This week we welcome special guests who open the episode, the youth from the Keep Awake Retreat held at Massanetta Springs Conference Center. Special Guest:Dr. Sarah Leer, practical theologian and youth workerQuestion of the Week: In many church contexts, youth are not empowered because they are deemed to need experience or maturity to be leaders. But regarding many justice issues, especially queer inclusion and affirmation, youth already have questions and have developed thoughts and ideas on what the church should be doing. But they may not be listened to or even asked, even when it comes to their own identity or experience. How do we change this paradigm and build truly inclusive and affirming communities of faith? When the pages of a book become a battleground for human rights, conversations like the one I have with Bill Konigsberg become not just relevant, but vital. Award-winning and openly gay, Bill Konigsberg has been on the frontlines, both as a sports writer for ESPN and now as a YA author facing the harsh reality of book bans. In an era where queer-themed literature is under siege, Bill's voice is a beacon for authenticity and representation, illuminating the importance of storytelling in the lives of queer teens and the broader community.Transitioning from the adrenaline-infused world of sports journalism to the heartfelt realm of YA fiction, Bill's tale is not just a career shift but a testament to courage and the power of living one's truth. He shares the intimate details of his journey, underscoring the impact that embracing his identity has had on his writing and ultimately, on readers who see themselves reflected in his characters, as well the life-threatening impact that books bans in Republican-led states can have on queer kids. It's a poignant reminder of the resilience required to navigate personal and professional landscapes that aren't always welcoming or safe for the LGBTQ+ community. The episode wraps with a focus on the future, not only for Bill but for all writers and readers in the LGBTQ+ space. We touch upon the collective effort of Authors Against Banned Books and the diverse challenges faced by authors across the spectrum of queer identities. Bill's insights and experiences reveal the multifaceted nature of storytelling in times of adversity, and his commitment to enriching young adult literature with queer narratives that inspire, validate, and empower. In this episode, Bill explains how he navigates the tides of change and censorship, and how he remains hopeful and tenacious in crafting stories that affirm queer lives.Recommended:Destination Unknown - Bill KonigsbergThe Music of What Happens - Bill KonigsbergOpenly Straight - Bill Konigsberg-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock

On this episode, Lucian cites his research on Conversion Therapy and says "42 billion youth are homeless annually and 40% of those identify as LGBTQ+” highlighting a problem where many Americans do not support queer culture, and queer youth find it difficult to receive acceptance in their homes. Lucian and Andrew discuss the difficulties the Democratic party face in having to promote queer friendly laws while also warding off Republican hate speech. Increasingly, Russian citizens opposed to the war are fleeing their country, taking asylum in other places – around the world. A significant number of these folks are queer – leaving not just because of their opposition to the war, but fleeing severe persecution in Russia, as the country cracks down on the LGBTQ community. And, they're landing in places that are skeptical of them because of the war in Ukraine. In this episode I'm talking to Maxim Eye-BAD-off, coordinator with Rusa LGBTQ+ - a network for Russian-speaking LGBTQ+ individuals in the United States, their friends, supporters and loved ones. They provide informational support to asylum seekers and organize social events to increase acceptance and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people within the Russian-speaking public. We talk about the queer climate in Russia today, how it has evolved, the feedback loop of LGBTQ oppression – how the anti-LGBT policies instituted in Russia are being mirrored in red-states here in the US, that then inform further oppressive policies in Russia, the war in Ukraine, how it has created a global diaspora of Ukrainian and Russian refugees, and how you can support the community. **This episode was recorded on July 7, 2023, one week after the Supreme Court issued its ruling in 303 Creative allowing some private businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ people. If you've been listening to the podcast over the past few months, you know that I've been worried about the safety and mental health of the queer community, especially queer kids, as they sustain broadside after broadside from the far-right, the Republican Party, which has firmly set the queer community in its sights. Hundreds of pieces of anti-LGBTQ legislation have passed in Republican-led states – banning books with LGBT content, banning drag, banning trans treatment, and banning LGBTQ discussion in certain places. All of this stigmatizes and marginalizes an already vulnerable community. This, in turn, heightens not just the perception of hostility, but actual hostility and violence against LGBTQ-identified individuals. As you might know from my conversation a couple of weeks ago with Beverly Tillery of the Anti-Violence Project, this rhetoric and legislation has led to an increase in anxiety and fear within the queer community, but also actual, tangible incidents of violence against the community. On today's episode I want to dig further into the toll this is taking on queer people, queer families, and queer youth. So, I'm talking to Dr. Abbie Goldberg – Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clark University, and the Director of Women and Gender Studies. A leading scholar on LGBTQ families and queer youth, Dr. Goldberg has published over 140 articles, 25 books chapters, and 4 books – including, most recently, LGBTQ Family Building – A Guide for Prospective Parents. She's also written for the New York Times, The Atlantic, Boston Globe, and New York Magazine. We talk about some of her research, the challenges that LGBTQ families face irrespective of anti-LGBT legislation, but also the impact that this legislation is having on LGBTQ families and youth, the choices people face to stay or leave increasingly hostile environments, and how we can all, and should all, help LGBTQ families and youth in need. And, then after the interview, an AI assistant comes through in its support for LGBT youth.Recommended:LGBTQ Family Building: A Guide for Prospective Parents - Abbie GoldbergMentioned:Equality FloridaClaude 2-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock

