Someone once asked, "Why is Horizon?"And that's exactly what Connor, Matt and Frank are here to...also ask. Welcome back to our Kevin Costner series for Part 2, where we cover Chapter 1. Today we get revenge on Matt for making everyone watched the Postman to bring him Costner's opus: Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, the first 3 glorious hours of what is expected to be a 12 hour, 4-movie franchise (I hear in part 3 we're going to meet the Fire Navi). The first installment in the titular film series, it features an ensemble cast of Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Giovanni Ribisi, with Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower in supporting roles. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars and move directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Sometimes we are lucky enough to even speak with them about their work. And sometimes, they are both a movie star and a movie director. Today that's Julia Stiles, director of Wish You Were Here, now in theaters and available digitally on February 4th. Our B-Sides today include O, The Business of Strangers, and It's a Disaster. Stiles discusses the filmmakers she's worked with in the past and how they influenced her decisions sitting in the director's chair (the best ones “set a tone of calmness” she says), making friends on the South Carolina set of O, and becoming more intentional with the creative choices in her career (including auditioning for Silver Linings Playbook). We also chat about Wish You Were Here, her feature debut as a filmmaker. Stiles mentions guarding against the saccharine to tell “a mature love story.” There's also considerable praise of lead actress Isabelle Fuhrman and her incredible range, as well as a story about calling filmmaker Doug Liman for sailing advice. Speaking of Liman, Dan and Conor take a moment to unpack Nicky Parsons from the Bourne franchise, the efforts(?) of Tony Gilroy, and a crucial line read in Ultimatum that adds so much depth to Stiles' role. Finally, we cover how exactly Stiles got the great Vanessa Carlton and her partner John McCauley to do the score to her film. Early 2000s icons unite! And there is a brief, insightful conversation on why exactly Stiles chose to do all of those Shakespeare adaptations early on in her career. Isabelle Fuhrman got her big break when she was cast as the titular character in the horror film The Orphan. Not to be undone, she quickly followed that up by appearing in The Hunger Games. Going completely against casting, she was younger and smaller than they were originally looking for, and she blew everyone away with her performance. And then, during the pandemic, she became a doula! Her infectious positivity and endless grind have helped her sustain a decades-long career. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you thought last week's pick was grimy, strap in for this week as we clumsily navigate the incredibly socially tone-deaf ORPHAN (2009). Just to get this out of the way, this is objectively a very well-made movie, and both Vera Farmiga and Isabelle Fuhrman shine in their roles… but this is a very uncomfortable movie. The concept of a murderous adult orphan with proportional dwarfism and narcissistic psychopathy is a hard pill to swallow, and that doesn't even brush the surface of the titular character's, um, romantic proclivities (thankfully more implied than anything else but still). This movie is late-2000s horror to a bloody T so you just know we were squirming the whole time. Come join our family, why don't you? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For this week's second podcast review, Josh Parham & Giovanni Lago, and I are reviewing the latest film from Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner, "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1," starring Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower & Thomas Haden Church. After having its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the first part of Costner's epic western (which will stretch across four separate films) has been met with mixed reviews, some calling it a classic throwback to the great westerns we rarely see get made anymore and others saying it doesn't work as a standalone film. Does it belong on television or in the theater? What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss this, plus the film's theme, its magnificent score, the performances from the massive ensemble, whether or not it has awards potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. The 2009 film ORPHAN was an unexpected success.  With both critics and moviegoers alike, the movie received favorable notice by most.  When it was announced that the new film OPHAN:  FIRST KILL (2022) had arrived at theaters (and streaming), people were a bit surprised because not only was it a follow up film, but it was a prequel as well.  The actress that starred in the original film, Isabelle Fuhrman, was now a 25 year old woman so how could she play the role now.  So how could a prequel work and what was it's plot? Tricia (Julia Stiles) and Allen (Rossif Sutherland) are still trying to survive the disappearance of their daughter years ago.  When suddenly a diplomatic envoy lets them know that Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) had been found, she comes back to live with them in their wealthy Connecticut suburb.  Tricia begins to suspect that Esther may not be who she is, and as the mystery of Esther's past becomes the focus for Tricia, things begin to spiral out of control. OPHAN:  FIRST KILL was directed by William Brent Bell based off a screenplay by David Coggeshall.  Isabelle Fuhrman returns in the role that she made iconic over a decade ago.  Critics were positive with this follow movie and gave it remarkably unexpected positive thoughts.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and gives their thoughts.

Matt's Movie Lodgecast

September 3rd, 2022 was National Cinema Day and we celebrated by seeing the new horror movie Orphan: First Kill. The theater was packed as everyone was pumped to see the prequel to the 2009 film Orphan. It somehow stars the same actress Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, along with Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland (son of Donald), and Hiro Kanagawa as a hard-charging detective. This horror movie was directed by William Brent Bell and written by David Coggeshall, and was shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Were we scared? Were we knocked out by the twist? We'll let you know as we celebrate cinema in movie theaters!

Orphan: First Kill is an incorrectly titled prequel to the cult classic Orphan. I say that because if you're expecting this to be the film that establishes Esther's interest in murder and dad-fetishes, you're not going to get that. You will however get the most insane twist since 2021's Malignant (if you know, you know). Does it work? Is it good? Much like disposable tupperware, Orphan: First Kill rebels against the idea of a one-use premise. It ends up being the latest entry in the "meh" cinematic universe (MCU). https://youtu.be/mCa51cjcDNE Artwork by Dustin Goebel. Follow @dgoebel00 on instagram. Synopsis Orphan First Kill is a prequel to 2009's Orphan, that starred, then 10 year old Isabelle Fuhrman. Now a fully grown adult woman, she is reprising her role as Esther, a thirty something year old psychopathic proportional dwarf posing as an 8-9 year old girl. In this film, we are shown how Esther escapes an Estonian mental facility and poses as an American family's lost daughter. As time goes on, the family has more questions about Esther, and Esther has more questions about the family. Hjinks ensue. https://youtu.be/_uX6of3vBu0 Orphan: First Kill Trailer Review of Orphan: First Kill This is not a good movie, it's not a bad movie, it's meh. The film is directed by William Brent Bell, who directed The Boy and The Boy 2, which should set your expectations squarely in the Meh cinematic universe. I do applaud the plotting of the film, it unlocks the puzzle of how to reuse a one use premise.  Here's the elephant in the room. Isabelle Fuhrman is not 10 years old any more. No matter the amount of camera angles and the de-aging they use, she still looks like a full grown woman. It doesn't detract from the film nearly as much as you would expect, but it is a bizarre choice nonetheless. Would you film a Home Alone Prequel with a fully grown Macaulay Culkin? The saving grace of the film is the twist around the middle of the film. It does add an interesting dynamic, and saves it from being a true rehash. Overall, you get what you expect. A little psychopath that kills a lot of people. Score 5/10 Orphan: First Kill Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy
