Tek & Prem welcome Bob Vetrone Jr. of Boop Stats on the VetLine to talk Birds and Phils. He also gives us some Veterans Stadium History and great memories. The Eagles start the regular season in just 3 weeks against the Cowboys at home, as the campaign to repeat as Super Bowl Champions commences. With Preseason Game #2 approaching versus Cleveland, the questions mostly surround the composition and effectiveness of the secondary. The backup QB McKee was spectacular in the first Preseason Game. Possibly the team's only true weakness, someone will either have to emerge as the "guy" in the secondary, or Howie may have to make another move to solidify it. The Phillies lead the NL East by 5 games as we enter the latter half of August. The freefalling Mets cannot stay on track and are losers of 9 of 10. The outfield shuffle is of great debate, but one thing is certain, Jhoan Duran is the real deal. Segments include: VetPhact, VetLine. Courtesy of the Vet Alumni Members Association (VAMA)
00:00-25:00: Baseball great/Ferrum assistant baseball coach Darren Hodges joins the show to chat about his career, seeing the 90's Yankee prospects while in the system, Andy Pettitte having big league stuff early, Derek Jeter's will at an early age, his connection with Billy Wagner going back years at Ferrum, what the Ferrum story really is, if you're good, you're good, the game today and why it's so frustrating, the brutal NY Yankees and what needs to change and more.
The Philadelphia Eagles are in the midst of training camp, Howie Roseman has made a trade to bolster the defense, and the offense is currently cooking on all cylinders. Expectations are high for the Birds this season for sure coming off a Super Bowl win. This week, Alexis Chassen from BleedingGreenNation.com joined the podcast show for a deep dive into what we've been seeing during camp, as well as storylines and players to keep our eyes on. It was a fantastic discussion! But first, the guys dove into a ton of Major League Baseball and Phillies talk. The worst umpire call this year, Dick Allen and Billy Wagner were selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and listener feedback about the Phillies trades and farm system. Plus, are the Phils getting too hot, too early before the postseason? (Approx. 5:50)From there, they discussed the news of ESPN acquiring the NFL Network and other NFL-based assets like the NFL Draft. What does this mean for sports journalism and reporting? (Approx. 30:10)The guys then dove into the Eagles defensive trade where Howie Roseman sent DT Thomas Booker IV to the Raiders for CB Jakorian Bennett. (Approx. 34:20)What they threw down on the Table this week was a great, in-depth discussion with Alexis Chassen from Bleeding Green Nation about what we have been seeing in training camp from the Eagles on both sides of the ball. What should we make of CB No. 2? Should fans be concerned about the pass rush? Will the offensive line be as dominant as it usually is? How can Jalen Hurts continue to develop the Eagles passing game? All of this and much more this week on the Table! Send us a textIchiro Suzuki gave a great speech at the induction ceremony last weekend in Cooperstown. So did C.C. Sabathia and Billy Wagner. Willa Allen gave a nice tribute to the late great Dick (don't call me Richie) Allen and Dave Parker's brother painted a more accurate pitcher of the Cobra. The largest crowd ever to attend a regular season #MLB game at Bristol Speedway in Tennessee got rained out on Saturday night - 91,000+ fans attended breaking the record set in 1954 in Cleveland in a game vs. the #Yankees. The #Braves won on Sunday 4-2 and home runs were celebrated with a 'Home Run' car going around the oval. That was cool. Trading deadline had so many teams picking up relief pitchers that can help them for the stretch drive and for the playoffs. #Padres, #Phillies, #Mets, #Yankees, all made significant improvements to their bullpens. Eugenio Suarez also was moved back to #Mariners and with Cal 'Big Dumper' Raleigh the M's have power they have not had in a long time to go with their excellent pitching. Is Jimmy Rollins a HOFer? He's now in the Phillies HOF as he was inducted this past weekend. Waste pitches used to refer to pitches thrown in a 0-2 count. Now there are means to evaluate how untempting some of those non-competitive pitchers are. Emmauel Clase of the #Guardians along with his teammate Luis Ortiz have cleaned out their lockers as the advanced metrics may have uncovered a gambling scheme. We talk about strike zone shadow zones and how pitchers can overdo trying to get the batter to go fishing. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! This week's MLB Pipeline Podcast comes between Deadlines, with the Draft signing deadline in our rearview and the Trade Deadline just a couple of days away. Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff start with the former, with Jim and Jonathan drafting Top 100 prospects they think could be dealt ahead of Thursday's Trade Deadline, then discussing some of the ranked prospects who have already changed teams. From there, the guys review the Draft signing deadline, highlighting that just two of the players selected in the top 10 rounds didn't sign. Then the pod turned to the past to provide prospect snapshots of the recent Hall of Fame induction class, including Dave Parker, Billy Wagner, CC Sabathia and Ichiro. The Yankees' tumultuous season got a bit more challenging this weekend as they lost their star to injury. The best player in baseball, Aaron Judge, is out for the foreseeable future with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He did not tear his UCL, but the fear of preventing that may cause the Yankees to proceed with caution when figuring out a timetable for his return. Coming off of a series loss to the Phillies, how will the Yankees adjust going forward, and will we see Judge again this year? Jake and Jordan discuss all of the possibilities and share their thoughts about what they think should happen.Slightly over a year ago, Nick Kurtz was getting drafted out of Wake Forest. Now, Kurtz is not only playing in the majors, but he just made MLB history. Kurtz became the first rookie ever to hit four home runs in a major league game. "The Big Amish," Kurtz's nickname despite the fact that he is not Amish, went 6-for-6 with 4 HR, 8 RBI and 19 total bases vs. the Houston Astros on Friday night. Although Jacob Wilson has taken most of the headlines for the A's, they have another star in Kurtz. The guys discuss his historic game, his impressive last couple of months and what the future looks like for the young slugger. While a rookie was etching his name into the record books this weekend, some MLB legends were being immortalized into baseball history. 00:00-15:00: Is Billy Wagner a Hall of Famer?
David Samson, former MLB executive and host of Nothing Personal, joins Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker to forecast the sustainability of the Cubs, Tigers and Padres' hot starts to the season. The trio take a trip around the league to discuss Aaron Judge's case as the best hitter in baseball, if there's any truth to certain players being "slow starters", Juan Soto's comments about the Mets' lineup protection, the fallout from Jarred Kelenic's lack of hustle, and the Marlins' farm system calling pitches from the dugout. After the break, National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Billy Wagner (30:17) joins the program! He shares how life has changed since getting the call to the Hall, his enjoyment of teaching the next generation, and his inspirations growing up on the mound. Billy wraps up with thoughts on his son Will's MLB journey so far and offers some advice for the road ahead. The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced its latest class of enshrinees on Tuesday evening. Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner, will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker in the MLB Hall of Fame Class of 2024. But as those stars are enshrined in Cooperstown, we remember a baseball legend we lost recently. RIcky Henderson passed away on December 20th, at 65 years of age, just days before his 66th birthday. The game's greatest lead off hitter, base stealer, and as the inventor of swagger, Rickey's impact can still be felt now. So today we are joined by Howard Bryant - The author of Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original, who breaks down Ricky's career, legacy, and impact on the game he changed forever.
