University of Washington collaborates on study using AI to reduce political polarization on social media

By many measures, political polarization in the U.S. has grown in recent years. It’s reflected in recent surveys which show record high numbers of Americans who identify as conservative or liberal, or the stark differences between Republicans’ and Democrats’ current feelings toward the federal government.     Social media can exacerbate this polarization, especially when algorithms social media companies use feed content that not only aligns with a user’s political views but also attacks the opposing party’s candidates or values. But what if you could bypass that algorithm to make posts that expressed partisan animosity or antidemocratic content less prominent?     Martin Saveski is an assistant professor in the University of Washington’s School of Information who recently explored these questions with researchers at Stanford University and Northeastern University. The scientists developed a tool that used AI to quickly scan social media posts that contained antidemocratic views or political animus, such as support for jailing political opponents. Saveski and his team used this tool in a study with Republicans and Democrats that reordered the participants’ feeds on the social media site X so that antidemocratic or politically hostile content appeared higher or lower on their feeds for seven days during last year’s U.S. presidential election.    Saveski joins us to share the study’s results and the implications of giving users greater control over their social media algorithms.

He joins us to discuss his findings.

The Demond Williams situation is everything that is wrong with college football and people are rightfully angry about it. Not only did Williams sign a revenue-sharing deal with UW just days ago, but he announced he was leaving while his teammates and coaches were at a memorial service. Why are people shocked that the NFL is less corrupt than college football? That's not new. :30- The Baltimore Ravens have parted ways with John Harbaugh and he's already in high demand as seven teams have reportedly contacted him already. It seems like he will have his pick of his next destination. Meanwhile, Seahawks OC, Klint Kubiak also seems to be a hot commodity and he's spent the week interviewing. :45- Who is to blame for the current state of college football? When we look at the night sky, we can see the moon, stars, planets and sometimes even faraway clouds of gas and dust. All that visible matter — the stuff we can see — has a gravitational force, the same way the moon pulls on our oceans and creates the tides. But for decades, physicists have noticed something weird: There’s more gravity in the universe than we should expect. Why?   Physicists think the answer lies with dark matter, an invisible form of matter that accounts for that extra gravity they're observing. University of Washington physicist Alvaro Chavarria helped build a dark matter detector deep below the French Alps. Chavarria joins us to help demystify dark matter, how the detector works and its potential applications.

Every business leader talks about culture — what it means, how to build it, how to protect it. It's one of the most important aspects of running any successful organization. And though Nordstrom is a retailer, the fundamentals of culture-building that apply to our business can actually be found in all kinds of seemingly unrelated industries. For our host, Pete Nordstrom, one of the clearest and most inspiring examples of that has always been sports. Himself a former player and coach for the Men's Basketball Junior Varsity team at the University of Washington — The themes of competition, preparation, and team building continue to serve him today, and will feel familiar to anyone who's ever been charged with motivating a group of people toward a singular purpose. Whether that's people on a sales floor… or players on a basketball court. So in that spirit, we're taking the Nordy Pod on a little trip to the University of Washington's men's basketball facility to gain a few leadership insights from the Head Coach of the Men's Basketball team, Danny Sprinkle. This life-long Huskies fan has loads of experience coaching for Montana State, Utah State, and now UW, and the cross-over application for our business leaves no room for want. Go Dogs! Thanks for tuning in to episode 99. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. A new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association lays out a range of evidence-based initiatives to reduce firearms deaths in the U.S. by 2040. The article comes out of a large interdisciplinary conference earlier this year that was chaired by researcher Fred Rivara, pediatrics professor in the University of Washington’s Medical School. He says professionals in the fields of public health, criminology, public policy and gun manufacturing discussed what has worked all over the country to bring gun deaths down. He says the idea was not to do away with guns or the Second Amendment, but to encourage the wider implementation of policies that have already been proven effective — and use emerging technologies — to reduce deaths. Rivara joins us to tell us more about the research into gun violence as a public health crisis, and what he hopes policy makers and the general public take from it.

Emissions from economic growth undermine international progress on climate change, University of Washington study says

A decade ago, nearly every country in the world adopted the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the rise in global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius by 2100. Member nations are required under the legally binding treaty to submit every five years their climate action plans, or Nationally Determined Contributions, that detail the voluntary actions they commit to take to cut their carbon emissions.    The treaty couldn’t have come at a more urgent time. Last year was Earth’s hottest year on record, including the first year to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-Industrial levels. Still, the Paris Agreement has allowed countries to make some modest progress on cutting emissions and slowing the arrival of the 2 degrees Celsius tipping point that experts warn could trigger irreversible and catastrophic climate change impacts.  But a new study led by the University of Washington found that those carbon-cutting gains are not great enough to offset the environmental costs of global economic growth, which has risen sharply over the past decade. The study also projects how Pres. Trump’s decision to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement for a second time may affect the collective, international effort to fight climate change. Adrian Raftery, a professor emeritus of statistics and sociology at University of Washington, joins us for more details.