2022 marked the fourth year in a row that hate crimes – offenses against a person or property motivated by bias - had increased in the United States. According to the FBI's annual hate crime report, most of these crimes have targeted Black folks, jewish folks, sexual minorities and latinos. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 42% of queer youth say the community in which they live is not accepting of queer people. And, this might for why 73% of queer youth say they are more honest about themselves online than they are in the real world. And, according to New York City Anti-Violence Project 2017 report of LGBT homicides, anti-LGBT homicides grew each year from 2013 through 2017. And, in fact, the number spiked, almost doubling from 2016 to 2017. In this episode, I'm talking to Beverly Tillery – the Executive Director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project about violence against the queer community, intimate partner violence, the influence that political rhetoric and hate speech has on incidents of violence committed against the queer community and queer people, and how you can help – both in your own communities, but also specifically with the Anti-Violence Project. Then, I'll tell you how white supremacists, organized religion, and the Republican Party converged, and why they want to dismantle American democracy.Mentioned:National Coalition of Anti-Violence ProgramsDrag Story HourNYC Against Hate-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock

Sex and sex education is an exciting, and sometimes controversial topic. LGBTQ sex and sex education is, unfortunately, more controversial, especially in today's political environment. But, for me – it's also more exciting. And, having this conversation, and talking about sex can bring us joy; it can make us happier and more fulfilled people; it can enhance our relationships and our mental health; and it can literally save lives. My guest today – Dr. Joshua Rosenberger – is an expert on this subject. He is an associate professor of Biobehavioral Health at Penn State and the Director of the Survey Research Center. He's also a very prolific researcher and author – focusing on the sexual development and health of gay and bisexual men, HIV /STI prevention, health disparities, and sexual marginalization. We talk about all of these things, as well as the concept of gay age, the FDA's recent reversal of their decades-old ban on men who have sex with men donating blood, Tennessee's decision to deny accepting federal HIV funds, and the potential impact of that, and the idea of redemption in our contemporary politics.Mentioned:Vanderpump RulesWhite Tears, Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Color – Ruby Hamad-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock
No matter where they live, Queer Youth deserve safe spaces, supportive resources and affirming care to advance into adulthood with health, opportunity and equity. In this special Pride-month episode, we're joined by Shannon Webb from Compass Health as we focus on behavioral health services for LGBTQ+ Youth in rural and suburban communities, where access to these services has been traditionally limited if not entirely absent. Welcome to Pride Month! This is the 53rd annual pride in the United States. The first, in 1970, happened in New York City to mark the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots – popularly considered to be a seminal moment in gay rights in the United States, when the queer community – trans folks, gay folks, drag queens, queers of all colors and races – protested the brutal tactics employed by the New York City Police Department to harass and intimidate the queer community. And, it was this protest that sent a shot across the bow of law enforcement, as well as the government generally and society as a whole, that the gay community was no longer going to be a silent victim to abuse and repression. Since then, Pride events in June each year have grown and proliferated in the United States – and also outside of our borders - culminating in a month of visibility and celebration. As I will discuss with my guest today, and also in my closing thoughts, these events take on special significance and meaning this year – as the queer community is under a uniquely direct and targeted campaign of hatred and derision, largely driven by the Republican Party and the far-right Christian community in the United States. Today's guest confronts this environment by providing creative outlets for queer artists, creators, performers, and youth to express themselves and showcase their talent in a safe space, but also on the world stage. Adam Odsess-Rubin is the Founding Artistic Director of National Queer Theater and co-founder of the annual, New York Times acclaimed, Criminal Queerness Festival. We talk about these projects, how and why they've developed, what it's like working in this medium in these challenging times, how National Queer Theater designs programming to provide an outlet for queer people and queer youth, how you can engage, especially as the 2023 Criminal Queerness Festival is just around the corner, corporate pinkwashing, and what the future of the queer community might look like (oh...and Padma Lakshmi). Every day, queer teens and young adults are challenged by the politicization of gender identity and sexual orientation and the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. And the mental health consequences are alarming. A staggering 45 percent of LGBTQ+ youth 13 through 24 report to have seriously considered suicide, and 14 percent have tried to hurt themselves, according to a 2022 report from The Trevor Project. Given that LGBTQ+ youth face continued fights around their identity, what are mental health concerns specific to queer youth? And what support is necessary for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults to take care of their well-being amid a national political climate that's working against them? MPR News shares a special broadcast from Call to Mind, American Public Media's initiative to foster conversations about mental health. The special “Queer Youth Resilience & Mental Health” is hosted by Kimberly Adams. Guests: Brian Coleman is a licensed clinical professional counselor at Jones College Prep High School in Chicago Public School District. This week we put a more positive spin on the topic and try our best to celebrate when artists or bands we typically hate suddenly win us over with one surprising new release. Kk Naimool was born in Trinidad and Tobago and followed a winding path to Beacon. Kk, who uses all pronouns, has worked closely with Newburgh's LGBTQ Center and the Cornwall school district to support gay and trans people. She is also on Beacon's Human Rights Commission and helped found a consulting group called Collective Justice that works with mutual aid pods and other community nonprofits. “Wherever you start is a good place to start,” Kk says in this surprisingly hilarious interview.
