President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States and South Korea had "pretty much finalized" a deal on trade. His comments came at a dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, after a lavish welcome and gift-giving ceremony where Trump was awarded the country's highest award. The two allies unveiled a deal in late July under which Seoul would avoid the worst of U.S. tariffs on its imports.Hurricane Melissa is making its way across Cuba on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm, a day after making landfall in Jamaica as one of the region's strongest storms on record. On today's podcast:1) Top trade negotiators for the US and China said they came to terms on a range of contentious points, setting the table for leaders Donald Trump and Xi Jinping to finalize a deal and ease trade tensions that have rattled global markets. After two days of talks in Malaysia wrapped up Sunday, a Chinese official said the two sides reached a preliminary consensus on topics including export controls, fentanyl and shipping levies. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking later in an interview with CBS News, said Trump’s threat of 100% tariffs on Chinese goods “is effectively off the table” and he expected the Asian nation to make “substantial” soybean purchases as well as offer a deferral on sweeping rare earth controls.2) President Trump said he didn’t anticipate meeting with Canada “for a while” as he continued to stew over a TV advertisement by the province of Ontario that criticized his tariff regime. Trump in recent days has said he was increasing the tariff on goods from Canada by 10% over the ad, which features excerpts of former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford had said he would stop airing the ad after the weekend, but Trump has expressed frustration that the Canadian leader didn’t move to immediately pull the commercial, which has aired during US broadcasts of the World Series.3) As the US government shutdown stumbles toward the one-month mark, the effects of the standoff between Republicans and Democrats are being felt further away from the Capitol, as flights back up and food aid dwindles. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that travelers will face more flight delays and cancellations in the coming weeks as the continuing shutdown exacerbates the air-traffic controller staffing crunch.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From all angles, the latest headlines have something for everyone. Donald Trump is asking the Department of Justice for roughly $230 million in damages over past investigations—the very same Justice Department he now oversees. The move raises serious conflict-of-interest concerns, as the officials who would approve any payout include some of his former attorneys. Meanwhile, in Houston, Nakia Holmes, the once-prominent owner of the now-shuttered Turkey Leg Hut, was arrested for allegedly hiding a fugitive wanted for aggravated kidnapping—adding to the restaurant’s run of bad headlines. Millions of Americans are facing the very real possibility of losing their food-stamp benefits. Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, states warn that nearly 42 million individuals enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program could see their benefits halted in November if Congress doesn’t act. 230-Million dollars. That's how much Trump wants to be compensated from the Department of Justice for criminally investigating him. Trump says he's owed damages for the alleged Russian interference investigation in the 2016 Presidential election and for the FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago home related to the handling of classified documents. Trump says whatever money he gets he'll give to charity (Ballroom fund perhaps?) Whatever number he wants, he will probably get because Trump and those in his administration trying to stay in his good graces will be responsible for approving a payout.John Rothmann, our presidential historian and political analyst is traveling but may be able to join us depending on his Internet coverage. It has been delayed by one year due to strong opposition from the U.S., Singapore, and other nations, pushing the adoption vote from October 2025 to October 2026. This postponement could further delay implementation until 2030 if additional hurdles arise. The levy aims to fund low- and zero-emission fuels by imposing fees on high-emission shipping (potentially raising $10 billion annually), but critics argued it would disproportionately burden exporters like the U.S., adding up to $150 billion in costs over a decade. She now owes roughly $16,000 on it but can't sell the car because its current market value has dropped below that amount due to the post-pandemic decline in used car prices.
