They share insights gained from interviewing dozens of former players, staff, and loved ones of the legendary Brigham Young University (BYU) football coach. The conversation centers on Edwards’ unique, Christlike approach to leadership, relationship-building, delegation, and personal mentorship. Key Insights Delegation and Empowerment: LaVell Edwards believed in hiring capable experts, trusting them completely, and giving them the autonomy to execute their roles without micromanagement. One-on-One Relationships: Rather than focusing purely on football tactics, LaVell maintained an open-door policy and prioritized checking in on his players’ personal lives, families, and future goals. Seeing Unseen Potential: LaVell possessed a unique ability to identify hidden talents in individuals—often encouraging position changes, urging players to serve missions, or convincing them to stay when they wanted to quit. Lifting the Lost and Struggling: He repeatedly reached out to lower-string players or individuals in crisis, offering unwavering support, loyalty, and personal investment during their hardest moments. Innovation and Vision: Recognizing systemic limitations, LaVell embraced innovative approaches—such as pioneering a high-powered passing offense—to elevate his program to national prominence. Leadership Applications Empower Ward and Organizational Leaders: Latter-day Saint leaders can emulate LaVell Edwards by delegating real authority to presidency members, committee leaders, and council members rather than attempting to manage every operational detail. Prioritize Personal Ministering: Leaders should create accessible, low-pressure environments (such as open-door settings or informal check-ins) to focus on individual souls rather than just administrative tasks. Instill Belief in Others: Leaders can actively express confidence in those they serve, helping individuals recognize their divine potential and encouraging them toward transformative choices like missionary or church service. 00:03:12 – Origins of the Book Project 00:04:45 – The Impact of LaVell Edwards 00:06:21 – LaVell’s Influence Beyond Football 00:07:13 – The Personal Touch of LaVell Edwards 00:08:37 – LaVell’s Unique Leadership Style 00:10:15 – LaVell’s Unexpected Journey to BYU 00:12:06 – LaVell’s Vision and Innovation 00:13:09 – The Last Moments with LaVell 00:14:06 – Mentorship in LaVell’s Life 00:15:33 – LaVell’s Leadership Style in the Church 00:17:27 – Balancing Authority and Delegation 00:19:40 – Creating a Culture of Trust 00:20:49 – One-on-One Relationships with Players 00:22:49 – LaVell’s Home as a Safe Space 00:24:53 – The Importance of Team Prayer 00:26:34 – Common Themes from Player Interviews 00:29:03 – Humility as a Key Principle 00:30:38 – LaVell’s Care for All Players 00:32:25 – Encouraging Players to Stay 00:34:00 – Promoting Missionary Service 00:42:12 – Conclusion and Legacy of LaVell Edwards The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints’ mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. Dave and Blaine break down the newly released depth chart — Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin atop the offense, a veteran-heavy defensive front, and real competition for reps behind the starters — before playing Kalani Sitake's own comments from his first regular-season media day. New BYUtv football analyst Jaren Hall, a former BYU starting quarterback and Minnesota Vikings draft pick, joins the show for his on-air debut, reflecting on the highs and lows of chasing an NFL roster spot, what's impressed him most about Bear Bachmeier, and reliving two of the wildest plays of his own BYU career: forcing the fumble recovery on the infamous Arizona State pick-six-that-wasn't and marveling at Puka Nacua's game-saving catch against Boise State. Volleyball's Elli Mortensen is honored as the Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week after a big weekend in Florida, and Utah Tech play-by-play voice Rod Zundel calls in to detail his Trailblazers' brutal 54-0 loss to defending FCS champion Montana State and to marvel at how quickly BYU has climbed from the WAC to Big 12 contender.BYU Alumni Association executive director Michael Johanson returns to preview a new home-game tradition called "Bringing It Home," anchored by a September 11 kickoff-week service event in downtown Provo called First Down Provo, plus the alumni