The BESS market is growing at a phenomenal pace. You would think battery management is becoming easier. The reality? It is becoming increasingly complex.  Between data risks, a growing number of suppliers, vertically disintegrated component chains, and constantly evolving software stacks, investors can quickly lose control of their battery fleets.  Only a handful of companies truly operate in the fast-maturing field of battery analytics. And we are not talking about market optimisation focused on financial returns, but deep predictive analytics: understanding what happens inside the system itself, with expertise in battery health, performance, and safety.  Laurent and Gerard have the privilege of welcoming Stefan Rohr, CEO of TWAICE, one of Germany's leading battery analytics companies.TWAICE has become a major player in recent years: more than 150 employees, including battery scientists, chemists, software engineers, and data scientists, with operations across Europe, the US, and Asia. The company has raised over €60m in equity from leading investors including Energize, Coatue, and Creandum (early investor in Spotify), alongside €25m in debt financing from the EIB.  With Stefan, we explored the new complexity of battery fleet management — all the way down to the individual cell. Why BESS is a completely different beast from solar? Why is the excellence in operations becoming the real competitive edge? How to address hardware and software sovereignty challenges? And ultimately, the 20-year question: these assets will remain on the grid for decades. You need to build the operational infrastructure for that reality today — not patch it together later.  A highly informative — and delightfully geeky — conversation about managing battery fleet complexity.

The man who helps finance Europe's defence: Robert de Groot, vice president of the European Investment Bank There is a particular kind of power that comes with someone who decides, quietly, which ideas get funded and which don't. Robert de Groot, and his team, holds that power over an extraordinary range of things: military bridges in Poland, rocket launchers in Spain, satellite-to-smartphone startups in Luxembourg, drone intelligence software in Estonia. As Vice President of the world's largest multilateral lender, the EIB sitting on the Kirchberg plateau, his brief covers security, defence, space, and innovation. It is, as he puts it with characteristic understatement, "quite a new direction" for a bank that, not long ago, wouldn't touch defence at all. That has changed. Dramatically. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EIB has rewritten its mandate, opening five distinct financing pillars across the defence and security ecosystem, from large-scale infrastructure to venture equity for startups building things that didn't exist five years ago. De Groot has spent the last two years touring every European capital, sitting down with defence, finance, and interior ministers, and asking “What does Europe actually need, and can we finance it?” "The urgency I hear in private is far greater than what you see in public." What he found on the road was a continent with a perception gap. The Baltic states are operating in a different psychological reality from much of western Europe. For Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the threat from the east is not geopolitics but geography. However, de Groot is cautiously optimistic. Germany has made a near-complete reversal on defence spending in three years. The Nordics have joined NATO. Ministers of Interior are now showing up to defence finance meetings, because the boundary between military security and civil security has dissolved. Cyber attacks, compromised energy grids, sabotaged undersea cables are happening now. The physical problems, meanwhile, are startlingly concrete. Bridges that cannot carry battle tanks. Ports unable to defend against unmanned underwater vehicles. Roads along NATO transit routes from Antwerp through Germany deep into Poland that haven't been maintained to handle today's military hardware. "It sounds absurd," de Groot says, "until you realise it's a multi-billion euro problem." The financing exists. The fixes are underway. But getting three countries to agree on a shared corridor before one of them goes its own way remains the harder challenge. For innovators and entrepreneurs building the dual-use technologies that now sit at the heart of European defence strategy, de Groot offers a map through the financing ecosystem. Early stage? Venture capital funds backed by the European Investment Fund. Series A and B? Venture debt, a product barely known in Europe five years ago, now scaling fast, with Luxembourg companies OQ Technology and Artec 3D among its beneficiaries. Series C and beyond? The European Tech Champions Initiative, designed explicitly to stop European unicorns from decamping to California. And for defence tech specifically, a new Defence Equity Facility of up to one billion euros: real, patient, European capital, with no American relocation clause attached. "The companies I meet across Europe mostly want to stay. We need to make sure the financing is there when they do." On the day of interview, a loan was signed for the Luxembourg Fire Brigade's logistics infrastructure. Security exists at multiple scales simultaneously, from orbital launch capability to the speed at which a fire engine reaches a crisis. Both matter and both require investment. Both represent the same underlying bet: that Europe, if it chooses to move with enough conviction, is more than capable of defending and financing its own future. De Groot, for his part, seems to believe it. The question, as ever, is whether the institutions can move as fast as the moment requires. Robert de Groot is Vice President of the European Investment Bank, responsible for Security, Defence, Space and Innovation Finance.

