In the final Haunted House review episode of the season we talk about The Haunting at Berkeley Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ. Was this our favorite? Did we keep it? Kill it? Does sledding somehow get mentioned in this episode? Guess you'll have to listen to find out. Although we love all Haunts, we definitely had some interesting take aways from this one. Happy (still) Halloween here at the Anything Goes Podcast!

For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is the section of the New Testament widely agreed to contain the very heart of Jesus' kingdom message. The teachings were and still are remarkable and revolutionary. For just as by the Law God had been building an alternative community through the people of Israel, so Jesus Christ is creating an alternative communityin the world.“After [two thousand] years the Sermon on the Mount still haunts men. They may praise it, as Mahatma Gandhi did; or like Nietzsche, they may curse it. They cannot ignore it. Its words are winged words, quick and powerful to rebuke, to challenge, to inspire. And though some turn from it in despair, it continues, like some mighty magnetic mountain, to attract to itself the greatest spirits of our [age]—many [of them] not Christians—so that if some world-wide vote were taken, there is little doubt that men would account [the Sermon on the Mount] ‘the most searching and powerful utterance we possess on what concerns the moral life.'” — A. M. Krysta brings us three spooky stories ranging from a house with a murderous history, a doll that doesn't know how to 'let it go' and the details of a house whose very walls are a legacy to the little known spellcraft of what has come to be known as 'The Pennsylvania Dutch'. Laura tells us the Halloween Legends of the Vanishing Date as well as the Irish Legend of Stingy Jack and the origin of the Jack O' Lantern before sharing a story from a haunted Carriage house her sister once called home. Dean tells an old story of a childhood dare gone awry, reframing it in the trappings of his youth and follows it up with stories of a real Haunted experience he had in Atchison, Kansas; and the ghostly encounters of several of his friends. It is a wild ride through folklore, history and terror that rounds out the Halloween season!

Australia is now enjoying more easing of COVID-19 restrictions after several states hit targets of 70% or more of citizens already receiving dual vaccines. But what about the situation of other countries in the world that have reached that limit. Have they succeeded in curbing the spread of Covid-19?
In America's early history, the enactment of Poor Laws and the establishment of poorhouses and asylums gave physically, mentally and emotionally disabled people a place to live and eat. But what kind of life did they have in these charity institutions? How did they die and what did they leave behind? This book examines the answers to these questions and more as they arose at Eloise Infirmary and Psychiatric Hospital. This is not only a brief history of almost 150 years of Eloise, located in Westland, Michigan, but it also introduces you to stories of the true humanity of the lost souls who experienced traumatic deaths that may have led to the current hauntings. Actual paranormal experiences people have had over the past few years along with stunning photographs are revealed for the first time. By combining the history, humanity and haunts, you will meet Eloise through the eyes of those who experienced this sometimes-unforgiving institution firsthand.HOST: Rob MellonFEATURED BREW: Paranoia Imperial Pale Ale, Odd Side Ales, Grand Haven, MichiganBOOK: Eloise Asylum: The History, the Humanity and the Hauntshttps://www.amazon.com/Eloise-Asylum-History-Humanity-Haunts/dp/0578648075/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1LGRSU4I6UBAI&dchild=1&keywords=eloise+asylum&qid=1634864700&qsid=140-8553093-2922100&sr=8-1&sres=0578648075%2C0738519545%2C137630824X%2CB01N1X0BQ6%2C1401310192%2C0062574337%2C1717487173%2C1783449861%2CB076VD22TJMUSIC: Bones Forkhttps://bonesfork.com/

