When the pages of a book become a battleground for human rights, conversations like the one I have with Bill Konigsberg become not just relevant, but vital. Award-winning and openly gay, Bill Konigsberg has been on the frontlines, both as a sports writer for ESPN and now as a YA author facing the harsh reality of book bans. In an era where queer-themed literature is under siege, Bill's voice is a beacon for authenticity and representation, illuminating the importance of storytelling in the lives of queer teens and the broader community.Transitioning from the adrenaline-infused world of sports journalism to the heartfelt realm of YA fiction, Bill's tale is not just a career shift but a testament to courage and the power of living one's truth. He shares the intimate details of his journey, underscoring the impact that embracing his identity has had on his writing and ultimately, on readers who see themselves reflected in his characters, as well the life-threatening impact that books bans in Republican-led states can have on queer kids. It's a poignant reminder of the resilience required to navigate personal and professional landscapes that aren't always welcoming or safe for the LGBTQ+ community. The episode wraps with a focus on the future, not only for Bill but for all writers and readers in the LGBTQ+ space. We touch upon the collective effort of Authors Against Banned Books and the diverse challenges faced by authors across the spectrum of queer identities. Bill's insights and experiences reveal the multifaceted nature of storytelling in times of adversity, and his commitment to enriching young adult literature with queer narratives that inspire, validate, and empower. In this episode, Bill explains how he navigates the tides of change and censorship, and how he remains hopeful and tenacious in crafting stories that affirm queer lives.Recommended:Destination Unknown - Bill KonigsbergThe Music of What Happens - Bill KonigsbergOpenly Straight - Bill Konigsberg-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock

In this special Pride-month episode, we're joined by Shannon Webb from Compass Health as we focus on behavioral health services for LGBTQ+ Youth in rural and suburban communities, where access to these services has been traditionally limited if not entirely absent. Shannon shares her own story which led her from a home with an incarcerated parent to working in social work to advocate for and empower young people across the Puget Sound region.  Presented by C89.5 in partnership with Seattle Children's, Coping 101 is an ongoing series led by students in Nathan Hale High School's Podcast Club that destigmatizes mental health from a teen's perspective, made possible with local support from Valley Cities, Hansmire Builders and Audian and Compass Health - NW Washington's Behavioral Healthcare leader. Every day, queer teens and young adults are challenged by the politicization of gender identity and sexual orientation and the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. And the mental health consequences are alarming. A staggering 45 percent of LGBTQ+ youth 13 through 24 report to have seriously considered suicide, and 14 percent have tried to hurt themselves, according to a 2022 report from The Trevor Project. And what support is necessary for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults to take care of their well-being amid a national political climate that's working against them? MPR News shares a special broadcast from Call to Mind, American Public Media's initiative to foster conversations about mental health. The special “Queer Youth Resilience & Mental Health” is hosted by Kimberly Adams. Schedule Your Confidential Consultation When I was younger, I remember always being different; no interest in sports, a little effeminate, “husky.” I remember being teased for being different, feeling unloved and eating away the pain. Life would be easier if it ended and no one would miss me if I was gone. Back then, the only place I felt safe was at home, eating in front of the TV. School was unsafe. There were bullies I couldn't hide from. Every day, they called me a faggot, a queer, “Gavid Gaybramson.” I FELT UNLOVABLE AND ALONE. Eventually I met someone ”like me.” It wasn't love, but it allowed me to experience some life, to understand and appreciate differences and to learn I was not the only one. I soon started to share my true self in small steps. First, with people at a distance (a friend in New York). Then, a person a little closer (a friend from high school). There was always this lingering fear of rejection, humiliation and finding out I was not really good enough to love.

Rainbow Labs creates a series of after-school programming (both in-person and online), seeking to mentor and support underserved Queer and Gender Non-Conforming (QGNC) youth ages 12-18. The idea of Rainbow Labs, launched in 2020, was to address the unique challenges faced by queer and gender nonconforming youth. The content of the labs are designed by QGNC youth for QGNC youth, led by a team of mentors who are trained in trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and youth development. Rainbows Labs is essentially a safe space to explore identity, life skills and empower QGNC to participate in real-world applications.  The Mission of Rainbow Labs is to embolden Queer and Gender Nonconforming youth to discover, curate and experiment with the elements of a fulfilled life through community building and the lived experiences of mentors. Their Vision is a world in which all Queer and Gender Nonconforming Youth see themselves as co-creators of an equitable, and progressive society. In this episode, you will learn… The importance of youth having queer representation to meet, know and work with; as well as the importance of LGBTQIA+ just being kids, and not always having to be “on” as advocates protesting or picketing. Why we, as newly queer youth and queer adults, want and need to be recognized and accepted as queer in all of our respective communities. Why acceptance from our loved ones and close friends is critical to us. How damaging and harmful it can be when we're told by family members, parents, siblings, that, “it's ok to be queer, but just don't tell anyone, keep it to yourself. The similarities and the differences that BOTH of our generations face in the challenges of coming out and living our authentic selves. Queer youth coming-out to their parents; and queer moms coming-out to their (queer) children. What does QGNC stand for? Queer & Gender Nonconforming.