Welcome back to The Agriculture Season, our new series that explores the food on your plate, how it got there, and its global impact on the environment, social justice, and the economy. What does a can of tuna have to do with agricultural policy? More than you'd expect! Case studies like the Tuna Boycott of 1988 show how consumer demand can drive policy change. Real, meaningful, GLOBAL change. The girls argue that consumer demand for agricultural reform could beget similar results.Right now, the US and EU are experiencing parallel legislative and grassroots shifts. Both are pivotal moments for food policy. This episode explores these parallels, which begs the question: if demand requires us to move away from traditional "subsidize and produce" models and toward "climate-smart" and "fair-access" frameworks, what policies will we need to support our farmers as well as our environmental goals? Moreover, are our policymakers ready to rise to this occasion?_____________________________________________________________To stay on top of Hotel Earth 360° updates, check out our links belowSubstack: https://hotelearth360.substack.com/ Instagram: @hotelearth360TikTok: @hotelearth360Website: hotelearth360.com To receive the Hotel Earth newsletter, for environmental news, episode announcements, book club updates, and more, subscribe to our Substack: https://hotelearth360.substack.com/subscribe

So we need to act in all these areas in order to ensure peace, security, stability on our continent.” Peter Macjob speaks to Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank, about Europe's shifting priorities, and the growing urgency around defence and security. With wars, energy shocks and tariffs reshaping the global economy, Europe is being forced to rethink its position in a changing world. Trevlig lyssning!

Insights from the EIB Group Forum 2026: EIB President Nadia Calviño joins global leaders to discuss security, space, and why dignity is our best defence. The EIB Group Forum 2026, held in the heart of Luxembourg, served as a powerful reminder that Europe is no longer taking its security, energy, or democratic values for granted. Under the theme "A Strong Europe in a Changing World," a stellar lineup of speakers and an international audience explored how investment and individual action are shaping a resilient future. In this video you'll find: 00:00 Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), on the EIB's mission, European resilience, and the main levers of competitiveness. 16.40 Nikolai Coster-Waldau, Actor and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador on climate optimism, the UNDP's mission, and the strength of European unity in Greenland. 26.46 Oleksandra Matviichuk, Nobel Peace Prize Winner & Chair of the Center for Civil Liberties; on the resistance in Ukraine, the power of ordinary people, and reclaiming European values. 42.00 Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, ESA Astronaut from Poland, on the "European story," space as critical infrastructure, and the Space Tech EU funding program. The EIB: Financing the European Success Story Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), describes the institution as one of the EU's greatest success stories. By leveraging capital from Member States, the EIB transforms infrastructure, from highways and hospitals to high-risk innovative startups in the space sector. President Calviño emphasised that 2026 is the ‘year of competitiveness' focusing on market integration and simplification to help European companies remain resilient against global shocks. An Optimist's Guide to Humanity Actor and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Nikolai Coster-Waldau brought a message of hope, urging a shift away from "doom and gloom" climate communication that creates division. Through his project, An Optimist's Guide to the Planet, he explores human innovation and the common values that connect us. He emphasised that whilst the planet will survive, our focus must remain on protecting one another through unity and solidarity. Dignity as Action: The Frontline of Freedom In a deeply moving speech, Nobel laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk reminded the forum that "ordinary people can change history". Detailing the harrowing reality of the invasion in Ukraine, she argued that the collapse of the international order was preceded by an ethical crisis. For Matviichuk, the fight for Ukraine is a fight for the very idea of freedom, asserting that "dignity is action" and that Europe must move beyond being a "consumer of democracy" to becoming its fierce protector. From Outer Space to Strategic Sovereignty Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski shared his journey as a student in Łódź to the International Space Station: a path only made possible by Poland's EU accession and the Erasmus programme. He highlighted that space is not just for dreamers; it is "invisible, critical infrastructure" that synchronises power grids and stock markets. Through the €500 million Space Tech EU program, the EIB and ESA are now funding the next generation of European technological champions. https://www.undp.org/goodwill-ambassadors/nikolaj-coster-waldau https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration/Astronauts/Slawosz_Uznanski-Wisniewski https://www.nobelprize.org/events/nobel-prize-dialogue/brussels2024/panellists/oleksandra-matviichuk/#:~:text=Oleksandra%20Matviichuk%20is%20a%20human,the%202022%20Nobel%20Peace%20Prize.

