Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Before the bombings, power struggles, and notorious crime bosses that would make Cleveland infamous, there was a small but determined network of Italian immigrants building a criminal empire in the shadows. In this episode, we explore the origins of the Cleveland Mafia, tracing its roots from the late 19th and early 20th centuries as immigrant communities established themselves in Northeast Ohio. Discover how early organized crime figures Joe Leonard and Joe Morello leveraged gambling, bootlegging, extortion, and political connections to create the foundation of what would become one of America's most influential Mafia families. We'll uncover the key personalities, pivotal events, and social conditions that allowed the Cleveland crime syndicate to emerge and grow. From the challenges faced by immigrant neighborhoods to the rise of Prohibition-era opportunities, this episode reveals how the Cleveland underworld evolved from a loose collection of street gangs into a structured criminal organization that would shape the city's history for decades. Join us as we examine the origins of the Cleveland Mafia and the beginnings of a story that would leave a lasting mark on both organized crime and Cleveland itself. Tune in and found out! Who was “Kentucky Frank”?Scout. Showman. Snake wrangler. Shooting gallery owner. Wild West performer. Serial storyteller. And eventually, a 72-year-old man who made headlines for marrying a thirteen-year-old Kentucky girl.In this episode of Kentucky History & Haunts, we trace the strange and unsettling life of the man born George Russell, better known to newspaper readers across the country as “Kentucky Frank.” From dime museums and traveling sideshows in the 1890s to wagon races, shooting galleries, escaped snakes, and rural Christmas light displays powered by an early Delco generator, Frank spent decades carefully crafting his own legend.Along the way, he crossed paths with some of the most bizarre corners of turn-of-the-century entertainment culture, performing alongside sword swallowers, “freak show” acts, animal performers, and traveling curiosities that filled newspaper advertisements across America. But beneath the eccentric persona was a much darker reality. At the center of this story is Margaret Carpenter, the thirteen-year-old Kentucky girl who became “Mrs. Kentucky Frank.” What began as a disturbing newspaper headline slowly transforms into something far more complicated and unexpectedly moving. After Frank's death, Margaret went on to finish school, attend college, become a beloved educator for nearly four decades, raise a family, and leave behind a legacy far greater than the man whose name once overshadowed hers. This episode explores:• Traveling Wild West and dime museum culture• The mythology of frontier performers• Vine Street's strange entertainment district in Cincinnati• Early shooting galleries and wartime rifle culture• Rural Kentucky life in the 1920s and 30s• The troubling normalization of child marriage in early Kentucky history• And the remarkable life Margaret built afterwardBecause in the end, the real story isn't Kentucky Frank. It's Margaret.Follow Kentucky History & Haunts for historic photos, newspaper clippings, and episode updates:Instagram: @kyhistoryhauntsFacebook: Kentucky History & HauntsSources for this episode included extensive newspaper archive research, regional Kentucky publications, census records, obituaries, and historical reporting.Email: kyhistoryhaunts@gmail.comMailing address: Jessie Bartholomew252 Whittington Pkwy, Louisville, KY, 40222*Transcripts are auto-generated and may contain errors

From LA Haunted Hayride's Cider Mill to Scarehouse Windsor's dinner experiences, the expansion of food carts at HHN, and all the haunts with hidden bars, we're seeing more haunts weaving food into the story. Guests are buying experiences from us, and food has to be part of that, not separate from it. Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Did you ever look up in the sky and see something weird, something you can't explain? In this episode we have 3 stories about unexplained things in the night sky. Our first story explores the efforts of a group of St. Joe High School students from Cleveland, Ohio who figured out a way to listen to and track the Soviet satellite, Sputnik, even before our own military. They then created a device from a slide rule and a globe to assist in their efforts. Their efforts landed the boys on TV stations, newspapers, magazines then a visit by the FBI who promptly confiscated all their recorded tapes. Tune in and find out what happened next! Our next story we look at astronomer Jerry Ehman in 1977 using the Ohio State University Big Ear radio telescope. His volunteer job was to simply examine marks on an endless scroll of paper searching for anomalies, outlying marks indicating signals from out space. These signals may show something or someone trying to make contact us here on earth. On this particular day, in review of the data, the signal was so strong he made a notation "WOW" indicating the unusual signal that he had never seen before. This weird and strong signal was so strange, it caused arguments and discussion that continue to this day. Find out what happened and what people think the signal may or may not be. Our final story is about a mystery. A mystery that may or not exist at all. Its yjr infamous Hangar 18 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Some people think that the aliens that were rumored to have been recovered from a UFO crash at the infamous Roswell, NM crash. Were these alien bodies taken there? Who's allowed there? What really goes on there? Tune in and found out! Send us Fan MailYou wake up in a cold sweat. You just had a hyper-realistic dream that you and your ex-wife were back together, or worse, having a massive fight. Now, your entire morning is ruined by confusion, anger, or guilt. Does this mean you