Tom opens the show listing for Jill a series of possible names for future off-road oriented crossover trim levels. Staying on topic, the hosts discuss plans for Lincoln to introduce a body-on-frame off-road model based on Ford's popular Bronco SUV. The new truck may arrive in showrooms before 2030. Tom talks briefly about the 2026 RAV4 Woodland PHEV he recently evaluated. He is very impressed by the ride and handling, less so with the compact crossover's big-guy space. Listen in for details. Still in the first segment, Jill reviews Kia's most affordable model, the K4 compact car. Her test vehicle came in sporty GT-Line Turbo trim in new-for-2026 hatchback guise. What does Jill think of her $32,000 ride? Listen in for details. In the next segment Jill and Tom are joined by Chip Lupo of WalletHub. Chip shares results of a WalletHub study identifying the U.S. states in which consumers are making the highest car payments relative to that state's median income. Listen in to hear a list of the top-ten states. In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's "Fake Plymouth" quiz. Listen in to hear how Jill does. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Welcome back to the Jeep Talk Show! In this episode, Tony sits down with Tom Zielinski — lifelong off-roader, event creator and operator, Tread Lightly! board member, former racer, and one of the most connected people in the off-road and automotive event world. Tom shares stories from the "alleged" early days of sneaking into gravel pits, the motivation behind serving on the Tread Lightly board, why he still rides the bumper a little too close on the trail, and how Detroit traffic and Houston Beltway driving shaped his need for speed. They talk V8 Gladiator dreams, meeting at Easter Jeep Safari, the magic (and occasional chaos) of Moab, and why new people at EJS come away wide-eyed. Tom also opens up about appearing on the Automotive Advantage podcast with Dr. Jamie Meyer and Justin Chesler, how he builds real industry relationships ("be in the mix every day, don't be an idiot, follow through"), the origin story of his events (born from dealership sponsorship frustration and a bit of youthful guilt), and the importance of Off-Road 101 education. Key Highlights Tom's path from power-sports dealerships and mentors to creating major events Why Holly Oaks works so well and how new Jeepers become "one of us" Tread Lightly, trail stewardship, and the difference between appropriate "shenanigans" and damaging public lands The heartwarming side of guiding first-timers and industry newcomers at Moab and 4Fest Real talk on building contacts, saying yes (sometimes too often), and staying behind the curtain while delivering **Timestamps 00:00 Introducing Tom Zelensky and His Off‑Road Journey 00:52 – Trail Etiquette: Slow Down and Enjoy the Ride 01:38 – Houston Beltways: Toll Roads and Unrestricted Speed 02:32 – From Detroit Trucks to Jeeps: Embracing Speed 03:10 – TRX Launch and Dreaming of a V8 Jeep 03:46 – Rumors of a Hemi‑Powered Gladiator 04:10 – Connecting at EJS: Meeting Tom and New Friends 04:46 – Moab Adventures and Jeep Overload 06:13 – First‑Timer Experiences and Detroit Four Fest Highlights 07:22 – Crowd Perceptions at Easter Jeep Safari 07:55 – Community Dynamics and Curmudgeons at Off‑Road Events 09:19 – Networking at EJS and Introducing the Automotive Advantage Podcast 11:39 – Overview of the Automotive Advantage Podcast and Its Hosts 13:02 – Recap of the Automotive Advantage Interview and Upcoming Projects 14:28 – The "Magic" of Networking and Staying in the Mix 17:05 – Half‑Day Work Ethic and the Importance of Follow‑Through 17:52 – Motivation Behind Events, Business Insights, and Off‑Road Education 22:02 – How Our Off‑Road Events Were Born: From Idea to Execution 25:14 – Adventure Spirit, Off‑Road Parks, and Public Lands Ethics 27:58 – Educating Off‑Roaders and Preserving Trail Access 29:27 – Advocacy for Public Lands and Shared Responsibility 31:05 – Inclusivity and Respect for All Recreational Activities 31:42 – Upcoming September Events: Cars at the Station and Detroit Four Fest 33:45 – One‑Zero‑One Off‑Road Classes and Registration Details 37:11 – Engaging New Off‑Roaders: Locker Demonstration and Learning Moment 39:38 – FOURFEST at Holly Oaks: Suburban Off‑Road Park and International Attendance 41:02 – Jim Morrison, Jeep Leadership and Bob's Health Update 43:46 – Supporting Tread Lightly: Trail Clean‑Ups and Community Service 44:46 – Toledo Jeep Fest Plans and Inflatable Camper Warning 45:41 – Final Thoughts, Trail Encouragement, and New Friendships 46:23 – Video Stabilization and Brief Commentary 46:51 – Legal Disclaimer and Liability Notice Links Detroit 4Fest / registration: https://4festevents.com Tread Lightly!: https://treadlightly.org Jeep Talk Show: https://jeeptalkshow.com Support the show, hit the trails responsibly, and we'll see you out there (or at Holly Oaks in September)! Ken Roczen posted a reel of himself doing normal, unglamorous strength training. No BOSU balls, and none of the sport-specific fluff we're all used to seeing. So I had to bring on Ben Greenwood, founder of Race