Put the champagne on ice. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' tense win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, which reduced the Giants' magic number to clinch the NL West to two. It was an extremely ugly first inning for the Giants, but they rebounded to sweep the D-backs with a walk-off single by Late Night LaMonte Wade Jr. in the bottom of the 9th. Scott Kazmir started, and only lasted 1/3 of an inning. He walked two, there was sloppy defense by Austin Slater, and he ended up straining his hamstring covering first base. But the Giants' offense, led by Slater, Darin Ruf, Buster Posey, and Brandon Crawford, got to Madison Bumgarner, who was making his first start back in San Francisco in front of fans.Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTubeSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that Evan Longoria is going to miss 4-6 weeks with a left shoulder sprain, an injury he sustained after colliding with Brandon Crawford in the 9th inning of Saturday's win against the Cubs. The Giants have been ravaged by injuries in 2021, and losing Longoria is among their biggest blows. They're also currently missing Tommy La Stella, Brandon Belt, Mike Yastrzemski, Logan Webb, and several others. Players like LaMonte Wade Jr., Jason Vosler, and Steven Duggar have filled in admirably in their absence. The second thing we learned is that the Giants may call up a young starter for Wednesday's game. Webb is on the IL, and Scott Kazmir and Nick Tropeano were recently DFA'd, so it may be Sam Long or Matt Frisbee to start Wednesday against the Rangers. The third thing we learned is some unfortunate news about Giants play-by-play announcer Duane Kuiper. Kuiper announced via the Giants on Monday that he has a medical condition that will require immediate chemotherapy treatment, and that he may miss broadcasts. Obviously, our hearts go out to Kuiper and we wish him nothing but the best and a full and speedy recovery from his condition.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Jack is pleased to welcome rising sports media star and writer at Outkick.com, Gary Sheffield Jr., to the podcast, to help recap the weekend that was in the world of sports. Phil Mickelson has shocked the world and won the PGA Championship at the age of 50 (0:00 - 12:20); Gary and Jack share their thoughts. Then, they make way for a lengthy discussion centered around the Chicago White Sox and manager Tony La Russa, who received a lot of criticism over the last week following some comments he made after Yermin Mercedes swung through a take sign on a 3-0 count in the 9th inning of a blowout of the Twins. Jack feels that some of the media's coverage of the incident (and the ensuing takes that came shortly after) were overblown, and that the Sox are in a great spot. What does Gary think (12:20 - 40:35)? Up next, we had two no-hitters thrown last week, on back-to-back nights. What gives with all the no-no's, and how does the league's surplus of no-hitters reflect upon the state of the game of baseball (40:35 - 52:40)? The Tampa Bay Rays made a surprising deal on Friday, shipping shortstop Willy Adames to the Milwaukee Brewers; will we see baseball's no. 1 prospect Wander Franco at the major league level soon, as the Rays stretch their win-streak to 10 (52:40 - 57:55)? Then, Gary and Jack run through the weekend's scores from across the league, and recap some stories you may have missed, including Pujols' first week with the Dodgers, Scott Kazmir's first MLB appearance since 2016, Shohei Ohtani losing velocity on his fastball, and Christian Yelich's return to the Brewers' lineup. Along the way, they also chat about potential trade deadline buyers and sellers, the Mets' recent slide, the Braves' potential to turn the corner, and much, much more! Country Westerns self-titled debut album released last summer and later landed on many best-of 2020 lists, including our own (Ep. 43). This week we have the Country Westerns - guitarist Joey Plunket, drummer Brian Kotzur and bassist Sabrina Rush - who talked about the winding road that brought them together, the band's progress to the Fat Possum record deal and their debut album, and musician life during COVID-19. We also found out they are baseball fans -- Joey grew up with the Braves, Brian the Astros and Sabrina the Cubs (that collective heartache must drive their music, right?). Find this wonderful album on Amazon and Bandcamp or if possible, your local independent record store. Buy this record, put it on repeat and thank us later if you haven't listened already -- and go see their show when the road clears. In Chapter Two, and early look at Spring Training after the first weekend of games. Also, Eduardo Rodriguez returns after missing the 2020 season with COVID-19 complications and looked strong in his first simulated game., Scott Kazmir returns to MLB as a Giant non-roster invitee, hoping to make a Major League Roster for the first time since 2016. There is also the Spring Training 20-pitch rule, evaluating the major free agent signings and, out of the blue, our take (and Craig's wife's) take on J. J. Watt signing with the Cardinals. In Chapter Three, Taylor Swift re-recorded her smash hit single "Love Story" and the entire second album from which it originates, "Fearless," which releases in Spring. Love Story had predictable immediate  success on the country charts so Swift wins another round, in a big and sobering way, against her longtime nemesis Scooter Braun and former record label, Big Machine. No doubt, to be continued!.