With International Women's Day on 8 March, this episode explores both the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and the critical role women play in driving climate action. In this episode, James and Daisy discuss and celebrate women. How are women disproportionately affected by climate change? And why are they central to climate solutions?SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: Women Leading on Climate (WLOC) – A global coalition of women leaders. Women are 2.5x more likely to demand government climate action, twice as likely to engage civically, and 60% more likely to use their voice for good. Project Drawdown – Makes the case for recognizing family planning and girls' education as effective long-term climate adaptation strategies.Conciliation Resources (2024) – A workshop in Nigeria found women often show greater climate adaptability, partly due to exclusion from conventional inputs. Women farmers used manure fertiliser amid unpredictable weather, while men typically used harmful pesticides women cannot access.OTHER ADVOCATES AND RESOURCES:International Women's Day – 2026 theme: ‘Give To Gain'. UN – Women aged 25-34 are 25% more likely than men to live in extreme poverty.UN – Women make up the majority of the world's poor, who are highly dependent on natural resources. Women and children are 14x more likely to die than men in climate disasters. In wealthier societies, women drive 70-80% of consumer purchasing decisions.UN (2025) – One study found a 28% rise in femicide during heatwaves. UN Women – Women carry out at least 2.5x more unpaid household and care work than men.UN Women (2025) – As of September 2025, 29 countries have women Heads of State and/or Government (32 women total). FAO (2023) – Women produce 60-80% of the food in most developing countries.EIB (2023) – Countries with more women in Parliament are more prone to ratify environmental treaties. Companies with more women on boards are more likely to improve energy efficiency, reduce firms' overall environmental impact and invest in renewable energy. At COP26, men held 10 of 12 UK leadership roles. Earth Day (2025) – 62% of women are climate voters in the US (vs. 37% of men). “Greenness” is often linked with femininity. Women generally purchase eco-friendly products more frequently, consume less carbon, are more likely to recycle, minimize waste, and save more water and energy. In one study, women became more concerned climate impacts and more supportive of mitigation policies when asked to consider future generations; men experienced no such change.IRC (2023) – Climate change has been linked to a 39% surge in child marriage in Bangladesh. After disasters, 86% of girls face increased domestic workloads, affecting their studies.Hidden Connections – Documentary on climate change and child marriage in Bangladesh. LSE (2025) – Women's food and transport carbon footprint are 26% lower than men's in France. CEO Magazine (2023) – With 10 new female CEOs in the S&P 500 index, women finally outnumbered CEOs named John.Vegan Society (2025) – More women (3.60%) than men (1.89%) say they are vegan or have a plant-based diet.  Financial Alliance for Women – Non-performing loans from women are 53% lower than from men.One Earth (2025) – The Paris Agreement and its guiding principle of 'net zero emissions' was shaped by women leaders (the "lionesses") including Farhana Yamin, Christiana Figueres, and Tessa Tennant.Cara Daggett (2018) – Introduced “petro-masculinity” to describe the hypermasculine mode of support for fossil fuels in rising authoritarian movements.McKinsey (2023) - Top-quartile companies for gender diversity were 39% more likely to financially outperform. Thank you for listening! DACH venture capital in early 2026 shows selective growth-stage normalization. Capital flows favor revenue clarity, regulatory alignment, and strategic industrial positioning. Enterprise AI integrated into operational workflows, compliance SaaS driven by CSRD mandates, defense-adjacent deep tech, robotics modernization of the Mittelstand, and clinical-stage biotech programs