still want her back? Does it mean you are failing at your recovery?According to psychotherapist Nick Balaisis, the answer is a resounding no.Today, we dive into the fascinating world of Jungian dream analysis. We debunk the myth that dreams are just random neurological "trash," and explore how your subconscious uses dreams to send you vital messages about your own healing. Nick breaks down why the "Ex" in your dream is rarely actually about her—instead, she often symbolizes a part of yourself that you are neglecting, such as your own capacity for self-care.If you want to stop letting your nightmares ruin your mornings and start using them as a roadmap for your recovery, this episode will completely change how you view your time asleep. In this episode, we cover:The "Trash" Theory: Why we shouldn't dismiss our dreams as just random neurological noise. The "Ex" Dream: Why dreaming of your former partner usually means you are looking for a specific trait within yourself (and why you shouldn't take it literally)."Man-Keeping": How men outsource their emotional self-care to their wives, and how to start cultivating an "inner mother" to take care of yourself.Decoding Nightmares: Are you running because you're being chased, or being chased because you're running? Finding the "seeds of rebirth" hidden inside scary dreams. The Unconscious Nudge: How your brain uses the dream world to force you to look at the pain you are avoiding during the day.Guest Bio: Nick Balaisis is a psychotherapist in private practice in Ontario, Canada, and an instructor at the University of Waterloo. With training in Jungian psychology from Zurich, Switzerland, he helps individuals use dream analysis to access their unconscious, process complex life transitions, and live more authentically.Resources:Read Nick's Work: Find his regular articles on Psychology Today. Marco Pantani was untouchable. On June 5th, 1999, the Pirate stood on the brink of cycling immortality — leading the Giro d'Italia by over five minutes, dominating the mountains, and leaving the sport's biggest names behind. Then, in a hotel room in the Italian Alps, three doctors took his blood. Five hours later, his race was over. His career would never recover. Five years later, Pantani was found dead alone in a hotel room in Rimini. This is the story of cycling's most tragic icon: the rise, the scandal, the conspiracy, and the devastating fall of the man who made millions believe in impossible attacks and pure climbing genius.Parlee Cycles "Whether it's a tough day, a gruelling training session, an epic road trip or sitting on the side of the road, exhausted and wondering how you'll get to the top... Byrd's historic North Pole expedition, and later signed on for another journey toward Antarctica because apparently one polar expedition wasn't enough. Then, we shift gears into Kentucky's surprising connection to the very first Scripps National Spelling Bee, which grew out of a statewide competition organized by the Courier-Journal. Louisville's own **Frank Neuhauser became the first national champion in 1925 after correctly spelling gladiolus and was welcomed home with a parade. From there… things get significantly stranger. This episode also covers:An antique dealer in Cynthiana who accidentally shot his friend after grabbing the wrong gun from a drawerA jail escapee who voluntarily turned himself in because he wanted a warm bedA defense attorney sentenced to jail for contempt during a murder trialTwo teenage robbers inspired by dime novels whose crime spree quickly unraveledSources:Primarily sourced from April 1926 editions of The Courier-Journal, Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, Kentucky Post, and other regional newspaper archives. Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Ohio played an outsized role in shaping the leadership of the Union and Confederacy during the American Civil War—producing a remarkable number of generals who would go on to influence not only the outcome of the war, but the future of the nation itself. In this episode, we explore the lives and legacies of some of the Buckeye State's most prominent military leaders, including Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, and George McClelllan. From Grant's steady rise to overall command of Union forces, to Sherman's ruthless and transformative campaigns across the South, these men redefined modern warfare through strategy, innovation, and sheer determination. We'll uncover how Ohio's frontier spirit, political climate, and growing industrial power helped shape these commanders—and why so many Union generals traced their roots back to towns and cities across the state. Along the way, we'll dive into battlefield decisions, personal rivalries, and the lasting impact these leaders had long after the guns fell silent. Join us as we journey through war-torn America and discover how Ohio became a proving ground for some of the most influential military minds in U.S. history. Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. In the quiet railroad town of Bellefontaine, crates of bananas once arrived daily—ordinary cargo masking an extraordinary and sinister story. In this episode, we dive into the shadowy world of the so-called “Society of the Banana,” a chilling chapter tied to the rise of the Black Hand in small-town Ohio. What seemed like a simple fruit business became entangled with whispers of extortion, secret threats, and violence carried over from the Old World into America's heartland. Through the lens of a brutal early 20th-century crime, we explore how immigrant communities were targeted, how coded warnings and fear spread through tight-knit neighborhoods, and how something as innocent as a shipment of bananas could conceal a much darker reality. Join us as we peel back the layers of this forgotten mystery—where commerce, crime, and culture collided in Bellefontaine, and where the reach of the Black Hand may have been closer than anyone dared to admit.