A few weeks ago, I was back in New York City for the first time since 2019. It was great—I saw coworkers in person, and I had lunch at one of my old spots, the Waverly Diner, with actor J. Smith-Cameron. She's best known for playing no-nonsense general counsel Gerri on Succession, but J. has had a long career as a stage actress in New York, on- and off-Broadway. She's also a neighborhood mainstay in the West Village, and over omelets and egg creams, she and I talked about the many phases of her life she's spent there, getting ready to send her only daughter off to college abroad this fall, and how acting has taught her to slow down and observe the world going by, one thing at a time—a skill she says was invaluable during the pandemic.
NETHERWORLD Haunted House is open nightly, and there's no time like the present to celebrate the acclaimed attraction's 25 Seasons of Screams! Twenty-five plus years ago, co-creators Ben Armstrong and Billy Messina set out to create a one-of-a-kind and otherworldly haunted house experience the likes of which Atlantans had never seen before. The goal was to develop an attraction that would be immensely horrifying but equally entertaining – something that would become a seasonal tradition Halloween enthusiasts would return to year after year. That extraordinary vision helped attract a team of highly talented actors, makeup artists, costumers, set builders, and animatronics experts, which helped catapult NETHERWORLD to the next level and become known as one of the most influential haunts in the world. Years later, in 2017, Armstrong and Messina planted their NETHERWORLD roots in Stone Mountain, Ga., when they purchased a 10-acre complex that now houses the massive entertainment destination that the duo has worked to grow over the last quarter-century. Two yearly haunts, a post-apocalyptic-themed laser tag arena, four epic escape room games, a monster museum and a magical Midway (a carnival-like experience with games, a foam field, food trucks offering crave-worthy snacks, roaming monsters, Instagram-worthy photo ops with props and sets, and more) can all now be found at NETHERWORLD Haunted House. Several offerings, including laser, escape and the museum, are open year-round, and the haunted houses pop up throughout the year for special occasions like Christmas and Valentine's Day. NETHERWORLD is no longer “just a haunt” open during Halloween, but a space where adventure seekers from near and far come to play. “We knew developing a haunted house would be a colossal task to take on, but we couldn't have imagined where we'd be today,” said Messina. “We've come so far. It's taken a lot of hard work and dedication over the many years, and of course, we couldn't do it without the support of our incredible staff and haunt goers. We'll always remember our 25th season, and over the coming years, we look forward to continuing to build on our dream and welcome even more surprises and offerings for visitors new and old.” Don't know the full history of NETHERWORLD? Fans can read about the innovative haunt themes from over the past 25 years, like The Colber Mansion (1997), The Harvest Man (2003), The Mangler (2008), The Gargoyle (2010), Night of the Gorgon (2019) and more, here. Read more on the 25th Anniversary themes below: RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN: Fulfilling the wishes of The Collector, a primordial monster known as The Ganoga will summon the twins, FEAR and TERROR, to lead an invasion of hideous creatures from the NETHERWORLD! Bone-crunching Berserkers and flesh-rending Rabid lead the charge, hidden deep within the swirling mists and flashing lightning of a colossal storm of shadows! Will the maelstrom conceal the crawling horrors from their helpless victims, or will they glimpse the RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN in time to flee for their lives? Featuring: The Storm of Shadows, Trapped in the Wreckage, the Fisherman's Nightmare, Eaten by the Old Ones, the Collector's Crypt, the Starving Skull, the Jaws of Fate, the Swamp of the Lost, the Maggots of Madness, the Rage of the Rabid, the Berserkers Revenge, the Goblin Horde, the Court of the Warlord and the Soul Eater Unleashed! Twenty-five years of never-ending nightmares culminate in this apocalyptic festival of destruction as guests witness the RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN! RETURN TO PLANET X: In the secret base known as the BOX, an experiment gone wrong has broken down the very fabric of time and space, releasing bizarrely colorful mutagenic energy through dimensional gateways all over the facility! Weird, malevolent life forms stalk victims throughout the complex, and the very fabric of reality is crumbling. Exobiologist Dr. Otto Gloman has gone into the rift equipped with a powered space suit to stop the horror and force it to RETURN TO PLANET X in 3D! Guests will put on special 3D glasses and help him defeat this bizarre invasion before it consumes the entire planet. Featuring: The Ghastly Gloaming, the Horror of the Hunes, the Malevolent Mutations, the Power of the Pyramid, the Secrets of the Serpent Men, the Paradox of Planet X, the Revenge of the Reptilians, the Primal Polymorphs, the Color Out of Space, the Mega Xeno Arthropod and the Nightmares from Beyond Time! Those brave enough to join the daunting mission will be pressured to retain a fragile grip on reality while viewing this world of horror through 3D glasses as they RETURN TO PLANET X. All tickets will be timed, dated, and limited. All tickets include access to both haunts, RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN and RETURN TO PLANET X in 3D. Purchasing tickets online and in advance is highly recommended to guarantee entry as walk-up/box office sales are subject to availability. SpeedPasses available to expedite entry. Masks are strongly encouraged while visiting NETHERWORLD Haunted House. Masks are, however, required to enter the House of Creeps Monster Museum, the NETHERWORLD Gift Shop and the common areas of Escape the NETHERWORLD. For more details on the haunts and to learn more about COVID-19 protocols, visit www.fearworld.com. About NETHERWORLD: Created in 1997 by Billy Messina and Ben Armstrong, veterans in the film and television industry, NETHERWORLD is Atlanta's most popular self-guided, dark attraction. Recognized as one of the most highly acclaimed haunted houses in the world, NETHERWORLD is known for its over-the-top special effects, unique makeup, elaborate costuming, skilled stunt actors and unusual themes. Since relocating to Stone Mountain in 2017, NETHERWORLD has expanded its offerings to include year-round escape games, known as Escape the NETHERWORLD, and outdoor laser tag, dubbed Laser Adventure Battle Arena. Over the years, NETHERWORLD has garnered local and national attention from media including CNN, “The Today Show,” “The Early Show,” The Travel Channel and Wall Street Journal and has been voted the top haunt in the nation by publications such as Hauntworld Magazine, Dread Central, Fangoria and USA Today. NETHERWORLD's innovative horror experience and attractions continue to draw in generations of thrill-seekers eager to see what new nightmares have been unleashed! In 2014, Dr. Kristy Sumner coupled her passion for travel, history and the paranormal when she formed Soul Sisters Paranormal, an all-female team, made up of Sumner, her two sisters and two friends. As a team of 5 investigators, Soul Sisters Paranormal traveled to some of the most historic and, reportedly, haunted location in the U.S. in an attempt to determine for themselves if spirit activity does exist and to highlight the rich history of each location The team traveled to and investigated at numerous US locations, including: the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (WV), The Lizzie Borden House (MA), the Villisca Ax Murder House (IA), the St. Augustine Lighthouse (FL), Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary (TN) and many others. During a recent Los Angeles Dodgers game, three people sprinted across the field waving banners with the names of former neighborhoods -- Bishop, La Loma and Palo Verde -- that were razed on the land that is now home to the team's stadium. The protest was an attempt to call attention to a piece of L.A. history known as the Battle of Chavez Ravine, when in the 1950s city officials displaced roughly 1,800 mostly Mexican American families from the area. Officials promised to build a new public housing complex where the families could live, but instead sold the land to the Dodgers to build a stadium. We talk about that history and Mexican Americans' deep and complicated relationship with the team.
