What are the ethical responsibilities of designers today and what long-term impacts do they need to consider as they design? Who does the label of ‘designer' actually apply to?Scott Doorley and Carissa Carter are designers, writers, and educators. Scott is the Creative Director and Carissa is the Academic Director and an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University's d.school. They are also co-authors of the new book Assembling Tomorrow: A Guide to Designing a Thriving Future from the Stanford d.school.Greg, Scott, and Carissa discuss the evolution and impact of design thinking, the pervasive nature of design in today's world, and the importance of being intentional with design choices. They also highlight key concepts from their book such as the significance of noticing unintended consequences, embracing awkwardness, and understanding the role of constraints in the design process. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Stanford D.SchoolNeedfinding for Wicked ProblemsMarc AndreessenUnSILOed Episode 03: Charles O'Reilly IIIGuest Profile:Scott Doorley Stanford D. If you get it so-called right, something's going to change outside of you that's going to render it not effectual, in some matter of time. Or you're going to get that right, but you're going to miss something else. I was talking to a guy who teaches here, and he teaches entrepreneurs, and he was saying, “You're going to fail somewhere. It might be at your business, it might be at your family, it might be at your health, but if you're really trying to do something hard, there's going to be failure.” So you just have to get used to it, acknowledge it, and then work with it. You've got to accept it as part of the design because it is.We are all designers03:34:[Carissa Carter] Whether you are a person that designs things, systems, or technologies, whether or not you call yourself a designer in your job title, if you are a part of making things and bringing them into the world, that's design work, and it's really important to pay attention to that.Navigating design in a world of constraints42:03: [Scott Doorley] The idea of transcending constraints is appealing, but what designers are doing is shifting the realm of what they're saying—no, these are the constraints that matter; this other one that we thought mattered doesn't matter. And they're really just hell-bent on figuring out: what is the set of constraints that work?Embedding vision into everyday actions42:03: [Scott Doorley] This ability to go big and go detailed can't be overstated because that's where things start to feel congruent, right? If I say, "Oh, my organization believes in X," but that's not coming through in the way someone's greeted when they come to the door, it's just going to feel off, and it just doesn't feel right. It just doesn't feel good. So that ability to be like, "Okay, not only are we going to have a vision, but we're going to embed it in the day-to-day that we do." You could think of that as parenting. That's sort of how a teacher sets up a classroom. That's clearly how a leader should lead an organization, in my opinion, because then you don't have to talk about the values—they're there. It's a hard thing to do. Frankly, sometimes I'd feel like we're on it. Sometimes I feel like we're missing the mark. It's not a static thing. You have to keep iterating and keep responding to what's going on.
It's not uncommon to feel stuck, like you're just going through the motions, especially when life becomes routine or overwhelming. That feeling of quiet desperation can be a sign that something needs to change, whether it's in your personal life, work, or mindset. Breaking free and living on your own terms often starts with small, intentional choices—whether it's setting boundaries, exploring new passions, or simply giving yourself permission to pursue what truly makes you happy. It's all about creating a life that feels more aligned with who you are and what you value. Abel James Bascon is a valedictorian and Ivy League graduate turned entrepreneur, musician, and health advocate. In his journey of personal growth, he emphasizes personal responsibility, embracing change, and maintaining integrity. Today, Abel shares insights on navigating the health and fitness industry, the impact of technology and AI, and balancing financial sustainability with personal fulfillment. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “You can't give kids advice right now about what they're going to be when they grow up. We can't envision the future that's ahead of us—it's just too unpredictable. It's changing too quickly for us to know.” – Abel James Bascon “The algorithm isn't favoring real people doing real work and saying real things right now. So it's really up to us to spread these messages within our own networks and groups, and hopefully, turn people on to others who are doing good work.” – Abel James Bascon “Podcasting is a life sentence, though; it's a lot of work. However, the rewards are real, and they're usually not monetary. It's more about making a difference in people's lives.” – Abel James Bascon “Let's make good humans who are able to adapt, who are able to learn and get on board with self-learning, and who can unlearn certain things because they become no longer relevant, whether to the individual or to society in general.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Embrace a growth mindset and be open to new possibilities, even if they don't fit the traditional path. Unlearn what is no longer relevant and adapt to the rapidly changing world. Focus on becoming a "good human" rather than just pursuing predetermined goals. Cultivate skills like self-learning, curiosity, and the ability to break free from limiting habits or thoughts. Spread the messages of people doing meaningful, impactful work in health, wellness, and other important areas. Don't rely on algorithms to surface this content - actively share it within your own networks. When traveling for work, prioritize high-quality protein sources and avoid sugary, processed foods. Plan ahead and bring portable, healthy options to maintain a balanced diet on the road. Recognize that change needs to happen both from the bottom-up (individual choices) and the top-down (policy, regulation). Educate yourself and others on the difference between real, whole foods and industrialized products. Conclusion: Personal responsibility, adaptability, and authenticity are essential in successfully navigating life's challenges. By owning our actions, being open to change, and staying true to ourselves, we can approach difficult situations with confidence and resilience. These qualities not only help us overcome obstacles but also allow for personal growth along the way. Embracing these traits leads to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Planet Called Home [Song by Holly Near]… Can you call on your imaginationAs if telling a myth to a childPut in the fantastical, wonderful, magicalAdd the romantic, the brave and the wild… Once upon a time there was a powerSo great that no one could know its namePeople tried to change it and rule with itBut always such arrogance ended in shame.