Disney Turned All Their Boy Brands Into Girl Brands and Doesn’t Know How To Fix Them This week on the podcast, Alien: Earth episode 3, and how Disney got rid of half the audience of their acquired brands (Marvel and Star Wars). Episode Index Intro: 0:07 K-Pop Demon Hunters: 3:00 Disney’s Boy Problems: 9:00 Alien Earth: 40:36 Disney's Boy Trouble: Studio Seeks Original IP to Win Back Gen-Z Men Amid Marvel, Lucasfilm Struggles https://variety.com/2025/film/news/disney-marvel-lucasfilm-gen-z-1236494681/ Leadership at Walt Disney Studios has been pressing Hollywood creatives in recent months, multiple sources tell Variety, for movies that will bring young men back to the brand in a meaningful way. “Young men” is defined here by sources as ages 13-28, aka Gen Z. Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu) Episode 3 – “Metamorphosis” Summary: Nibs questions Curly about why the hybrids are all named after Peter Pan characters and why Marcy gets to be Wendy. Kavalier orders the specimens be brought to Neverland Island for study, despite objections from Kirsh and Dame Sylvia. Morrow finds Smee and Slightly guarding the Xenomorph eggs and interrogates them, suspicious of their childlike behavior. He downloads the specimen data from the Maginot and plants a device on Slightly before escaping. Meanwhile, Wendy and Hermit fight the Xenomorph with a meat hook, and Wendy kills it, although both sustain serious injuries. Returning to the island, Hermit undergoes surgery, and the Sylvias tend to Wendy. Kavalier inspects the specimens until Kirsh removes him for his own protection. Atom Eins questions Smee and Slightly about their encounter with Morrow. Having escaped into New Siam, Morrow calls Yutani and insists on retrieving the specimens despite being ordered to return home. Curly confronts Kavalier about his favoritism towards Wendy, believing herself to be the best hybrid. Morrow contacts Slightly via the embedded device, convincing him to be his friend. Kirsh, Tootles, and Curly dissect a facehugger and introduce its larvae to Hermit’s lung, removed during surgery. Wendy awakens, seemingly intercepting signals from the Xenomorph eggs, which cause her pain. She ultimately collapses in the laboratory containing the eggs. Writer(s) / Director / Release Info: Written by Noah Hawley and co-creator Bob DeLaurentis, directed by Dana Gonzales. Aired August 19, 2025, on FX and FX on Hulu. Sure it's the name of this episode's beer of choice but it really does capture the moment. This week, from the nation's occupied capitol, we bring you boyfriends getting out of slumps. Connor and Christian turn things around, PCA and Kyle remember the long ball. Zach is out for the season and we learn some new medical terms. Adley is out for at least a while and we learn some contract extension terms for Samuel Basallo and see a little smack down on extending other Os. We dig deep about NYY prospect Core Jackson and look for context around his quite horrible actions in college. Maybe more opportunities to teach about lessons of the past are better than fewer. We celebrate the Little League World Series and wish we all had the poise of Monica Arcuri. And we absolutely believe the Fascist in Chief when he assures us that the millions of people coming to the US for next year's World Cup will have a “very easy time” getting in.We say, “Mistaked? Mistaken? Mistooken?” “When you throw a squirrel into the game things get a little nutty,” and “I usually save those grains of salt for margarita rims.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. When Your Child Downloads Feelings and Your Pet Alien Downloads You This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl are talking Alien: Earth. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Alien: Earth:12:30 Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu) Out of 10 When Your Child Downloads Feelings, and Your Pet Alien Downloads You Darryl: 6.8/10 Brian: 7.34/10 Episode 1 – “Neverland” Summary: In 2120, five companies control Earth and the colonized Solar System, including the recently founded Prodigy Corporation. The USCSS Maginot, a Weyland-Yutani C-class deep space research vessel, approaches Earth after a 65-year expedition to obtain extra-terrestrial specimens, among them facehuggers. On Earth, at Prodigy’s Neverland research island, a terminally ill child named Marcy Hermit becomes the first hybrid, having her consciousness transferred to an adult synthetic, and renames herself Wendy. Adjusting to her new body with the assistance of synthetic mentor Kirsh, Wendy oversees several other children who undergo the procedure. A malfunction compromises the Maginot’s navigation, placing it on a collision course with Earth. Some specimens get loose, and a grown Xenomorph kills most of the crew. It crashes into a tower in Prodigy City, New Siam, where Wendy’s human brother Joe Hermit works as a medic and corporate soldier. CEO Boy Kavalier asserts that Maginot’s contents now belong to Prodigy, and deploys Kirsh, Wendy, and the other hybrids to assist with search and rescue to test their enhanced capabilities. Security officer Morrow, who survived the crash in a reinforced panic room, moves to protect the