Football is back. Sort of. On Wednesday, Florida State football began fall camp with its first practice. Head coach Mike Norvell told the local Tallahassee media that his team was basically in “pajamas,” as the Noles will not put the pads on before the weekend. But the head man said his team was able to work in a variety of different groups, including seven-on-seven, team periods, and special teams. Even without pads on, no practice can be wasted with FSU's Week Zero game just one month from today. “Going into today, I wanted to see communication. I wanted to see alignment. Guys getting in position based off the call with urgency…I thought our guys had a great urgency in their communication. I thought they did a good job getting aligned with tempo.” Later in his press conference, Norvell touched on the day of the top three quarterbacks on the depth chart, and seemed especially pleased with his QB1, Ashton Daniels. “You felt his comfort. There were a couple of plays, and maybe in the spring he might try to force something into a situation, (but) today was really clean for him in that regard…I really liked his presence and how he went through the process today.” On Kevin Sperry: “I thought Kevin had some good and moments through the day. He had a couple of throws that he missed. But, he understands what to do and how to do.” On Malachi Marshall: “Today was Malachi's first day here, and he had a couple of moments that he gets to grow through as well. But for his first practice, I was pleased with what I saw.” Off the field, former Florida State WR Anquan Boldin talked to the team yesterday ahead of fall camp. Norvell touched on why he brought in the 14-year NFL veteran to inspire his group as the season begins. “He's one of the great all-time Seminoles and is a guy that is about all the right things…Everything about his journey (made me) excited for our team to hear and guys got to ask some great questions” Ashlynd Barker, who broke the rock for Florida State at the end of summer workouts, took the stand next and discussed what he likes about the secondary. “This is one of my favorite groups that we have had so far because we added a couple of new people and we bonded so quickly. I think that was a special thing…There's no ego or talk back.” Micahi Danzy rounded out the day by telling the media what he wants to work on in the offseason and how he thinks he can improve in year two. “As you know, I struggled on intermediate routes last year, so I wanted to get on the JUGS, work on my catching, and work on getting out of my breaks. So, I have been focusing on that and pushing myself.” The Seminoles will take the field for practice on Thursday and Friday, before receiving an off day on Saturday. Learn more about your ad choices. Florida State football is set to open fall camp this week, kicking off the just-over-a-month journey to the Seminoles' season opener against New Mexico State. Coach Mike Norvell met with the media Monday, addressing everything from the health of the team to what he's seen from starting quarterback Ashton Daniels to the looming five-for-five eligibility changes to freshman receivers Jasen Lopez and Devin Carter. He opened the news conference by sharing the impressions he's had from his squad since spring camp wrapped up, saying he's impressed by the work put in to prep for the start of the season. "It's been, it's been really an enjoyable process for us seeing the guys that have been here, the guys that have grown, developed, guys that have poured years of service into this program," Norvell said. "As they have matured through it and the work that they've poured in, as well as the newcomers, whether it was the over 20 freshmen that joined in January, to the same with the transfers that have come in, I think we really have added a great group of young men, the right mindset, the right approach, you put in an incredible amount of work to put ourselves in position to get started here in fall camp." Norvell said his vision for this year's squad is for it to be player-led and coach-inspired, something star wide receiver Duce Robinson has seen in action already. "That's my job is to be here to provide them with structure, to provide them with a standard and inspire them to go be the best that they can be. But at the end of the day, they got to be the ones that are willing to take that, are willing to lead that, are willing to challenge each other. But I mean, that's what I want. I want a coach-inspired football team that's player-led. "It takes everything around the program, on the field, off the field, and we all have our journey and there's different challenges for a freshman than there is for a fifth-year senior. There's different challenges for guys that are battling wherever they are in their collegiate career, but being able to have guys who will help them along that are going to be side by side with them as they step on the field. That's what I think can help define a great team and something that's necessary." Daniels drew praise for his approach to the offseason work, carrying a chip on his shoulder after a career that's seen plenty of ups and downs. "I've been really pleased with just his mindset and seeing his confidence of what we're asking him to do," Norvell said of the Auburn transfer. "Seeing his confidence in what he knows he can do and how that's really spread throughout just our football team. You can talk about an individual, you can say, 'Hey, I think he's going to be this, I think he's going to be that' to a team, to guys in a locker room, but when he shows up and he goes and he does it. That's where it becomes his. He is a tremendous leader in pouring in and building those relationships and then his performance throughout what he was able to do