Peter Conover Hains was born before the Civil War and still wore a U.S. Army uniform in World War I. He fired one of the Civil War's first naval shots, built ports and canals, and returned to active duty at age 77. His legacy spans over half a century of American warfare — and four generations of service. This Memorial Day, we're telling the story of the soldier who bridged two centuries. In this episode, we talk about his incredible career and then chat with Comedian and Educator, Joe Janes. In this episode, I speak with playwright Joe Janes about the craft of sketch and stand-up comedy. We cover a lot of turf including academia in playwriting, character and the four basic human wants, improvisation and playwriting, the rules of sketch, lacking humor in sketch and whether sketches have to be funny. We also touch base finding opportunities and self-producing (a common theme lately), letting go of the reins, bad habits and the benefits of reading your work out loud. There's so much we cover in this episode, it might behoove you to listen to it multiple times, or at least take notes. I learned so much in this episode. I hope you walk away with so much more. Joe Janes is an Emmy Award winning writer and teaches comedy writing and improvisation at The Second City and Columbia College in Chicago. He has published three books of his staged work - 365 Sketches, 50 Plays, and Seven Deadly Plays. His full-length plays include Metaluna and the Science of the Mind Revue, A Hard Day's Journey Into Night, Our Christian Nation, The Incident, and Always Never. He served as the artistic director of Robot vs. Dinosaur which created the beach blanket musical - Attack At Bikini Werewolf Beach, Part 2.To view the video version of this episode, please copy and paste the link below -https://youtu.be/0zjVXMTu-9YLinks and resources mentioned in this episode -Lulu self-publishing -https://www.lulu.comhttps://www.writeshare.orgWebsites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

Anywhere I Lay My Head - Daniel Kerr-Hobert The original intention of Jughead's Basement was not to conduct interviews of band members, but only to spotlight some of my favorite writers writing about some of my favorite records. But that quickly veered towards having a few interviews since I enjoy having conversations about music and creativity. I now like the balance of both interviews and writers. I had scheduled Tom Wait's Rain Dogs before seeking interviews became a facet. Instead I gathered together the best of my favorite writers, and they shared their stories and thoughts on one of the best singer/songwriters of the last few decades: Tom Waits. I did try to get an interview with him, but with no success. Really it was a pipe dream, a quixotic challenge I gave myself. I do plan on continuing my effort to get an interview with him, which I would instantly sprinkle on top of this podcast. But until then this single podcast represents the purity of my original idea. http://www.johnjugheadpierson.com/ http://www.tuesdaynighthoot.com/