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants signing pitchers Shun Yamaguchi and Scott Kazmir to minor league deals with invitations to spring training. Yamaguchi signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays last offseason, and did not have a good 2020 season. Toronto cut him loose this winter, and the Giants picked him up on a minor league deal that will pay him the league minimum if he makes the major league roster. Yamaguchi was a star closer and starter in Japan, and could be used as a starter or reliever with the Giants if he makes the team. Kazmir is 37 years old and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2016, but he's still throwing in the low 90s and has always had a really good changeup. It's a no-risk move for a guy who still has potential. In Kazmir and Yamaguchi, the Giants have added two more pitchers capable of making starts. The Giants now go at least nine deep with intriguing arms to fill out the starting rotation. They're likely going to need that depth to cover 162 games, a year after pitchers' workloads were severely shortened due to the 60-game season. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Nasir and Matt discuss the scandal involving an employee of DraftKings winning a contest for competitor FanDuel and why this has sparked a discussion on gambling and insider trading. Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: Welcome to our podcast where we cover business in the news and add our legal twist to the business news. My name is Nasir Pasha. MATT: And I’m Matt Staub. NASIR: And we have a huge problem because I have a list of articles that we’re covering but no title so I’ve no idea what we’re doing. Who was responsible for putting the title in? Matt, was that you? MATT: Possibly. You know, I almost wrote something up there and then I didn’t. I usually just copy and paste from an article. So, this is big for you because you’re probably oblivious to… NASIR: Oblivious? MATT: Right now, what do you think is going on where you’re located? Are there any sports happening today? NASIR: You know, what’s funny is – if he’s listening, it’s going to be funny – I was in the elevator with somebody today. He’s like, “Hey, are you going to watch the games tonight?” and I’m like, “What games?” Yeah, as a pure accident, I am aware that the Astros and the Texans are playing – not each other. MATT: No, it’d be interesting. NASIR: It would be interesting, and I saw a bunch of people wearing Texas jerseys out and I’m like, “Man, it’s kind of odd.” It’s like, not Sunday, and I realized it was a Thursday night game. MATT: There’s a Thursday night game every week so the Texans are playing. That’s not that big of a deal but the Astros are in the playoffs. They won the other night in this weird one game wildcard. They’re actually playing right now as we record. I guess both of those games will be going on while we record but I’m guessing you probably can’t name one player on the Astros. NASIR: Of course, I can name one player on the Astros. MATT: I hope you Google and say someone who’s retired. NASIR: Yeah. I mean, isn’t Scott Kazmir going to pitch Game 2 tonight? MATT: Well, it’s Game 1 tonight. NASIR: I mean, that’s what I mean. Oh, no, I meant he’s going to actually pitch Game 2. MATT: It’s possible, yeah. It’s only funny because he’s been on the team for probably a couple of months because he got traded in the middle of the season. NASIR: Oh, yeah, of course, I know. Actually, you know, I know we’re covering fantasy sports but, you know, fantasy football, I get, but fantasy baseball, with so many games per year, that’s too much. MATT: That’s why I led into this sports-related question and I don’t know, I would assume they have some sort of baseball… Fantasy sports, we’re talking about specifically DraftKings and FanDuel which fantasy sports used to be you’d have a team, you’d pick your team, you’d basically go with that team throughout the year, adding or dropping players, making trades. These companies – and I think there are some more out there too but these are probably the two biggest ones – DraftKings and FanDuel – for football, it’s huge because basically what you do, from what I understand – I’ve never played – is you have an allotted amount of money of your salary or your payroll and you pick whatever players in the different positions and you have to come in under the payroll and there’s some contest every Sunday because there’s one game every week per team in NFL. You take the total points and they have this big contest and I think it’s either a million dollars or close to a million dollars for the first place every week. NASIR: At least not FanDuel but… MATT: DraftKings. NASIR: Don’t they advertise a million dollars? MATT: Yeah. I mean, I should know since there’s about a billion commercials between the two, if you watch any sports channels. So, here’s what happened. There was an employee who worked for DraftKings. Like I said, these are two different companies. He worked for DraftKings and I guess he’s privy to some information on, you know, who is selecting what players for this big contest and I’ll get to that ...

The Red Sox are playing really well, as they're 14-6 since August 10th. The offense is clicking, with everybody delivering, and the bullpen looks good as well. Theo Epstein deserves credit too, for the Victor Martinez trade, and the worthwhile waiver pick-ups of Alex Gonzalez, Billy Wagner, and Paul Byrd. Clay Buchholz pitched wonderfully on Saturday, and it's possible that he has turned the corner. That is a huge key to the Red Sox. But Alex says that this is all moot until Josh Beckett turns it around. Beckett has allowed 10 home runs in his past 3 starts, and doesn't look good. Alex says that this Red Sox team doesn't get out of the first round of the playoffs without Beckett, and that Beckett's struggles are by far his biggest worry. Also, the back-end of the rotation took another hit, as Tim Wakefield was scratched from his start tomorrow against Tampa Bay. Alex mulls over the AL standings, and states that this series against the Rays is Tampa Bay's final stand in the wild card race. Alex, though he understands the motive of the Scott Kazmir trade, doesn't understand the timing. Alex also doesn't understand why the Red Sox didn't put in a claim on Kazmir. The "post of the day" is handed out, a call is played, and Alex praises the Cardinals' great play, and speculates on the outcome of the Giants and Rockies NL wild card race.
