It's natural to want to look away from the inevitable reality of death but Buddhism teaches that death is an alternate phase of life and makes up a larger universal cycle. To understand death is to deepen our understanding of and appreciation for life. Today's guest, John Plummer, of Cold Spring, NY, shares how facing his fear of loss improved his relationships and deepened his work as a film and TV writer.  References:The New Human Revolution, vol. 24, pp. 177–78A Piece of Mirror and Other Essays, pp. 79, 83–84.Leave of Grass by Walt Whitman.“Like the Sun Rising,” Journey of Life: Selected Poems of Daisaku IkedaUnlocking the Mysteries of Unlocking Birth and Death, p. 104.The Wisdom for Creating Happiness and Peace, part 1, revised edition.

What is it like to be on a narrowboat in the grip of a winter’s cold spell? How do you keep warm on a boat?  Living and working on the canal systems in winter has been notoriously difficult and hard. In this episode we reflect on what it entails to live on the canals in winter today. We also hear a piece of Victorian reportage by a journalist travelling on the Grand Union Junction flyboat, Stourport, in the late 1850s. We also find out why liveaboard boaters could be viewed as ‘floating hobbits.’Journal entry:“3rd January Sunday.I went out into the soundless sphere of night as the New Year was dawning and said “This is me and I am here. You seem so big and dark and unknown.” But I have known your brothers and sisters and have learnt to revel in the days of their sunshine and find their special beauties under skies of steel and water.Today is filled with clinging fog that chills the marrow and makes the bones ache, but your suns will soon come, and larks will sweep the skies again.Welcome.” Episode InformationIn the welcome section I mention the work of Andrew Plummer and his magnificent photographs. Não me foco no sofrimento, distraio a minha mente conversando, cantando e orando. (Mateus 18.22) Bom dia! Israel Belo de Azevedo

In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing John Plummer. John grew up in and around Nashville, TN.   He was unsuccessfully raised Southern Baptist and later baptized into the Roman Catholic Church.    He first came across independent sacramental churches in the mid-1980s.   After becoming actively involved in the ISM in the early to mid-90s, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1996 and consecrated in 1998.    He has degrees from Fordham – Bachelor of Arts in both philosophy & theology, Vanderbilt – Master of Arts, in history of Christian thought; and, the Graduate Theological Foundation – Doctor of Philosophy in theology.  He is perhaps best known for the published version of his dissertation, The Many Paths of the Independent Sacramental Movement.    John is now the associate pastor and bishop coadjutor at St Basil's Parish in Nashville, preaching and celebrating the liturgy every week. This episode is sponsored in part by Convergent Streams: The Premier ISM Magazine.  This podcast is produced by The Community of Saint George (The Young Rite).

China's investment in materials science makes it an attractive destination for young foreign researchers looking to relocate, with decent salaries and facilities that many western universities would envy.John Plummer, senior portfolio editor for Nature Research and a former senior editor for Nature Materials, based in Shanghai, says this investment is driven by the Chinese government's desire to deliver cutting-edge research and raise the living standard of people living in rural areas. The challenge, as with other parts of the world, is to give researchers independence and time to innovate, rather than face pressure to publish, and to deliver a quick return on investment, he adds.Xin Li, associate editor of Nature Materials, also based in Shanghai, describes China's technology transfer environment and how the country's lab culture compares to labs in the west. Finally, Plummer speculates on the likely impact of the current trade war between the US and China have on research collaboration and innovation.Nature Briefing See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
