return to their captors, but thankfully a judge in Pakistan returned them to their Christian parents, reports Morning Star News. On August 15th, Justice Shakil Ahmed of the Lahore High allowed the sisters, ages 9, 13, and 16, to retract their forced claims and gave custody of them back to their parents, Naveed and Mina Masih, both of whom are brick kiln workers. The couple had sent their daughters to a Muslim woman, Haleema Bibi, in September 2023 for placement as domestic workers, but soon Bibi told them that their employers were demanding $1,077 as a “security deposit” to return their oldest daughter. The oldest daughter, Hina, said that her Muslim employer, Madiha Sameer, had told her that converting to Islam was the only way to save herself from her family. She said, “He would send me to Dubai as a sex worker or could even sell my body organs for money.” According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the seventh most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Praise God for this family's reunification. 2,000 march for Jesus in Prague On Saturday, August 3, Salvation Crew, in collaboration with the Norwegian missionary movement Jesus Revolution and Reach the World, organized the second Jesus March in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The event was a follow-up to a similar gathering in November 2023, which was then attended by 1,000 people. This year, participation doubled to 2,000 people, reports Evangelical Focus. From the stage, Christian song and dance was interspersed with young people who offered colorful testimonies about how they repented of their sins and trusted Jesus Christ for His forgiveness. Hillary Clinton claimed Kamala protected children, but is pro-abortion This past Monday night, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Hillary Clinton, who lost the presidential election to Donald Trump in 2016, claimed that Kamala Harris was a champion of the children. CLINTON: “Kamala has the character, experience and vision to lead us forward. I know her heart and her integrity. “We both got our start as young lawyers helping children who were abused and neglected. Those kids stay with you. Kamala carries with her the hopes of every child she protected, every family she helped, every community she served.” After claiming that Kamala Harris protected children, Hillary, like most Democrats, then ironically justified Kamala's advocacy of killing children in the womb. Listen to the disturbingly long and loud roar of approval by the delegates at the Democratic National Convention in favor of child-killing. CLINTON: “So, as president, she will always have our backs. She will restore abortion rights nationwide. (cheers and applause) With faith in each other and love in our hearts, let's send Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House.” Exodus 20:13 says, “You shall not murder." Trump unveils tough new penalties for illegal criminals on Arizona border While the Democrats were gathered in Chicago, Donald Trump went to Sierra Vista, Arizona, along our southern border, to draw a visual contrast between his approach to securing the border and that of his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, reports The Associated Press. Paul Perez, the president of the Border Patrol union, said, “To my right is what we call the Trump wall. This was the wall that was built under President Trump. To my left, we have what we call the Kamala wall. It's just sitting there doing nothing, lying down.” Joining Trump on his Thursday border visit were the mothers of children who were killed by illegal immigrants allowed entrance across the border by the Biden-Harris administration during Kamala Harris' reign as the Border Czar. Former President Trump unveiled some tough new policies. TRUMP: “We will impose tough new sentences on illegal alien criminals. These include 10-year mandatory minimum sentences for anyone guilty of human smuggling, a guaranteed life sentence for anyone guilty of child trafficking, and a death penalty for anyone guilty of child or woman sex trafficking. “We will liberate our country from the illegal alien drug dealers, robbers, murderers, gang members, and child predators. We will make America safe again for our citizens.” Young father wins custody of son after ex-wife raised him ‘nonbinary' A dad recently won full custody of his 4-year-old son after a legal battle with his ex-wife who wanted to raise their boy as “nonbinary,” reports LifeSiteNews.com. Harrison Tinsley now has full custody of his son Sawyer after a “4 1/2-year” battle that has been going on since the boy was born. The boy's mother used “they/them” pronouns for Sawyer as well as dressing him like a girl, as previously reported by The Daily Signal. The father said, “Definitely my faith, Christianity,” but also “family, friends” and a “deep feeling in my soul that I have to do this no matter what pain I go through.” That pain included court battles, a visit from Child Protective Services, raising money for legal fees, and dealing with an ex with mental health problems and substance abuse issues. 18-year-old guides 16 hikers on wildfire evacuation route And finally, out from the ash and flames of the wildfires that scorched Canada's Jasper National Park comes the story of a heroic 18-year-old who saved over 16 people, reports GoodNewsNetwork.org. Working as a volunteer firefighter and kitchen aide at a lodge, Colleen Knull received an evacuation order on a Monday in late July. Stepping outside she saw smoke rising up the mountainsides, and knew that there were people still camping in the area. KNULL: “I like to be able to help people. I like the fact that what I do in my work does good.” Alerting everyone at the lodge, she went out to gather the campers until 16 people were ready to evacuate. Darkness was falling, and getting out of the area meant a 4-hour hike across treacherous terrain. KNULL: “The smoke was coming up from the mountainside. It was big.” Rebecca Tocher, one of those rescued, described the environment. TOCHER: “My eyes were burning. There was ash falling constantly.” Another hiker added this. HIKER: “The sky was bright red. It wasn't black. It was red when you looked up.” Knull used her knowledge of the area and tracking skills to help navigate the 16 people down the trail. Tocher added, “She was an amazing leader and was just making sure that everyone was working together.” Incredibly, all 16 hikers made it out ahead of the fires and successfully evacuated in the back of Knull's pickup truck. KNULL: “I do it because, at the end of the day, I know I'd want to go home, and I'd want to have somebody there to help.” John 15:13 says, “ Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” Or, in this case, for strangers. It's the third killing of a prominent militant we've learned about in as many days. The question now... how the deaths may affect ceasefire negotiations. Also: Back to school... already? Some schools in Canada have what's called a balanced calendar: less time off during warmer months, but parents and teachers say it helps with the "summer slide" learning loss. And we'll have an update on wildlife in Jasper National Park, the woes of booksellers along the Seine, and more.