… Thousands of years would pass in a momentHundreds of cultures would come and goEach generation with a glorious callingEven when they were too busy to know… And then one day after two millenniaWhich after all was a small part of timeHundreds of souls found their way out of nowhereTo be on earth at the threat of decline… Let's all go, they moved as one beingEven though each would arrive here aloneThey promised to work in grace with each otherTo brave the beautiful planet called home… Now, there was no promise that they could save itBut how exciting to give it a tryIf each one did just one thing beautifullyComplex life on Earth might not die… And so they arrived in a spectrum of colorsThe population on earth did explodeSome threw themselves in front of disasterAnd others slowly carried their load… Some adopted small girls from ChinaSome lived high in the branches of treesSome died as martyrs, some lived as healersAnd, some bravely walked with a dreadful disease… They mingled among each class and each cultureNot one of them could be identifiedBut together they altered just enough momentsTo help the lost and the terrified… To step outside of our egos and bodiesTo know for once that we truly are oneThen quickly we would forget to rememberBut that's okay, their job was well done… And earth went on for another millenniumNow its time for this song to endThis magical story of hope and wonderInvites you all to wake up and pretend to be… Fabulous creatures sent from the powerSouls that have come with one purpose in mindTo do one thing that will alter the outcomeAnd maybe together we can do it in time… Can you call on your imaginationAs if telling a myth to a childPut in the fantastical, wonderful, magicalAdd the romantic, the brave and the wildThe souls are comin backThe souls are comin backThe souls are comin back! You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane on as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. In this episode, Avetis Antaplyan interviews Gail Casper, a two-time TED speaker and sales expert. They discuss Gail's journey in sales, the importance of customization in sales training, and the challenges of selling in different industries. They also talk about the role of networking and referrals in sales, the systematic attitude development technique, and the key qualities to look for when hiring sales professionals. Gail Casper discusses her experience as a semi-finalist on The Apprentice and the lessons she learned from the process. She emphasizes the importance of thinking quickly on your feet and fighting for yourself in competitive situations. Gail also shares how her experience in media, including having her own show and contributing to Success Magazine, has contributed to her sales career as a trainer. She talks about her new book, 'Sell Like a Cockatoo,' which focuses on mastering the new way of selling in a rapidly changing world. Gail also discusses the impact of AI on sales and the importance of genuine rapport building in sales interactions. Takeaways Sales is often seen as a dirty word, but it actually comes from a Greek root word meaning 'to give'. Customization is key in sales training, including understanding the company, its value proposition, and the products. Networking and referrals are powerful tools in sales, and face-to-face interactions can make a big difference. The systematic attitude development technique helps sales professionals get logical in the face of emotion and overcome challenges. When hiring sales professionals, look for core competencies such as passion for the product, resilience, and a customer-centric mindset. Thinking quickly on your feet and fighting for yourself are important skills in competitive situations. Experience in media can contribute to a sales career by boosting confidence and providing opportunities for training and coaching. Genuine rapport building is crucial in sales, and salespeople should focus on understanding the customer's needs and providing value. AI may have a role in sales, but human-to-human contact and targeted, personalized approaches are still essential for success. Building an online marketplace platform is easy, but building a successful marketplace business that stands the test of time is another story. In today's episode, we get to hear from Juho Makkonen as he dives deep into the ins and outs of marketplace business models, from developing your idea into a fully functional marketplace platform to achieving balanced and sustainable business growth.About Juho Makkonen:Juho Makkonen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Sharetribe, an innovative software company. This company aims to help aspiring entrepreneurs get their marketplace businesses off the ground in the spirit of sharing economy platforms such as Airbnb, Etsy, and Fiverr. Moreover, as a co-author of "The Lean Marketplace," Juho equips aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners with indispensable insights to build successful online marketplaces, whether they are startups, cooperatives, non-profits, or established brands, offering a practical roadmap for creating sustainable and thriving businesses in the sharing economy.Visit our curated collection of Business Books for more enriching reads.Episode highlights: Not all entrepreneurs are tech-savvy coders, so it's important to make marketplace building accessible to everyone and help them turn their ideas into a reality. (02:35) Prioritizing between purpose and profits is not easy, especially in the competitive market of today. But companies like Sharetribe are still choosing to do so by democratizing the platform ownership and making a great impact. (09:40) It's very much possible to build a profitable business that serves the community, which doesn't have to be a unicorn or the next big thing, as long as it helps solve a problem. (25:30) The goal of marketplace businesses is to eliminate the middleman and bring buyers and sellers together. So, by taking care of the technology aspect of online marketplaces, we're actually democratizing platform ownership. (31:15) Building platforms is easy, but if you don't have the necessary knowledge and a strong team by your side, then it becomes much more challenging. (34:01) Juho's best advice for entrepreneurs:“I also always want to remind that it's so much more than just tech. I think that, actually, tech is probably not the most difficult part of this type of business. The most difficult part is kind of like solving the so-called chicken and egg problem, like the supply-demand conundrum, and we have lots of educational resources on that.” (34”01)Connect with Juho: Twitter LinkedIn Mastodon Resources Mentioned: Sharetribe The Lean Marketplace: A Practical Guide to Building a Successful Online Marketplace Business by Juho Makkonen and Cristóbal Gracia Holacracy: The New Management System for a Rapidly Changing World by Brian J.
