Just in time for Passover, Fern Levitt has a message of freedom for Canadian audiences—about elephants. On April 11, her new documentary, Lucy: The Stolen Lives of Elephants, will begin streaming nationwide on CBC Gem. The film casts a harsh spotlight on nearly two dozen elephants owned by parks and zoos in Canada, most notably Lucy, of the Edmonton Valley Zoo, whom protesters have called to be released in recent years due to her age and declining health. To make this film, Levitt spent three years reporting on what she and others believe are irrefutable animal rights abuses. And it isn't the first time she's done it: her last film focused on the mistreatment of sled dogs in Alaska's iconic Iditarod race. After learning that some sled dogs were gassed to death, she couldn't help but draw comparisons to the Holocaust, which had been a previous artistic focus of hers. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Levitt joins Ellin Bessner to explain why she went undercover to document the treatment of elephants around the world, including Lucy and the approximately 20 living at Ontario's African Lion Safari—whose management she says has since threatened to sue her. It's a short film extravaganza! This double-header features interviews with not one but two fearless filmmakers who've created something very special in the short film space. First, Jackie Hoffart talks about The Reveal, a comedy about nonbinary Stevie, who struggles to support their sister's gender reveal party while harbouring some news of their own: that they have started on testosterone, that they are transitioning. The Reveal has its world premiere on March 29 at the 2025 Crazy8s Film Gala, AKA the hottest ticket in town. That conversation is followed by a stirring chat with filmmaker, actor, and dancer Juliana Bergstrom about mining her personal life and passions for Harbour. The film premiered on CBC Gem on February 6, and is at once a love letter to art and dance, and the struggles and triumphs of life as an artist. Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

On the Saturday February 1, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we’ll meet Giacomo Gianniotti. He starred for seven seasons as “Dr. Andrew DeLuca” on ABC’s hit drama Grey’s Anatomy and has worked with everyone from Shelley Winters and Susan Sarandon to Zoe Saldana and Dustin Hoffman. Born in Rome, but raised in Canada, he works in both Italian and English and recently played the lead role in Netflix’s Italian mini-series “Deceitful Love.” Today we talk about some of that, and the second season of his new show “Wild Cards,” which can be seen on CBC and CBC Gem. He plays Cole Ellis, a demoted cop who arrests Max Mitchell, a transient con woman played by “Riverdale’s” Vanessa Mason. While in custody and being held at the station, she helps him solve another crime. The pair are offered an opportunity at redemption – Ellis a chance to get back his detective badge, and Max a chance to stay out of jail – they just have to pair up and work together. Then we get to know Timothy Caulfield. He is a university professor who specializes in legal, policy and ethical issues in medical research, and is also a best-selling author of books like “Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash.” He joins me later in the show to talk about his latest book “The Certainty Illusion: What You Don't Know and Why It Matters.” It's a fascinating read that asks the question, “In a world where there is so much conflicting information about how we are supposed to live, what can we really know?”

The second season of the slick crime series Allegiance begins January 15 on CBC and CBC Gem. The shot-in-Surrey, B.C., drama stars Supinder Wraich (Sort Of), Enrico Colantoni and Samer Salem. I spoke with all three in Toronto at the CBC Winter Media Launch in December. Wraich plays Sabrina Sohal, a promising rookie police officer who fights to serve her hometown. Rico is the seasoned cop who mentors her past the hurdles of a flawed justice system. In Season Two, Sohal graduates to the Serious Crimes Unit and has six months to prove she's got what it takes to be a detective. She's paired in that task with a more experienced detective, played by series newcomer Salem. All three take part in this chatty podcast episode, taped live at CBC's Broadcast Centre in downtown Toronto. The discussion ranges from immigration and cultural clashes, fellow co-star David Cubitt (whom they all praise) and even which cast member caused the most outtakes.