Addiction, and more importantly Recovery, in the Queer Community has always been near and dear to my heart. Historically, we see higher substance use disorder and mental health concerns with those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and oftentimes we experience societal traumas without even knowing it. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in Queer Youth and this has to stop. Join me in this fight. This is an epidemic with no vaccine. In this final episode in this series honoring Blaire Ostler [scholar, author, and warrior at the complex intersection of the Mormon and Queer worlds], Val and Nathan walk through 15 suggestions given by Blaire on how we can do a better job educating ourselves and those around us on queer issues so that our queer children and adolescents feel seen, safer, and valued. Please share this entire series with those around you who may not understand the psychological costs exacted upon our own loved ones due to current Queer-phobic theology. Helping others see this issues with new eyes might protect a precious life.************************************Contact Valerie at info@valeriehamaker.com to get on a waitlist for one of her space limited processing/support groups mentioned in this episode.
https://youtu.be/1LQ2pz-3u_A YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Trust me. I know you because I am you. I've been exactly where you are right now and I can help you navigate through this crazy shit storm and come out the other side with the clarity, courage and confidence to own your beautiful life. Schedule Your Confidential Consultation When I was younger, I remember always being different; no interest in sports, a little effeminate, “husky.” I remember being teased for being different, feeling unloved and eating away the pain. Life would be easier if it ended and no one would miss me if I was gone. Back then, the only place I felt safe was at home, eating in front of the TV. School was unsafe. There were bullies I couldn't hide from. Every day, they called me a faggot, a queer, “Gavid Gaybramson.” I FELT UNLOVABLE AND ALONE. Eventually I met someone ”like me.” It wasn't love, but it allowed me to experience some life, to understand and appreciate differences and to learn I was not the only one. I soon started to share my true self in small steps. First, with people at a distance (a friend in New York). Then, a person a little closer (a friend from high school). There was always this lingering fear of rejection, humiliation and finding out I was not really good enough to love.

US Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson withstands her confirmation hearings despite the anti-marriage equality and transphobic “questioning” from Republicans like Senators John Cornyn and Marsha Blackburn. The penchant of some LGBTQ gatekeepers to shun those they judge to be “not queer enough” creates new barriers for young people just coming out or questioning their identities (OutCasting Overtime's Carol speaks out, produced by Marc Sophos). Yer a wizard, podcast listener! This week we are here to discuss the Harry Potter franchise, its various video game adaptations, and our complicated relationship with the franchise as queer & trans individuals whose childhood fondness for this series has turned sour in our mouths like a bad Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Bean in light of JK R*wling's dangerous and repeated transphobic comments over the past few years. Our guest (and DEAR friend of the pod) Leo Grierson unpacks their feelings with us through the lens of the old PC Harry Potter video games, how we can approach those games (and by proxy, the series,) with a queer eye, why turning out backs on the franchise wholesale isn't necessarily the only way to reckon with this series, and what the current cultural climate around the HP franchise could spell for the upcoming video game Hogwarts Legacy, an "immersive, open-world action RPG" set in the Harry Potter universe set to come out later this year (although let's be honest girl we're pretty sure it's getting delayed...) We also ask ourselves if there is any ethical way support the game devs/creators of HP content that *aren't* JKR knowing that she's still making money off of the franchise. We don't have a clean-cut answer, but we certainly ponder it! Leo Grierson (he/they) is the host of That Do It For Ya? From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
I can't think of a more perfect way to start this podcast than with a man I've admired since I first met him. Gregg Cassin is funny, compassionate and filled with an energy that is infectious. I felt pulled to him immediately as have so many of the people he's met along the way. Gregg has spent the past 30 plus years leading retreats and workshops for the HIV, LGBT and Queer Youth communities. He founded the San Francisco Healing Circle and the San Francisco Center for Living as well as assisting with the national AIDS, Medicine and Miracles Conference. Gregg's work honors the scores of friends lost to the virus as well as the loved ones who remain. He works at San Francisco's Shanti Project and is the creator of “Honoring Our Experience” a retreat program addressing the issues of long term survivors of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. He also facilitates retreats for LGBTQ young adults and the LGBTQ asylee and refugee community.Gregg's work with the queer community honors the sacred inner journey we are all called to. Story-telling remains the foundation of his work which explores the importance of self-love, connection, belonging and innocence. In 1990, Gregg was awarded a Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition, presented to him by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as well as honors from the City of San Francisco. He is seen in the ground-breaking documentaries “Absolutely Positive” and “That's a Family.” His greatest joy is the gift of being a parent and grandparent to 3 amazing humans. You can learn more about Gregg's work here: https://www.greggcassin.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/greggcassin/To learn more about Suzanne's journey along the Camino, check out her memoir, Estrellas - Moments of Illumination Along El Camino de Santiago.
