This week, Misha chats with Dr. Alex Shaw, Associate Professor at the University of Chicago's Department of Psychology. His research explores how children and adults navigate the complex world of social behavior, with a particular focus on morality, fairness, and social judgments. In this episode, Dr. Shaw discusses his fascinating research on why attempts to stay neutral in moral and political disagreements can sometimes backfire. His work reveals that when people choose not to take sides on contentious issues, they may actually be viewed as less trustworthy than those who openly disagree. Through a series of experiments, Dr. Shaw and his colleagues found that this distrust stems from observers perceiving neutrality as strategic deception. The conversation also covers broader insights about human social behavior and includes advice for PhD applicants.Alex's paperAlex's faculty pageLab websiteMisha's websitePodcast Twitter: @StanfordPsyPod Podcast Substack: https://stanfordpsypod.substack.com/ Let us know what you thought of this episode, or of the podcast! :) stanfordpsychpodcast@gmail.com

Sounds Like Liberty

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Anthem by Rush. I shouldn’t need to say much about this one, it’s literally based on an Ayn Rand book’s themes. It’s also a kick ass rock song without being overly complex in lyric or musicality. This week in I Heard This Happened: different Jazz’s. Does that make sense? I said it cause it sounds confusing.. Nicky’s album this week is Underwater by Elephant Gym. Somewhere between jazz, funk, modern prog and hip hop, this album is great of purely thinky music. It keeps spiraling down, down, down. It’s primarily instrumental but does incorporate a few different vocalist on the second half. My favorite part is where the MC on Bad Dream keeps shifting between what I assume is Japanese and English. Lizzie brings us Sprinkled Eyes by Dotschy Reinhardt. An interesting jazz guitar slash singer songwriter album by an German artist. It has moments where it carries the breezy feeling of Corrine Bailey Rae but with a more complicated guitar emphasis. Clearly trying to show off some jazz chops. Uber-feminist that I am *chuckle* I’m always happy to promote lady guitar players, maybe it’ll rub off on my daughter and get her away from Rihanna. I’d like to add that the english as a second language accent is endearing to me, especially since it;s jazz. This week’s interview is with Alex Shaw, host of The Classical Liberal Podcast. Alex is I believe our first non-Ancap but I couldn’t resist having him on because his pod is super-duper entertaining. And as a guest he delivered the goods. In the process of recording the episode I had planned for this week (and was running behind on anyway) I wanted to throw in a quick shout-out to another podcaster I'm a big fan of. What was supposed to be a short thing at the end of the episode somehow turned into yet another rant, largely centered around how Apple is awful. The only reason this isn't even longer is because I accidentally hit the stop button in the middle of ranting. Rather than start up again, I decided to cut out while I'm still young. (Contrary to what I said in the cast, I did wind up editing this a bit. [Digital Gonzo 2013] This was the most requested Gonzo show in history. For a project of this magnitude we needed a Dynamic Analysis, so the first hour is a collection of audio articles. The second half focuses on the rest of it. There are definitely still issues with combat and structure that affect the gameplay experience regardless of how you felt about its close, but there is also a deep and rich adventure to be had finding everyone and everything in the last hours before the galaxy takes on the Reapers. There were so many people who wanted to talk about this game that I couldn't not confine them to a single, epic round-table, so instead we have three. Appropriately you'll meet many old faces and some new. Everyone has something to say. At the close we spend a good 48 minutes talking about the Citadel DLC with full plot spoilers for that as well as Leviathan and Omega. [Digital Gonzo 2013] I'm trying out a new format this week. Rather than the usual round-table discussion this is a series of audio articles on Superman and in particular the 2006 film Superman Returns. This is the perfect film to do this for because it's hated by so many, liked by several, it opens up the archetypal hero for analysis in a way none of the earlier films did and it had an incredibly protracted development cycle of nigh-on twenty years.   1. Intro  2. Superman Returns: Good, Bad or Both?  3. Kryptonite 101  4. Kevin Smith on Superman Lives  5. The Non-Making of Superman 6. This is why Superman Doesn't Work Alone  7. A Couple of Things You May Not Have Noticed  8. A Comic Fan on Superman  9. Superboy  10. The Joy of Lex  11. Lois' Pain  12. Superman's Return  I hope you guys will find it entertaining, deep and funny. One of the benefits of this format is that it allows community members to get their views aired so that it facilitates a mix of viewpoints. I think this could potentially work a lot better than the cyclical bickering contest that contentious film reviews on podcasts sometimes become. Let us know on the forums what you think of it. Next week's Watchmen will be in the same style. This won't replace the standard Gonzo format, but it's not every film lends itself to the same uniform manner of review and this is simply another approach.  Chapter 2. This week the Moving Pixels podcast is joined by former Digital Cowboy and current host of the Digital Gonzo podcast Alex Shaw to discuss the changing face of the gamer.   When a game full of dungeons and dragons can sell to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars on release (yes, we're looking at you, Skyrim), it seems that what was once perceived as a hobby for freaks and geeks may "belong" to a slightly broader slice of the general culture than it used to. We consider generational shifts in attitudes towards gamers, the advent of social gaming, and the inclusivity and exclusivity that gaming as a past time may or may not have come to represent as a cultural practice as we have moved into the twenty-first century.