cargo and detains two Prodigy soldiers, who are killed by a leech-like specimen. Wendy remarks to Kirsh that she wants to save her brother from death. Writer & Director: Crafted and helmed by series creator Noah Hawley. Cast: Sydney Chandler as Wendy, the first hybrid (a person who has their human consciousness transferred into a synthetic body) and Joe’s sister, formerly known as Marcy Florence Bensberg as Marcy, a terminally ill 11-year-old, and Wendy’s original human form Alex Lawther as Private Joseph D. Hermit, a medic for the Prodigy Corporation Security Service, and Wendy’s brother Essie Davis as Dame Sylvia, an employee of the Prodigy Corporation and Arthur’s wife Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, the CEO of the Prodigy Corporation and the world’s youngest trillionaire Babou Ceesay as Morrow, the USCSS Maginot’s cyborg (human with some synthetic parts) security officer Adarsh Gourav as Slightly, a hybrid Rishi Kuppa as Aarush, a terminally ill 12-year-old from Mumbai, and Slightly’s original human form Erana James as Curly, a hybrid Lily Newmark as Nibs, a hybrid Jonathan Ajayi as Smee, a hybrid David Rysdahl as Arthur Sylvia, a scientist and Dame Sylvia’s husband Diêm Camille as Siberian, a Prodigy Corporation Security Service soldier Moe Bar-El as Rashidi, a Prodigy Corporation Security Service soldier Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins, a senior employee of the Prodigy Corporation Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, the Prodigy Corporation’s synthetic chief scientist, who serves as Wendy’s mentor and trainer Air Date: August 12, 2025—simultaneously on FX and FX on Hulu. Rating & Viewership: Nielsen: Approx. 0.589 million U.S. households; 0.11 share among 18–49 demographic. Critical reception: overwhelmingly positive—IGN praised its franchise integration, Vulture gave a perfect 5/5 stars, Collider rated it 9/10, TV Fanatic also 5/5. Episode 2 – “Mr. October” Summary: Boy tells his colleague, Dame Sylvia, that he formed the Hybrid project to compete with artificial intelligence, and has granted Wendy additional abilities as he wishes to create a person smarter than him. He declines Weyland-Yutani’s request to secure Maginot’s proprietary contents, warning any incursion on his territory will be considered a hostile act. Joe is chased by a Xenomorph and separated from his colleagues. It tracks him to the higher floors of the tower, killing another soldier and massacring an apartment of wealthy residents who refused to evacuate. He is saved by Morrow, who tasers him and the Xenomorph, but it regains consciousness and escapes after killing numerous other soldiers, sparing Morrow. Arriving in Prodigy City, Hybrids Tootles, Smee, Nibs, and Curly encounter two other dangerous extraterrestrial specimens. Wendy locates her brother with Slightly, a fellow Hybrid, but Joe does not recognize her. Slightly reveals her true identity to a shocked Joe, who believed Wendy/Marcy had died. The three encounter several Xenomorph eggs and are ordered by Kirsh to contain them until a HazMat team arrives. Joe is dragged away by the Xenomorph, and Wendy chases after. Writer & Director: Written by Noah Hawley and directed by EP Dana Gonzales. Pottymouth's inner 12 year old may giggle at episode 420 but her grown up teacher self lays out MLB's drug policy and how it's changed over time and between leagues, from “smoke your way to the 40 man” to “don't show up high.” Player's weekend brought us foods on bats, some philanthropy, and nostalgia for the good old days of nicknames on jerseys. We both have fantasy team pitching woes, but there's also Junior making a name among the 21 year olds, and Zach turning that triple play. Marco's little league bat flip gets pinned and monetized. The first women's professional baseball tryouts are happening in your nation's capital this weekend. If you can navigate through all the unnecessary National Guard currently invading DC, please try to join Patti at Nats Park on Monday to watch the final games to determine who is eligible for the draft. And say what you will about the Phanatic, but he did give us the vodka solution for beating the heat.We say, “Star Warsy-looking people,” “ICE is picking up people trying to make a living mowing lawns,” and “Buy a bottle of wine for your favorite teacher.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. We celebrate the “gravity” and the “magnitude” of the moment as Jen Pawol makes history as the first woman to umpire a regular season MLB game. We also put it into the disappointing context that not only is MLB 28 years behind the NBA, but, as Chelsea James notes, we almost had robo-umps before a woman had the gig. Our continuing excellent taste in baseball boyfriends is reinforced as the Heart and Hustle winners are announced, with an 80% NCiB BF showing. The PCA report turns into a vocabulary lesson with Outs Above Average and 5-Star catches. Shea turns batting lead-off into a show and we discover a Correa/Caratini/childhood link. The NYY Old-Timers are looking a little weekend-warrior-ish but we appreciate the effort. Our crosstraining/police blotter/rant is over the dangerous and demeaning throwing of sex toys onto