Last week, the U.S. Senate vote to pass Senator Tim Kaine's resolution to end the state of emergency that allows U.S. President Donald Trump to issue tariffs on Canadian goods. President Trump's stated reason for the tariffs is that the fentanyl flowing into the United States from Canada “constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat.” The number he's been citing is 43 pounds for the fiscal year 2024.Globe reporters Kathryn Blaze Baum, Colin Freeze and Andrea Woo looked into that number and found that the White House has been using misleading data to justify tariffs on Canada. Today, Kathryn is on the show to explain what their investigation found, how much fentanyl seized in the U.S. last year can actually be attributed to Canada, and what kind of impact the Senate resolution could have on the trade war.Questions? President Trump says the US is in direct talks with Iran over the country's nuclear ambitions. Speaking next to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office, the President said a meeting was scheduled for Saturday involving people at a "very high level". He warned it would be a "very bad day for Iran" if no agreement was reached. The President also doubled down on his threats of further tariffs against China, opening the possibility they could go as high as 104%. According to new reports this week, Donald Trump is preparing to cut Elon Musk loose a lot sooner than expected. Politico says that Trump has been informing his Cabinet members that Musk will not be around much longer, and the speculation is that it is because he has become incredibly toxic to the Republican Party. But Musk's toxicity isn't Trump's main problem, and he'll soon find out that HE is the on driving things down. After Democratic Governor Janet Mills of Maine went against Donald Trump's order about transgender athletes, the Social Security Administration cancelled vital contracts with the state to operate offices. Leland Dudek, the acting administrator of Social Security, personally ordered staffers to cancel the contracts while admitting that this would increase fraud and screw over parents of newborns seeking to get Social Security numbers, but he did it anyway to punish Mills for going against Trump. Leaked emails have confirmed all of this, and now there are growing demands for Dudek to be removed. The latest rounds of polling data have confirmed that Donald Trump's approval rating has hit rock bottom, and will likely get even worse as the weeks tick by. Trump's overall approval rating is NEGATIVE 14 points, and his handling of issues like the economy and trade negotiations get even worse marks. And for the first time, a majority of voters are not happy with aspects of Trump's immigration policies, marking a stark difference from just a few weeks ago.