attract institutional participation. Can choirs be a form of protest, and what kinds of resistance could they provide in the midst of climate crises? Our mini-series, ‘as a chorus' begins with Niamh Schmidtke's work, CHANTER (Aughinish). Their 15 minute audio introduces us to an aluminium refinery and it's impact on the local population. Combining song and audio description, the work brings together its own chorus, inviting us to join their melodies, building from the individual to the collective as our awareness of their injustice intensifies. Together we discuss how the work incites forms of direct action, and the need for collective making. This work was made with the support of Askeaton Contemporary Arts.Voices (in order of appearance); Bernadette Hayes, Inbher Glenn Community Choir, Monya Riachi, Christopher Clery, Grainne Hassett and Akinsola Lawanson.Bio:Niamh Schmidtke (b. Dublin 1997, they/she) is an artist, lecturer and arts facilitator based across London and Limerick.

Napriek všeobecne prospešnému cieľu má Green Deal veľa odporcov, ktorí namietajú, že EÚ takto neúmerne zaťažuje priemysel i bežných ľudí a vo výsledku poškodzuje svoju konkurencieschopnosť. Your host, Allen Hall, shares the renewable industry news you may have missed. Allen Hall: Okay, starting off the week over in Romania, the European investment bank is investing 30 million euros in a major wind farm project in Romania. The poster two project located near the Black Sea, will have a capacity of up to 400 megawatts. That's enough to supply over 1.4 million Romanian households for an entire year. The EIB is partnering with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners on the project with the total investment expected to be in excess of 500 million Euros. Construction is due to start later this year and it will bolster the European Union's push for climate neutrality by mid-century. German energy Giant RWE, reported an adjusted EBITDA of 1.3 billion euros [00:01:00] for the first three months of 2025. Adjusted net income amounted to 0.5 billion euros as expected earnings were below the level of the same quarter last year. This decline was primarily attributable to normalization of income in the flexible generation segment and a weaker start to the year in the trading business. The commissioning of new offshore wind farms, solar plants, and battery storage facilities had a positive impact on the company's performance. RWE commissioned 600 megawatts of new generation capacity in the first quarter alone. The company, currently has new plants with a combined capacity of 11.2 gigawatts under construction. Michael Mueller, chief financial officer of RWE, stated that they were reaffirming their full year earnings forecast after a solid start to the year. He noted, that the company is making great progress in expanding its portfolio in a value accretive manner. Construction projects remain on schedule [00:02:00] and on budget. Over in Norway, Equinor is warning it may cancel its Empire Wind Project off New York's coast. Following a Trump administration stop work order, the company is spending $50 million weekly to keep the project afloat while awaiting resolution. Molly Morris, president of Equinor's US renewable energy arm, describe the situation as unsustainable. The Interior Department led by Secretary Doug Bergham ordered Equinor to halt construction on April 17th. The order cited information suggesting the Biden administration may have approved the project without a thorough environmental analysis. The stop work order stemmed from a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. However, Equinor says it has not seen the report and is not aware of the specific concerns raised. The project represents a significant investment for Equinor. The company has already invested $2.7 billion in the [00:03:00] Empire Wind Facility. Currently, 11 vessels with 100 workers remain on board, sitting on the water, waiting for an order to resume work. That's this week's top. New stories. Stay tuned tomorrow for the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast.