On the Saturday January 11, 2025 edition of "The Richard Crouse Show" we meet Mark Critch, star of "Son of a Critch," now entering its fourth season on CBC and CBC Gem. Developed from his 2018 memoir, “Son of a Critch,” which was in turn based on his real-life experiences growing up in Newfoundland, the series is an entertaining look into the life of a kid who is much older than his years. Young Mark is played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Claire Rankin (Mary, Mark's mother), Sophia Powers (friend and love interest Fox), Colton Gobbo (Mike Jr., Mark's older brother), Mark Rivera (best friend Ritche) film legend Malcolm McDowell (Pop) and Mark plays his late father, Mike Critch, a popular local radio host. The first three seasons saw young Mark face awkward crushes, near-death experiences, family tensions and grapple with needing glasses. With comedy, self-depreciation and heartfelt authenticity, the show now enters into its fourth season. Drawing heavily on his own life for inspiration Mark Critich the new season sees young Mark on the bottom rung in Grade 10. There Mark meets a teacher who ignites his love for acting, leading him to start a sketch comedy troupe, Cat Fud. His mom Mary, facing menopause and a mid-life crisis, goes back to school for a fresh start. Brother Mike Jr. embarks on a radio career, joining Magic 97, a new FM radio station, and finds himself competing with his father, Mike Sr. who struggles to feel relevant when a new owner buys the radio station VOCM. I chat with Mark, then go to the vault for an interview with his co-star, the legendary Malcolm McDowell who plays his grandfather on the show.
New year brings new promises of entertainment...We kick off 2025 with a bang and a slew of new episodes and things to be talking about, especially what to start binging on these cold Canadian winter nights.'Saint-Pierre' is the story of a hard nosed Newfoundland cop (Allan Hawco) who is exiled to the French Island of 'Saint-Pierre' to team up with a headstrong deputy and solve crimes that push the boundaries of the local idyllic facade. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the stars of the show Allan Hawco and Josephine Jobert about joining the show, its appeal and the magic behind the crime procedural.'Saint-Pierre' is airing weekly on CBC and is subsequently available to stream on CBC Gem.

No man is an island. Allan Hawco's new series, however, is shot and set on an archipelago of eight islands represented by the French government off the coast of Newfoundland.Hawco, who played a detective on Republic of Doyle and was also on Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, plays Donny "Fitz" Fitzpatrick. He's a cop who gets too nosy about police secrets and is therefore banished to Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. There he is paired with local police officer Geneviève "Arch" Archambault (Joséphine Jobert from Death in Paradise). Sparks fly and plot lines ensue.Hawco talks about creating the series with Robina Lord-Stafford and Perry Chaffe, and starting a TV production base pretty much from scratch with Saint-Pierre -- an even bigger challenge than getting Doyle off the ground years ago in Newfoundland. James Purefoy also stars in Saint-Pierre, which airs Monday nights after Murdoch Mysteries on CBC and CBC Gem.
This Hour has, well, not just 22 Minutes but a full hour as I catch up with Mark Critch, this week's guest on brioux.tv: the podcast. The conversation was taped last summer in St. John's, Nfld., during production on the fourth season of Son of a Critch (returning Tuesday, Jan. 7 on CBC and CBC Gem). What a trip that was, including a visit from a guy who was once Critch's snowboard instructor -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Now both men are going downhill this winter!Speaking of which, we also talk about Critch and the 22 Minutes cast tackling an hour-long New Year's Eve special this Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 8 p.m. ET on CBC. As for Son of a Critch, look for it to be an emotional season. Young Mark (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) is off to high school, with scenes shot right in Critch's old alma mater. In fact, so much of Season Four is pulled from Critch's past, he was literally able to show the other actors video he shot in 1990 before certain scenes were shot. All this and the latest Malcolm McDowell stories in a sweet and fun, on-location episode.
