The Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race took place on August 10, 2024, and my good friend, Steve Bennett was up for the challenge. Steve has loved his mountain bike since he was young, and throughout the years has dabbled in different disciplines of the sport. Steve loves to race, and has had quite the success, even though he is so humble about how skilled he is on a bike. On a whim, he put in for the lottery for Leadville, and to his surprise found out he was in. He and his friend, Adam Fisher, made there way to Colorado a week before the race, and both made it over the finish line. Steve was so patient with my questions, and he went through every detail of his experience, his gear and more. I so appreciate Steve for stepping out of his comfort zone and sitting down with me to share his journey to the finish line in Leadville, CO. Best of Explorer: Silk Road Mountain Race: Riding the Toughest Mountain Bike Race in the World with Extreme Bikepacker Cat Jaffee

Follow extreme bikepacker Cat Jaffee as she competes in the Silk Road Mountain Race - the toughest mountain bike race on the planet. 1,200-miles long, with over 115,000-feet elevation gain, athletes traverse the high mountain passes and remote valleys of Kyrgyzstan for 14 grueling days. Traveling completely unsupported, wild camping along the way, only a handful of riders attempt it and a fraction of those reach the end.  But the racing is only part of the appeal. For centuries, The Silk Road operated as a network of trading routes connecting China and the Far East with the Middle east and Europe. It was responsible for spreading some of the most important ideas, culture and economics throughout the world and its effects still resonate across the world today.  The mountains of Kyrgyzstan, which the race passes through, traces one of the central routes of the Silk Road, used by traders and wanderers throughout the Middle Ages, and the nomadic culture which still grazes their sheep in these high alpine pastures today has remained largely since those days.  It had always been Cat's dream to bikepack the Silk Road. But on the cusp of that dream coming true she came back from an assignment in Africa to the news that she had contracted malaria, dengue fever and had ovarian cancer. It was devastating news. She spent a year undergoing chemotherapy and Stage 4 cancer treatment.  Most of us would have given up on the race. Most of us would have struggled to even get out of bed. But Cat kept training throughout it, riding 100s miles each weekend all day and through the night. Then a year later, despite her illness, she found herself on the start line of the toughest mountain bike race in the world.  This is a story about that adventure, but it's also a story about the power of determination to beat the odds and follow your dreams no matter what stands in your way. Get ready to ride the Silk Road. Highlights: ·    Find out what it takes to compete in the toughest mountain bike race in the world ·    Explore the spectacular mountains and ancient culture of Kyrgyzstan's high mountains ·    Be inspired by Cat's story of determination and survival in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. Cat is also an award-winning podcast producer. Starting at 10,600- feet, the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race is considered one of the highest and most challenging mountain bike races in the world. In 2004 Dee and Dave Mable pushed off at E. Sixth and Harrison for a 12-hour, 100-mile race over six long climbs on their tandem bicycle. That first year the pair earned their buckles by a scant four-and-a-half minutes. Oh, and let's not forget to mention we met at the Trans BC Enduro stage race. When there are two wheels involved, Sarah's spirit for adventure, connection, and fun has taken her down many trails, roads, and paths. In addition to all the time Sarah Sturm spends cycling (in the saddle) and professional commitments, she also coaches young riders in the Devo Program in Durango, CO, and has a successful graphic design business called Oso Creative. Sarah isn't only inspiring a new generation of riders, but also the fellow racers lining up next to her. Sarah Sturm's trajectory as a cyclist hasn't always been easy. Early on, she found she wasn't having any fun racing her bike and after a hiatus, came back to it with a newfound sense of joy and perspective. In this episode, you'll immediately feel her ability to connect with just about anyone, her positivity, and vulnerability no matter who you are. "I know progress not perfection. We hear these things, but it's so hard to actually embody that sometimes because you just want to do well all the time and be the best. While mostly unknown, the Driftless Region has a rich history in Mountain Biking spanning back to the mid 80’s. Paired with seemingly endless miles of paved and gravel roads, this area is a cyclists dream. Today's episode of the Eat for Endurance Podcast continues my Athlete Nutrition Profile Series with speaker, author, coach, and endurance athlete, Travis Macy. You name the sport, he's probably done it – and maybe even all in a single event! You will finish this episode feeling inspired to seek out your own next big adventure in life and/or in sport, even if you are not an ultra-athlete yourself. A little more background on Travis - he has finished over 120 ultra endurance events in 17 countries, including setting a record in 2013 for Leadman (an epic endurance event consisting of a trail running marathon, 50-mile mountain bike race, Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race, 10k road run, and Leadville 100 Run), all while raising two young children with his wife in Evergreen, Colorado. He is a former classroom teacher with a Master's degree in Education, runs a college consulting business with his wife, coaches private clients to finish a variety of endurance events, and wrote the awesome book The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life. I read it back in 2015, after Travis and I met at an Endurance conference, and thoroughly appreciated the important and practical advice that he has gleaned from his years of professional racing and how it applies to other areas of life. I particularly enjoyed our exploration of how his principles can be applied to one's nutrition! Next week, Travis is setting off on his next big racing adventure – Eco Challenge Fiji – which is “the ultimate expedition race in which international teams of athletes will race non-stop, 24 hours a day, across hundreds of miles of rugged backcountry terrain complete with mountains, jungles and oceans.” The Challenge will air on Amazon Prime in 2020 – so stay tuned if you'd like to watch! I love this yearly episode where we get to kick back and chat to Brian Murphy and Dave Proctor about La Leyenda mountain bike race in Colombia. For those who have not heard any of our previous interviews with the race founder Murphy and the Comms director Proctor, La Leyenda del Dorado is a UCI accredited event and is Colombia's most prestigious multi-stage mountain bike race, where adventurous professional and amateur cyclists from around the world race side by side.  As formidable as it is breathtaking, the Leyenda route tackles an extraordinary variety of terrains and climatic conditions – tropical river valleys, sweeping singletracks through stunning coffee plantations, jungle and snow topped volcanoes.  While it sounds that we are enjoying a few pints together as we put this conversation down, I can assure you that the guys are in Cali and I am in Bogotá, but all the same, it's great to hear about the new developments in the race, the evolution of the style and the new additions being presented for 2020. Perhaps closest to my heart and interests is the fact that La Leyenda is designed to give back to Colombia, not only as a phenomenal and positive window on the country but also on the ground where their social responsibility has led to funds being put forward to help with the construction of part of a school in one of the towns visited along the race route.  Tune in for an upbeat good news story about Colombia