Ready Offroad Coaching, to break down why that clip mattered so much to him. Ben's been coaching off-road racers for almost a decade now, and he doesn't sugarcoat it. Most of us skip the boring fundamentals because they don't look cool on Instagram, and then we wonder why our bodies fall apart by our thirties. We get into it all, man. Why an eight-week program is basically a joke when you actually do the math on how many times you touch a barbell. His own back locking up at 30 years old and thinking his racing career was over. How a "qualified" nutritionist almost sent him into the ground chasing a keto diet while he was training like a maniac. And since he flew out to the States earlier this year, we compare GNCC to Australian off-road racing, why you can actually walk out and watch your rider on track over here but not over there, and we go down the Josh Strang and Shane Watts rabbit hole because I had to ask who the greatest Aussie export to make it in America really is.If you're a vet rider just trying to keep riding your dirt bike without your body falling apart, this one's for you. Go follow Ben on Instagram at @offroadperformancecoach and check out Race Ready Offroad Coaching if you want to actually build a program instead of guessing. If you're enjoying the show, please subscribe and leave a review, it really helps more riders find us. Enjoy getting seat time and we'll see you next episode.Support the show

Jimmy and Tyler sit down with James, the International Distributor for Carbon Off-Road — a 10-year-old Australian winch and recovery gear company quietly making a lot of noise in a space dominated by legacy brands. James is a Kiwi who grew up on farms in New Zealand’s Taranaki region before moving to Australia 22 years ago. He found off-roading the same way a lot of adults do: by needing friends and buying a Suzuki. He joined a Suzuki club, met Carbon founder Dan through those connections before Carbon even existed, and eventually joined the company. Now he’s traveling the US in what Tyler accurately describes as a “homeless American gypsy” role — meeting wheelers, attending grassroots events, and slowly building the Carbon Off-Road name in the US market. He stopped in Sacramento on a layover to come on the show, having spent a week with Jimmy and Tyler at Trail Hero Expeditions. Carbon’s pitch is three words: lighter, faster, stronger. Their 12,000 lb flagship is the lightest 12K winch in the world — just under 58 lbs fully installed, aluminum housing, 480 amp max current draw, lifetime mechanical warranty on the gearbox, 5-year electrical on the motor and control box. It retails at $899 USD. The RS9 is their race-spec winch — 9,000 lb capacity, 80 feet per minute unloaded, and James jokes it should come with a parental advisory sticker because it will unspool 78 feet of spectra fiber rope in about a minute if you don’t have tension on the line. On the recovery gear side: Carbon just launched a full lineup available in three colorways — High Viz (orange, commercial/heavy equipment), Blue, and Tactical (so popular it exceeded all expectations). Their Essential Recovery Kit ($349 USD) includes soft shackles, kinetic rope, tree saver, recovery ring, gloves, and a bag that doubles as a winch blanket. The Tac 4×4 Kit ($599 USD) upgrades to spectra-fiber soft shackles rated at 18,000 kg working load limit, adds a utility rope (replaces the tree saver — works as a bridle, rock anchor, winch extension, or general purpose rope), and comes in a MOLLE-style bag. Everything is designed in-house in Australia, third-party tested to minimum breaking strength, and not white-labeled — James is emphatic about this. The show also covers: Carbon’s 10th anniversary camping weekend at Black Duck Valley (120 vehicles showed up despite two weeks of rain), what it’s like trying to sell winches at a trade show for 14 hours in a row, why James hasn’t been able to drive his own trailer-queen Suzuki Sierra much lately, King of the Hammers 2026 (“we saw a lot of winches stalling out — caveat: none of ours”), the Australia/New Zealand land access crisis vs. US land access fights, and why the name Carbon has nothing to do with carbon fiber. Bonus content includes the full Australia ongoing-topics segment: Vegemite vs. Marmite (James sides with Marmite, the New Zealand version), camping vs. glamping (coffee machine in the tent = crossed the line), and the fanny pack question that previously required Australian listeners to call in and educate Jimmy about what the word “fanny” actually means. James’s closing advice: In a recovery situation, don’t rush it. Take a breath, assess, and figure out how to do it safely. Send us Fan MailJohn grew up in Auburn, Washington with a passion for automotive work. He excelled in shop classes and purchased his first car—a 1968 Camaro—at age 14. After high school, he worked at a quick lube shop before joining an automotive repair facility. When the owner retired, John's parents bought the business, and after navigating early challenges, John eventually took over. The shop celebrates 30 years in business this year.Auburn Auto Repair and Off-Road operates as