Listen to today's podcast... According to American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine the accident risk is two to six times higher for those suffering from sleep apnea than it is for regular drivers. Everyday, car crashes are caused by drivers with sleep apnea falling asleep at the wheel. I grew up with people who snored.  I thought that everyone did.  And I thought, like most people, that it was no big deal.  However, people with untreated sleep apnea are more likely to have motor vehicle crashes, hypertension, heart attacks, irregular heartbeat stroke, depression, impotence and diabetes. Do You Think You May Have Sleep Apnea? Are you often very sleepy throughout the day? Do others tell you that you snore or have short pauses in your breathing while you sleep? Are you known to choke, gasp, or hold your breath while asleep? Do you think you get a full night's sleep most nights but still wake up tired? Are you overweight? The Public Health Agency of Canada found that 26%of Canadian adults aged 18 years and older are estimated to be at high risk for having sleep apnea and only 5% of people at high risk have been tested for the condition. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!      Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Sleep Apnea Day and Sleep Awareness Week: If in doubt, get it checked out.  Go to see your doctor and ask for a referral to a sleep clinic. Decrease your risk. You can control your diet and weight, how much you exercise, how you use alcohol and caffeine and whether you smoke.  All of these can lower your risk for sleep apnea. Today I am delighted to share this imperfectly perfect, perfectly imperfect conversation with Professor Melissa Walls, an Indigenous researcher who works with American Indian and First Nations communities to promote health equity through culturally centered projects.Melissa Walls, PhD (Bois Forte and Couchiching First Nation Anishinaabe) is Director of the Great Lakes Hub for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian HealthDr. Walls is an Indigenous social scientist committed to collaborative research with Indigenous communities to promote health equity. Her involvement in community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects to date includes mental health epidemiology; culturally-relevant, family-based substance use prevention and mental health promotion programming and evaluation; and examining the impact of stress and mental health on diabetes. Dr. Walls's collaborative work has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Public Health Agency of Canada. In this episode, we explore her amazing work, her journey and how when any one encounters indigenous thought, the invitation is maybe not to interrogate it and, maybe just support it. An invitation to be curious and be open.Melissa's request is also: 'please stop making us justify who we are, because a lot has been taken already, and this is taking a lot of energy away from us."And so much more...I invite you to take a listen. I am sure you will love every minute of this. I know I did!

THIS IS A REPLAY OF EPISODE #85 FROM THE PSYCH HEALTH AND SAFETY PODCAST CANADA The Psych Health and Safety Podcast will be returning 14th January 2025! In this episode Ian speaks with Dr. Sandra Moll and they discuss why and how the peer support apps PeerOnCall (https://www.oncallapp.ca/) and Beyond Silence (https://www.beyondsilence.ca/) can provide game-changing early intervention for public safety personnel and healthcare workers. Early intervention can prevent a significant degree of harm and suffering. Sandra describes the design, implementation, and function of the apps. Currently the apps are in a research phase where they are researching "what works for whom in what context" to optimize efforts. In the podcast we review how peer support fits in the continuum of workplace mental health recommended by the WHO and why apps and the real people they connect can have a great impact. Peer support is one of many tools and having the right service at the right time can be critical to obtaining early support. PeerOnCall evaluation research was funded by Movember, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Beyond Silence research was funded by CIHR and PHAC. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent the views of the Government of Canada.

Listener discretion is advised.* According to the UN, Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed. Globally, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life. Annually, November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and this year, the date marks the launch of the global UNiTE campaign (Nov 25- Dec 10) — an initiative which kicks off the annual 16 Days of Activism. This is an opportunity to revitalize commitments and call for accountability and action from decision-makers, concluding on the day that commemorates International Human Rights Day on December 10th. Richie is joined by Melissa Ciummei. A Public Health Bill is being developed for Northern Ireland to update the current health legislation and provide the Public Health Agency with extraordinary new powers. It is horrifying. The new legislation would authorise the Agency to mandate vaccines, detain anyone who refused a vaccine, force people into hospitals against their will and quarantine someone indefinitely. For the most part, the people of Northern Ireland are blissfully unaware of these plans. To discuss the implications of it all, Richie is joined by investor, commentator and broadcaster Melissa Ciummei. https://www.health-ni.gov.uk/consultations/policy-proposals-inform-development-new-public-health-bill-northern-irelandhttps://www.facebook.com/melissa.ciummeihttps://x.com/KSCUBKEE

