Justin's got the week off, so Seth steps in as co-host and the conversation does not disappoint. Doug and Seth dig into a Reddit question that sent them both deep into the nostalgia rabbit hole: of all the computer games you played between 1985 and 2010, what's the one you still think about today? Seth goes back to the PC port of Final Fantasy VII — the game that defined the RPG genre for a generation of players who couldn't afford a PlayStation — and StarCraft, the game that proved the internet was both a gift and a curse once Korean players started annihilating everyone on Battle.net. Doug lands on Diablo, Counter Strike, Half-Life, and Team Fortress from what he describes as the best summer of his life, plus Warcraft II and the legendary dorm-vs-dorm Counter Strike leaderboard that consumed an entire semester. Seth adds Morrowind and the Halo 2 university network wars, including the top-ranked player named Mixomatosis who turned out to live three doors down and was simply a different kind of person. The gaming conversation rolls naturally into a deep dive on Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, and hero shooter culture — the difference between quick match and competitive, the rage of random teammates, why role-locking exists, and why you absolutely should not be trying out a new character in ranked. But first: Doug's mom has a long history of purging spices from the family pantry, and it explains a lot about his childhood. From there Doug and Seth debate overrated recipes (the dump-and-bake casserole situation has gotten out of hand), wage war over cottage cheese, and discover halloumi together in real time. Underrated picks include millionaire shortbread and candied pecans — two things that deserve far more attention. Plus fair food: dirty, suspect, and somehow perfect. A quick Clair Obscure Expedition 33 check-in leads into the episode's new game: AI or LinkedIn? Doug reads posts and Seth has to guess whether each one is a genuine LinkedIn post or AI generated. The results are both funnier and sadder than expected — especially the guy who timed his lunch at four minutes and 37 seconds because what isn't measured doesn't improve. This week's recommendations: Seth — Taskmaster (free on YouTube, 21 seasons). Five comedians, bizarre tasks, Greg Davies and Alex Horne hosting. One of the best shows you haven't watched yet. Doug — The Backrooms (A24). Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons based on the viral liminal space internet lore. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars. One of A24's highest-grossing films. Go see it. Plus: what even is SCP? Seth explains, and the answer sends Doug down a rabbit hole he didn't budget time for.   Subscribe: youtube.com/mindgappodcast  Join the Discord: https://discord.gg/T3HwyEw5v7  Listen everywhere you get podcasts  Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mindgappodcast Merch on Redbubble: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/67768184

#143 Hoge bomen vangen weinig wind: het Nederlandse belastingstelsel

Studio Tegengif

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2026 61:37

The Apocalypse Players — a Call of Cthulhu actual play podcast

In which a moment occurs between times, hidden in the spaces alongside greater imaginings of certain plateaus, made possible by daemonic beings and introduced by a familiar, once Kingsport based, antiquarian… A modern Call of Cthulhu Scenario by Joseph Chance Cast: Josephine Arundel & Felicity Blake – Belinda Cornish Chris Caldwell & Jonathan Tatler – Dan Wheeler Max Davenant & Tam Philips – Danann McAleer Charlie Westenra & Luther Eliot Redmark – Dominic Allen Keeper of Arcane Lore – Joseph Chance   CW: This podcast contains mature themes, strong language and cosmic horror. As ever, human discretion is advised.   The Apocalypse Players is an actual play (or live play) TTRPG podcast focused on horror tabletop roleplaying games. Think Dimension 20 or Critical Role, but fewer dragons, more eldritch horrors, and more British actors taking their roleplaying very seriously (most of the time). We primarily play the Chaosium RPG Call of Cthulhu, but have also been known to dabble with other systems, most of which can be found on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/apocalypseplayers We now have a free Discord server where you can come and worship at the altar of the Apocalypse, play Call of Cthulhu online, and meet like-minded cultists who will be only too eager to welcome you into the fold. New sacrifices - oops - we mean players are always welcome. 1. Through the Bright Works Project, SCP wiki staff are removing the vast majority of works created by AdminBright (aka Dr. Bright, aka TheDuckman). SCP-029, -050, -161, -528, -573, -693, -721, -834, -894, -1337, -1590, -1777, -2976, -100-J, and -5555-J have already been deleted from the wiki. Those numbers will eventually be made available to be recycled by other authors writing replacement works. Since the next Main Series episode on the docket, SCP-161, was among those removed, we will skip it for now. To learn more about the full plan with Bright's work on the wiki and the reasoning behind it: https://05command.wikidot.com/semi-public:bright-works-remove-and-counter To learn more about why this is happening in the first place, I'd recommend this video by SCP author and former wiki staff member Dr. Cimmerian (CW: Discussion about irl sexual harassment involving minors): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4m5fL1k73E 2. We're also available on YouTube Music! Have been for awhile now. Like and subscribe and all that guff: https://www.youtube.com/@scpdatapodcast/podcasts 3. I'm planning on permanently leaving Facebook soon. Since our Facebook page gets the least amount of interaction of any of our socials (like, basically none), I'll likely just delete it as well. You can still find us on Twitter, Tumblr, Patreon, and our website (links below). We may add other socials in the future. 4. Prioritize Fun! What should you do with the time between getting accepted to medical school and orientation week? Fallon Jung, Anna Royer, Jonah Albrecht, and Charis Edwards tell their stories about finding out they got in (including one bathroom cry session and a Colorado NICU celebration), what they actually did to prepare, and why you absolutely shouldn’t pre-study. If you’re headed to medical school next year, this episode is basically your older sibling giving you the honest advice nobody else will—like why floor time in windowless study rooms is underrated, how to fill your cup before classes start, and the surprising truth about how much fun you can still have during M1 year. You’ll hear why these students think the admissions committee already believes you can do this, practical tips on setting up your study space without buying every resource known to humankind, and honest talk about mental health, sleep, and remembering why you wanted to be a doctor in the first place. The crew plus show photographer David Lee also debuts a med school edition of “That Escalated Quickly,” a party game that somehow involves electrocuting your brain’s pleasure centers, peppermint ice cream debates, and the very specific hell of planning to study instead of actually studying. Whether you’re pre-med, pre-PA, or just curious what actually happens before med school starts, hang out with your SCP friends who genuinely want you to succeed—and who aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves along the way.