All the while Dalton enjoying the “unknown history” of an object while “antiquing.” “Decluttering” your life and the person spearheading the movement along with “sparking joy” in our lives along with how we are living life through our mobile devices. Even…perhaps confined to our mobile device versus living our life in real time. Are we burdened or confined to our devices to make our life simpler? We also touch on the availability of “customer service” on the internet 24 hours a day and as a “mom and pop” retailer the challenge to compete. And the question about becoming a billion dollar retailer is one that is daunting at best and the sacrifices it would take. We continue talking about drum gear and meeting the needs, expectations of our clients while guiding a drummer to the best gear for their dollar. Leadville: The 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race Podcast, p/b Floyd's of Leadville

You've got a weekend to come to Leadville to pre-ride some of the course. It's a perfect opportunity to get a sense of how you do at altitude, how hard those iconic climbs really are, and maybe to settle some of those pre-Leadville jitters. Hottie and Fatty have decidedly different takes on what you should ride.  In this episode, Fatty has a phone conversation with Ty Hall, the guy who raises money for the Leadville Legacy Foundation each year by starting the race in last place and racing his way through the field. How does he do it? What's his hoped-for time this year? What's his take on the new wave start? This is a must-hear conversation with one of the nicest, fastest, most-knowledgeable racers in the field.  And finally, Hottie goes on location to Windburn Studios, where he has a conversation with Tony Manzella about how a cyclist-led spin class can really pay off on race day. Thanks for listening to LEADVILLE: the podcast for the 100 mile Mountain Bike Race, Presented by Floyd’s of Leadville —the show that breaks down, builds up, gets you ready, and freaks you out for the highest and hardest one day mountain bike race in the country.

[spp-timestamp time="25:00"] Sharing the right stories, maybe they could click with some people, clearly, that clicked with him. He just needed a goal. [spp-timestamp time="30:00"] Wilderness 101 continued. I know exactly the first hill and every one thereafter for the next 40 some miles. I have a much better understanding as to the type of training that needs to be involved.