Ava Val is a comedian, actor, writer and musician based in Toronto. She's made multiple appearances at Just For Laughs and The Halifax Comedy Festival, and recorded stand-up sets for CBC Gem, Crave TV, and CTV. She has a weekly podcast of her own called PodGis, which is a great place to get a taste of her high energy, clever comedy. Val released her debut special, So Brave, earlier in the year. The special coincided with what Val called her 3-year “hormoniversary,” or the third year she'd been taking hormones as part of an ongoing “mid-life crisis,” in her words: that “crisis” is, of course, the joyful but uncertain journey of trying to align one's core gender identity with one's outward gender presentation. In this conversation, we talk about how the trans community, and more specifically trans comedians, can equip themselves to contest and defy the hateful, ignorant transphobia that is surging alongside the rise of right populism. We also talk about why the theme of bravery has some connotations that aren't particularly flattering, and the level of bravery required to stand on a stage and demand the attention of people who are there to laugh, but who also arrive, presumably, with some openness to the kind of comedic storytelling that challenges the audience as much as it amuses them. Val and I discuss what it means, in that moment of performance, to balance entertaining a crowd with being true to your sense of self and aware of your own vulnerability. I really respect Val's radical honesty, which I told her the first time we spoke for the podcast. Now, with the special out, we were able to dig into the way she writes and structures the material, the relationship she has with the audience, and with comedy as a profession. I hope the conversation, like Val's special, offers an access point for people that may not know about how awesome and original contemporary comedy in Canada can be, and especially for people that don't yet have a sense of the ethics and politics of comedy that is deeply queer.

For a guy nobody wants to talk about, we certainly had a lot to talk about....On yet another very special episode we dive into the underbelly of the world of hacking, illegal surveillance and some occasionally deprived and really weird stuff in the new documentary Nobody Wants To Talk About Jacob Applebaum which is having a second screening tonight at the TIFF Bell Lightbox before it debuts on CBC Gem this coming Wednesday the 26th.Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, had a crucial hearing at London's High Court last week where judges approved a short extension on his appeal to challenge possible extradition to the U.S. to confront 18 charges, predominantly under the Espionage Act. His fate, and the fate of those who worked with him, is still up in the air. If and/or when Assange is extradited to the U.S., attention will surely shift to his closest allies, including American Jacob Appelbaum, referred to as “WLA3” (WikiLeaks Associate 3) in indictments against Assange, who himself is currently residing in exile in Germany. A new film by Canadian filmmaker Jamie Kastner, "Nobody Wants To Talk About Jacob Appelbaum" delves into the intriguing yet troubled persona of Appelbaum, whose destiny appears tightly interwoven with Assange's, and the obscure subculture from which they both emerged. Kastner ("The Skyjacker's Tale”, "There Are No Fakes," + ) embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries surrounding Jacob Appelbaum. The film includes interviews reluctantly secured from elusive individuals including Appelbaum himself, woven together with seldom-seen footage and original investigative efforts, forming a cautionary tale relevant to our times. No word of lie, but this one gets a little out there, we had the pleasure of sitting down with friend of the show, director Jamie Kastner about what drew him to this story, how the film sits just on the wrong side of uncomfortable at times plus a little bonus news about how one of his previous films actually helped to generate some positive results in the world.Nobody Wants To Talk About Jacob Applebaum is on CBC Gem this Wednesday June 26th.

