Our first Mountain West basketball podcast is here for the season (sorry for no preseason shows) we have Jeremy Mauss being joined by Andrew Dieckhoff to kick things off with some big picture hoops. Early on it seems Utah State is clearly the best team and they aren't even at full strength and San Diego State is in the neighborhood and then there is a jumbled mess of a teams to pick from. UNLV has a new coach and is struggling, Air Force is disappointing, and New Mexico is the closest to the top two but aren't quite there. The Rams are a team with Nico Carvacho who is an overlooked player and even if Colorado State is not in the mix for a conference title, he should be in the running for player of the year. We both expect Colorado State to pull off an upset or two along the way. Finally, San Jose State might be slowly getting better and the next step is to more than double the wins from last year and challenge for double-digit victories. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support Learn more about your ad choices. Nevada had several opportunities to beat Boise State last week, but too many mistakes cost the Wolf Pack (5:40). Now Jay Norvell will look to for a vital road win at Hawaii (12:26). Jeremy Mauss, publisher of the Mountain West Wire, shares his thoughts on the status of the conference (39:56). For slants, Adam and Nathan power rank Reno bar crawls before this weekend's zombie crawl (1:00:21). This latest mini-episode features Crowley Sullivan who covers Michigan State over at Spartans Wire and he joins Jeremy Mauss to preview the Utah State game vs. the Spartans on Friday night. The Spartans bring back nearly every player on both sides of the ball and over 90 percent total production. The defense could be the best in the country and the offense looks to be balanced in the run and pass game. However, the suggestion that Utah State will just be blown out is not entirely the case. Michigan State has struggled in openers and in the early part of games, plus the Aggies should be a pretty good team this year and at least be a pest toward the Spartans in this opening game. This week's show features Jeremy Mauss going solo and the show starts by discussing some spring news and notes, but the main portion of the show is interviewing San Jose State running back coach Alonzo Carter. Carter first burst onto our radar this past week after he broke out some dance moves to M.C. Hammers's "U Can't Touch This" after a recent practice. He discussed his touring career with M.C. Hammer but also about how he moved up in the coaching world where Carter had great success winning seven high school titles and multiple conference titles at Contra Costa College. Perhaps his most successful achievement is the approximately 100 players he has sent on to play at the Division I level. There is also a story about Oprah and the Grammy's. We also asked if there would be an encore to his dance moves. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support Learn more about your ad choices.