the court at WNBA games. Pottymouth checks in with some old friends in the LMB. And please bookmark this link to the PWHL/Tim Horton Barbie because Patti needs one for Christmas and this fantastic little fundraiser is currently sold out.We say “Hall-ish of Fame or Hall of Fame-ish?” “eye of the beardholder,” and “what's weirder? What a weekend for baseball. Patti witnesses small children in the stands absolutely take down a full grown booing adult for his poor sportsmanship, and then fireworks. Pottymouth gets a winning double header, dubious mascots, an imaginary friend, and then fireworks. Oh and also there was that trade deadline. The Os lose 100% of their Ramons and Cedrics, but their 21% of the Jacksons in the league turn a relay to throw out the runner at home. There's a whole Taylor/Tyler trade and beer fridge situation, and some pitchers commute to their new team by walking from one bullpen to another. There was a Clemens on the mound, and a Kyle taking down Yankees with big swings. Teams can't decide if they are marketing to Women, Ladies, or Girls but we think they all mean the same group of people. CLE cleans out some pitcher cubbies while the league conducts another possible career-ending gambling investigation. We decide the return of the Presidential Fitness Test is firmly in Police Blotter category. We have takes, and flashbacks. Bryce, Max, and others question the commissioner's squirrely end run around union leadership and aren't afraid to call it out. It seems Cuban girls playing softball are not a security threat but clearly their adult supervision cannot be trusted. The WBC brings the return of Dusty Baker, and a surprisingly stacked coaching staff for Venezuela. Patti recommends The Last Manager, mostly. And oh, hey, one CAN find the results of the Baseball for All Nationals in one handy place! We say, “His name is Mort and he is a casket,” “booing with his whole diaphragm,” and “extravaganza lollapalooza situations.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. To pay for his daughter Vienna's ballet school in Paris, he returns to pro golf—and chaos ensues. The film leans hard into callbacks, celebrity cameos, and legacy sequel nostalgia. Director: Kyle Newacheck Writers: Tim Herlihy & Adam Sandler Cast: Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin Ben Stiller as Hal L. (in sobriety group leadership) Bad Bunny as Happy's new caddy Benny Safdie as golf mogul Frank Manatee Additional Cast: Sunny Sandler (Vienna), Sadie Sandler, Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, John Daly, Rory McIlroy, Eminem (cameos), and more sport & music legends Production Notes: Produced by Happy Madison and STX Films, filmed in North Jersey over fall 2024; directed by Newacheck with music by Rupert Gregson-Williams. The production is built around cameo-heavy nostalgia and real-world athletes. Budget: Estimated at $30 million, modest compared to legacy sequel standards. Distribution: Released globally via Netflix on July 25, 2025. Reception: Critics remain divided—mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (65%) and Popcornmeter (~70%). Praise comes for Sandler's commitment and cameo spectacle; criticism centers on overreliance on callbacks, tonally uneven storytelling (including a shocking death), and lazy legacy sequel tropes. Some outlets called it a “cinematic disaster,” while others saw it as funny and heartfelt escapism. Rating out of 10 Cameo Filled Nostalgic Rounds of Maxi Golf Darryl: 2/10 Brian: 7.5/10 Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) Summary Set in a retro‑futuristic 1960s alternate universe (Earth‑828), Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm are already established heroes expecting their first child. Reviews praise cast chemistry, emotional grounding, and visual style—though tone is more serious than comic-minded critics expected. Some reviewers note a pacing lull and lack of overt humor from a director known for lighter work. Industry analysts call this the first confirmed MCU blockbuster of 2025—ushering in Phase 6 with confidence and momentum after previous underperformers. In a surprising twist, this week's police blotter is Little League-centric, from the policy to the personal. The entire Venezuelan Senior Little League team, made up of 13-16 year olds, was denied visas to participate in the Senior Little League World Series held in South Carolina this week. Yes, the United States broke the hearts of an entire team who not only proved themselves the best in Venezuela, then traveled to Bogotá in order to obtain visas, to then be told they are too much of a security threat to enter the US. And here at home, a player competing for the NJ Little League title was ejected from a game and then suspended for a bat flip. Which is not against the rules. “Horseplay” was added later to the “unsportsmanlike conduct” charge because even though it is in the eye of the beholder, horseplay appears in the safety rules. In boyfriend news, Pottymouth's catcher continues to be all Wong, even if her infielders are adorable (cue the drinking game). Cristopher Sanchez tosses a complete game to stay in Patti's good graces. Cal menaces more records, and Cedric's incredible game may be a swan song. Old guy Justin Turner jokes with old guy Rich Hill, while Tito and Kevin trade manager-level pranks. Nick Kurtz makes his young presence known, even if that triple is elusive. Women in Baseball Week is bracketed by the end of Baseball for All Nationals, and the lead up to the All-American Women's Baseball Classic. We say, “Italian-sized pilsner – it's shaped like a boot,” “That's a little Amish joke,” and “I get to woo, you get to woo, we both get woo.