Yes, another witchcraft documentary! This time, here are my thoughts - I could not help myself as someone who absolutely loves documentaries! I even wrote a paper about the representation of witches in documentary film back in my undergrad - the short version is, at the time, back in probably 2009, witches were presented as either silly or sexy. This documentary falls into neither trope, but still completely misses the mark with its focus on identity and reincarnation, rather than witchcraft and magic itself. In this episode I give my full thoughts on the documentary “Coven” which you can watch for free on CBC Gem. // All my links, including freebies and info on my membership: https://sabrina-scott.mykajabi.com/links

Zarqa Nawaz is a writer, film and television producer, published author, public speaker, journalist, creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie, former broadcaster, and star of Zarqa, the CBC Gem comedy series in which she plays a woman named Zarqa, who sells gullible white people brown people things. In season one, a recently divorced Zarqa worked on her business while being pursued by a gaggle of men, ending in a fantastic brawl in the mosque between her ex, her imam, and her white brain surgeon boyfriend. Season two – which hit CBC Gem last fall – began with Zarqa choosing to focus on herself and her business instead of any of the men. Zarqa's pinning all of her hopes on her new product, Love Masala, an intoxicating new scent and love potion from her company, Zarqish Delights. And what better way to reach the masses than with an endorsement from global brand ambassador Pious Pinky Pervez, a Muslim social media influencer with millions of followers played with pious pink perfection by friend of the podcast Aliza Vellani? Aliza portrayed Layla on Little Mosque on the Prairie, and so Zarqa is something of a reunion between Zarqa and Aliza, except this time, they're on the same side of the camera. In this compelling conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Zarqa and Aliza reflect on Little Mosque on the Prairie, their experience shooting Zarqa more than a decade later, what diversity and representation looks like in the comedy sphere, and Zarqa's adventures in stand-up comedy. Earlier this month, four of the stars of Allegiance – Supinder Wraich, David Cubitt, Stephen Lobo, and Brian Markinson – joined Sabrina in the YVR Screen Scene studio to discuss the new character-driven crime procedural, which premiered on CBC and CBC Gem on February 7. Supinder stars as Sabrina Sohal (Sort Of), a star rookie police officer who must grapple with the limits of the justice system as she fights to exonerate her politician father Ajeet Sohal, played by Stephen. Sabrina serves her diverse hometown of Surrey alongside veteran training officer Vince Brambilla (Enrico Colantoni). Brian appears as Ajeet's exasperated lawyer Max Portman, and David is Superintendent Bolton, Sabrina's commanding officer. Allegiance (a CBC Original Drama from Lark Productions) is the story of a young woman caught between her allegiance to her flag, to her badge, and to her family. In this fascinating and at times boisterous conversation, the actors talk Surrey, Sabrina (the character, not the host), inclusion, and the singular joy of exquisite writing. Guerilla filmmaker-turned-Hollywood-darling Matt Johnson talks to Tom about his critically acclaimed film “BlackBerry,” which is now available as a TV series on CBC Gem, how he's dealing with mainstream success, and why his mission in life is to inspire young filmmakers to stay in Canada and make great films.
Even if you don't recognize the Cowichan sweater by its name, you will absolutely recognize it on sight: the thick yarn; the distinctive patterns; the warmth of the raw sheep's wool. But a Cowichan sweater is more than just a sweater, especially for the Coast Salish people from the Cowichan Tribes who make them. It's a provider of life, literally, as a way to put food on the table; it's a way to build community and share stories and connect to ancestors. To quote Ron Rice of the Victoria Native Friendship Centre as featured in filmmaker Mary Galloway's documentary The Cowichan Sweater: Our Knitted Legacy, “Cowichan sweaters are iconic. Cowichan sweaters are our path forward in so many different ways. Cowichan sweaters are a look back and a look forward all at the same time.” Writer, director, filmmaker, and actor Mary Galloway hails from Coast Salish Territory, and her beautiful film brings viewers into the past, present, and future of the Cowichan sweater while taking us along on a deeply personal quest: to recreate a sweater that was worn by her late grandfather, Chief Dennis Alphonse, who was chief for 40 years. The Cowichan Sweater: Our Knitted Legacy is now available on CBC Gem and will have its first national television broadcast on December 23. In this fascinating and revealing conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Mary reflects on her journey into this important part of her own legacy. Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA
Vivek Shraya's coming-of-age play and book “How to Fail as a Popstar” has been turned into a new series for CBC Gem. Vivek talks to Tom about adapting her autobiographical play for the screen, the power of failure, and how she still hopes this show will make her famous.
