Dr. Kari Nixon studies the intersection of death, disease, and community, and how illness impacts identity. It's a topic she pursued without even realizing that she herself was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which despite the flashy true crime narratives, often manifests in much more subtle ways than you might expect. New parents are often encouraged to ask for help. But the source of that help, and how we provide it — whether it's physical or emotional - has changed drastically over the years. Instead of turning to close friends and family, many modern mothers turn to social media – sometimes with unexpectedly harsh results. Jessica Clements and Kari Nixon, co-authors of Optimal Motherhood and Other Lies Facebook Told Us, join us to talk about modern motherhood, how groups meant to support and uplift mothers somehow tear them down — and how we can do better.

Welcome to the fourth reading of the Cornhill magazine. My name is Owen and I have been assisting Dr. Kari Nixon by reading the fiction portions of the 1862 bound annual edition. This is a nice collection of literature that connects present day folks to the Victorians of 160 years ago. This first reading is chapter of the Mary Elizabeth Braddon novel, "Lady Audley's Secret." The second and third readings are of chapter two. In Chapter 2 we meet George Talboys, and few members of the vessel he is sailing home to England on. This instance shows us that people of every generation were racked with anxiety and worries about the future. Both George and his copassenger are returning home after a time abroad earning money to bring home. Money has also always been a stressor, how can we eat without money? How could we afford our homes without money? Where can we get money. All of these questions are answered in this reading from the Victorian angle. I am excited to narrate something from to those rich, Victorian days gone by. I hope that you all enjoy the next fifteen minutes. Hello Lovely Vicies and Victors, Im glad you found your way over here to the Victorian Periodical Parade Welcome to the first reading of the Cornhill magazine. My name is Owen Curtiss and I will be assisting Dr. Kari Nixon by reading the fiction portions of the 1862 bound annual edition. This is a nice collection of literature that connects present day folks to the Victorians of a 160 years ago. Here Kari reads an article from the May issue of the 1862 edition of the Cornhill Magazine. She breaks down what the writings mean, why they are in general critiquing their peers, and when a paragraph is a veiled joke. Next I will be going back to the beginning of said May issue; where the first reading will be a segment of a Thackeray novel called The Adventures of Phillip On His Way Through The World and Thackeray was the editor of the Cornhill magazine. That is why, dear listener, his novel got to be publisher here in the early years of the magazine. People often would buy the magazine subscription so that they could read the book throughout the year. Said novel would be broken up into installments, with the rest of the magazine being made up of other stories or articles which would be a bonus for those who bought the magazine to read the novel. I have heard of other such publications that present a novel over the span of a year or so and I have been intrigued by them. I have actually purchased one such magazine, made up of short stories, in the podcasts inaugural summer. So I am excited to read something similar to those rich, victorian days gone by. Since we are starting these readings off, alongside Kari's article and breakdowns in May, some of you dear listeners will be petrified to hear that we will be starting off in chapter 35 of The Adventures of Phillip On His Way Through The World with Res Angusta Domi, next time. Now, we'll see how far we get in fifteen minutes. I hope you enjoy, hobey ho lets go. Hello Vickies, This content has been a long time coming as it is from a nearly 3 hour recording session, with so many good things going on! Very sorry for the wait! Today we get to know the fantastic Kari Nixon PhD, even more than we already had. We learn about her beginnings as a scholar, a few of her accolades and travels. We learn more of her childhood as well as a few tidbits about mentors of hers. Get ready for some belly laughs as well as some deep dives into the meta of podcasting, producing this podcast, as we as our relationships. Getting to know the engineer know as Owen Curtiss is a complex act, but Kari gets the deets on a few topics that are close to Owen. Listen along as Kari asks Owen, "Why are you the right person to support the Victorian Periodical Parade?" We also talk a wee little bit about a magical camp that stands tall amongst the Concordia Language Villages. That camp is called Skogfjorden! A norwegian language and culture immersion camp. Now that either of us have been, we cannot avoid references to it, or memories of it. Reach out if you can't find them at: http://www.concordialanguagevillages.org/youth-languages/norwegian-language-village/our-site This was supposed to be a transition episode between our live readings on Facebook, and Youtube into the "audio only" podcast version of the show. Turns out Owen is putting out the video versions of the podcast episodes as well, due to his love for the facial reactions, falling equipment, and self care habits found in these recordings sessions. Also, we didn't really talk about the podcast that much in this interview anyway. Let us know if you enjoyed this. Content warning: In this story there is infanticide, and reference to the murder of an infant, we do not condone this, we are merely reacting to the story as it was written 160 years ago. Either prepare you ears or hit skip three times after we say, "The Curious Case of Susan Styleds." In today's episode Dr. Kari Nixon breaks down The Curious Case of Susan Styles written by Cathrine Lord, under the pen name of Lucy Hardy. Did you notice the reference to a Hardy in the story? It took me until I edited to story to notice who was named Hardy. Send us a message @VictorianParade if you know who it is, and you'll become a praised listener with the option of stickers, postcards, and more! We talk about Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, and characters in the Victorian Era and why they are important. At the end Kari stumps Owen with some riddles. Are you starter that Owen and Kari? Let us know your answers on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, search for The Victorian Periodical Parade. We hope you enjoyed learning somethings about the Victorian Era! Have a great. Mary Mallon, known to history as Typhoid Mary, immigrated from Northern Ireland to New York City at age 15, around 1883. She found work as a cook, a well paying job for an immigrant woman and worked for number of different families in the early 20th Century. In March 1907, civil engineer George Soper burst into the kitchen of the home where she was cooking and told her that she was spreading typhoid via her cooking. He demanded samples of her feces, urine, and blood to test. Mallon, who believed she was in perfect health, chased him away with a carving fork. Mallon spent most of the rest of her life in quarantine, on North Brother Island, forced to give regular stool and urine samples. She was briefly released, but knowing no other skills, cooked again and was forced back into quarantine. Although Mallon was the first person in the US identified as a healthy carrier of typhoid, by the time of her second quarantine in 1915, many healthy carriers had been identified, more than 400 in New York alone. None of the other healthy carriers was forcibly confined, even the other cooks or those who caused more cases and more deaths than Mallon did. In this episode, Kelly briefly tells the history of Mary Mallon's quarantines, and interviews Kari Nixon, an assistant professor of English at Whitworth University, who teaches medical humanities and Victorian literature. Dr. Nixon is author of the 2021 book Quarantine Life from Cholera to Covid-19: What Pandemics Teach Us about Parenting, Work, Life, and Communities from the 1700s to Today. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. In this episode Poorva talks to Kari Nixon, a medical humanist, author and assistant professor at Whitworth University about how pandemics shape us and our culture. They talk about the cognitive dissonance in accepting the threat of the pandemics and how we cling to the very idea that diseases originate and play out somewhere else. They also examine how Covid-9 will inform our culture and future in the coming decades.
