May is usually the best month for florists, Mother's Day being a big reason. But Donald Trump's tariff war is raining pain on their bestselling season. Pierson's Flower Shop and Greenhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, expects customers to dial back on purchases because of higher prices forced by tariffs. “We ship a lot from Europe, we ship a lot from down south, South America,” shop owner Al Pierson told KCRG, a local television station. “Everything's being affected.” It's not like mass rose production can be brought to the U.S. Nearly 80 percent of cut flowers sold here must be imported....Article Link
Gen Z may not be the liberal base of support many on the left hoped they would be. Today, there is a growing split between voters under 30, with 22-29 year olds favoring Democrats by 6.4 points and 18-21 year olds favoring Republicans by almost 12 points. As America's youngest voters are growing up in the age of COVID lockdowns, social media, and cancel culture, conservative and MAGA ideology is emerging as the new counter-culture, giving young men in particular an opportunity to escape the world around them. How will the youngest voter cohort change the bases of both parties? And how will young voters change as they grow older? Milan Singh is the founder and Director of the Yale Youth Poll. Originally from Cambridge, Massachusetts, he is a junior in Pierson majoring in Economics. He has previously worked as a researcher at Slow Boring; a data science fellow at Decision Desk HQ; and social policy intern at the Niskanen Center. When it comes to cybersecurity, corporate executives are often the most targeted individuals—but their greatest vulnerabilities may lie beyond the office walls. In this episode recorded live at RSAC Conference 2025, Dr. Chris Pierson, Founder and CEO of BlackCloak, joins hosts Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli to unpack why digital executive protection is now a business necessity, not a luxury.Dr. Pierson—a former two-time CISO, DHS cybersecurity advisor, and chief privacy officer—explains how BlackCloak addresses a long-ignored problem: the personal digital exposure of high-profile individuals and their families. From compromised home networks and identity theft to impersonation scams powered by deepfake technology, today's cyber threats easily bypass corporate defenses by exploiting softer targets at home.Digital Protection That Mirrors Physical SecurityJust as companies rely on third-party providers for health insurance or physical executive protection, Dr. Pierson advocates for a dedicated, privacy-conscious solution for securing personal digital lives. BlackCloak functions as a concierge-style service, guiding individuals through essential steps like securing high-risk accounts, managing privacy settings, shrinking their attack surface, and implementing a modern, multifactor verification system to prevent impersonation attacks.A Framework for ActionAt RSAC, Dr. Pierson unveiled BlackCloak's Digital Executive Protection Framework—a practical tool that includes 14 tenets and over 100 specific actions to assess and improve personal digital security maturity. The goal: help organizations prioritize what matters most. Instead of trying to secure every account or device equally, the framework focuses attention on high-value targets like banking credentials, communication platforms, and personal data exposed via data brokers. From Deepfakes to Real-World ConsequencesPierson also highlights the alarming growth of AI-powered impersonation attacks. With 42% of surveyed CISOs reporting executive-targeted deepfake incidents, and financial losses climbing, companies must think differently. It's not just about technology—it's about trust, relationships, and verification at every level of communication. This episode sheds light on how executive protection is evolving—and why your organization should consider extending its security strategy beyond the boardroom. Business owner Karl Tiefenbacher has officially joined the Wellington mayoral race. Speaking exclusively to Newstalk ZB Wellington Mornings host Nick Mills, Tiefenbacher announced he plans to stand as an independent candidate for the mayoralty. He has yet to announce any policies but said his core priorities include changing the culture of Wellington City Council, keeping rates down, and stopping wasteful spending. Tiefenbacher, who calls himself “Wellington's ice cream guy” as the founder of Kaffee Eis, has previously run for council twice and lost. Last year he fell short by only 45 votes to the Green Party's Geordie Rogers in a byelection for the Pukehīnau Lambton Ward. His campaign website is now live, with the slogan “Wellington, It's Time!”