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. No kidding, the Swing Off as the ASG tiebreaker is in the collective bargaining agreement. CBAs also show up when we crosstrain with the WNBA – players are getting crap for backing off social justice activism in favor of “business.” And by business they mean negotiating their CBA. Here to tell you, fair pay is a social justice issue. We've got ASG takes – mic'd up players, unis, bling vs meaning in fashion coverage, and a crayon bat to make a statement. PCA started a new club, Kyle won't back down, and Brayan came back up. Pottymouth mourns her Diamondbacks in the rough. Thank you, owners of the Guardians and the Commanders for your “no thank you” response to the fascist in chief's directive to go back to their former, racist, team names. Travel bans and ICE activity cause the MLBPA to instruct international players to keep their immigration docs on them at all time, and have us revisiting FIFA logistics. Looks Like Antarctica Wasn’t the Only Place Superman Crashed This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl are talking about the Super(Meh) Opening Weekend Box Office, the last 3 episodes of Murderbot season 1, and they review F1. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Superman Box Office: 7:17 Murderbot: 17:00 F1: 35:55 Superman (2025) Box Office Opening weekend performance: Domestic 3‑day sitting at ~$100–130 million Worldwide debut crossed $200 million Forecasts suggest long‑term haul could reach $1 billion if word‑of‑mouth holds Overall sentiment: Some critics and audiences praised Corenswet's optimistic Superman, slick humor, and DC's tonal reset. Issues cite an overcrowded plot and CGI-heavy final act that didn't fully capitalize on its potential. Murderbot (AppleTV+) Episodes Covered: 8 “Foreign Object”, 9 “All Systems Red”, 10 The Perimeter” Highlights: Ep 8: Secrets revealed—Murderbot admits a shadowy past weaponizing its crew's memories Summary: Murderbot accompanies the PresAux team back to the habitat. The recording of the security cameras shows that in their absence, more superior SecUnits and a representative of the hostile third party—now identified as GrayCris—visited the habitat and left an invitation to meet at a rendezvous point to negotiate terms for their survival. After a security check, the PresAux team take Gurathin to the medical bay. While Bharadwaj performs surgery on Gurathin’s leg, Murderbot plugs into his data port to turn off his sense of pain. The connection allows Gurathin to find out what it calls itself, and that the SecUnit was involved in the deaths of 57 clients, which Gurathin reveals to the group and condemns Murderbot for. Murderbot admits it’s not sure if it killed the clients or not and agrees with Gurathin’s assessment that it could be defective and dangerous, then it leaves the group to go out on its own. The PresAux team concludes that GrayCris is illegally pursuing the alien remnants and that they will liquidate them once they locate their whereabouts. After mulling over whether to abandon or betray its clients, Murderbot comes back and announces that it has a plan. Ep 9: High-stakes deception! Murderbot fakes betrayal to take down GrayCris agents and saves Dr. Mensah in a cliffside showdown Summary: Murderbot puts a dangerous plan into motion, pretending to betray the PresAux team in order to leave the planet. While the team expresses doubts and tension rises, Murderbot keeps the true plan hidden: to have Gurathin hack into GrayCris’s HubSystem using a drone as a transponder and launch their emergency beacon. The ruse includes offering to help GrayCris capture the Preservation team in exchange for being listed as destroyed inventory. Murderbot stalls the enemy using awkward small talk and quotes from Sanctuary Moon, while the PresAux team manages the remote connection. As the plan begins to succeed, GrayCris prepares to torture Murderbot for the information they seek. Mensah intervenes and is caught in the crossfire. In the end, Murderbot shields her from the beacon’s launch blast, which kills the GrayCris team, nearly sacrificing itself. Before Murderbot’s systems fail, it quietly admits to itself that these humans have become its clients not just by contract, but by choice. Ep 10 (Finale): An emotional farewell—post-rescue reprogramming, autonomy restored, and Murderbot walks away into an uncertain future Summary: As Murderbot’s systems reboot, Corporation Rim technicians delete its memory and install a new governor module. At the same time, the PresAux team negotiates with company representatives to find the SecUnit. They offer to buy it and threaten with a lawsuit, but the company refuses, telling them that its memory has been wiped