When a 9-year-old girl vanishes without a trace in 1984, a rural Canadian town is left reeling. Law enforcement quickly zeroes in on a suspect—a quiet, socially awkward neighbor. But as the case unfolds, doubts about his guilt emerge again and again. Decades later, Detective Sergeant Steve takes on the cold case. With the power of modern DNA technology, everything once thought to be fact is suddenly back in play. Will the truth finally come to light? Detective Sergeant Steve is a seasoned investigator with 28 years of service in the Toronto Police Service, where he currently leads the Homicide Cold Case Unit—home to the largest caseload of unsolved cases in Canada. In addition to overseeing the Cold Case Unit, Steve also manages the Forensic Video Unit and played a key role in the establishment of the Missing Persons Unit, guiding its development from the ground up. Throughout his distinguished career, Steve has held various positions in specialized units, including the Drug Squad, Major Crime Unit, Major Projects, ROPE (Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement) Squad, and the Hold Up Squad. Notably, while in the Hold Up Squad, he was instrumental in solving the high-profile multi-national bank robbery series known as the "Vaulter Bandit." A graduate of Brock University, Steve holds a major in Political Science and a minor in Business Entrepreneurship. His early career interests in law enforcement were sparked by his work with the Canada Border Services Agency during his time at university. Why was a Toronto suspect released on bail after being charged with terrorism-related hate crimes against Jews?

On Monday March 17, Toronto Police Services announced that they arrested and laid 29 charges against a suspect allegedly behind a spree of hate-motivated attacks on Toronto's Jewish community in 2024—and then, revealed a judge had released him on bail. Amir Arvahi Azar, 32, was arrested on Jan. 11, 2025, in the Willowdale neighbourhood of Toronto. He was kept in custody for two months, until this week's release order. Police highlighted the fact that they brought three “very rare” hate-speech charges against the suspect, including advocating genocide against Jews, wilful promotion of genocide and public incitement of hatred. The Ontario attorney general's office had to agree to lay these charges, but went further than that and tagged the charges as “terrorist activities” under the Criminal Code, opening the door to a life sentence if convicted. There is a publication ban on revealing too many details about the case. All this has led Jewish leaders to ask: why was the suspect released on bail at all? On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we speak to Rivka Campbell, executive director of Beth Tikvah Synagogue, whose premises were hit by arson in April 2024, and also with Guidy Mamann of the Tiferet Israel congregation, where a pro-Israel sign was torched in August. In our thirtieth episode of Unsolved Canadian Mysteries, Christina Koutsi, Dylan Fairman and Kenton de Jong discuss the disappearance and subsequent murders of several men from Toronto's Gay Village during the early 2010s. The Toronto Police Service were unequipped to handle these murders and were unfamiliar with the LGBTQA+ community they were taking part in. All signs pointed to a man named Bruce McArthur, but McArthur was a senior citizen, who landscaped for a living and volunteered as Santa Claus in the malls. However, as the investigation continued, more of McArthur's life became known to the authorities. From a tough childhood, a messy divorce, bankruptcy, a troubled son, and more than one report of him being violent or aggressive, the police began to wonder if McArthur was involved, and if so, what happened to these missing men. As more and more men went missing, the search continued and the answer seemed further and further from the norm. Come learn about a Canadian serial killer like no other!

