David Samson, former MLB executive and host of Nothing Personal, joins Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker to forecast the sustainability of the Cubs, Tigers and Padres' hot starts to the season. The trio take a trip around the league to discuss Aaron Judge's case as the best hitter in baseball, if there's any truth to certain players being "slow starters", Juan Soto's comments about the Mets' lineup protection, the fallout from Jarred Kelenic's lack of hustle, and the Marlins' farm system calling pitches from the dugout. After the break, National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Billy Wagner (30:17) joins the program! He shares how life has changed since getting the call to the Hall, his enjoyment of teaching the next generation, and his inspirations growing up on the mound. Billy wraps up with thoughts on his son Will's MLB journey so far and offers some advice for the road ahead. It looks like Rob Saleh is going back to San Francisco. Gio wonders if Aaron Glenn should call Saleh for advice on coaching for the Jets. Boomer said he should not. The Saints, Raiders and Cowboys still need head coaches. Is Pete Carroll getting one of these jobs? A woman who lives in Orchard Park calls in to give a Buffalo Bills report. She has 4 feet of snow in her driveway. Gio is not impressed with Sean McDermott. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Jalen Hurts talking about the Washington defense. Tom Brady talked about what you need to succeed in the NFL and he's referencing Jayden Daniels. Patrick Mahomes talked about having to play your best football in the biggest moments. Josh Allen is confident in being able to win in KC. Stephen A. Smith was on the Howard Stern Show and talked about being more popular than the athletes he covers. Billy Wagner got emotional at the press conference for the Hall of Fame. Ichiro would like to have a drink with the one person who didn't vote for him. The Rangers beat the Flyers which Boomer loves. In the final segment of the hour, Gio saw a car on fire on the L.I.E on his way in. Gio wonders how a car catches fire on a highway. Our makeup artist, Aly, took a pic of it on the way in and Gio wondered why she did that.
Hour 1 Boomer hopes that the Jets let Aaron Glenn hire his own staff. Based on some of the names out there, Boomer's not so sure that's happening. Keyshawn Johnson, who was a teammate of Glenn while on the Jets, said there is no way he's bringing Aaron Rodgers back. Jerry is here for his first update of the day, and starts with Liam Coen doing an about face and will become the head coach in Jacksonville. Washington's defensive coordinator talked about treating Jalen Hurts like a RB and hitting him that way. The KC defense talked about the threat of Josh Allen. Amari Cooper was asked if he's satisfied with the amount of catches he's been getting. Jerry went around the NBA last night. The Rangers beat the Flyers so Boomer is happy. In the final segment of the hour, Pete Alonso is supposedly deep into talks with the Toronto Bluejays. He's a fan favorite, but perhaps he's not a favorite in the locker room. Who knows? Hour 2 The National Championship game between Notre Dame and Ohio State didn't have as many viewers as expected. That could be because while it was happening, Trump was doing a press conference where he was taking questions. It also wasn't a very close game most of the way. Boomer thinks Jalen Hurts is hanging onto the ball too long, the same way Sam Darnold did his last 2 games. Hurts does not look like the QB who had a great performance in the Super Bowl a few years ago. Jerry returns for an update, but first Gio said if Saquon Barkley wins a Super Bowl, this will officially be the worst season in the Giants 100 year history. Brian Schottenheimer will likely be the next Cowboys coach and maybe Rex Ryan will be the defensive coordinator. Andy Reid is looking forward to the challenge of playing Buffalo. Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward did their best Boomer & Phil Simms impression as they talked to each other about each other. Joe Benigno wants Pete Alonso back and he blames Stearns and Cohen. He also said, ‘screw Vlad Guerrero, I want my guy'. We heard audio of Ohtani's interpreter calling a bank pretending to be Ohtani looking for a $200,000 withdrawal. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer heard a sports argument in the hallways in the 5am hour. Gio is ashamed to say, he was part of the argument, which he hates. He was arguing with C-Mac about his takes on the Commanders/Lions game. Hour 3 It looks like Rob Saleh is going back to San Francisco. Hour 4 Gio has stopped believing ‘this is the year', as he's been burned by that many times. People are saying that now about the Bills. They said it about the Lions before last week. Boomer is very impressed with Jayden Daniels rookie season in getting them to the Championship game. We broke down both Championship games and turnovers and all that stuff. Boomer w ...

Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner, will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker in the MLB Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Is it easier to get 400 baseball writers to all agree on who is a Hall of Famer or 30 Major League Baseball owners to agree on ways to address skyrocketing payroll disparity? That's the question that begins a brand new episode of the Best Podcast in Baseball. Esteemed baseball writer Tyler Kepner, of The Athletic and formerly with the New York Times, joins host Derrick Goold to discuss Ichiro Suzuki and his peers in the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. It's a robust class that includes a top left-handed starter CC Sabathia who got elected on his first ballot and a top left-handed reliever Billy Wagner who got elected on his final ballot. The class also includes Dick Allen and Dave Parker to further reveal the many numerous routes available to players to reach induction in Cooperstown. There is the expressway that Suzuki takes with near unanimous support. There is the state two-lane highway that will likely welcome switc-hitter Carlos Beltran to Cooperstown in 2026, and then there's the country roads that Wagner had to drive to ultimately reach immortality. All of which brings us to the crossroads currently facing baseball. With the Dodgers spending freely and collecting all of the talent, is the only way deep into October through Los Angeles? The two baseball writers discuss the widening gap in the game and explore one reason for the dramatic change (hint: shrinking small- and mid-market television revenues) -- and whether there will be a correction in a few years. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It appears weekly wherever you subscribe or listen to podcasts and is part of the newspaper's Constant Cardinals Coverage.

Rundown [Intro] How's the weather in your neck of the woods? [4:07] Ichiro, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner are voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jim Margalus isn't exactly thrilled with Wagner's selection. Why it's tough to grade closers when it comes to overall greatness. James Fegan also shares his theory on how Ichiro was one vote shy of being a unanimous selection. [18:51] Carlos Beltran and Andruw Jones missed the cut. With a weak 2026 class, do they get the necessary votes to make the hall next year? [29:50] According to FanGraphs, the estimated luxury tax payroll for the Los Angeles Dodgers is around $370 million, or $290 million more than the Chicago White Sox. Why their spending spree will cause friction among owners even though it does come off as whining. Especially with the Dodgers injury history. [53:40] Remembering Jeff Torborg and Bob Uecker. Word of the Day is Unconventional (0:00-13:32) Do not eat the $50 snow from the Rams Divisional game. It is not safe for consumption, due to many factors. We head back to the phones as we continue ten second song. (13:32-21:01) The Commanders defense was leaking vs the Lions. They allowed 7.7 yards per carry vs the Lions and now they face the best rushing attack in the NFL. Yet the national media wants to bring all the attention to the Eagles passing attack. (21:01-33:03) The Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2025 has been announced. The new class includes Billy Wagner, CC Sabathia and Ichiro who will be enshrined during the summertime. Chase Utley landed at 39.8% and is trending upwards to be in the Hall of Fame soon. (33:03-41:35) All the NFC East teams have made an NFC Championship game, except the one and only Dallas Cowboys. It is surprising that Washington was able to reboot after years of mediocrity and excel past the Cowboys. Thrill and EB talk about the baseball Hall of Fame, specifically the election of Ichiro, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner. The conversation turns to the voting process for the Hall of Fame and how it's flawed, with some arguing that players should have a say in who gets in.
The dream offseason that the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers are having continued with the signing of prized Japanese ace Roki Sasaki, right before agreeing to a deal with star closer Tanner Scott. As the Dodgers continue to assemble a team that resembles something out of a video game, many are wondering if this is good for the game of baseball.Jake Mintz is joined by senior writer from The Athletic, Andy McCullough, as they discuss whether Los Angeles' spending is going a bit too far and whether it could force the league to consider a spending cap in future CBA negotiations. They also talk about why the Dodgers are in a position where they can take a risk on acquiring a reliever like Tanner Scott in a way that other teams might not be willing to.Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake and Andy discuss the Toronto Blue Jays finally landing the slugger they've been after in Anthony Santander and why they might be having a sneaky good offseason that could help them land a postseason spot come October. They also get into the Baseball Hall of Fame election announcement, which will likely include Ichiro Suzuki, C.C. Sabathia, and Billy Wagner all being elected. (1:39) - The Opener - Roki Sasaki to the Dodgers(20:27) - Dodgers sign Tanner Scott(26:22) - Is LA's spending bad for baseball?(42:05) - One Dumb Question - A salary cap in baseball?(50:11) - Around The League - Santander to Toronto(54:41) - Hall of Fame election night Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

We are eight days away from finding out who will be in the Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2025, and while there will surely be a few slam-dunk first-ballot inductees, there will also be one player who is trying to get in on his tenth and final try.Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss the possibility of Ichiro Suzuki becoming the first position player to obtain 100% of the vote, whether CC Sabathia will be elected as a first-ballot Hall of Famer or have to wait a year and if Billy Wagner will finally join the club on his last ballot. All three are trending in the right direction, but we'll have to wait until January 21st to see. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys open up the BBQ Mailbag and answer some of your questions, including Justin Verlander's apparent love of the color orange, when players stop trying to get inside-the-park home runs and if MLB could incorporate some mystery into the next Home Run Derby to add a little juice to the competition.