anyway. So Pin-Lee files an injunction to seize Murderbot for evidentiary reasons, while Gurathin manages to retrieve the data that was downloaded during the memory wipe. He locates Murderbot’s personality files by searching Sanctuary Moon episodes. The team saves Murderbot from being destroyed, and Gurathin uploads its personality. It recognises that without its armour it looks like an augmented human. The team invites Murderbot to live as a free agent on their home planet. That night, Murderbot attempts to sneak away but is intercepted by Gurathin, who tries to make it feel welcome. Murderbot insists that it needs to check the perimeter. When Gurathin relents, Murderbot thanks him. Posing as a servant bot, it boards a transport ship that departs as Mensah awakens and realises that it has left. Again, we have publicly committed to predictions an hour before the (all NCiB Boyfriend) Home Run Derby begins, that you won't hear until you already know who won. How'd we do? We also check in on our pre-season predictions on standings and individual awards and learn that while some are just as terrible as history has taught us to expect, we are surprisingly right on in some places. Those places are not the American League. We've got some pretty good running “for a catcher,” more benchmarks for PCA, Kyle treating OPACY like home, and some pretty irate Phillies. Congrats to Tito Francona for winning #2000! We wonder what's in the HS drinking fountain water in Oklahoma that produced the #1 and #4 picks in this year's draft. More commitments in the WBC, and some travel ban cross-training with FIFA.We say, “It's just not aerodynamic when your shirt is unbuttoned so far,” “His golf caddies have named him Pelé,” and “How do you solve a problem like Pottymouth?” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. This is Truly a Soy Latte Drinking Superman This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl are joined by the one and only Cousin Kenny to talk about the 2025 DC Studios film Superman: Legacy. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Superman: 5:35 Superman: Legacy (2025) Summary James Gunn reboots the Man of Steel with David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent—not an origin story, but a story of an established hero dealing with political intrigue, social media hate campaigns, and survival in a fractured world. The film blends humor and cosmic stakes as Superman relies on allies like Krypto, the Justice Gang (Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Metamorpho), and Lois Lane to stop Lex Luthor's manipulative war plot. Director & Writer: James Gunn (yes, both) Cast: David Corenswet (Superman) Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern) Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen) Bradley Cooper (Jor‑El) Neva Howell (Martha Kent) Pruitt Taylor‑Vince (Jonathan Kent) Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) Milly Alcock (Supergirl), along with Krypto the superdog Production Notes: Produced by DC Studios under James Gunn & Peter Safran; filmed in Norway and Cleveland (superhero street cred points awarded); visual effects helmed by Stéphane Ceretti with costume design honoring Kingdom Come comic aesthetics. Budget & Box Office Projections (as of July 9, 2025): Budget approx. $225 million Opening weekend projections vary from $100M–$130M domestic to $200M+ worldwide, with some forecasts topping $1 billion in total gross if word-of-mouth holds up. Reactions: Critics love its comic-book tone, strong lead performance, and refreshing humor—Rotten Tomatoes sits around 86–91%, calling it “one of DC's best since Batman '89.” Common criticisms include overstuffed plot, chaotic visuals in the final act, and a tone that may alienate some legacy fans. At this point we can't tell the difference between crosstraining and the Police Blotter. We have travel bans, trans bans, international volleyball, collegiate swimming, and harmful decisions. We also have a WNBA player insulting Patti's hometown, but Patti takes the high road and offers help with geography and, well, words. As we approach the All Star break we have Cal and Woody both doing Barry Bonds things. We've got Pete being veteran-level thoughtful and also playing impossible defense. Kody proves Pottymouth makes some good decisions, but she checks the math to be sure. The Nats fire their manager and their GM while your hosts are on the metro returning from Nats Park. No lie, that felt weird. The Dodgers are getting it from all sides Nezza points out some double standards re free speech at the stadium, and the team gets hit with a We Don't Like You Promoting the Civil Rights of people who are not straight white males Complaint. It was actually listed as a “Civil Rights Complaint” but we feel they left out some important words. The Serie del Caribe lets the kids play, the WBC lets the boyfriends play, and the WPBL invites all the best women baseball players to DC next month to prove they can, and should, play.We say, “I'm going younger and funner,” “Not quite at the singing level of beer consumption,” and “Giant colonization murder board.