Toronto police have arrested and charged three people—including two pro-Israel protesters—in connection with a violent incident at a weekly community rally in Toronto that saw an 88-year-old Jewish volunteer beaten and thrown to the ground. It happened on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the event held on Bathurst Street at Sheppard Avenue West. Video from the attack shows a car come to a stop beside the crowd of approximately 100 people waving Israeli flags. A young passenger exits the car, scuffles with the senior citizen, beats him, then picks him up and slams him into the street. He fell centimetres away from the wheels of a Toronto city transit bus that happened to be stopped at a red light. The senior was badly cut and bruised, and had to be taken to hospital with what police have called "non-life-threatening injuries". Police have charged three people, but will not be releasing more details while the investigation is underway. However, the organizer of the pro-Israel rally tells The CJN Daily that, aside from the attacker, police charged two members of his group, too, after some people reacted violently when they saw what had been done to the elderly gentleman. Guidy Mamann joins the show to explain what exactly happened—and why he won't cancel the weekly rallies he helps organize. With the synagogue's shattered front glass windows still boarded up with plywood sheets and an emergency fundraiser underway to repair the damage, Toronto's century-old Pride of Israel congregation opened its doors to host a large community solidarity rally on the evening of July 31. More than a dozen federal, provincial and municipal politicians, as well as a senior Toronto police inspector, spoke to the crowd of 1,500 and pledged to work harder to stop the wave of antisemitic hate that began after Oct. 7, yet has intensified in recent weeks. Just in the past few days, there have been dozens of incidents of vandalism, graffiti and arson targeting Toronto-area institutions. So it was no surprise that tensions ran high at the solidarity rally, with organizers trying to prevent pro-Palestinian protesters from disturbing the event—while also keeping guests inside from being rude to the invited politicians… with varying degrees of success. On the The CJN Daily, hear the crowd boo during the remarks by Mayor Olivia Chow and Liberal MP Ya'ara Saks, hear from an uninvited pro-Palestinian Jewish protestor, Gur Tsabar, and from others speakers—including Ontario's Solicitor General Michael Kerzner; newly elected Conservative MP Don Stewart; Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, the prime minister's new special advisor on antisemitism; and Melissa Lantsman, deputy leader of the federal Conservative party—who pledged their solidarity and demanded that Jewish rights be protected. The entire spectrum of emotions always serves us. One of our challenges, I feel, is that we hold on to them, and of course, they become dense, sit in our tissues, and create illness of one sort or another. So, mindfulness has allowed me to understand the role of emotions and that they're all quite sacred.   Thoughts On Breathing Breathwork is an incredible tool, and if that's all one has, it does incredible things for our bodies—not only emotionally but physiologically. If you hold the right nostril down and just breathe in and release through the mouth, the parasympathetic system is responsive to that.   It can help calm, bring things down, and lower anxiety. So whether we're outside or we're in a room, if we're able to use our breathing, it does wonders for us, from mindfulness, for the presence of mind and body Bullying Story I was a school liaison officer in Scarborough and worked with my partner. On February 11, Super Bowl LVIII takes place in Las Vegas On February 16, Taylor Swift's Eras tour resumes in Melbourne If Travis Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs win against the Baltimore Ravens tomorrow and are in the Super Bowl, is it likely Taylor Swift will fly 11 hours and 30 minutes from Tokyo to Las Vegas immediately following her February 10 performance, to be in attendance at the SB supporting boyfriend Travis Kelce in Vegas, February 11 (even in a private jet) and then turn around to fly 16 hours and 48 minutes from Las Vegas to Melbourne to prep for the resumption of the February, 16 Eras tour date? Is this what entertainment world superstars might do, or is it too big an ask, even for love? Bio My name is Isaiah Henry and I am 28 years old. Born and raised in Pickering ON. Fell in love with athletics at a young age and was able to take my talents to Wilfrid Laurier University where I received an athletic scholarship and was fortunate to become a dual athlete while playing Rugby and Football. Upon graduating I pursued a career in long enforcement where I gained positions at Metrolinx as Special Constable and then the Toronto Police Service as a Police Officer. In terms of my investing career I started in 2017 after seeing an ad in the local paper about a new pre con project in Toronto. After the condo I was pretty uninvolved in real estate until 2019 where I picked up a condo townhouse in oshawa ON. I began learning more about REinvesting and started taking on long distance projects in Windsor, Sudbury and Timmins. Currently I am focusing on Timmins ON where the majority of my portfolio is located. I manage all my areas remotely and have created a property management company to help serve other investors in the area. Some may even call me the Mayor of T-Town . Going forward I would like to keep working with more JV partners and continue to scale into small multi family properties in Timmins ON. I would also like to continue to grow my property management company as well as some of the other active businesses I have on the go.