. “Wellington has expensive challenges ahead. As a business owner I understand it's essential to invest wisely, with responsible and affordable decisions”, his campaign site states. This time around he also plans to run for a council seat in the Motukairangi Eastern Ward. His biography states Tiefenbacher was born and raised in Wellington and had “a successful career in the finance sector for 18 years” before starting cafe and gelato manufacturer Kaffee Eis. Tiefenbacher has previously been critical about the Golden Mile project and moves to pedestrianise Cuba St. He describes himself as a centrist. Earlier this month, the local branch for the Labour Party confirmed it had to extend nominations for a mayoral candidate, after no one put their hand up to run for the party. Confirmed candidates for the mayoralty include incumbent Tory Whanau, city councillor Ray Chung, predator-free champion Kelvin Hastie, Wellington Live owner Graham Bloxham, and former city councillor Rob Goulden. Of the confirmed candidates, all but Bloxham and Whanau have previously run for the mayoralty unsuccessfully. Diane Calvert, a third-term councillor and former mayoral candidate, is rumoured to be eyeing up running, telling the Herald this month she still hasn't decided. “As an independent, I'm not on a deadline set by a political party,” Calvert said. John Apanowicz, another current councillor, said he's still keen to run but is seeking the support of his family and will announce his plans at a later date. Luke Pierson, a businessman and founding member of lobby group Vision for Wellington, had been rumoured to be considering a run for the top job, but has confirmed he's not going for it. “I can rule it out. My focus is on Vision for Wellington - which is inherently apolitical,” Pierson said. The local election will be held on October 11. Candidate nominations open on Friday, July 4 and close on August 1.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to this probing, brand-new, fact filled episode of Light ‘Em Up.We are currently being actively downloaded in 119 countries, globally. Please spread the word with a friend regarding our podcast! Remember, we are here for you and because of you!We tackle the topics that touch your lives! We hear so much talk about the topic of Qualified Immunity — but few really know what it is and what it consists of in much detail. THIS episode will put to bed ALL of those questions.Bringing a §1983 Civil Rights lawsuit against any government entity is not an easy task to accomplish.Qualified immunity is a judicially crafted legal doctrine and concept created by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Pierson v Ray in 1967.The doctrine was created to protect government officials, particularly law enforcement officers, from frivolous lawsuits and financial liability when they acted in good faith in legally unclear situations. We discuss the requirement (as the law states) that there must be a constitutional violation that infringed upon the rights of a person that was “clearly established” at the time it was committed. Many legal scholars argue that qualified immunity has no legal basis and is not grounded in the text or history of the relevant statutes at 42 U.S. Section 1983. Many argue that the doctrine signals a retreat from the protections afforded to Black victims of racial terror by the Civil Rights Act of 1871 (also known as the Ku Klux Klan Act).Several of our guests on Light ‘Em Up have run face first into the stone-cold, hard truths and effects of qualified immunity.— As a case study we'll examine the fact pattern in a case called Betts v Brennan whereby an officer was sued for using his taser on a non-compliant motorist.— We examine and amplify on the historic background of the concept of qualified immunity.— Drilling down on the original intent, pro's/con's and purposes of the law.— Search out how this doctrine, for lack of a better description, has become “twisted and perverted”, providing what for all intents and purposes is a never-ending “get out of jail free card” to members of law enforcement (and other governmental agents) — even when they violate the law.We share inconvenient truths how qualified immunity (as it has been regularly implemented):— erodes justice and public trust— blocks accountability— sets an unreasonably high legal barrier— serves to further injure those who have already been injured — as victims must identify a near-identical precedent, meaning they have to cite a similar case that a prior victim experienced to challenge misconduct, as we mentioned, an often “insurmountable legal hurdle”.As education is always a foundational pillar of Light ‘Em Up, we introduce you to the concept of Respondeat superior: A legal doctrine and Latin term that literally means, “let the master respond”.It holds employers liable for the actions of their employees — which is also known as vicarious liability. And we empower you with six of the Supreme Court's landmark decisions that have further defined and carved out this judicial doctrine since its inception by the Warren Court. This episode is jam-packed with rock-solid research and information regarding the legal concept of qualified immunity. After today, after tuning in, you will speak with authority about the topic — forever setting you head and shoulders above and apart from everyone else — who speak without knowing.Tune in and be educated and empowered you with the facts, not fiction!Follow our sponsors: Newsly & Feedspot. We want to hear from you!