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Since last week we've been to Pride night, and Pottymouth has checked out the Smokies new ballpark, and crosstrained with Bananaball. Patti opted out on Bananaball because there are two kinds of people in the world. Although Cosmic Baseball could be a thing… The All Star Game is loaded with former boyfriends and just a few new ones, and the Derby could be all our guys. Congrats to Justin Verlander on what must be a very beautiful new baby, and thanks for the timing which let Brett Wisely back up to the bigs. More fans behaving badly, this time to Ketel Marte, and good work to the hometown fans for much-needed support. Police Blotter and more crosstraining as we report on horrible men in two sports. Franco gets away with abhorrent deeds and Tucker denies it all. More World Baseball Classic participants are announced and we are eyeing a trip to Puerto Rico. And thank you, Trea Turner, for not ticking off the baseball gods.We say, “I went and did the Banana thing,” “A light beer but way more of it so the math should work,” and “Whiskey with the Canadians in the basement.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. When it is a thousand degrees outside, Elly gets sick on the field and then homers, and we just stay in the air conditioning and curse climate change. Geaux Tigers! Congrats to LSU on their College World Series win, fair and square, unlike the suspicious victory in the Jello Shot Challenge for charity (we're looking at you, Paul and Livy). The Dodgers just have so much going on trying to overcome the bad press about staying mum as the city burns. They are donating a million dollars, but for what exactly? Did they prevent ICE from entering the ballpark grounds? Nezza disregards the directive and sings the anthem in Spanish. And still no other players speak out. Terry Francona continues to charm, and Harry Caray's grandson reminds us to keep the L in “flag.” Manny inspires Andy to greatness and a new nickname. Woody keeps topping out at 451' homers. Cal Raleigh is quietly shattering records. A horrific foul ball to the dugout incident brings a ballpark together, and we wish Hunter Bigge a full recovery. No Script, No Mercy, No Spoilers James Gunn says the quiet part out loud about Marvel's mess, Murderbot unravels in episode 6, and we talk Mobland and Flora & Son in our “What We're Watching” segment. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 James Gunn: 9:11 Murderbot: 31:40 What We’re Watching: 41:57 James Gunn Talks Movies Gunn warns the movie industry is “dying” because studios are ditching finished scripts in favor of chasing deadlines. He pointed to Disney's mandate to ramp up Marvel content as destructive: “That wasn't fair…it killed them”. When Mensah is having a panic attack, Murderbot calms her down by showing her an episode of the show. They manage to repair the hopper using neural fibers from Murderbot’s spinal cord. Meanwhile at the habitat, Leebeebee tries to get more information about the results of the Preservation survey. When Gurathin refuses to show her the data, she produces a gun, shoots him in the knee, and threatens rest of the team. She admits that she is not a member of DeltFall, but of the third party. Murderbot returns and kills Leebeebee immediately, which leaves the Preservation team in shock. While it gets repaired, Murderbot muses that the others had assumed that it was becoming like them, and that it actually felt good to execute Leebeebee. I started my self-employment journey by freelancing… but somehow I've never talked about it on the pod!So today I'm joined by Sarah Jutras of Huzzah Studio and Freelance for Life to dive into how to build a freelance career and/or land a few gigs to make ends meet.Together we unpack a few common Qs, including:What is freelancing?
Feels like a Father's Day episode what with weaponry gone awry, novelty shirts made from petroleum products, and Caddyshack references. PCA hits them high and low, and Woody hits them where they don't usually go. Cutch passes Clemente, Manny sneaks up on 2000, and we've got more bfs on the IL than the bench. The Contreras brothers (Contrarians?) do something rare. Kiké speaks out even though the LAD do not, and we note how women's leagues do not hesitate to take a stand. And we crosstrain by buying Immigrant City FC shirts. MLB players speak out about how sports betting has changed fan interactions for the worse. Those nice BOS newlyweds give the Pope a CWS cap and now you know what the regulation Pope headgear is called and why there's a sunroof in the Popemobile. MCU tries to reset, Murderbot tries to escape emotional damage. This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl break down Captain America: Brave New World, where Sam Wilson's shield meets political paranoia and a very red, very angry Hulk. Then it's back into the soap-operatic arms of Murderbot, as Episode 5 serves up sabotage, sass, and an unexpected anatomy lesson. One's trying to save the world, the other just wants to be left alone with their shows—and honestly, we relate. When my business becomes overwhelming, I turn my focus to my systems. Why? Because systems are the how of everything I do in my work and life. I have a system for doing my laundry, a system for checking