through spring, through the winter workouts building up to it, and then obviously what he's done throughout the summer. He definitely has the right edge and the things that I want to see from him, and really all players on our team, just to go prove and show all of who they are. He doesn't need to come and work to be anything different, but I truly believe if he'll just continue to grow, he's going to put himself in a position to have a tremendous year." The head coach spoke on the trenches on both sides of the ball, first talking about the difference in the cohesiveness of the offensive line in contrast to last season. "Going into this, this fall camp, I feel a lot better now than where maybe I felt a year ago just within the cohesiveness of a group because of the reps," Norvell said. "I think going into last year, Luke might have been one of the few guys that actually had a full spring of work and we had all those guys that came in as well as the guys that were returning. You've seen the 15 practices, how they were able to really just merge together in the communication, understanding the techniques and some of the finer details of what Coach Hand and what this offense is going to ask of them. I thought they did a really nice job in that, and then you carry that into the summer where even though you're not getting to go against somebody, you're still, it's the technique, the fundamentals, making sure that the efficiency of how we operate, what we do, probably a greater grasp of understanding what the play calls and the different options, but now we got a month of just continuing to clean that up. The execution when you're facing a variety of different looks when you whenever you have to make those snap decisions, and that's what fall camp's going to continue to build upon." On the defensive line, he said he's excited about the "fast, explosive, powerful" talent in the room. "This would be a group that we want to attack," he said. "We want to be able to create disruption up front. We feel like we've got a really good group of guys that not only can penetrate but also have the playmaking ability to enforce that on the opposing line of scrimmage. It really fits well and the versatility of where guys can line up, what they can do, and the things that Tony's going to be able to do with them is going to be a, is going to be a really good, a really good fit for this defense." Lopez and Carter had major springs, setting them up for the chance to earn playing time this season, with Norvell saying just how much time will be determined by their continued growth. "These are guys that have potential and ability, they are steadily learning, continuing to, to put in, they are, they are on the fast track to be able to play," Norvell said. "Just how much that is goes down to, comes down to, their continued growth over the next month." As for the health of the team heading into fall, he said wide receiver Jayvan Boggs and linebacker Mikai Gbayor are still working back toward full participation, while true freshman Izayia Williams is fully cleared. Defensive lineman Jordan Sanders, who also missed spring work, will be available without restriction, and defensive lineman Cam Brooks is expected back this season but will be limited early in the year. Norvell, asked about the potential changes to the eligibility process that would give players five years to play five seasons, said the program is already factoring it into decisions, most specifically lowering the hesitation on putting young players on the field without the burning of a redshirt looming over the decision to do so. "It's going to help so much with the roster, as the rosters have trimmed," he said. "Now all of a sudden, we're looking at a young man that he might only play four games or you only, maybe it's not in a position where, hey, playing them in a fifth game and really not have an opportunity for another year could be extremely costly. Well, now having, knowing that you can go and you have that year, as you put yourself in position to go help impact this team, well, you're going to get your opportunity." Later in the same answer, Norvell said he is not approaching this season with a four-game framework in mind. "Guys, you go get ready to play and you put yourself in that position and, definitely, whatever point in the year that the moment calls for, the guy just has to go be ready," he said. Florida State head coach Mike Norvell joins to discuss the Seminoles' outlook heading into the season after a difficult year. Norvell reflects on the lessons learned from last season's struggles, why he believes the team can grow from those experiences, and the mindset of players determined to turn things around in Tallahassee. He also talks about newcomers like Deuce Robinson, the versatility of this year's roster, and the challenges of navigating Florida State's upcoming schedule.
On a special road trip edition of Seminole Sidelines, Osceola editor Bob Ferrante talks on the drive back to Tallahassee about the ACC Kickoff interviews with Duce Robinson, Ashton Daniels, Ja'Bril Rawls and Mike Norvell. Bob offers a storyline for each player, expands on the theme of leadership as part of Norvell's interview and discusses what Jim Phillips said about legislation in Washington as well as the importance of Friday night games in the ACC. Seminole Sidelines is sponsored by Alumni Hall and Grassroots Coffee.
Nick and Tim break down Mike Norvell's response when asked about his job security and debate whether the Florida State head coach is truly on the hot seat. Nick believes FSU's massive $51 million buyout makes a firing unlikely, while Tim argues poor recruiting classes and high expectations in Tallahassee make Norvell's seat much hotter than people think.
