Today's True Weird Stuff - Forbidden Island   In the early 1900s, a woman known as Typhoid Mary was identified as patient zero for a series of typhoid outbreaks in New York. As a result, she was forced into quarantine on North Brother Island and lived the rest of her life in exile. Not only was the island a quarantine zone, it was the location of the General Slocum steamboat disaster, the deadliest event to happen in New York before 9/11. Today, North Brother Island has been abandoned for over 60 years, and travel to the island is strictly forbidden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

IN THIS EPISODE: On September 18, 1973, Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter (later to become President Carter) filed a report with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena claiming he'd seen a UFO. (The Jimmy Carter UFO Sighting) *** While most pregnancies go off without a hitch, once in a while there are abnormalities – and sometimes those abnormalities aren't with the delivery, but with the pregnancy itself. We'll look at some bizarre real stories of pregnancies that gave almost everyone involved a shock! (Perplexing Pregnancies) *** Stories of monsters have been told for thousands of years – but there are a few cryptids that we had no idea about until relatively recently. We'll look at a few monsters that we didn't know about until just a few years ago! (Modern Monsters) *** You know what they say about a woman scorned. We'll look at the most murderous wives in history – maybe it'll give some of the men listening an idea of what to avoid in a relationship! (Murderous Wives) *** Most people have at least a passing knowledge of who Typhoid Mary was, and how she spread typhoid to others while being asymptomatic herself – but the full story is a lot sadder than you've been told. Renowned for exploring industrial landscapes and abandoned architecture, Christopher Payne delved into the forgotten corners of America's built environment for projects like Asylum and North Brother Island, to the latest, most advanced technologies that build the country now in his latest book, Made In America. What goes on in a shipyard that builds nuclear submarines? Chris has seen and photographed it. From the mailbag, photographing a stranger changes Steve Reeves' outlook on life, Jeremy Durham on 'what we do,' Neil Ford is pondering the question, 'why post on social media,' and Michael Mixon is coming out of a creative lull, though has some words of quiet genius when it comes to why we make pictures. Happy Spooky Wednesday, everyone! For the second week of 2023's True Crime January, we're talking about Typhoid Mary. Mary Mallon was a dirty, dirty girl. Literally. She didn't wash her hands. She is largely regarded as the first asymptotic person with typhoid in the USA. And as a result, people got sick. And when she was told she was making people sick, her response was to dip. After being chased around the New York area, she was found out and brought to North Brother Island... kicking and screaming. And that attitude may have kept her hanging around the island long after her passing. What do you think? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leftofskeptic/support

This week we take a look at the abandoned North Brother Island in NYC. Throughout the late 1800s through early 1900s, the island was home to Riverside Hospital. A hospital used to quarantine patients with contagious diseases and other ailments. With that aside, the island saw its fair share of unfortunate events that took place along it shores. One being the deadliest maritime accident in US history. In addition, this island housed the infamous “Typhoid Mary” until her dying day. With all these factors, it's no wonder North Brother Island is considered one of the most haunted places in NYC. Join us this week as we take a dive into the lovely East River to examine these claims.