my inbox, and a system for making this podcast. And even when I have no system for doing something… that's still a no-system system!Designing my systems with myself in mind has made my life so much better. And I really want that for you too!So this week on the podcast, I'm joined by brigitte, a neurodivergent systems witch who's here to help us all get through our work day with more ease.Tune in to learn:What systems are & who needs themHow to design systems that serve us instead of the status quoExamples of systems from brigitte & Amelia's businessesHow we can embed our values in our systemsBrigitte's 7-step process for creating your own systems! Did you notice that as soon as your favorite team has a series in Tampa or Sacramento, there is a “news” story that sounds like Yelp reviews of the non-major-league facilities? It would have been a 10 if not for the batter's box. Swirling and unpredictable. You get it. Pottymouth swears Junior has a sixth tool but she never comes right out and says what it is. It might be a camp! Or bobbleheads! Her pitching flock has been reduced to Diamondbacks in the rough. Patti is amused that there are stories predicting that 24 year old Cedanne may one day be the next 23 year old Pete. And is Adley hitting better because of losing the toe tap or because Patti benched him for a game? We ponder the motivation of old guys grinding it out in the minors. The police blotter checks in on the ongoing Wander Franco trial, and the terrible defacing of the Robinson and Miñoso mural in Miami. Geaux Tigers! The takeaway from Nationals Night Out is that if you are going to pitch in heels, for god's sake, PRACTICE in heels. We say, “13 is a lot. 14 is more,” “J. Murderbot Is Fine, Everyone Else Is Screwed This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl dig into episode 4 of Murderbot, where everyone's favorite emotionally repressed robot finally snaps—soap opera hallucinations included. Then it's time to kick off Movie Summer 2025 with early buzz (and warning signs) around Superman and Fantastic Four, plus some movie messiness that smells like panic reshoots. And finally, we take a steel chair to WWE's latest release spree—R-Truth, Carlito, and maybe even The Miz? Say it ain't so. This episode fueled by cuxa in tiny teacups – perhaps a result of taking a clown visiting from Guatemala to an Orioles game and gifting him a “Relish” t shirt, or just another Sunday. Junior sets a record for under-22s. Woody sets a record for no more than 22s, and PCA (at 23) just sets the pace. Kids today! Kody with a K finds a home with MIN, and we sort out all the Victors. Oneil hits them hard and far, and Freddy hits the life-changers. The police blotter is overflowing what with the wife of Luis Arraez engaging in questionable promotions in dangerous times, Wander promoting himself questionably, and Dodger Stadium dropping rocks on NYY fans. The road to the College World Series is underway and Pottymouth is already wearing the purple. “Wait, the reason you cut your hair was for 2 dudes?” It's officially our 6th anniversary! That's right, 6 years of metal discussions, ludicrous nonsense, and beers of the episode, and what better way to wrap up our 6th year in podcasting excellence than with STEEL PANTHER, the parody band that helped make 80's hair metal FUN again, with every hyperbolic metal cliché you can think of that makes them the epitome of everything that made late 80's hair metal so awesome. If S.O.D. is thrash metal with a generous side of hilarity, then STEEL PANTHER is quite obviously their hair metal counterpart. Find out what happened “three or four days later…after the crying stopped”, discover which Slayer song is considered their “ballad”, understand why it's healthy and fun to maintain the silliness of your youth as you get older and JOIN US as we celebrate 6 years of metal and nonsense by going deep INSIDE THE METAL of a band that blends hair metal and nonsense together on a level that our inner 8th grader would have greatly appreciated with the kings of L.A. hair metal absurdity, STEEL PANTHER. Welcome to Off the Grid CPG edition!
In which we declare “McCullered” a verb and Patti references songs from both 1862 and 1985. The merry, merry month of May gives us records set by both Pete Crow-Armstrong and Jasson Dominguez. COL and Pottymouth welcome the return of Ezequiel Tovar, and there's just so much Soto to discuss. Liam Hendriks says the kind of death threats experienced by Lance McCullers are horrifyingly common and absolutely fed by sports betting. Underage drinking is now a part of the incident resulting in serious injuries to a fan falling from the stands in PNC park. COL may have set a record for losses in 50 games and have a fan suing them for being bad, but at least their security staff is trying to keep opposing players out of the ballpark. Previously McCullered Tim McGraw is headlining the Speedway Classic featuring CIN vs ATL in August. We crosstrain with ice dancing and encourage you to read this piece about gender “complexities” in that sport. We may reference a little light, harmless voter fraud. We say, “Punk bands aren't afraid of anything,” “It's like a homerun derby, but there's a lot of defense,” and “We ain't gonna play Sun City.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Popping in with a behind-the-scenes bonus episode — where Jen Carrington and I pull back the curtain on everything that's been messy, feel-bad, and chaotic in our businesses this year! We talk about exactly how much our revenue is down, the problems we've diagnosed with our marketing and messaging, and what we're focusing on to stay in business through 2025 and beyond. Tune in to feel seen, heard, and (hopefully) less alone.