If you think it looks like COVID, you may be right. Canada's Public Health Agency says it's been seeing an increased spread of new, but less serious variants. Mosquitoes – if you live in Canada, you deal with these pesky bugs for a significant portion of the spring and summer. With warming global temperatures, it is likely that we will see a few new varieties of this irritating insect appear in the Canadian airspace, and unfortunately, this also means we have some new vector-borne diseases to deal with. Mosquitoes carry and help to spread a variety of infectious conditions to a variety of species – so keeping an “eye on the sky” and monitoring their movement, spread, and habitat preferences is important to public health and animal health. Luckily, Canada has a group of researchers that are working to monitor and study this very thing. Dr. Antoinette Ludwig, a veterinarian and epidemiologist with the National Microbiology Laboratory at the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Carleton University PhD candidate Marc Avramov, both study the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and the risk they pose for both human and animal populations, as well as the impact of climate change on these disease patterns.  Links of Interest: Information about Dr. Antoinette Ludwig and her research Timo-CS project details Relationships between water quality and mosquito presence and abundance: A systematic review and meta-analysis Avramov, Marc & Thaivalappil, Abhinand & Ludwig, Antoinette & Miner, Lauren & Cullingham, Catherine & Waddell, Lisa & Lapen, David. Her partner, Dan Quayle, opted for a medically assisted death It was a choice he made after waiting for chemotherapy and treatment that didn't come fast enough. The oncologist would come in and say, 'We're pretty backlogged right now so hang in there But Quayle ran out of time. The 52-year-old grandfather – described as jolly, big-hearted and playful – died on Nov. 24. Quayle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer months after first feeling ill. While he waited for treatment, his health declined, which led him to choose MAID The family's pain emerges as numbers reported on radiation therapy reveal that only 75 per cent of patients in B.C. are receiving it within the recommended 28-day benchmark — lower than the 77 per cent in May when the province started sending patients to the U.S. for radiation due to long waits in B.C. The province has hired 61 oncologists and 27 radiation therapists since April. The health minister says those waiting longer than the benchmarks for radiation are being prioritized. “Those numbers — the people waiting 28 days are going to fall — because there are fewer people now on the waitlist,” said Dix Tuesday.   Here's how much more it's expected to cost to feed a family of 4 in Canada next year https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/here-s-how-much-more-it-s-expected-to-cost-to-feed-a-family-of-4-in-canada-next-year-1.6675985 In 2022, a report estimated the overall food price increases would be between five to seven per cent — the latest data from Statistics Canada pegs the food inflation rate at 5.9 per cent. In the latest edition of the annual report, the authors believe the overall rate of inflation will be lower in 2024, falling to somewhere between 2.5 and 4.5 per cent. According to Charlebois, things are "much calmer now," which could result in more deals and potentially some price wars between the big grocers. "Margins are going to be everything," he said. "And because consumers don't have any money now, grocers will be fighting for our business." Over the next year, Charlebois believes grocery stores will be offering more incentives to consumers like loyalty programs and deals to entice people. One of the tactics used is selling items at a loss, which brings the customer through the grocer's doors, but then the store would increase the prices for other items, hoping the consumer will buy those as well, he explained.   One way to save money on groceries… no more cantaloupes   Death toll rises to five in cantaloupe salmonella outbreak, as cases almost double https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/death-toll-rises-to-five-in-cantaloupe-salmonella-outbreak-as-cases-almost-double-1.6678564 Five people have died in a salmonella outbreak linked to Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes sold in six provinces. "The appellant [Szezepaniak] says that IH is required to respect her exercise of her Charter rights," an appeal board panel wrote in a Nov. 20 decision. "The implication is that in order to respect her decision IH must not take any steps that hold the appellant accountable for the consequences of that decision. Having the right to make a decision, and your right to do so acknowledged, or respected, is not the same as being held responsible for the consequences." in other words, the decision says, Interior Health didn't challenge Szezekpaniak's right to refuse the vaccine, but it did hold her accountable for the fact that choice left her unable to work under provincial law.