The European Investment Bank has existed since the inception of the European Union in the 1950s, but despite its vital role as the EU's lending arm, it has not gained the media attention of institutions such as the European Commission or the European Parliament. That is now changing, however. The EIB is taking on a more high-profile role, financing projects in the fields of security and defence. This is a shift that our guest has referred to as a "seismic shock". Nadia Calviño is the president of the European Investment Bank, and the first woman and first Spaniard to lead the institution. She served as First Vice-President of the Spanish government and Minister of Economy, Trade and Enterprise until December 2023, in the cabinet of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Allen Hall: Starting off the week, the European Investment Bank is making bold moves to accelerate wind energy development across Europe, signing significant agreements with both BNP Paribas and Banco Satandier. These partnerships will generate up to 16 billion euros in wind energy investments through innovative counter guarantee agreements. The initiatives are part of the EIB's broader 5 billion euro wind power package, demonstrating Europe's commitment to renewable energy expansion and industrial competitiveness. The deals will enable manufacturers to receive advanced payments and provide performance guarantees for new wind projects, while also supporting supply chain efficiency and grid interconnections. This financing structure is backed by Invest eu, the eus ambitious program aiming to mobilize over 372 billion euros in investments by 2027. 2400 onshore wind turbines representing 14 gigawatts of capacity. While the upcoming election has introduced some uncertainty with skepticism from leading parties, Industry experts still remain optimistic. The CDU, likely to lead the next government, is expected to maintain support for wind energy given its reliability and cost effectiveness in producing clean energy. Over in the UK, Octopus Energy's groundbreaking investment platform, The Collective, has demonstrated remarkable success with its first two wind projects selling out within just one week. The platform democratizes renewable energy investment by allowing public participation with investments ranging from 25 to 20, 000 with no fees. Located in Yorkshire and Wales, these projects attracted hundreds of investors. And the company is now expanding to expand the platform through its Pass the Power campaign, inviting more renewable energy projects to list on the platform. And in the United States, despite challenging political headwinds, Xcel Energy is making significant progress in renewable energy deployment in the Upper Midwest. Their ambitious plan includes adding 3, 400 megawatts of wind energy and 550 megawatts of solar power. The company aims to retire all coal plants in the region by 2030 and potentially reduce emissions by up to 88 percent compared to 2005 levels. The plan also includes innovative energy storage solutions including testing new iron air battery technology at their Becker site. That's this week's top news stories. In April, a group of multilateral development banks signed an agreement to work more closely together, known as a viewpoint note, which set a series of goals, including scaling up their financing capacity, and delivering more on climate. Earlier this week, at the U.N. General Assembly, the heads of MDBs sat down with U.N. leaders to identify how they could make more progress to deliver those goals. Devex heard from Ilan Goldfajn, president of the Inter-American Development Bank, about the steps taken so far. Goldfajn said there had been considerable progress in unifying the goals of the MDBs with the Group of 20 major economies and with U.N. agencies. MDBs have increased lending capacity by $400 billion over the next 10 years, mostly through reforms but partly due to closer working, Goldfajn explained. He added that last year, the banks had lent a quarter more on climate and doubled the amount of finance mobilized, compared to 2022. He also highlighted several projects where IDB had worked together with the World Bank and the EIB. As we commemorate what would have been the 73rd birthday of the unparalleled Rush Limbaugh, I'm struck by the profound influence his voice had on America's conversation about freedom and liberty. Today, our episode stands as a heartfelt tribute to Rush's enduring legacy, as we explore the heart of American exceptionalism through the lens of his iconic commentary. We're weaving together the powerful insights from "Radio's Greatest of All Time: Rush Limbaugh" with my own reflections on our nation's founding principles, Rush's unwavering faith in our inherent rights, and the indomitable American spirit.Key Points from the Episode:Take a moment to consider the might and moral authority of our armed forces, the guardians of liberty. We tackle the complex yet pressing topic of "peace through strength," recognizing the delicate