Typhoid Mary - real name Mary Mallon - was the first ever asymptomatic carrier of typhoid to be identified. A cook for wealthy New York families, her name was published on 15th June, 1907, when sanitation engineer George Soper exposed her as the source of numerous outbreaks of the disease across the City. Of particular concern was Mallon's habit of preparing fresh peach ice cream for her clients on a Sunday. “No better way could be found for a cook to cleanse her hands of microbes and infect a family,” Soper concluded. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly ask if Mallon was treated unfairly by the authorities due to her class and circumstances; explain how she came to be quarantined - twice - on North Brother Island; and question how she possibly found herself working back in kitchens, preparing food, even after her reputation as a carrier of typhoid had been well publicised…  Further Reading: • ‘THE WORK OF A CHRONIC TYPHOID GERM DISTRIBUTOR' (George A. Mary Mallon, known to history as Typhoid Mary, immigrated from Northern Ireland to New York City at age 15, around 1883. She found work as a cook, a well paying job for an immigrant woman and worked for number of different families in the early 20th Century. In March 1907, civil engineer George Soper burst into the kitchen of the home where she was cooking and told her that she was spreading typhoid via her cooking. He demanded samples of her feces, urine, and blood to test. Mallon, who believed she was in perfect health, chased him away with a carving fork. Mallon spent most of the rest of her life in quarantine, on North Brother Island, forced to give regular stool and urine samples. She was briefly released, but knowing no other skills, cooked again and was forced back into quarantine. Although Mallon was the first person in the US identified as a healthy carrier of typhoid, by the time of her second quarantine in 1915, many healthy carriers had been identified, more than 400 in New York alone.  None of the other healthy carriers was forcibly confined, even the other cooks or those who caused more cases and more deaths than Mallon did. In this episode, Kelly briefly tells the history of Mary Mallon's quarantines, and interviews Kari Nixon, an assistant professor of English at Whitworth University, who teaches medical humanities and Victorian literature. Dr. Nixon is author of the 2021 book Quarantine Life from Cholera to Covid-19: What Pandemics Teach Us about Parenting, Work, Life, and Communities from the 1700s to Today. There are two mysterious islands in the East River with a human population of zero. They are restricted. No human being lives there.  One of these islands has been witness to some of the most dire and dramatic moments in New York City history. North Brother Island sits near the tidal strait known as Hell Gate, a once-dangerous whirlpool which wrecked hundreds of ships and often deposited the wreckage on the island's quiet shore. In the 1880s the island was chosen as the new home for Riverside Hospital, a quarantine hospital for New Yorkers with smallpox, tuberculosis and many more contagious illnesses. Greg takes the reigns in this show and leads you through the following episodes in the story of North Brother Island: -- A  bizarre incident -- involving a body found in the waters off the island -- which first put the place on the map; -- The tragic crash of the General Slocum steamship; -- The complicated struggles of Mary Mallon, aka Typhoid Mary; -- The implausible tale of a 1950s rehab center for teenage drug addicts. boweryboyshistory.com   Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/boweryboys See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Individuals, organizations, companies, and municipalities should strive for purpose and meaning to achieve a highly regarded reputation and significance. Those with principles and integrity wish to make lasting, meaningful contributions to society. Anyone can and should make efforts to enhance those around them. If you can be remembered as a kind, caring individual, then you have achieved your purpose. If one's endeavors, though, have a positive impact beyond one's lifetime, stretching into generations, you can achieve greatness and perhaps a bit of immortality. Other times, however, despite best efforts and intentions, a heavy fog will seep in, eroding, slowly erasing, and eventually leaving little trace of significant accomplishments, allocating history to obscurity.

Listen in as the Quacks Will and Jon discuss the infamous Typhoid Mary and how her story is revenant today. “Typhoid” Mary Mallon was a cook for many wealthy families in the New York area in the early 1900’s. She was the first identified asymptomatic carrier of Typhoid fever and was responsible for infecting dozens of people with the deadly disease. She was eventually tracked down by George Soper and quarantined on North Brother Island, where after a short release, would eventually spend the rest of her life (over 23 years on the island). She died in 1938 and there are conflicting reports about what happened after she died. The official report is that she was immediately cremated and buried in St Raymond’s cemetery. Another theory says an autopsy revealed infected gallstones in her gallbladder (something the NY dept of health tried to remove but Mary refused) Mary was never truly made to understand her role in the typhoid epidemic of the time period and was locked away and tested on for decades. North Brother Island has a rich history that is still reflected in its abandoned landscape and buildings. This is an island off of New York and now owned by New York. New York City saw the worst tragedy in American history on September 11, 2001. Before that day, the worst tragedy was the sinking of the General Slocum, which has connections to North Brother Island. The island also was home to Riverside Hospital, a quarantine hospital for those suffering from horrible and contagious diseases like small pox. Many died there. And for twenty-three years, Typhoid Mary called this island home. There are rumors that the island is not completely abandoned. Spirits seem to have remained. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of North Brother Island. Moment in Oddity features the noise of planets and This Day in History is by Steven Pappas and features the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Racontour Archive 2008 - 2019

Speaker: Mary Murphy and Sean McMahon Mary Mallon from just outside Cookstown in County Tyrone became infamous in America where she was known as Typhoid Mary. She was correctly identified as the carrier of the organism causing typhoid fever where she spread the disease in her work as a cook. She refused to wash her hands before cooking or to acknowledge her role as a spreader with some 51 people becoming infected by her with three deaths. Born in 1869, she died in 1938 after being confined by authorities for 26 years on North Brother Island in the East River.

Her story reads like a Hollywood film: A woman who seems healthy is quarantined on a remote island off New York City because it’s feared she’s spreading a deadly disease. Mary Mallon – better known as Typhoid Mary -- spent much of her life quarantined on North Brother Island.  So close, but yet so far away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.  She was the first known healthy carrier of typhoid fever. Author Mary Beth Keane penned a novel based on Mary Mallon's life. It's called "Fever," and we're talking with her on this week's Cityscape.