a 50/50 split between general repairs and off-road specialization. John's youngest son recently joined the team; John hopes he'll eventually lead the business.John wheels extensively across the Pacific Northwest and beyond—Moab's iconic trails (Pritchett's, Cane Creek), Sand Hollow, and Trail Hero in Utah. He's raced Ultra4 for eight years, competing at King of the Hammers (KOH) from 2018–2025. His standout achievement: winning the EMC (4500 class) in 2022 with a flawless race. A Dakar-designed Ford Raptor T1 is about to find out what American desert racing feels like, and we're here for every gritty detail. We sit down with Matt Martelli, CEO of Unlimited Off-Road Racing, to talk about why Ford chose the Casey Folks Vegas to Reno run for the Raptor T1's American debut and what makes this run so different from the rough-and-tumble world of Baja-style courses. Think long distance, high speed, and a 550-mile day that stresses cooling, electrical systems, and durability in a way most racing formats never touch. We also get into the fun rabbit holes only off-road racing can create: what “unlimited” really means when trucks push 1,000-plus horsepower, 40-inch tires, and suspension travel measured in feet, not inches. Matt shares why the sport still leaves room for the garage-built crowd alongside multi-million-dollar teams, and we revisit the roots of short course and stadium racing through the legacy of Mickey Thompson. If you love motorsports history, fabrication culture, and the way racing tech shapes production vehicles like the Raptor and Bronco, this one hits hard. Then we pivot to the headlines: a Ford worker fired over a $1.95 cookie, and the growing trend of drivers downgrading from premium gas to regular to save money. We break down what modern ECUs and knock sensors actually do, when premium is required versus recommended, and why the real tradeoff is often performance, not instant damage.Listen now, subscribe so you don't miss the next drop, and if you enjoyed the show, share it with a fellow car nerd and leave us a quick review. Off-road racing is one of the toughest forms of motorsports on the planet, and this week we're joined by one of the sport's brightest stars, Christopher Polvoorde. From his early days in short-course racing to competing at the highest levels of Trophy Truck competition, Christopher shares what it takes to survive—and win—in the brutal world of desert racing. We dive into the preparation, the sponsorships, the incredible teamwork behind every race, and the mindset required to compete at events like the Baja 1000 and King of the Hammers.Christopher also talks about his journey through the sport, life behind the wheel of a 1,000+ horsepower Trophy Truck, and what the future holds as his career continues to climb.Whether you're an off-road enthusiast, motorsports fan, or just love hearing incredible stories from passionate people, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
Whether you’ve never been off-road before or you’re just getting started, Jimmy and Tyler break down the 10 most important things they wish someone had told them early on — all vehicle-focused, all hard-earned from real experience on real trails. This one came from a simple question: what do we actually say when we’re out on the trail with a first-timer? Not camping tips, not gear tips — how do you drive differently when the ground stops being flat? The list covers the two biggest safety non-negotiables (seatbelt and vehicle control before you start the engine), then works through hydration and sun exposure on multi-day trips, gears on descent (and why your automatic can go full runaway in seconds), knowing all four of your vehicle’s tools — lockers, crawl box, winch, cutting brakes, rock lights — and how to actually use them in the right scenario. From there: tires on rocks, tire placement, why your rear tires matter more than your front tires in an obstacle, differentials and ground clearance, and how to get comfortable with being deeply uncomfortable. Send us Fan MailMatt Adair sits down with Big Rich Klein to discuss a life shaped by cars, languages, and the off-road community. Beginning as an exchange student in Germany at 16, Matt's fluency in automotive passion led him to abandon an Air Force Academy appointment for car sales. What started as a snowy day test drive of a Jeep Cherokee evolved into decades of off-roading, racing, and journalism—including pivotal roles at King of the Hammers and Crawl Magazine.Matt shares stories of serendipitous friendships forged at lakebed campfires, a memorable medical emergency at KOH, and the profound impact of community members like Camo and Jesse Combs. Today, he runs a boutique Porsche dealership while still racing a home-built Cherokee at 24-hour endurance events.Throughout the conversation, Matt emphasizes that the true reward isn't trophies or milestones—it's the remarkable people encountered along the way. As he prepares to write a book about his improbable adventures, Matt reflects on how following passions and embracing the unexpected leads to a life rich with meaningful human connection.Support the show
