Omnivore Recordings co-founder and four-time Gramny-winning producer Cheryl Pawelski has figured out how to do what she loves for a living. She went from obsessing about music in Milwaukee to having great adventures in the "floater pool" at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. With stints at Rhino and Concord as well, she oversaw ambitious reissues by, among others, the Band, Big Star, the Smithereens, the Beach Boys, Pat Benatar, Nina Simone and the Miles Davis Quintet. Her long association with Wilco has included deluxe boxes for Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (which won a Grammy) and, earlier this year, A Ghost Is Born. She won another Grammy for the 2023 7-CD set Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos. She recounts it all with the passion of a fan, even as she deals with the challenges of running a record label and the recent loss of her Altadena home in the Southern California wildfires. Commerce released its much-anticipated chip export-control updates yesterday, December 2. But today's guests are unimpressed. But are we right to have hoped for more? To discuss, I'm joined by Dylan Patel of SemiAnalysis and Greg Allen from CSIS. A disclaimer: We recorded this yesterday the same day the regs were released, and given their complexity our takes are inevitably provisional. We get into: What's in the new controls: high bandwidth memory, FDPR, and the Entity List. Why key assumptions in Biden's approach to export controls limited How China's stockpiling spree may have already rendered these new rules partially obsolete, and what policymakers can do about that going forward. The law-enforcement approach vs. the counterintelligence approach, and whether export controls should be a foreign-policy tool or simply a law-enforcement activity. How the new chip controls are like removing puzzle pieces just one at a time — and why that's exactly what China wants. The “America First” rationale for domestic chip production. Why the Democrats' regulatory design philosophy has favored massive complexity to the detriment of enforcement — and what the Trump administration might do differently going forward. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I'm thrilled to welcome Greg Allen, owner and winemaker of Cuatro Dias Winery in Paso Robles. Greg's story is as bold and inspiring as the wines he crafts. Before stepping into the vineyard, Greg spent years serving as a firefighter, dedicating himself to protecting lives and communities. But even in the midst of the firehouse chaos, his passion for winemaking quietly burned. That passion eventually ignited into a full-blown journey, and Cuatro Dias was born—named after the four-day firefighter shifts that shaped his life and gave him time to dream big. Now, Greg pours his heart into every bottle, blending the strength of his past with the creativity and finesse of his present. Today, we'll explore his transition from the fireline to the vineyard, his philosophy on winemaking, and, of course, the magic behind Cuatro Dias wines. While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. Also, please be sure to check the box for automatic downloads so that new episodes of Exploring the Wine Glass show up in your “next up feed.” The next best way to support Exploring the Wine Glass is to tell your friends.