association's continuing ice-cream giveaways for visiting fans and its road-game service projects in cities like Fort Collins, Fort Worth, Orlando and Lawrence. The show closes with two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris Super Fan interviews. Brothers Chris and Chad Lamb, whose father Terry Lamb spent years as a KSL television producer and director on BYU broadcasts, reminisce about working as sideline spotters for Dave and Blaine in college and play a round of "Where Were You?" running from the 1984 Holiday Bowl through Harvey Unga's 2007 game-winner over Utah. St. George's Chris and Cheryl Nelson then share an unforgettable story about running into BYU legend Vai Sikahema in a hospital elevator while Cheryl was in labor in 1985 — an encounter memorable enough that they later named their son Ty (after Ty Detmer) and their grandson Zach (after Zach Wilson). Both super-fan couples predict a Cougar win over Notre Dame this October, and the show wraps with the Redmond Roots Rollout's look back at BYU and sports history on August 31st. Hosted on Acast. visit: https://www.ysguys.comDave McCann and Blaine Fowler open a truly global episode of Y's Guys — with viewers chiming in from Singapore, Cambodia, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and across Cougar Nation — by running down a stacked stretch of preseason news heading into the Sept. 5 opener against Utah Tech. BYU checks in at No. 6 in ESPN's preseason power rankings (per Mark Schlabach), running back LJ Martin picks up preseason Second Team All-America honors from USA Today and the AP along with Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year buzz, and Bret McMurphy's AP-voter research names BYU the single most underrated preseason team in the country over the last 12 years. National forecasters pile on from there: Stewart Mandel (New York Times) has BYU going 11-1 and winning the Big 12, while CBS Sports and CFB Kings both project the Cougars reaching the College Football Playoff.Former Cougar linebacker and current BYUtv football analyst Harvey Langi joins for the back half of the news segment, pulling back the curtain on NFL cutdown day — the anxiety of waiting for "the grim reaper" to call, and how some of the league's biggest stars (Taysom Hill, Zach Wilson, Todd Christensen, Fred Warner) turned early setbacks into Hall of Fame-caliber careers. He then breaks down what a healthy, more experienced Bear Bachmeier means for BYU's offense entering year two, how he'd scheme to defend him, and closes with his own ranking of BYU's five toughest games of the season — landing on Arizona, not Notre Dame, as the No. 1 measuring-stick game. The second hour brings the Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week (soccer's Emma Hamberlin, who scored twice to beat USC), a big basketball headline as BYU beats out Kentucky for transfer big man Jaxon Kohler, and a full campus-notes sweep across women's basketball (Delaney Gibb and Canada's run to the 2028 Olympic qualifying final), soccer, volleyball, cross country and baseball. Two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris BYU Super Fans round out the show — Greg Schroeder of Twin Falls, Idaho and Provo-studio guest Dean Taylor — each sharing their Cougar histories and playing a round of "Where Were You?" through classic BYU moments, before the Redmond Roots Rollout and a look ahead to next Monday's Game Week Bonanza with Jaren Hall, Rod Zundel, Adam Edmunds and Michael Johanson.Timestamps (approximate):0:00 – Show Open: Live From Singapore to Cambodia, Cougar Nation Tunes In9:31 – BYU vs. Utah Tech Game Week Details + BYU Cracks ESPN's Top 611:04 – LJ Martin's Historic Preseason All-American Honors12:54 – BYU Named Most Underrated Preseason Team in the Country16:27 – Stewart Mandel Predicts BYU Wins the Big 12 and Reaches the CFP21:11 – Week Zero College Football Preview + Cougars in the NFL Before Cutdown Day28:11 – Harvey Langi Joins the Show30:10 – Inside NFL Cutdown Day: Harvey Langi on the "Grim Reaper"35:11 – Harvey Langi on Taysom Hill, Zach Wilson & the Biggest Cuts in NFL History43:00 – How Would You Defend Bear Bachmeier? Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler kicked off the show declaring summer over and football season back, previewing the return of live NFL action, BYU's fall camp opening, and the season premiere of After Further Review.BYU TV analyst David Nixon called in from Little League football practice to break down where BYU should land in the preseason AP poll (he predicts a top 15-worthy team that lands around 17-18), name wide receiver as the team's biggest question mark heading into camp, and give an update on his brother-in-law Taysom Hill's free agency search following his emotional exit from New Orleans.Brian Nixon, CEO of Touchpoints and Aflac's Utah district manager, joined as the show's newest title sponsor and shared a powerful personal story: a rhabdomyolysis collapse 150 meters from the finish of his high school state championship race, the coma that followed, and how losing his track scholarship redirected him to BYU and eventually to building his own company.New BYU women's volleyball head coach Rob Neilson also stopped by to discuss taking over the program after six successful years at Utah State, the returning talent in Brielle Kemavor, Claire Little Chambers, and Alex Bower, and what it takes to build the belief and culture that won BYU a national championship in 2004.Linebacker Isaiah Glasker was named Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week for his standout 2025 season, and 94-year-old season-ticket holder Ben Banks joined as the Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris super fan, reminiscing about the Miami upset, the 2006 Utah win, and decades of BYU football memories. The show also covered a federal judge's ruling on NCAA eligibility for the 2022 recruiting class, President C. Shane Reese's op-ed on the Protect College Sports Act, a full round of national preseason rankings and CFP predictions for BYU and Texas Tech, and Campus Notes covering football, basketball, soccer, cross country, volleyball, and golf schedules heading into the 2026-27 season. Jason Shepherd joined Dave McCann on this week's Y's Guys as the show covered a busy stretch of BYU sports news, from football scheduling and recruiting to basketball roster movement and spring updates across campus. The guys opened with a look at BYU football's newly announced Friday night game against Iowa State, the significance of the upcoming Notre Dame matchup, and what Dave called “eight days of glory” in September for college and NFL football fans. They also discussed another BYU football recruiting win with the commitment of 2027 running back Ezra San Levia and ran through a full set of campus notes, including baseball's hot streak, softball's sweep of Houston, volleyball's split with USC, and strong results from track, golf, and tennis.A major basketball topic was AJ Dybantsa moving to No. 1 in ESPN's NBA mock draft, while still technically leaving the door open for a return to BYU before the withdrawal deadline. Dave and Jason also broke down BYU basketball roster news, including the return of Collin Chandler, the addition of Tyler Betsey, and what the transfer portal losses and possible moves still mean for Kevin Young's roster construction. Their takeaway was clear: BYU is prioritizing age, experience, and fit as it builds toward next season, while still carrying enough national credibility to show up in early top-25 projections. The show also featured three guests with very different but compelling connections to BYU. Kirby Heyborne talked about his work as an actor, audiobook narrator, and BYUtv host, along with his effort to create uplifting entertainment through the Help Them See Foundation. Curtis Blair, president and CEO of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce, previewed the Pillar of the Valley event honoring the last seven BYU presidents and reflected on BYU's influence on the region. Then Jeff Burningham, BYU professor, entrepreneur, and author of The Last Book Written by a Human, joined the show for a thoughtful conversation about AI, wisdom, embodied experience, and why BYU remains such a formative place for students and families. The episode also honored Ilove'a Brittingham as Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week after her huge series in BYU softball's sweep of Houston.