Unforgiving coastlines, powerful currents, unpredictable weather, and features such as the notorious Columbia River bar have resulted in more than two thousand shipwrecks, earning the coastal areas of Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver Island the moniker “Graveyard of the Pacific.” Beginning with a Spanish galleon that came ashore in northern Oregon in 1693 and continuing into the recent past, Wrecked: Unsettling Histories from the Graveyard of the Pacific (University of Washington Press, 2025) by Dr. Coll Thrush includes stories of many vessels that met their fate along the rugged coast and the meanings made of these events by both Indigenous and settler survivors and observers.Commemorated in museums, historical markers, folklore, place-names, and the remains of the ships themselves, the shipwrecks have created a rich archive. Whether in the form of a fur-trading schooner that was destroyed in 1811, a passenger liner lost in 1906, or an almost-empty tanker broken on the shore in 1999, shipwrecks on the Northwest Coast opens up conversations about colonialism and Indigenous persistence. Dr. Thrush's retelling of shipwreck tales highlights the ways in which the three central myths of settler colonialism—the disappearance of Indigenous people, the control of an endlessly abundant nature, and the idea that the past would stay past—proved to be untrue. As a critical cultural history of this iconic element of the region, Wrecked demonstrates how the history of shipwrecks reveals the fraught and unfinished business of colonization on the Northwest Coast. For about 10 years, researchers at the University of Washington’s Personal Robotics Lab have been developing a robotic arm that can help people with motor impairments, such as quadriplegics, feed themselves. That’s a task they may rely on human caregivers to do. The Assistive Dexterous Arm can be mounted onto a surface such as a power wheelchair or hospital table. With vision and touch sensors, ADA can determine how to best grasp and maneuver a bite of chicken or watermelon, for example, toward a user’s mouth.  The lived experiences of people with disabilities are often ignored in the development of new technologies that could benefit them, according to Amal Nanavati, a recent PhD graduate from the UW’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. But that isn’t the case with the ADA project. Dozens of people with motor impairments have provided feedback and guidance on it over the years, and some have even taken on the role of “community researchers” working alongside the UW robotics team.  Jonathan Ko is a Seattle-based patent attorney and ADA community researcher who brought the device home to feed himself meals for a week. He and Nanavati are authors on a recently published paper describing this real-world testing of the technology. They join us to talk about what they learned and share their thoughts on the future of robot-assisted caregiving.

Whether it’s smartphones or sneakers, toys or tents, about 80% of commercial goods are transported to markets around the world using giant container ships. As global shipping routes grow to meet increasing demand, so too does the likelihood of fatal collisions with whale species whose ranges overlap with them.  Researchers at the University of Washington led a team of international scientists who measured, for the first time, the risk of ship strikes worldwide among humpback, blue, fin and sperm whales. They found that 92% of global shipping traffic overlaps with the habitats of these whales. Meanwhile, only 7% of the hotspots in the world’s oceans where the risk of collisions between whales and ships is greatest have any measures in place to protect the marine mammals.  Anna Nisi is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington’s Center for Ecosystem Sentinels, and the lead author of the recently published paper. She joins us to share her findings and what might be done to protect whales threatened by the multi-billion dollar shipping industry.

But anything that you want to do you have to work for, it's not going to be just given to you. Some people are outliers where it is, but we don't live in an outlier society where 90% of that is happening. So think about your dream, the purpose behind your dream, know that there's going to be order behind that dream in order for you to really commit to it. Once you commit to it, there's gonna be a lot of white noise around you. But you have to learn how to treat that as surface level things and aim high. Gus reminded them of The C.O.W.S.'s #WhiteGuestOnly policy. However, we did hear from Dr. Pittman earlier this year during the celebration of Dorothy Roberts's years of superb attempted counter-racist scholarship. Dr. Pittman was a part of a panel discussion that included Professor Roberts - the audio is in the archives. Gus saw advertisements for the coming celebration for the paperback publication of Dr. Pittman's important work on black grandmothers who serve as the primary caregiver for the their black grandchildren. She details the numerous ways the System of White Supremacy "coerces" these grandmothers into becoming guardians - even though they lack the legal status as a "parent." This talk featured 2 Suspected Racists alongside Dr. Pittman, and it would have been three, but one White female called out sick. The Gus felt the usual black misandry of the academy. However, Dr. Pittman twice made time to personally acknowledge and thank Gus for attending. Most of the people in attendance were classified as White. Professor Robinson, black male, provided a wealth of constructive information on the counter-racist efforts of Seattle's black college students in the late 1960's. He made sure to include the COINTELPRO snooping that the FBI conducted on the UW's Black Student Union as soon as the group came into existence - which was in 1968. Robinson emphasized that the founding BSU members reached out to and stressed the importance of non-black, non-white students. Gus asked and received no information about non-white, non-black students making a similar effort to reach out to black students. We were also forced to endure a White Woman's query about the alleged sexism of the black males who founded the BSU. This reminded Gus that the BSU has been dominated by black females for about a quarter century and around 2007 (when Obama was fixing to be elected) their signature event was the beloved "Bachelor Auction." #BlackMisandry #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The University of Washington has one of the largest anti-Israel encampments in America. In his appearance there, Charlie explains that one of the best ways to view the Israel/Gaza conflict is simply to ask: Which side's supporters champion civilization, and which side has everyone who wants to tear civilization down? Charlie also answers questions about what made America great, why it's okay to support Trump even if he's a sinner, whether being pro-LGBT helps or hurts countries, and more.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
