The Heart and Hustle Awards were announced last week and our boyfriends past and present were a lock Our Olympic Baseball rundown covers qHAR, the bullpen cart, the emotional Eddie Alvarez story, and Scott Kazmir and Nick Allen, two guys at opposite ends of their career getting a bump from the spotlight. Hooray for that, plus Brock Holt's eephus, the Scherzer's philanthropy, Adley Rutschman in general, the CPBL, and Christian Yelich's acoustic guitar, because then things go south. In Police Blotter, Omar Vizquel's story gets significantly worse, the lead-up to Trevor Bauer's restraining order hearing continues to spiral, and Ramon Laureano is player #5 to earn a PED suspension this year. MLB has given up on encouraging players to vaccinate and now may have to put back some loosened protocols -- mask mandates already in place in Spring Training facilities used for the minors. None of the remaining seven teams has met the 85% vax threshold since June.Write your congressperson to support the Minor League Baseball Relief Act to carve out emergency relief for ballpark staff wages and stadium expenses due to no season last year and reduced ticket sales this year. This is similar to other Federal relief earmarked for suffering business, small and large, but focusing on keeping these specific community treasures afloat until they regain their footing. There is no Federal help on the way for the woes suffered by minor league players due to MLB not ponying up housing and food for their staff but instead creating unnecessary financial stress and damaging player health. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants signing pitchers Shun Yamaguchi and Scott Kazmir to minor league deals with invitations to spring training. Yamaguchi signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays last offseason, and did not have a good 2020 season. Toronto cut him loose this winter, and the Giants picked him up on a minor league deal that will pay him the league minimum if he makes the major league roster. Yamaguchi was a star closer and starter in Japan, and could be used as a starter or reliever with the Giants if he makes the team. Kazmir is 37 years old and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2016, but he's still throwing in the low 90s and has always had a really good changeup. It's a no-risk move for a guy who still has potential. In Kazmir and Yamaguchi, the Giants have added two more pitchers capable of making starts. The Giants now go at least nine deep with intriguing arms to fill out the starting rotation. They're likely going to need that depth to cover 162 games, a year after pitchers' workloads were severely shortened due to the 60-game season.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Scott Kazmir is still pitching. He's signed a minor league deal with the Giants as he attempts to make another comeback. Kazmir hasn't seen MLB action since 2016, but he's reportedly been up to 92-93 mph in bullpen sessions, which is around the velocity he had at his peak. Royce Lewis, the Twins' #1 prospect, has suffered a torn ACL. Lewis will likely miss all of 2021.

The Red Sox are playing really well, as they're 14-6 since August 10th. The offense is clicking, with everybody delivering, and the bullpen looks good as well. Theo Epstein deserves credit too, for the Victor Martinez trade, and the worthwhile waiver pick-ups of Alex Gonzalez, Billy Wagner, and Paul Byrd. Clay Buchholz pitched wonderfully on Saturday, and it's possible that he has turned the corner. That is a huge key to the Red Sox. But Alex says that this is all moot until Josh Beckett turns it around. Beckett has allowed 10 home runs in his past 3 starts, and doesn't look good. Alex says that this Red Sox team doesn't get out of the first round of the playoffs without Beckett, and that Beckett's struggles are by far his biggest worry. Also, the back-end of the rotation took another hit, as Tim Wakefield was scratched from his start tomorrow against Tampa Bay. Alex mulls over the AL standings, and states that this series against the Rays is Tampa Bay's final stand in the wild card race. Alex, though he understands the motive of the Scott Kazmir trade, doesn't understand the timing. Alex also doesn't understand why the Red Sox didn't put in a claim on Kazmir. The "post of the day" is handed out, a call is played, and Alex praises the Cardinals' great play, and speculates on the outcome of the Giants and Rockies NL wild card race.
