When you hear the word “warrior,” what comes to mind? Maybe the movie Gladiator? The WWF's Ultimate Warrior? The latest UFC champion? Now, when you hear the word “disciple,” what do you think of? Something very different? Maybe something incompatible with the first word? But what if these two terms could fit together? Our guest on this episode believes the words “warrior disciple” go hand in hand for the man following Christ, and, in fact, can be a catalyst for seeing men's lives transformed by the Gospel. Scott Roberts is a dynamic Christian leader and writer. He is the author of the men's ministry book Warrior Disciple. Scott is passionate about empowering men to live boldly and fearlessly for the Lord Jesus Christ. He is also a devotional and article writer for Impactus. As a church elder, teacher, and men's ministry leader, Scott is dedicated to helping men grow in their faith and embrace their calling as disciples of Christ, and he's developed a great new resource to do just that. In this podcast, Dean and Scott talk about: What a “warrior disciple” is and why the term is so important The new men's discipleship book Warrior Disciple and how it can be a crucial and intentional tool for ministry to men How men can stand guard against the forces of the enemy and the world Ways to engage men in the church to step up into their God-given roles How Scripture informs a man's spiritual journey The role that discipline plays in a man's faith, marriage/singleness, fatherhood, career, and church life How love, strength, and courage work together in the life of a man Advice for pastors and men's ministry leaders on how to build an intentional model of discipleship for their men Thanks for joining Dean and Scott for this important conversation! https://www.impactus.org/podcast/becoming-a-warrior-disciple/

Where will you be on April 8, 2024? In case that date isn't burned into your brain, it's the day the sun, Earth, and the moon will completely align, creating a total solar eclipse that will sweep over a section of the United States. It will plunge cities around the U.S.—from Austin, Texas, to Buffalo, New York, into darkness for up to four minutes and 27 seconds and, according to our guest today, will be “the greatest science event in human history.” That's because it's going to be one of the most accessible celestial events to happen in recent times: The path of totality crosses some of the most populated areas of the United States, and astro-tourists will flock to places like Texas in droves. Scott Roberts, today's guest, will also be there, guiding a small group of people through the event at a ranch in Leakey, Texas. To be honest, I wasn't planning on traveling for the eclipse, but after interviewing Scott, I started to wonder if I'm missing out: He likens viewing an eclipse to some of his peak life experiences, nearly up there with witnessing childbirth. He's seen four solar eclipses since he started photographing them as a young man, and now he's a kind of eclipse evangelist. Maybe you, like me, didn't make plans to see the eclipse. Or maybe you've had your plans locked in since 2022. Either way, Scott has a nugget of wisdom for you, from how to view your first solar eclipse (hint: just enjoy it) to the reason we should all celebrate the sun's rise every day. He's also an avid Airstreamer and has been traveling around the country in a 1968 Overlander named Barbara Jean after his travel-loving mom. He shared how he downsized to the Airstream lifestyle and how this kind of travel allows him freedom to follow his celestial obsessions. Mike and I had a great time talking to Bill Summers (who was in Herbie Hancock's band The Headhunters)! We talk about various drums, his first meeting with Herbie Hancock, and the famous sound Bill created for one of the best known Jazz songs ever ... called Watermelon Man... Bill even demonstrates for us how the sound was created. About Bill: During the 1990s, Summers played with Los Hombres Calientes along with co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and Jason Marsalis. However, Summers has a much longer musical career, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording. Check out the Headhunters newest album (sections of 4 of the new songs can be heard on our podcast) THE HEADHUNTERS - Speakers in the House released in November 2022: Speakers In The House is the legendary jazz-funk ensemble's first new album in 11 years. Co-lead by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark with support from NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, The Headhunters latest studio effort arrives just in time to celebrate this American music institution's 50th anniversary in 2023, having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic recording, Head Hunters, in 1973. An eight-track set available on Ropeadope Records, highlights from Speakers In The House include the New Orleans' second-line grooves of "Rocking At The Mole House," the world music-influenced jazz-fusion of "Kongo Square" and a modern post-bop re-imagination of the classic Headhunters' composition "Actual Proof," first released on their 1974 album, Thrust. Joining Summers, Clark and Harrison for the recording are keyboardist Stephen Gordon and bassist Reggie Washington plus special guests Jerry Z on organ, One Drop aka Scott Roberts on drums, Fode Sissoko on Kora and Ashlin Parker on trumpet. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site) Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Back in the early 70s, drummer Mike Clark and bassist Paul Jackson were best friends living in East Oakland, playing flatbed gigs at Black Panther rallies, and generally raising hell. Cooking was not their forte, so the barbecue joint next door became a hangout. Mrs. Jones (of Everett and Jones) asked them to write a song to promote the spot, and they came up with the first version of ‘God Made Me Funky.' Bill Summers worked with Jackson at the local record store, and he jumped at an opportunity to open a show for Herbie Hancock in the Bay Area. He got the call to audition for Herbie's band, joining Herbie for the album “Headhunters“ and many more. Hancock took a new turn in the 70s, handpicking a new band and sound that would ‘take some more of the earth and feel a little more tethered.' The result was the first platinum-selling Jazz album in history. The lineup on that first album: Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. Mike Clark replaced Mason afterward, and the lineup continued on several key Herbie Hancock releases such as “Thrust” and “Flood.”Mike Clark and Bill Summers are two of a kind - they share a love for music that never dies. The pair kept The Headhunters alive, releasing two albums “Survival of the Fittest” in 1975 and “Straight From The Gate” in 1977, with Herbie as a featured guest. The chemistry between them is undeniable: They have persevered for over 40 years through industry setbacks, the death of band members, and more, to stay true to their mission with the same energy and zeal that the music demands. “We're not in a gym, this isn't a competition… this is art. What Bill and I and The Headhunters do is experience the moment and explore. After the count, we're in that moment, and there is no other. This is an act of passion, of love for humanity, and for our planet.” -Mike Clark“We live this every day. We have some secrets to give to the youth of the world. We're not musicians, we are physicians - we heal people.” - Bill Summers11 years after their last release, The Headhunters are set to release “Speakers In The House,” a new full-length album featuring Summers, Clark, NEA Jazz master Donald Harrison, Stephen Gordon, bassist Reggie Washington, and organist Jerry Z. The album also features Scott Roberts and Fode Sissoko on kora. The Headhunters spirit is alive and well on the album, which fuses the band's African and New Orleans influences with their ever-present technical jazz-funk, rooted in music history and growing in the present moment. ‘We've always made a statement as The Headhunters, and I'm looking at our longevity. Every time we've dropped notes on the wax, it has value and can influence people and change lives.” - Bill Summers“Speakers In The House” is set for release on November 4, 2022.Lean more about Lyte.Find more great podcasts from Osiris Media, the leading storyteller in music. By connecting to the energy center of your heart, filling it with gratitude and then expanding the energy field around your heart, you become a superconductor and magnet for higher and higher levels of abundance and joy. So, stop what you're doing, grab your seat and get ready to raise your vibration!
Breath is the key to creating and controlling life. Breath is absorbing the universal energy that flows and circulates everywhere at all times and using it to fuel your mind and body. Your physical body is also an energetic body that can be thought of as a rechargeable battery. And breath is one of the sources of energy to recharge your battery. Other sources are less beneficial in the long run. Things like caffeine or other stimulants can stimulate you in a negative, detrimental way. Stimulants aggravate the nervous system and increase heart rate as well as your rate of breathing. These give a temporary feeling of increased energy, but they are not REAL energy. They're a temporary agitation that feels like energy, but are in fact scattered, erratic waves of disturbance that ultimately lower your overall energy and can have long-lasting negative effects on your overall energy management. As driven individuals, we are often looking for ways to maximize our efforts and our potential for creating success. We look to optimize our health with hacks and external technology or supplements. However, we already have the ability to exponentially increase our energy, our productivity, our creativity and our ability to attract much more wealth without going outside of ourselves. That power comes from our breath. We are physical expressions of divine, universal energy and our bodies are rechargeable batteries that can be plugged into pure breath or plugged into the energy of chaos. That chaos appears to give us energy, but actually drains us and takes our energy rather than keeping us connected to ourselves and one another. But, the amazing thing about breath is that breath is pure energy and has a rhythm like music. Calm or chaotic. Smooth or erratic. Uplifting or enraging. Calming or depressing. You can learn to harness your breath and create your own, curated playlist that soothes you when you are filled with anxiety, lifts you up when you feel sluggish or uninspired or energizes you to take the stage and share your story with the world. Learning to use your breath properly is a super-power that gives you access to your limitless potential. Using breath as a tool, your brain's 100 billion neurons, that store information and communicate with each other (fire), begin making new synaptic connections (wire) in your neocortex (involved in higher-order brain functions such as sensory perception, cognition, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning and language). And when you begin flooding your brain with oxygen, using this powerful breathing technique, those billions of neurons become super-charged and capable of creating entirely new neural pathways and entirely new levels of thought, perception and ability. Your brain becomes charged with limitless energy and becomes more and more malleable. In this state, you can begin creating new realities and new identities that become hard-wired into the neural network of your brain. This powerful breath meditation is designed to teach you how to harness the power of your breath so you can begin taking control of your life and tapping into your limitless potential!