Chris Nee and Kolby Crawford recap the first day of ACC Kickoff, which included Jim Phillips' annual press conference and availabilities for Mike Norvell and players. Tonight on Garnet & Old, Vince and Ryan go full C-SPAN After Dark — but with more spear plants and more yellingWe open with the biggest college athletics story of the week: the Protect College Sports Act of 2026 advanced out of the Senate Commerce Committee by a 19–9 vote and now heads to the full Senate. The bill would create national rules for NIL, athlete protections, transfer/eligibility structure, and the future of college sports revenue — including a media-rights angle that matters a lot to schools like Florida State trying to survive the growing SEC/Big Ten money gap. The committee says the bill is backed by a broad group of schools, conferences, leagues, and Olympic-sport advocates, while Chairman Ted Cruz framed it as a “fourth-down” moment for college athletics. Then we shift to the trail, where FSU recruiting is moving faster than Ryan's emotional stability after one practice clip. Sam LeJeune committed, Marquis Fennell hit decision day, CJ Ohuabunwa reportedly surged after an “amazing” visit, and Jemari Foreman's OV had the staff fighting off a late Louisville push. The big question: in the NIL era, is Norvell's staff changing the calendar by pushing early pledges instead of saving everything for the old-school closing pitch? LeJeune's commitment gives FSU a blue-chip defensive line win in the 2027 class, with the next challenge being the modern recruiting boss battle: holding on until Signing Day.

E101: Answering The Call with Rev. Dr. Norvel Goff, Sr.In this episode of The Institute of Black Imagination, host Dario Calmese sits down with Rev. Dr. Norvel Goff, Sr., pastor, civic leader, and former interim pastor of Mother Emanuel AME Church following the tragic massacre of the Emanuel Nine. From his upbringing in Georgetown, South Carolina, during the Jim Crow era to his leadership within the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. Goff reflects on a life devoted to faith, service, justice, and community building. He shares lessons from his journey through ministry, civil rights advocacy, and public leadership, offering a powerful meditation on what it means to serve others, create meaningful change, and imagine a more just future.Together, Dario and Rev. Goff explores leadership, the role of the Black church, intergenerational wisdom, community organizing, healing after tragedy, and the importance of creating a table where everyone has a seat.Key TakeawaysService Is the Highest Form of LeadershipRev. Goff believes leadership begins with serving others. Goff reminds us that meaningful progress requires collaboration across generations, backgrounds, and institutions.Leadership Begins with ListeningRev. The Florida State Seminoles hierarchy needs specialized and well-advised plans for its football program to win big; firing Mike Norvell shall not be enough. Further, at least one massive step must be undertaken prior to Norvell's ouster. It's a biggy defined during the show. Here are the prime steps that won't be easy either. Brian Smith defines how the administration must be in lockstep with its finances, have the praise of its media, and possess the fan and booster support that the people currently in charge should be the ones making hiring decisions prior to Norvell being jettisoned. Good luck with each of those, as the Seminoles brass is failing miserably in the public opinion polls among all three categories. Can the Seminoles administration at least begin to make headway? Smith breaks down why those are critical points, how it happens, and one massive problem that still needs ironed out. The show also calls on fans to chime in. What do you want to hear about prior to this next FSU season starting? There's nothing truly positive to discuss. Zip. None. Nada. What's on your mind? Join the chat and let your voice be heard. Check out this exciting no-holds-barred podcast discussing FSU's future. Will Norvell be canned with a well thought out plan in place to find his successor, or will FSU fall further into mediocrity because of poor management? We’re back for Part 2 of our May Q&A, which means the offseason conversation gets both bigger and weirder. We start off with College Football Playoff expansion anxiety, including the possibility of a 24-team field, the future of conference championship games, and the growing gap between the people running the sport and the fans who love it. We discuss the new marriage between Michigan State and Pat Fitzgerald, which leads us into a broader conversation about safe hires, risky hires, Transfer Portal recruiting, and what it actually means to rebuild in the modern Big Ten. We also touch on Texas, Arch Manning, Steve Sarkisian, Florida State, Mike Norvell, and the kinds of expectations that can turn a normal season into a referendum. We also spend some time on the quarterback and offensive coordinator pairings we’re most curious to watch, with stops at places like Georgia Tech, UCLA, Florida, Kentucky, and a few others. Which combinations are actually exciting? Which ones feel volatile? Which ones have the widest range of possible outcomes? And because it’s an offseason Q&A, we find room for the important stuff: wearing your team’s gear when things are bleak, whether video podcasts have raised the appearance bar, and Dan’s surprisingly spicy take on wearing sneakers with suits. Miami Hurricanes surge ahead in recruiting as Mario Cristobal locks down elite South Florida talent.
