Today, we revisit a topic that was recommended to us by Dr David Tragen of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital - the perioperative management of the direct oral anticoagulant medications or DOACs. We start with some basic revision of the mechanism of action of the DOACs and their indications before diving more closely into the recommendations for stopping and starting these medications around the time of surgery, and the implications for our anaesthetic. On this episode of the podcast, Sascha talks with Kate Drummond of The Energetic Heart and About Play in Atlanta to learn more about her journey and discuss reality as it relates to regulation. They agree that emotional regulation does not equal submission, doesn't mean entering a non feeling place and doesn't require us to forfeit anger but, rather, offers stable access to deep feelings and the ability to respond rather than react to stimuli. Sascha and Kate talk about how to move toward this aware and sturdy place when you live in a world that is chronically disregulated and reflect on how salient and helpful it feels to do this work in good company, given the degree to which we are bombarded with stimuli today. You can join both Sascha & Kate at their upcoming offering Finding Ease in Times of Struggle (offering release and regulation support) in Atlanta beginning April 14th.

Meet the director of the recently released movie "The Novice" about an obsessive rower and her college team. Lauren rowed for 4 years while at university in Texas. Stars Isabelle Fuhrman and Amy Forsyth with Kate Drummond as the head coach, Charlotte Ubben as the coxswain and Jonathan Cherry as the novice coach. Timestamps 01:50 Lauren Hadaway is the writer and director of the full length feature film, The Novice. She was told to 'write about what you know and a story only you can tell'. Taking the obsessed artist trope and translating it to rowing. A sport characterised by internal drive, grit and ambition. 04:00 Why is the film so dark? Lauren is a sound specialist. Whatever sound effect you choose, what does it add to the story? 07:00 In her first 2k test the scene has the lead character, Alex played by Isabelle Fuhrman, "make love" to her erg - she objectifies herself and the machine. It's a bit like being in love with the erg and the story arc of that initial interest building to obsession before descending into a toxic relationship. 09:00 Rowing is not naturally cinematic 11:40 What cinematic challenges are there to overcome when shooting rowers and rowing? Isabelle and Amy both had to learn to row. Lauren interviewed all the background cast of extras herself. She needed to ensure they were actually rowers. 18:30 Where the rowing isn't quite right.... there are a few places. Shooting 500 frames a second allowed some of the marvellous slow motion shots. 21:00 The crab wrangler.. yes, honestly they had one. 23:00 Filming in a portaloo (porta-potty) And how to film a coxswain close up. The Novice movie is on cinema release 17th December 2021 in USA and shortly afterwards on all streaming services (Prime, Netflix, Apple). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11131464/

From birth through high school, children on Bainbridge Island are presented with an unusually wide variety of fun programs and activities. Learn more about some of those exciting possibilities as Susie Burdick, Executive Director of Kidimu, Liam McEvilly, Program Director of Boys and Girls Club, and Kate Drummond, Teaching Artist at Bainbridge Performing Arts, describe what their organizations have to offer the younger set. In this podcast Susie, Liam and Kate talk, not only about what each of their respective organizations has to offer for our little ones, but how those programs are designed to expand with the children as they age. What fun, to learn that the older children are staying within the familiar programs and spaces and mentoring the younger ones, thus learning new useful skills along the way. Take the Boys and Girls Club, for example: their robust after school program -- now offered at the Coppertop -- covers everything from help with homework to learning yoga in a safe and nurturing environment which serves about 120 children every weekday. Bainbridge Performing Arts' theatre school teaches much more than theatre arts and skills, offering opportunities for role play, teamwork and imaginative play from the ages of 4 to 18 and beyond. And Kidimu is not just a museum for youngsters, but also a varied learning environment for parents, siblings and even brand new babies! Kidimu's website also offers additional resources for the very youngest Islanders. Be sure to watch (and listen) for future periodic BCB podcasts of What's Up Bainbridge for Wee Ones.