Rated R for Romance and Robots This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl kick things off with a live trailer watch of Ironheart—because nothing says excitement like corporate-mandated teen genius content. Then it's a double feature of cinematic chaos with reviews of Love Hurts (aka “What if John Wick cried more?”) and Novocaine (the feel-nothing action movie we didn't know we needed). We talk about community all the time on this show. But what does it actually look like when relationships change the trajectory of your creative career? In this episode, I'm joined by Lauren LoGrasso to unpack all the relationships that led her to her current roles as an award-winning podcaster, producer of We Can Do Hard Things, and VP of Programming and Development at Audacy. Those relationships range from a random guy in Indiana to the agent who dumped her when she moved to LA to her “radio Jesus” who opened the door to everything Lauren is doing today.Tune in as we map how a creative career is built in real-time. You'll hear all about:How Lauren landed an internship on the Ellen show & the slump that followed her early successWhy it's important to learn all the angles of your jobHow Lauren nurtures & unleashes her creativityAmelia's dance between being practical & being delusionalWhy we have to stop rebranding disappointment as failureTwo ways to reclaim your voice from “creative monsters” And stay tuned to the end where Lauren guides us through a self-love + inner child healing practice!RESOURCES + LINKS
I'll take unlikely pitchers to strike out Shohei Ohtani for 200 please. We let Sally Jenkins and Jake Mintz take the lead on the “permanent ends when you're dead” rant re Pete and the other formerly permanently ineligibles. Will Andy Pages be the player that gets Pottymouth to manage her fantasy team more closely? Maybe! Patti's team is again short a 3rd baseman but the math is working out. PCA's newest stats are rivaling those of the new Pope for Chicago-based excitement. We thought the BOS gag was going to be Who's On First but it turned out to be who is in the outfield because the new City Connects are Fenway camo for the guys near the wall. Kudos to the second place finisher in a Maine high school track event for calling out Rep. Laurel Libby as a bully for “maligning” the trans-identified athlete who won the event. And we crosstrain with ornithology because even after Brandon Hyde got fired only one kind of oriole is fun to watch right now.We say, “I wanna piggyback on the joy,” “who wouldn't want to swing a rainbow banner?” and “I hate it when drag queens make me cry.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. On this episode of Heard Tell, host Andrew shares some thoughts on the news that former President Joe Biden has cancer, and how once again the news media, social media, and the interwebs just can't seem to discuss death, illness, mortality, politics, and and culture in the same sphere at the same time without everyone involved embarrassing themselves. All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell.Andrew's piece on the Joe Biden situation:https://heardtell.substack.com/p/joe-biden-the-man-interrupts-joe?r=17xgaAndrew's appearance on Fox5 DC regarding Joe Biden from prior to the cancer announcment.https://youtu.be/n7rnW2r2hB4--------------------Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inboxhttps://heardtell.substack.com/Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? Yup, an actual text sent by Patti to the Pottymouth because the new Pope is a legit sports fan. And oh how Chicago is enjoying that! We've got some nods to Mothers Day – badass Veronica Alvarez is gifted maternity baseball pants, Jace and Josh's mom gets to wear a split jersey to watch them face off on a major league field, and Pottymouth gets a hat. That Patti gets to wear. Jasson Dominguez overtakes a record previously held by Joe DiMaggio. Jackson Merrill says “daddy ball” and something mysterious that we can only guess at, and Andy Pages takes the real job. Some Houston fans overstep into dangerous and hateful territory over Lance McCullers. PIT can't catch a break anywhere, from fans, stadium staff, or managers. Rafael Devers is in need of some Crash Davis to get himself together. And Ayami Sato pitches for the Maple Leafs (the baseball ones, not the hockey ones). Pottymouth invites local friends of the show to Patti's birthday party. It's a two homonym day on the show, see if you can spot them both!We say, “You're not really wearing pants,” “Tennis and Wordle. One of these things is not a sport,” and, “All he had to learn was to *not* do something.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com.