balance between championing human rights and avoiding the pitfalls of being the world's enforcer. Together, we'll celebrate the victories and valor that have shaped our nation's history, from defeating despots to catalyzing peace in the Middle East through the Abraham Accords. Let's pay homage to the brave souls who have fought for freedom, and the founding fathers who envisioned a land of unlimited potential.Concluding with an homage to Ronald Reagan, we draw parallels between his and Rush's vision of America as a shining city on a hill. Sharing stories of personal enlightenment, I recount how Rush's insights fostered a deeper appreciation for Reagan's leadership - one marked by triumph over adversity and an unbreakable bond with the American people. As we honor Rush Limbaugh in this tribute, we invite you to join us in upholding the foundational values he championed, and to continue building upon our collective spirit of optimism as we forge ahead into the future holding high the torch of Liberty that Rush for three decades behind the golden EIB microphone gave voice too!God Bless Heaven's anchorman!Other resources: Music Credit:  The Pretenders, My City was GoneMore goodnessGet your FREE Academy Review here!Get our top book recommendations listGet new podcast episodes dropped into your email box easilyWant to leave a review? Friday Brain Clearing: No, Politico, conservatives have not become “anti-business”; A reporter does the most beautiful thing for all of us; Randi Weingarten goes to the new Mecca. To answer again, I was not sad when I didn't get the EIB gig. Think of Fridays own our show like mental house cleanings: we make sure we don't miss anything in the news cycle and continue to apply God's Word. Today: two separate articles in the Politico contend conservatives are against what they call “corporate-capitalism.” But, The Politico is not capable of seeing what we are against because they are lobbyists who also do some writing. For example, we are against Pfizer, which is a government not a company; we are against the CDC, which is a pharmaceutical company, not a government agency. Pfizer just got to needle rape people, it got to shut down schools, it got to experiment on hundreds of millions of people in direct violation of the Nuremburg Codes. The CDC's scientists got paid by pharma. What we are against, Politico, is the unholy alliance of these entities, which have morphed into one thing, from which you make your money. I will make that case in better form in the show. Oh, my goodness, I love this comparison. The current Whitehouse Spokesliar, who has her job because of her physical characteristics and sexual preferences, stands in a box built with walls and explains that a Nation that can alter global weather with taxes cannot figure out how to build walls that stand up to heavy winds. I love this equally, but differently: a Spokesliar for the State Department made some claims about Russia he said were based upon recently declassified information. Then, a reporter did the unthinkable: he asked the Spokesliar, “where are those documents?” This is the look the Spokesiar's facial muscles produced at that question. It's not the last item, there is more in the show, but I am now going to call myself what Nick Hudson has adopted as his Title: a Collusion Theorist. What does God's Word Say? In response to the latest member of the Podcast family to ask me if I was sad when I wasn't put into the Maha's show time on EIB, I share this scripture and say with no reservation whatever: No. I was not sad in the least. THE THESIS: In a fallen world, we should not be surprised that entire business sectors are built around lies. We can treat this as horrible news, or we can give praise to God for giving us all the easiest, pass / fail that will ever exist.  THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Matthew 6:22-24 “If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be! “You cannot serve two masters: God and money. For you will hate one and love the other, or else the other way around. Luke 16:13-15   “You cannot serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one master and love the other. Or you will be loyal to one and not care about the other. You cannot serve God and Money at the same time.”  The Pharisees were listening to all these things. They criticized Jesus because they all loved money. Jesus said to them, “You make yourselves look good in front of people. But God knows what is really in your hearts. What people think is important is worth nothing to God. 1 Timothy 6:9-12  But people who long to be rich soon begin to do all kinds of wrong things to get money, things that hurt them and make them evil-minded and finally send them to hell itself. For the love of money is the first step toward all kinds of sin. Some people have even turned away from God because of their love for it, and as a result have pierced themselves with many sorrows. O Timothy, you are God's man. Run from all these evil things, and work instead at what is right and good, learning to trust him and love others and to be patient and gentle. Fight on for God. Hold tightly to the eternal life that God has given you and that you have confessed with such a ringing confession before many witnesses. Hebrews 13:5-6  Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” Why Can't We Serve Two Masters? Your true master is the one you love. God cannot coexist with a second master as He is the One and Only. If we have established another master in our life, such as ourselves, money, selfish ambition, etc., then it means we will end up hating God. THE NEWS & COMMENT: Michael Burry saw the mortgage business for what The Party made of it: a scam set to fall. Now, he has compared it to the Covid response.  