Louis Henry Mitchell is so much more than the Creative Director of Character Design for Sesame Workshop... he is a living, breathing example of finding your calling and creating your own destiny. Louis didn't step right into his dream job, he made small steps in the direction of his passion until one day he found himself there. How did he get to Sesame Street? The spark that started his creative journey began when he was just six years old, and saw Jim Henson on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was in that moment he realized that a person was behind creating his favorite characters, and if they could do it, why couldn't he? Today, Louis directs and oversees all aspects of character art for Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street. He's designed Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons and floats, directed Sesame Street Muppet photo shoots, and created iconic characters we've come to love. In today's thought-provoking episode of The Atheist Experience, Forrest Valkai and Deconstruction Zone Justin dive into the persistence of bad arguments, the misinterpretation of scientific findings, and the profound impact of beliefs on personal and societal well-being.Rook in NY posits that belief in God isn't inherently bad, suggesting that in a "perfect world," individuals could hold such beliefs privately without negative consequences. Justin and Forrest counter that religious beliefs inevitably influence behavior and policy, citing historical examples of religiously motivated oppression and arguing that even private beliefs can hinder personal growth and societal progress, as beliefs don't stay in a vacuum. Rook ultimately acknowledges his point's shortcomings upon deeper scrutiny. What are the broader implications of beliefs that remain unchallenged?Simone in United Kingdom presents a syllogism, arguing that if thoughts are part of reality and we think God exists, then God exists as part of that reality. The hosts challenge this, asking if imagining a creature means it truly exists, and if this is a genuine reason for belief or a fear of hell. Simone reveals she is still in the early stages of deconstructing her Christian upbringing and has more questions than answers. How does one navigate a deconstruction journey when fundamental beliefs are questioned?Brisbane in AZ questions satanic atheism, claiming an AI overview suggests it promotes self-indulgence and a rejection of altruism. Forest refutes this by reading the Satanic Temple's actual tenets, which include compassion and justice, and critiques Brisbane's reliance on inaccurate AI summaries over primary sources. The discussion highlights the dangers of trusting AI for complex information and the importance of critical thinking in evaluating belief systems. What role should AI play in informing one's understanding of complex philosophical or religious concepts?Robert in GA challenges the hosts on Jesus's fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and asserts that the complexity of life necessitates a creator, claiming the Big Bang violates thermodynamics. Justin explains how Robert's cited prophecies are taken out of context and not messianic, while Forest refutes the scientific claims, pointing to evolution and the accurate understanding of thermodynamics. The hosts urge Robert to engage with actual scientific and biblical scholarship rather than relying on misinformed arguments. How do individuals overcome ingrained misinformation when seeking truth?Hindu in India argues that consciousness, rather than emerging from the brain, is an ultimate reality of the universe, aligning with the Vedic concept of Brahman. Justin and Forest press for empirical evidence, pointing to how brain modifications alter personality, contradicting the idea of consciousness as an external driver. The hosts emphasize that materialism offers an evidence-based framework for consciousness, while idealism often relies on presuppositions. What scientific breakthroughs would truly bridge the gap between materialist and idealist views of consciousness?Robin in FL shares a family claim that a "spark of life" at conception, supposedly visible during horse breeding, proves the existence of a soul. Justin and Forest clarify that this "spark" is a scientific observation of zinc release during fertilization, not a visible soul, often misinterpreted from studies on mice. They question the logical extensions of this argument, such as mice having souls, and the implications for asexual reproduction. How do scientific findings become distorted and adopted into religious or spiritual narratives?Chris in KS raises the question of circular reasoning in Old Testament prophecies applied to Jesus, particularly Isaiah 7. Justin affirms this circularity, explaining that such prophecies often require secondary interpretations not supported by their original context, challenging the criteria for true prophecy. Forest then discusses gender, distinguishing it from sex as a fluid, socially constructed spectrum not bound by a binary, and encourages self-reflection for deeper understanding. How can an individual reconcile deeply held religious beliefs with evolving scientific and social understandings?Thank you so much Richard for being here thank you Forest and thank you crew we'll see you again next week uh same time same place 5:30 uh Eastern time 4:30 Central time bye!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITHave you ever forgotten everything about a show you loved? Remembered exactly who a controversial judge was the moment their name appeared in the news again? Or felt your heart drop when trusted expectations were shattered? The weekend roundup kicks off with reflections on a Labor Day getaway to Tunica before diving into an unexpected Broadchurch binge-watch that revealed how completely we can forget even the most engaging stories. This segues into a deeper, more troubling revelation about Judge James Boasberg, who recently released a woman arrested for making explicit threats against former President Trump - overruling another judge's decision to deny bond. The contradiction between how such threats are handled raises serious questions about consistency in our justice system.Sports fans will appreciate the breakdown of Bill Belichick's disastrous UNC coaching debut, ending in a humiliating 48-14 loss that has many wondering if the 73-year-old NFL legend should consider retirement rather than rebuilding a struggling college program. But perhaps most heart-wrenching is the story of a mother who returned to pick up her daughter from a birthday party, only to discover the host had departed 90 minutes early, leaving her child alone at a roller rink