#BYU #BYUSports #BYUFootball #BYUBasketball #AJDybantsa #KirbyHeyborne #CurtisBlair #JeffBurningham #EloBrittingham #CougarNation #BYUAthletics #YSGUYS #WiseGuys #BYU #LDS Hosted on Acast. It's President's Day and Y's Guys delivers one of the most consequential shows of the season. With Richie Saunders lost for the year after tearing his ACL just 45 seconds into Saturday's game, BYU basketball faces a defining stretch. Dave McCann and Brian Logan (in for Blaine Fowler) break down what this means for the Cougars heading into a massive road test at Arizona and a home showdown with Iowa State. Later in the show, newly retired jersey honoree Jimmer Fredette joins live to reflect on his rafters moment — and to offer insight on how a team survives losing a key player late in the season. On the football side, serious developments surround former receiver Parker Kingston, and the program now turns its attention to what the receivers room looks like moving forward. The show carefully follows its standard protocol: allowing the legal process to unfold without speculation while analyzing roster implications. BYUtv analyst David Nixon joins to discuss spring practice goals, defensive staff changes, NFL Combine invitees Chase Roberts and Jack Kelly, and what a Kelly Poppinga-led defense might look and feel like. The Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week honors Rob Wright III, who exploded for 30 points at Baylor and followed it up with a 39-point masterpiece against Colorado — carrying the Cougars with Saunders sidelined. Meanwhile, AJ Dybantsa continues his historic freshman campaign, closing in on Danny Ainge's freshman scoring record as BYU remains firmly in the NCAA Tournament picture despite one of the toughest remaining schedules in the country.Campus Notes highlight national track and field dominance — including Riley Chamberlain's NCAA mile record — strong performances in volleyball, baseball, tennis, and golf, and the release of BYU women's soccer's Big 12 schedule. With powerful interviews, heartfelt tributes to Patti Edwards, and honest discussion about navigating adversity, the February 16 show blends emotion, accountability, and championship-level analysis.#BYUSports #GoCougs #Ysguys #BYUBasketball #BYUFootball #Big12 #JimmerFredette #RobWrightIII #AJDybantsa #CougarNation #LDS #BYU Hosted on Acast. visit: https://www.ysguys.comThe January 26 edition of Y's Guys sets the stage for one of the biggest nights in BYU basketball history, airing just over an hour before No. 13 BYU hosts No. 1 Arizona at the Marriott Center. With Blaine Fowler on BYUtv pregame duty, Dave McCann is joined by Brian Logan for a news-packed show covering football, basketball, and nearly every BYU sport on campus. The hosts open with the 2026 BYU football schedule, game-by-game win projections, and a discussion of BYU finishing No. 11 in the final AP Top 25, its highest season-ending ranking since 2020.Dave and Brian dive deep into what finishing No. 11 could mean for BYU's 2026 preseason ranking, noting that many of the Cougars' greatest seasons began unranked. Early preseason projections already have BYU hovering between No. 8 and No. 13, fueling optimism that the Cougars could start the year nationally ranked for the first time in over a decade. The conversation also touches on major national storylines, including the College Football Playoff remaining at 12 teams, the Big 12 Championship moving to a prime-time Friday night slot, and the NCAA allowing commercial jersey patches starting August 1.Basketball dominates the middle of the show as BYU enters the night 17–2, fresh off a dominant rivalry win over Utah in which AJ Dybantsa scored a historic 43 points, breaking Danny Ainge's freshman scoring record and tying Jimmer Fredette for the most points ever scored at the Marriott Center. The hosts preview the Arizona matchup, break down the freshman phenom showdown between Dybantsa and Koa Peat, and reflect on BYU's rare history against No. 1 teams. Dybantsa's monster week earns him Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week, his fourth such honor, as Dave declares, “We are watching someone special.”The show closes with extensive Campus Notes across BYU athletics, including men's and women's basketball, volleyball, track and field, golf, gymnastics, softball, and baseball. A featured interview with Travis Kimball, co-founder of Quick Quack Car Wash, welcomes a new Y's Guys sponsor, while historic “On This Day” moments, birthdays, and a Kobe Bryant quote provide a fitting lead-in to tipoff. With momentum building across multiple sports and a sold-out Marriott Center buzzing, the January 26 episode captures BYU athletics at a peak moment. Hosted on Acast.
