Sporting Kansas City announced this week that former goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen is a Sporting Legend and will be honored as such at a game next month. The team has a current player who is playing like a legend lately. And SKC striker Alan Pulido is on an amazing run. In the past two games, he’s scored three goals, assisted on another and had something to do with the other two. Sporting won both matches. In this episode of the daily SportsBeat KC podcast, Aly Trost of WHB 810 a.m., and Shaun Goodwin, who covers soccer for The Star, break down Pulido, Sporting KC and KC NWSL, which continues to seek its first victory but is looking sharp so far. Jimmy Nielsen went out a winner. When Real Salt Lake's Lovel Palmer's shot hit the cross bar above Nielsen's head, he and his Sporting Kansas City teammates claimed the franchise's second MLS Cup and the city's first championship of any kind in nearly 30 years. Nielsen retired after that match. While most athletes will tell you that they tune out the crowd and the elements, Nielsen admits the crowd kept him motivated in the coldest MLS Cup final in history.

A new year and a new season of the Shades of Blue Soccer Show! That's right, they have yet to kick us out of the studio. And we are starting this year off with a bang as club legend Jimmy Nielsen joins Cody, Robert, and Thad for a very long show. The White Puma was rather candied as he spoke about his youth career all the way up to his coaching career. He and his family have come back to KC after a brief stint as the head coach of Hartford Athletic, where he was far from happy. He shared some wonderfully kind words about Kansas City that will warm the heart of any native. The Cauldron, of course, gave him fond memories that we all enjoyed revisiting. For the league and club's 25th anniversary season, we will be having on several former players and staff all season long to take a look back through the years. We asked Nielsen his thoughts on the progression of Sporting Kansas City and Major League Soccer as a whole. He had some hilarious stories to tell about shenanigans of old teammates like Casey Keller, Kei Kamara, and even an Aurélien Collin hangover at training. We also hit him with rapid fire questions like his most hated MLS player, best friend, funniest teammate, and worst game he can remember. His coaching mind was also put to the test in naming his Sporting KC All-Decade team. Hear him describe the fateful 2013 MLS Cup Final in which he played 120 minutes then won in PK's with a broken rib. "I was in pain. I couldn't get out of bed. I could not sit on the toilet. But I didn't want to miss that one," the puma explains. "I took injections and tried everything. I had a shot in my ass, I had shots directly into my ribs, everything!" This man is an absolute legend. Yet somehow not an official Sporting Legend. What exactly are they waiting for? Sit back, relax, and enjoy a deep dive into the good ol' days! Plus, reaction to Canada's big match against Mexico in Vancouver. In the second segment, there is good news for US fans after the U-23 squad earned a 1-1 draw down in Colombia in their Olympic playoff. How did they get it done? The United States’ double dip with Guatemala could help seal a spot in the Hex, and forward Bobby Wood joins the guys to talk about his career resurgence with Union Berlin, those pesky transfer rumors and his advice for young players looking to make the European jump. Plus, can Canada pull an upset against Mexico at home? Will the US U-23s do the business in Colombia with a place in the Olympics on the line? While MLS takes a breath, USL is getting ready to get after it. Opening day is Friday, and Oklahoma City Energy FC head coach (and Sporting KC legend) Jimmy Nielsen gives the lowdown on the league and his new status as a Midwesterner. In the mailbag, Calen Carr joins to give a player’s perspective on the unwritten rules of the game, a father and his daughters are welcomed into the Galaxy family and RapidMan gets the fan fiction treatment.
A winless weekend for the Whitecaps, but fear not, the AFTN podcast is here to try and take your mind off things. Although talking about the things probably doesn't quite do that. Hmmm. We're joined by guest Harjeet Johal for most of this episode, to look over the loss to Seattle Sounders and look ahead to this Wednesday Canadian Championship semi-final second leg at FC Edmonton. What went wrong and can Robbo turn things around quickly? How strong a team will take the pitch at Clarke Field? Was the 'Caps early season success a true indication of the team or inflated? We hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Seattle's Sigi Schmid, along with audio from the victorious Sounders locker room as we chat with goalscorer Chad Barrett and the central defensive pairing of Brad Evans and Chad Marshall. And we have a couple of MLS veteran goalkeeping guests on this episode as well. First up, former Sounders keeper and current colour guy Kasey Keller talks a little bit about the weekend's match and then former Sporting KC keeper Jimmy Nielsen talks to us about getting in to coaching in Oklahoma and shares his thoughts on his fellow Dane, David Ousted. And there's still time to look at WFC2's 2-2 draw with OKC Energy in USL action and chat with coach Alan Koch. Have a listen!