Question: Can you help me with this question: “If Jesus died for all and has legally purchased all through substitutionary atonement, then how can those people go to hell? That would be a ‘Double Jeopardy' of the sins of those people being paid for twice.” This is my husband's main question and I would really appreciate help with it based on Calvinism.Response: The Bible says that God wants all to be saved: “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Pet 3:9). But the Bible also says that not all will be saved (Matt 7:21-23; Lk 13:22-27, etc). Nevertheless, the Bible also tells us that God is all powerful (Ps 147:5; Jer 32:17; Matt 19:26, etc).Calvinism has its own explanation. They strive to make things add up. “If God is all powerful,” the reasoning goes, “and God wants all people to be saved, then all people will be saved. Since not all people will be saved, Christ must have died only for some; God must not want all to be saved.”This is unbiblical according to the much-explained John 3:16 (what “world” means), and the blunt statement of 1 John 2:1-2: “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” But to some, it makes nice, theological sense. This is, however, putting one's reason above God's Word; believing what makes sense rather than believing all of what God has said. As Dave Hunt wrote in Calvin's Dilemma: God's Sovereignty vs. Man's Free Will (pp 9-10), “William L. Pettingill wrote, ‘God insists upon His sovereignty and also upon man's responsibility. Believe both and preach both, leaving the task of ‘harmonizing' with Him.' In a similar vein, A. T. Pierson, although a leading Presbyterian, declared that both ‘the sovereign will of God and the freedom of man' are taught in Scripture and that ‘if we cannot reconcile these two, it is because the subject is so infinitely lifted up above us. Man is free.... Thus the last great invitation in God's Book is an appeal to the will.'“Unfortunately, neither John Calvin nor many of his followers today have been willing to accept both sides of this biblical teaching. The result has been devastating in its consequences for the gospel: that man can only reject Christ; he cannot accept and believe in Him unless he is sovereignly regenerated by God. Calvinism refuses to accept what so many great evangelists have recognized is vital. Edgar Mullins expresses very well the essential balance that is missing:“‘Free will in man is as fundamental a truth as any other in the gospel and must never be canceled in our doctrinal statements. Man would not be man without it and God never robs us of our true moral manhood in saving us.... The decree of salvation must be looked at as a whole to understand it. Some have looked at God's choice alone and ignored the means and the necessary choice on man's part.'”
In an era where personal and professional lives are increasingly intertwined in the digital realm, the security of high-profile individuals extends far beyond corporate firewalls. Executives, board members, and high-net-worth individuals face growing threats not just to their businesses but also to their families and personal lives. The convergence of cybersecurity and physical security has never been more evident, and BlackCloak is at the forefront of addressing this modern challenge. In this episode of ITSPmagazine's Brand Story series, hosts Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin sit down with Dr. Chris Pierson, CEO and Founder of BlackCloak, to explore the increasing risks posed by cybercriminals, data brokers, and even nation-state actors, all of whom exploit publicly available information to orchestrate real-world threats. With the rise of doxing, swatting, and targeted attacks on corporate leadership, it is clear that safeguarding digital identities is no longer optional—it is essential.Dr. Pierson shares insights on how BlackCloak's concierge approach blends cutting-edge technology with a personalized human touch, ensuring that executives and their families can navigate the digital world securely. From removing personal information from data broker websites to mitigating deep web threats, BlackCloak's unique approach focuses on proactive protection rather than reactive crisis management. The conversation also touches on recent high-profile security breaches and their implications, highlighting the urgent need for businesses to extend cybersecurity measures beyond the enterprise network. As digital and physical threats continue to merge, organizations must rethink their approach to executive security. This episode is a wake-up call for leaders who may underestimate the exposure they and their families face. Tune in to learn why digital executive protection is no longer a luxury but a necessity, and how BlackCloak is setting the standard for safeguarding the modern executive. For those looking to take control of their digital privacy and security, visit BlackCloak.io and connect with Dr. Chris Pierson on LinkedIn. When Jessie Pierson and Lodowick Post argued over a fox in early 19th century Southampton, they probably didn't think the resulting court case would echo down the ages. Yet here we are 220 years later talking with legal historian Angela Fernandez about the odd, improbable history of Pierson v Post. A professor of law and history at the University of Toronto, Fernandez has delved deep into the case. Her “legal archaeology” uncovered important, presumed-lost information on the early phases of the proceedings. Her 2018 book Pierson v. Post, The Hunt for the Fox: Law and Professionalization in American Legal Culture, unpacks more of the impact and context around the decision. On today's episode we discuss the local history surrounding the case, more about the Piersons and the Posts, and the surprisingly whimsical inner life of the legal profession. Foundations of Property Law I. Introduction Property law, which governs the ownership, use, and transfer of property, is crucial for regulating resource allocation, resolving disputes, ensuring stability, fairness, and economic development. Property is defined as a "legally protected interest that a person or entity has in a tangible or intangible thing," and