Hello friends,We're so happy to be able to share this conversation with the co-creators of the Rational Creatures YouTube series that retells the story of Jane Austen's Persuasion.Inspired by that viral video sensation known as The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, aka LBD, Rational Creatures is powered by crowd-funding, inspiration, and friendship. Series co-creators Ayelen Barrios Ruiz Pagano, Jessamyn Leigh, Hazel Jeffs, and Anya Steiner bonded over their love of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and their passion for seeing classic stories retold in contemporary settings. Jessamyn Leigh created a series called Twincidents based on Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors, and Hazel Jeffs created Away From it All, a retelling of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Maddening Crowd - all four women worked on these projects together while dream-scaping a Persuasion retelling. And then they found themselves crowd-funding it, and producing it. Rational Creatures is powered by crowd-funding, inspiration, and friendship.Ayelen and Jessamyn told us that in this series the characters are remade to look more like their friends: They're working, they're dating, they're LGBT, they're diverse, and of course they're pining extravagantly. For this episode of the Austen Connection podcast we caught up with Ayelen Barrios Ruiz Pagano, who spoke to us from Toronto, and Jessamyn Leigh in Oregon. We talked about Jane Austen's classic story of Persuasion, the characters of Anne Elliot, and Frederick Wentworth, and putting it all into a contemporary retelling with Rational Creatures. You can follow the conversations about the series, the characters, and new episodes as they drop on the Rational Creatures series Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and of course on YouTube where you can see all the episodes as they drop - for free.Have you watched The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or any other YouTube retellings of classic literature? Let us know your favorite characters, favorite themes, and favorite series here at the Austen Connection: https://austenconnection.substack.com/Enjoy!More viewing and listening: Check out the wonderful trove of contemporary YouTube series that remix classic literature, many of them created by women. The Rational Creatures team has worked on a few of them together, including Jessamyn Leigh's Twincidents based on Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors, and Hazel Jeffs' Away From it All, a retelling of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Maddening Crowd. Greta Gerwig's solo directorial debut tells the story of Lady Bird (nee Christine) in her final year of high school – dabbling with not just a new name, but also new boys, new hobbies, pushing the boundaries of her old relationships, and somehow disappointing her mother just by being herself (and applying to out-of-state colleges). Relatable much? Mary Kate Wiles (Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Fairly Odd Parents: Fairly Odder) definitely thought so.Then, Jordan has one quick thing about her recent SDCC Panel (on Bold New Voices in Horror).***With Jordan Crucchiola and Mary Kate Wiles

Sarah's out today, so we're especially delighted to be joined by the incredible Mary Kate Wiles, of Lizzie Bennett Diaries, Shipwrecked Comedy, and web video fame! Mary Kate's first go in the NBI hot seat begins with the story of a bad liar from Alabama, which the gang turns into a heist with high rewards, deeply annoying stakes, and incredibly slow moving escapes. Then they meet the soon-to-be mother-in-law from hell and turn it into a family drama that is a trick, potentially a trap, and features the worst piggy bank of all time. Then the guys talk to Mary Kate about, among other things, the origin of Shipwrecked, the legacy of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, wearing many hats at all times, and why every actor should produce something. Plus: a new sub-genre of heists, Eugene O'Neill plays come to life, decoy invites, Timothée's Logan Lucky moment, and the Rachel Getting Married of it all. Today's Bad Ideas™: Idea #1 Idea #2 If you'd like to check out more of Mary Kate's work, follow her on Twitter and Instagram, check out The Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder, and go explore the fine literary comedy of Shipwrecked! ITVT is pleased to present the (PART 2) latest episode of Televisionation: Screen Culture, our new video series exploring the symbiotic relationship between culture and filmed content—television, streaming, and cinema. Hosted by fandom expert Lisa Crawford, Screen Culture was created for thoughtful discussions about the impact of premium filmed content on today's society. In this episode Lisa is joined by Bernie Su, a pioneer of digital and interactive content. Bernie is the founder of 96Next and a three-time Primetime Emmy award-winning interactive creator and showrunner. His current project is Artificial, the Twitch original live audience-interactive science fiction series now entering its fourth season. The show's third season was presented under quarantine as weekly two-hour live and interactive episodes that were remotely produced. The series was awarded the Peabody Futures of Media Award and the Primetime Emmy for Innovation in Interactive Media. His other works include The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved, adaptations of Jane Austen's novels. Known for being two of the iconic interactive series of the era, they represent the first and second Primetime Emmys ever won by YouTube. Bernie and Lisa discuss his journey from aspiring writer to interactive showrunner, and how the film Big Hero 6 inspired him to take larger and more personal steps in representation—through an Asian American family in Artificial—beyond his initial success with diverse and representative casting of his earlier shows. The conversation also covers the evolution and future of multiplatform, interactive storytelling and the importance of “consequential” audience engagement—as in Artificial where the audience votes on major decisions that directly impact the series and its characters. Bernie shares how advances in artificial intelligence have already affected the show, and how they might affect artists in the future. Finally, Lisa and Bernie touch on: The contrast with scripted television formats that require “story gods.”How audience interactivity could impact older formats such as multi-camera sitcoms. How an audience-voted Game of Thrones might have turned out.