We are 8 years from the devastating Fort McMurray wildfires that forced more than 90,000 people from their homes and cost nearly $9 Billion. Many of us are wondering how people + fire should co-exist. I am fortunate today to be joined by two experts:Edward Struzik is a fellow at Queen's Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy in the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University. He's been writing about scientific and environmental issues for more than 30 years. He's the author of 8 books, including Firestorm: how Wildfire will shape our future and Dark Days at Noon: the future of fire, both written in the aftermath of the Fort McMurray blaze. He's a regular contributor to Yale Environment 360, an international online publication of the Yale School of the Environment. His articles appear in Scientific American, Policy Options, Canadian Geographic, among others. He makes his home in Edmonton Alberta, 4 hours east of Jasper, across Highway 16.Kate Lindsay is the Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC). Kate is a graduate of the University of Victoria and a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio). The call to evacuate came late at night. Thousands had to find somewhere to go. Some of them drove for up to 12 hours. Then all they could do was watched as a massive blaze in Jasper National Park tore through the town at its core. But even as the fire continued to burn outside of the town on Monday, work was being done to save what was left, including critical infrastructure. Both the park and town of Jasper hold a special place in the hearts of so many Canadians, but was there ever a chance to protect it? Or was this destruction inevitable? In this episode, we delve into the contrasting perspectives of social media usage among older and younger generations of photographers. We explore both the importance and unimportance of social media platforms for your photography goals and how to align your amount of social media usage with your ideal career outcomes. We argue that there may not be any point in putting undue importance on social media if it doesn't serve what you're trying to accomplish with your photography career, sparking a crucial conversation about the relevance of social media in the context of individual career objectives. Thanks to WhiteWall for being our lead sponsor this episode! But both sides agree on the importance of sorting out the claims. “The process of negotiating land claims should be an absolute pillar of reconciliation,” said Ken Coates, a historian at the University of Saskatchewan who studies treaties and is a consultant to indigenous groups. “This is our chance to get it right and if we don't — boy, when will we get the chance again?” 」 Of the many issues dividing Canada's federal and provincial governments from its indigenous people, land claims are among the most symbolically important and economically consequential, often involving vast amounts of territory. Some claims involve hundreds of millions of dollars, and tribes are often interested in controlling the land at issue, by, for example, having a say over logging, oil exploration and mining. One claim by various Algonquin groups involves the 8.9 million acres of the Ottawa watershed — which includes Canada's Parliament buildings and Supreme Court. The government thought it had settled that claim in principle a year ago, but it has ended up in litigation anyway. The claims are legally thorny, often requiring historians, archaeologists, geographers and geologists to give evidence sometimes stretching back before recorded history to support, or challenge, them. In some regions, land may have been occupied by different indigenous groups at different times, even changing hands after battles that were unrecorded. These groups may all assert rights, and claims can overlap. Then there is the problem of treaties. Some indigenous groups, like the Algonquins, never signed treaties giving up their land. The government says it is talking with about 140 indigenous groups in that situation. Others did sign treaties, and a government tribunal that deals with treaty disputes has 72 cases and is so overwhelmed that it cannot estimate how long it will take to resolve them. The result is that settlement negotiations occur at a frustratingly slow pace. Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/320990/web/

In this podcast episode, we reflect on our recent trip to the Canadian Rockies, specifically Banff and Jasper National Park. We hosted our 2nd annual Photographer Mindset Retreat in these locations, immersing ourselves in the stunning landscapes and encountering abundant wildlife. Despite challenges like rain and wildfire smoke, we adapted, pivoted, and made the most of our adventure. Listen as we review the trip and use the scenarios that occurred to more deeply explore the photography and mindset principles we routinely discuss on the show. In this episode some of things we talk about but aren't limited to are:Making your trips more affordable by reaching out to companies and tourism boardsHow to keep a positive attitude and perspective when external factors are plaguing your plans or tripHow to know when to pivot or make a change vs. keeping the status quo or sticking to the original planHow suffering and discomfort is a usually short term experience and why that's worth regularly pushing throughThanks to Tamron Americas for sponsoring this episode!