property rights are essential to understanding the relationships between individuals, communities, and the state regarding resources, land, and possessions. Categorization of Property Real Property: Land and anything permanently attached (buildings, trees). Personal Property: Movable items (vehicles, jewelry, furniture) and intangible rights (intellectual property, stocks). Tangible Property: Physical items that can be touched and moved. Intangible Property: Non-physical assets (patents, copyrights, bank accounts). Bundle of Rights Theory Property rights are a collection of rights including the rights to possess, use, exclude others, and transfer ownership. These rights are not absolute and may be limited by law, agreements, or societal interests. II. Historical Context and Evolution English Common Law Roots US property law is based on English common law, which developed from the feudal system where land ownership was hierarchical, with the king owning all land and tenants holding it in exchange for obligations. The decline of feudalism and rise of market economies led to a gradual transformation of landholding into private ownership where individuals could acquire rights to own and transfer land freely. American Values and Historical Injustices US property law reflects individual liberty and economic opportunity. The Homestead Act of 1862 granted settlers land ownership, emphasizing property as a tool for nation-building and personal empowerment. However, property law has also been used to dispossess Native Americans and perpetuate social and economic injustice, as seen in the Doctrine of Discovery and the treatment of enslaved people as chattel property. Landmark Judicial Decisions Pierson v. Post (1805): Established the principle of first possession, ruling that ownership is conferred upon the individual who first takes possession of a resource. Johnson v. M'Intosh (1823): Reinforced federal authority over land transactions with Native Americans. III. Acquisition of Property Property can be acquired through various methods, including: First Possession: The first person to take control of a resource or object becomes its owner (illustrated in Pierson v. Post). Adverse Possession: Acquiring property by occupying it for a statutory period, under specific conditions (open and notorious, continuous, exclusive, and hostile possession). Discovery: Finding new, unclaimed lands or resources. Capture: Taking control of wild animals or other unowned objects. Creation: Acquiring property rights through invention, artwork, or discovery (the basis of intellectual property law). Gift Transfers: Elements of a valid gift include intent, delivery, and acceptance. IV. Key Doctrines and Concepts Estates and Future Interests: Estates are legal interests or rights in land, determining the duration and conditions of ownership (fee simple, life estate, fee tail, defeasible estates). Future interests are rights to property that will vest in the future (reversion, remainder). Rule Against Perpetuities: Prevents indefinite restrictions on property transfer. Co-Ownership: Multiple individuals share ownership (joint tenancy, tenancy in common, community property, tenancy by the entirety). V. Conclusion Property law seeks to balance individual rights, societal interests, and economic needs. It is a dynamic system that continually evolves to address modern challenges. Understanding the foundational principles of property law is essential for navigating complex and changing situations.

Jay goes solo, discussing the challenges and triumphs of launching Pierson's latest product, walking listeners through the “Musk Algorithm”—a five-step framework for process creation and optimization: 1. Question assumptions and requirements. 2. Delete unnecessary components. 3. Optimize processes. 4. Accelerate production. 5. Automate intelligently. And do that in them order, or else! Alongside, Jay delves into Pearson's philosophy of a people-centric lean company, the value of questioning long-standing practices, and how to foster a work culture where innovation thrives.
American democracy is in trouble. At the heart of the contemporary crisis is a mismatch between America's Constitution and today's nationalized, partisan politics. Although American political institutions remain federated and fragmented, the ground beneath them has moved, with the national subsuming and transforming the local. In Partisan Nation: The Dangerous New Logic of American Politics in a Nationalized Era (U Chicago Press, 2024), political scientists Paul Pierson and Eric Schickler bring today's challenges into new perspective. Attentive to the different coalitions, interests, and incentives that define the Democratic and Republican parties, they show how contemporary polarization emerged in a rapidly nationalizing country and how it differs from polarization in past eras. In earlier periods, three key features of the political landscape-state parties, interest groups, and media-varied locally and reinforced the nation's stark regional diversity. They created openings for new policy demands and factional divisions that disrupted party lines. But this began to change in the 1960s as the two parties assumed clearer ideological identities and the power of the national government expanded, raising the stakes of conflict. Together with technological and economic change, these developments have reconfigured state parties, interest groups, and media in self-reinforcing ways. Now thoroughly integrated into a single political order and tightly coupled with partisanship, they no longer militate against polarization. Instead, they accelerate it. Precisely because today's polarization is different, it is self-perpetuating and, indeed, intensifying. With the precision and acuity characteristic of both authors' earlier work, Pierson and Schickler explain what these developments mean for American governance and democracy. They show that America's political system is distinctively, and acutely, vulnerable to an authoritarian movement emerging in the contemporary Republican Party, which has both the motive and the means to exploit America's unusual Constitutional design.
