The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated major changes to everyone's workplace, virtually overnight, and it took some time to get adjusted to the new reality where isolation is the safest option. But it's had tremendous, negative consequences for journalists reporting on every aspect of the pandemic -- from vaccine availability to the safety of school openings to the dating scene. Instead of being in the room to look decision-makers in the eye and hold them to account, BC's reporters are more often than not restricted by calling their questions in an opaque queuing system where no one knows who's being chosen to speak, nor why. BTS with CTV Vancouverpodcast producer/host and reporter, Penny Daflos, dives into the reality for reporters in British Columbia with CTV's legislative bureau chief, Bhinder Sajan, who describes the inner workings and political considerations that have kept journalist's arms-length from the province's top doctor and policymakers, while investigative reporter, Jon Woodward, colourfully describes the impacts of limiting reporters on the campaign trail as a Metro Vancouver mayor hits the mute button on an uncomfortable question.
Municipal politics generally don't capture the attention of constituents, much less observers outside the city in question, but that's definitely not the case in Surrey. Less than a year after winning a landslide victory, the mayor of Metro Vancouver's fastest-growing suburb is seeing support on city council crumble as he continues to stand by his election promises, using his political muscle to do so. BTS with CTV Vancouver host Penny Daflos and reporter Jon Woodward dig into the fiery goings-on at Surrey city hall, exploring the clash between rival political factions and what it means for a massive decision before those policymakers: whether or not to overhaul their policing model, a move that comes with considerable risk and cost.
Some people (who haven’t been named) apparently didn’t want to talk money laundering with experts studying the issue. But, a new provincial inquiry means they may be compelled to. Will they spill tea? And if so, will there be cookies? Featuring CTV’s Jon Woodward and a little person who could care less about the issue.
After nearly two months of secrecy, the Speaker of the House released a 76-page bombshell report outlining alleged questionable spending by two of BC’s top legislative officials: luxury hotel stays, pricey suits and a truckload of missing alcohol included. Speaker Darryl Plecas and his special advisor suggest that’s the tip of the iceberg, with more to come as the RCMP continues its investigation. But will any charges result from what’s being called a “culture of entitlement” in the upper echelons of the public service? BTS with CTV Vancouver host Penny Daflos chats with investigative reporter Jon Woodward about how he tracked down Plecas for a surprisingly candid interview about the investigation, learning the Speaker paid a personal price for he scrutiny that came with his allegations against two of the highest-paid officials in the province.

Elections are often called "news olympics" by journalists and the province-wide municipal elections on October 20th was no exception for the dedicated team at CTV Vancouver. In Part 1 of our Election Special, host Penny Daflos discusses the challenges of anchoring a fast-moving and scriptless multi-hour broadcast with co-hosts Mi-Jung Lee and Scott Roberts, while Show Producer Philip Sedlacek outlines the many moving parts the producer team had to stick-handle, as Results Host Bhinder Sajan and Results Producer (and math whiz) Jon Woodward explain exactly how we got the results on the air so quickly -- while Managing Editor Ethan Faber describes the complex and incredibly stressful process of deciding when to make the big call on who won the biggest races. This is the insider account of how CTV was first, fastest and most compelling in coverage of a major change election -- including how the apple slices got on the desk.
It isn't all sunshine and roses for our field crews -- sometimes it's sewage and corpse flowers! host Penny Daflos talks about the most putrid, repellent and malodorous assignments of their careers with the station's reporters and videographers. Here are the inside stories of the work that had them turning green (and even passing out!) from the stench. With guests Allison Hurst , Nafeesa Karim , Julie Nolin , Ben Miljure , Jon Woodward and Peter Bremner .BTS with CTV Vancouver
Structure fires are a sadly common on local newscasts, but they require a sensitivity and tact on the part of the reporters covering them, no matter how often they occur. host Penny Daflos discusses two recent fires that left families homeless and a small business-people without their livelihoods with her colleagues Jon Woodward and Sarah MacDonald . They spotlight the highly personal aspects of these stories and the poignant response from community members rallying around those who've lost everything.BTS with CTV Vancouver
Media relations, public affairs and communications specialists are all trying to do one thing: get the messaging and coverage want into the public realm. But that's often at odds with what the public deserves or needs to know. Host Penny Daflos discusses a recent and cringe-worthy encounter with reporter Jon Woodward and a spokesperson stuck in "the message box." Shannon Paterson also shares her experience with a notably frustrating example from a #BCPoli bigwig. they
