But this is a critical role we can play to help families and businesses recover after their lives and livelihoods are upended. On this episode, we catch up with Pendleton's Country Market owners Karen and John Pendleton to discuss their experience recovering from an EF-4 tornado that ripped through their farm in Lawrence, Kansas, in May of 2019. The Army is rushing to develop its new cyber and electronic warfare units. But in its rush it's outrunning its supply of people — so much so that the first cyber battalion is mostly vacant. For details, Federal Drive with Tom Temin turned to the director of Defense Capabilities and Management Issues at the Government Accountability Office, John Pendleton.

It's one thing to have an army — it's something else to have an army that's fully ready to roll should the national need arise. The service is working to reach higher readiness goals by 2022 but the Government Accountability Office found that it's having difficulty on a number of fronts, including the ability to properly staff up. GAO's Director of defense capabilities and management issues, John Pendleton, joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin for the highlights.

The Air Force's most high performance jets are also rare birds. Only 187 F-22s were built before the program was curtailed in 2011. Important as they are, the Air Force does a suboptimal job of managing them, and that's according to the latest look-see by the Government Accountability Office. The Navy has serious concerns about the readiness of its fleet of combat vessels, partly because of years of backlogged maintenance. But theres been comparatively less attention paid to the civilian-crewed ships operated by Military Sealift Command. The sealift and combat logistics fleet is vital to military operations around the world, and according to the Government Accountability Office, the average ship is 40-years old, and the Navy has no long-term plan to replace them. John Pendleton, director of Defense capability and management issues at GAO, joined Jared Serbu on Federal Drive with Tom Temin to talk about the offices concerns.

Nancy the maid tells Pollyanna that she thinks John Pendleton and Miss Polly were sweethearts many years ago when they were young.

Pollyanna learned about prisms from John Pendleton and teaches him the “glad game”.   

John Pendleton asks Pollyanna to come and live with him (so he could adopt her).  Since Pollyanna thinks Mr. Pendleton and Miss Polly were once sweethearts, she assumes that Aunt Polly will come, too!  This surprises Mr. Pendleton.  

Pollyanna finds out John Pendleton was not in love with Aunt Polly but was once in love with her mother, but lost her to Pollyanna’s father whom she married.  Mr. Pendleton wants Pollyanna to ask Aunt Polly a question….Will she let Pollyanna come to live with him. 

John Pendleton comes to visit Aunt Polly to ask about Pollyanna’s condition.  Aunt Polly tells him about Pollyanna’s paralysis.  Mr. Pendleton assures Aunt Polly that when he’d asked Pollyanna to live with him, she had wanted to be with her instead

Jimmy Bean hears John Pendleton and Dr. Chilton talking about Pollyanna.  Dr. Chilton thinks he knows a doctor that can heal Pollyanna.

Pollyanna tells the ladies of the Ladies Aid about Jimmy Bean’s need for a home, but they cannot find him one.  On the way home through Pendleton Woods, she finds John Pendleton with a broken leg and must go to his home to telephone for a doctor.  Dr. Chilton comes to help.
