Katy Winton has reliably been one of the top contenders on the EWS circuit, but she found herself without a factory ride in 2021 and had to put together her own team at the 11th hour to keep racing. And despite all that chaos, she had another strong season, which culminated in her signing with GT Factory Racing for 2022. So we sat down with Katy to get the whole story, and she did a remarkable job of peeling back the curtain on day-to-day life as a professional racer during the season; contract negotiations and managing a career; and a whole lot more.TOPICS & TIMES:Katy's 2021 season & being left out of a factory ride (2:19)Putting together Moxie XI (15:47)Racing as a privateer after years on factory teams (25:16)Mindset & balancing training with running a team (30:57)Managing the season & traveling with Joe Nation (35:04)2022 team talks & signing with GT (42:49)Goals for 2022 (50:42)Katy's Big Idea (52:17)RELATED LINKS:Introducing: Blister LabsGetting Here: Gunnison & Crested ButteThis Week's Gear GiveawayGear Giveaway / Newsletter SignupBecome a Blister Member / Get our new Buyer's GuideRegister for the 2022 Blister SummitBlister Mountain Bike Buyer's Guide See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Joe Nation is a mountain bike racer who's done things differently. We chat about Joe's approach to racing and how that's changed over the years. Hear how Joe made the move to enduro and what it's been like riding for Pole. Jonathan Rivera has been podcasting since 2008. He knows how podcasting can work for your business. That's why the top coaches and consultants trust his team at The Podcast Factory® to help them leverage the power of podcasting to reach more people, make a lasting impact, and become more influential leaders in their communities. This all started as a personal development project. In a world where too many people focus on only ONE aspect of their lives without integrating the rest, Jonathan believes we should all think bigger. Do more. Have more. Be more. Give more.Jonathan had some cool friends who showed him how to improve his business and his life, from family, faith, fitness, and finances. He wanted to learn more from them, so Jonathan figured he could record their conversations – share them via podcasts – and they would help everyone who listened to them talk. While picking Joe Nation’s brain (my podcast producer)... I ot a revelation about why I have more podcast reviews that other podcasters with MUCH bigger audiences. And that answer is kinda tied to something I talked about in last week’s podcast. And based on my experience, THIS is the secret to having a successful podcast. Heck, a successful following ANYWHERE. The story about how Joe became the behind the scenes filmmaker for YouTuber Phillip Defranco.
I was feeling good... In fact... in spite of being a graying 52 year old, no-longer- handsome guy... I was feeling that macho swagger again. Like back in the day... if ya know what I mean. Interesting timing on that... because I was interviewing a woman. AND... because she’s just simply maaarvelous... the interview went swimmingly. In fact... I learned some pretty life changing thangs. So... with the hope and expectation that it’ll do the same for you, too... my producer Joe Nation and his team hit the “publish” button. Therefore... you can click here and maybe... hopefully... I hope... no, I pray... in the name of all things good and holy... it’ll change your life, too. All the best, Doberman Dan

America's public pensions are in big trouble, facing a shortfall of $5.6 trillion . The enormous pension debt figure is growing larger because public pensions overestimate their expected returns on investments, and fail to collect necessary funds from the cities, towns and states that employ civil servants. Joe Nation, a project director at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, is on the front lines of the nation's retirement crisis. His home state, California, has the largest public pension system in the country, The California Public Employees Retirement System or CalPERS. CalPERS, with $299 billion in assets, is underfunded by $164 billion, and the debt is going to grow larger. In this episode of Talkenomics, Nation explains why California is just one of many states and cities with apending public pension crises that will test taxpayers and retirees. Further reading: Adam Shapiro's report on CalPERS cutting benefits for the first time.

What is it like to actually live the life of a professional YouTuber, an often all-consuming, 24/7 job that regularly blurs the line between entertainment and private reality? On this episode of New Mediacracy, we sit down with three prolific YouTube personalities - Olga Kay, Exotic Jess and Joe Nation - who have been living in the YouTube trenches (and for a while, under the same roof) for years, and survived to tell the tale. Join NM regulars Chris McCaleb and Bernie Su ("The Lizzie Bennet Diaries") as they discuss building and maintaining an audience, the importance of quantity vs quality, working in the circus, raising a teenage daughter, and the scary, crazy, exciting and wonderful life of a professional YouTuber.