without food or celebration. It's a stark reminder of how quickly trust between parents can be broken. The episode wraps with a touching personal moment - a rare FaceTime call from an adult daughter and plans to create new family traditions at a local water park. Conspiracies or Lies? What we teach our children will affect how they grow up. You may find that the people that love you will try to protect you in ways that are not beneficial for your future. We need to question what we are told from those that love us or those that we were taught to trust, including our doctors, the news media, and the government. We discuss how people should look at whether there are "unfunded liabilities" in their pensions. We talk about the Epstein files that we are now being told don't exist. We also talk about the "Big Budget Bill" as well as how we ended up in many of the wars that the U.S. got involved in. As we always say, you need to Question Everything! We examine how labels like “anti Semitic” or “conspiracy theorist” are used to silence dissent, how military intelligence and propaganda shape public perception, and how Western foreign policy often hides behind noble narratives while serving lobbyist interests. This special series on Women of Impact rips the lid off the high-profile Diddy trial, breaking down in real-time how control, coercion, and emotional abuse unravel—and how victims get trapped, blamed, and silenced. I sit down with my co-host and criminal behavioral analyst, Laura Richards (who literally changed the law on coercive control) and we talk to psychotherapist, Dr. Nadine (who lived through her own real-life “Wolf of Wall Street” romance turned nightmare) and ABC correspondent & criminal defense attorney, Brian Buckmire, to decode the EXACT playbook predators use + what we MUST look out for. In this explosive deep dive, we break down: - What actually makes women—especially young, ambitious, and talented ones—so vulnerable to abusive “charmers” (even the smart, “could never happen to me” types). - Why women don't just “leave”—and why that whole question is dangerously missing the point. - The critical difference between grooming, mentoring, and manipulation—and how to spot when it crosses the line. - The devastating toll of gaslighting, isolation, cognitive dissonance, and shame—and how abusers expertly use these to keep women silent, scared, and stuck. - The defense's playbook: how manipulation continues even in the courtroom, flipping blame on victims and exploiting doubts about “consent.” - Exactly what to look for to protect yourself and the women you love—long before the point of no return. Because, as Laura and Dr. Nadine said: it is NEVER your fault. There is NOTHING you could have said or done to deserve abuse. And the mission of this series? To make damn sure it never happens to another woman, ever again. In this explosive episode, we pull back the curtain on Operation Paperclip—the secret U.S. mission that brought over 1,600 N*zi scientists to America after WWII. These weren't just lab coats with PhDs—they were SS officers and war criminals who helped shape everything from our space program to mind-control experiments like MK-Ultra. But it didn't stop there. A few months ago I made a decision that changed my life and the trajectory of Tangle for good.I was approached by a producer for a new podcast called “Question Everything,” hosted by Brian Reed (who you might know from the hit podcast S-Town). The producer, Zach St. Louis, told me they were doing a series about the state and future of journalism. They wanted to do an episode about Tangle, which I agreed to enthusiastically, and then Zach came down to the Tangle office and interviewed me for a few hours. During our interview, I mentioned to Zach that we've heard from many readers who said Tangle has helped them with their relationships with people in their family or friend groups with whom they share political disagreements. I even hear from married couples, I said, who are on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Zach was intrigued by this and ended up tracking down a few of those Tangle readers, including one couple who ended up being at the heart of the episode. A few months after Question Everything published our show, it was picked up by This American Life on NPR, which nearly doubled our readership and helped me make a few big hires at Tangle. It all happened right around the election, and was an incredibly exciting and overwhelming time. Now that the dust has settled a bit, we've decided to republish the original Question Everything episode on our own podcast feed so you all can listen to it (in the event you haven't). And, when you're done, I highly recommend going to listen to all of the Question Everything series — which is a genuinely fascinating exploration of journalism.Isaac & the Tangle teamBy the way: If you are not yet a podcast member, and you want to upgrade your newsletter subscription plan to include a podcast membership (which gets you ad-free podcasts, Friday editions, The Sunday podcast, bonus content), you can do that here. In this episode, you'll learn: Why mainstream science might not be telling the whole story about reality and consciousness How questioning what we've been taught can shift the way you see your life and your own potential The subtle ways information is controlled—and how to think for yourself in a world full of noise What if everything you thought was solid, unquestionable truth… wasn't?** Not in a paranoid way, not in a lose-your-grip-on-reality kind of way, but in a way that cracks open possibilities you never even considered. Because here's the thing—most of us don't choose our beliefs. We inherit them. From school, from the media, from people we trust who probably also inherited them. But what happens when we stop blindly accepting and start questioning? I had this moment a few years ago when I realized how many of my core beliefs—about the world, about my own potential, about what was possible—weren't even mine. They were just things I absorbed. And once I started really looking, I saw just how much of my reality had been shaped by things I never even chose to believe. So, let me ask you—when's the last time you questioned something you've always assumed was true? When's the last time you considered an idea that felt too out there… but you entertained it anyway, just to see where it led? Today, our guest is Mark Gober. Mark is a former investment banker turned researcher and author, whose work explores the nature of consciousness, reality, and the hidden structures shaping our world. His books and podcast challenge conventional thinking, pushing the boundaries of what we consider fact.