Michael Burry of ‘Big Short' Fame Says ‘Silliness' in Markets Is Back; The investor who bet against the housing market ahead of the financial crisis has been predicting another crash for months.  The Figurehead pretends he is “forgiving loans” but he is actually--once again--forcing you to bail out Wall Street.  Studies Show Biden's Illegal Student Debt Scheme Is Welfare For The Rich We cannot be shocked by this. D.C. is a godless CIty of greed. Just look at Mitch McConnell and his corrupt wife:  Trump Is Right. Mitch McConnell And Elaine Chao Spent Decades Getting ‘Rich On China' Foremost [a company owned by Elaine Chao's Father] is technically based out of New York but largely operates out of China, where at least 70 percent of its freight, mostly industrial, is delivered. Not only are a majority of Foremost's ships built in state-owned shipyards, but some are even financed by the Chinese Communist Party. They are then used to deliver cargo outlined in contracts with the communist government, which has clearly stated goals to rapidly expand its industries to compete with the U.S. Foremost and the Chao family have benefitted from loans estimated to be between $350,000 and $1 million from the U.S. government and loans from Chinese banks known by the Trump administration as threats. Again, this is a company owned by the father-in-law of America's top congressional Republican and the father of the former transportation secretary. Not only do Chao's father and sister Angela Chao still share leadership over Foremost, but the pair also once sat on the board of an offshoot of the CSSP together. This trend of the Chao family expanding their influence in China only continued as McConnell and his wife burrowed deeper into the American political system. When Trump named Chao head of the Department of Transportation in January of 2017, her family publicly rejoiced — likely at the opportunity to further their business interests. That same month, Chao's sister Angela was named independent non-executive director of the CCP-affiliated Bank of China. McConnell still expresses some support for curbing China's ascent, but whether his concern is sincere or political is difficult to say. Not only do McConnell and Chao's family members financially benefit from doing business with communist China, but so have McConnell and Chao. The political duo may not have a formal stake in the Chao shipping empire, but they have certainly amassed wealth from the business. The biggest evidence for this came in 2008. Just one year after James Chao joined CSSC Holdings, in addition to running Foremost, McConnell received a “gift” of $5 to $25 million from his father-in-law. As Politico reported, that payment significantly bumped McConnell's net worth, which was measured at around $3.1 million in 2004, to between $9.2 million and $36.5 million in 2014. Several members of Chao's family, including Angela and James, also contributed more than $1 million to McConnell's re-election campaigns. In other words, the founder of an unofficial arm of our top adversary's navy is helping keep McConnell in U.S. leadership. According to Schweizer, these kinds of payments could have been money designed to keep a favorable relationship between McConnell and the Chao family. I lost a dear friend to suicide. Before he died, he shared with me his recollection of what a banskter did to his firm and his career. It's my opinion it ultimately lead my friend to take his life.  Jamie Dimon's $13 Billion Secret; The inside story of JPMorgan Chase's landmark mortgage settlement THE LISTENERS: Todd, I love your show! I used to listen to you on EIB. Your comparison of what has happened with the plandemic and the Big Short was great and made me want to watch the movie. However, when I researched it and found out that it has 74 uses of the F-word, I just can't do it. That's like one every 30 seconds! For me that's a non-starter. I don't know how you can put up with that. Maybe your description of yourself raising your hand in the “VIP” meeting inspired me to speak up, but I would just say that you should give some kind of a warning when mentioning a movie like that (maybe you did?). I know it's hard to find one without something bad in it, but 74?! Why do they have to ruin so many potentially good movies?
