The Detective by Matthew Reilly: Matt Reilly is well known for the thrillers he's been writing for many years now, but this one is quite a departure. It's based in the American South and is the story of many women going missing over a period of 150 years, starting back in 1877….and the investigators looking for them all also disappeared. It's set in the nexus of Louisiana and Texas, where a quirky private detective gets the bit between his teeth and is determined to get to the bottom of it, and it has all the hallmarks of the area – wealthy family dynasties, racism, bayous and alligators and high stakes adventure. The Breath of the Gods by Simon Winchester. A remarkable exploration of our atmosphere, and the role played in our lives by wind – which can be both benign and malevolent. It's a fascinating story told through history, literature, science, poetry and engineering – and includes a piece on our own Wahine disaster. Simon Winchester has an ability to make the everyday and apparently mundane, extraordinary. It's a wonderful book. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tyla Reese Mane's journey to the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team unfolds like a perfect sports movie – complete with unexpected twists, heartbreaking setbacks, and triumphant homecomings.Growing up as the daughter of comedian James Mane, Tyla defied gender norms from the start. Not content with just playing soccer and volleyball, she became her high school's football kicker while her father coached the team. "When I first did it, I was kind of joking around," she admits. But after blasting a 40-yard kick in her first scrimmage, everyone realized she wasn't just some girl trying to prove a point – she was the real deal. What truly touched her heart wasn't just playing, but seeing young girls approach her with admiration: "That's so cool that you play football." Through this experience, Tyler became a living example that girls aren't "only subjected to just this box of things."Despite her multi-sport background, volleyball eventually captured her heart, offering a supportive environment unlike the critical atmospheres she experienced in other sports. But with limited club experience and COVID disrupting recruitment opportunities, her path to college volleyball wasn't straightforward. She accepted a full scholarship to a junior college in Casper, Wyoming – a place so unfamiliar she had to Google "10 facts about Wyoming" before deciding. The Wyoming chapter brought challenges – harsh weather, limited playing time, seasonal depression, and a volleyball culture focused on offensive power rather than the defensive mindset she knew from Hawaii. "It was definitely a difficult time in my life," she reflects, "but an experience that I needed to go through."Through persistence, additional training, and supportive connections, Tyla eventually received the opportunity she'd dreamed of – a chance to try out for the University of Hawaii volleyball team. When offered a walk-on position with the Rainbow Wahine, she could barely maintain her composure. "I was sitting there trying to have a straight face," she recalls, while "little Tyla was freaking out" inside. For aspiring athletes, Tyla's advice is powerful: prioritize academics, utilize your support system, and most importantly, ask yourself: "What extra are you doing that other people aren't doing?" As her father taught her, "You're doing this while these other girls are sleeping."Want to follow Tyler's final season with the Rainbow Wahine? Find her on Instagram at @tylareesekmane and watch her continue to break barriers and inspire the next generation.

It's sexy episode 6 of Four Weddings & a Funeral and we finally have a wedding! Guess who is getting married (in case you couldn't tell from our episode image) it's Craig & Zara! The formerly estranged couple is tying the knot, throwing the tackiest wedding in all of Great Britain and We. Are. Here. For. It! In this episode we discuss: why you don't cast Idris Elba as your best man, what your wedding would look like if you married Willy Wonka, and why your wedding cocktail shouldn't be Khalua and tomato juice. And if that's not incentive enough we hear Corinne give the 'lamest' yeah you've ever heard. But it's the only 'lame' thing in this episode so we hope you RSVP to attend episode 6, because we'd love to take you as our +1 to Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Some people think it's weird when they hear travel by sea described as romantic. Between the vomiting and the contusions and the lacerations and the spinal injuries – I'm confident this episode will help you discover whatever the opposite of romance is. On this episode: you'll learn why Captain James Cook left Hawaii with a knife in his head – and chest – and back and abdomen and face; you'll learn the clothes-eating, skin-ripping, skull-flattening results of jumping feet first into an active hurricane; and you'll hear about recovery efforts somehow more damaging than the original disaster And if you were a Patreon supporter, you would also enjoy an additional 10 minutes where we discussed:• why in about 600,000 years New Zealand will be some of the most prized real estate in the world• we clarify why a corpse in a captain's outfit isn't a must-have after every disaster• you get a sad reminder that not all ship crews are created equal• you hear all about the Marmite Disaster of 2011 that killed over 20,000 people and injured another 8,300• and you'll learn of the horrific tale of the worst, most sea-sickening voyage of all time.Full disclosure, we'll make a little bit of fun of Australia in this episode, but less than a minute's worth, I swear. And it's all in good fun. In fact, it's the only real fun to be had. I did this episode as a thank you to a listener from New Zealand, not having been there, and based purely off having read more individual rescue tales for the story than any other episode of this show to date, I have to say this. My first exposure to NZ culture was through a movie called Once Were Warriors. I'll discuss it quickly in the episode, but it basically painted the country as an urban living hellscape of social problems. My takeaway from preparing this episode is that New Zealanders are warm, caring, brave and selfless. It was a pleasure to put together, and we'll be back. Celebrity guest stars include: filmmaker and hobbit enthusiast, Peter Jackson; knife-wound collector and world traveller, Captain James Cook; extratropical cyclone and buzzkill, Cyclone Giselle; sea-sickness pioneer and turtle collector, Charles Darwin; and aquatic-themed Diety and pro-nudist, Poseidon. All that said, I am giving away a jar of Marmite to one lucky listener.
