Faith That OvercomesThere is one theological point that when a believer truly grasps it, transforms them from a spectator into a world changer. It is not new. It is not complicated. But it has been buried, forgotten, and in many cases deliberately set aside — and the results are visible everywhere we look. Here is what is remarkable about the believers who actually changed the world: they disagreed on many things. They debated baptism, church governance and structure, worship practice, and end times theology. But on this one point — every single world changer, in every generation, across every tradition — got it right. And when they got it right, everything else clicked. Their preaching had power. Their prayers produced results. Their advance was unstoppable. And every generation that missed it — no matter how sincere, how passionate, or how doctrinally precise in every other area — found that their best efforts produced little lasting impact. You can have the worship right, the theology right, the programs right, and the intentions right — and still watch darkness advance if you have missed this one thing.Reclaiming this theological standpoint in our generation may be the most important thing the Church can do right now.Jesus promised that the gates of hell shall not prevail against His Church. But gates are defensive structures. They don't move. They don't pursue. They hold ground. Which means Jesus was not promising that the Church would survive the devil's attacks — He was declaring that the devil cannot survive the Church's advance. The imagery is not a Church under siege. It is a Church storming the gates of an enemy stronghold. So if hell's gates are prevailing in your area and in your generation — if the enemy is successfully defending his territory from you — the promise didn't fail. The Church simply wasn't advancing. In this message Robbie Patterson shares the account of Columba — who sailed to the pagan shores of Scotland, walked into a land steeped in demon worship and druidic darkness, and advanced until an entire nation came to faith in Jesus Christ. He had this one thing right. And it made everything else work.Somewhere along the way the Church stopped advancing and started retreating. Principalities that Spirit-filled believers once toppled in the authority of Jesus Christ are now reoccupying the very institutions and regions that the blood of faithful men and women purchased for the Kingdom of God.This message confronts the passive, defensive, survival-minded Christianity that has no historical precedent among the believers who actually changed the world — and calls the Church back to what it was always commissioned to be: an advancing Kingdom force that the gates of hell cannot withstand.Gates don't chase you. The question is whether you are moving.Your theology will determine your trajectory.Every generation leaves a verdict behind — and yours is still being written. It's time to advance.#ChristIsKingLiveLikeIt #FaithThatOvercomes

A celestial grandfather strolls low across the south on winter evenings. He’s represented by two stars. In the western world, they’re part of the constellation Columba, the dove. But in ancient China they were known as the Grandfather. The stars are Alpha and Epsilon Columbae. Coincidentally, they’re about the same distance from Earth – about 280 light-years. And both are much bigger and brighter than the Sun. But there’s a big difference in their ages, so the stars aren’t related. Alpha – the First Star of Grandfather – is the brighter of the two – the brightest member of Columba. It’s less than a hundred million years old – about two percent the age of the Sun. But it won’t be around much longer. It’s about four and a half times the mass of the Sun. Heavier stars age more quickly. In the next 150 million years or so, Alpha will move out of the “prime” phase of life and into the next phase, as a giant. Epsilon has already reached that phase. It’s not as massive as Alpha, but it’s about one and a half billion years older – a third the age of the Sun. It’s puffed up to many times the size of the Sun, so it shines much brighter. Before long, though, it will cast off its outer layers, leaving only its hot, dead core – and Grandfather will be down to a single star. Columba is low in the south-southeast at nightfall. Alpha and Epsilon are close together, near the center of the constellation. Script by Damond Benningfield

In this episode, I talk about the mystic poets who didn't just shape my theology—they taught me how to pray. Not the greatest-hits version of Catholic mysticism, but the voices that formed my interior life through poetry, longing, and encounter. We explore why poetry has always been the native language of mysticism, how prayer is shaped more by desire than by technique, and why some of the most transformative saints are remembered for their theology while their poetry is quietly forgotten. Along the way, I reflect on John of the Cross, Jacopone da Todi, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and St. Columba—mystics who wrote about God not as an idea, but as fire, wound, pursuit, exile, and love. This isn't a how-to on prayer or a list of spiritual habits, rather it's an invitation into a deeper, more contemplative Catholic spirituality, where longing becomes language and love becomes the teacher. Patt explains that CAM was founded by Derek Fordjour, an internationally-renowned visual artist from Memphis, who attended Central High School and wanted to give back to his community. What began as a four-week summer experience for 25 high school students has now grown into an ongoing, year-round program with several with several components, including a Summer Fellowship Program, Teen Art Lab, and Artist Mentoring Programs.Summer Fellowship for High School Artists - CAM offers a four-week summer fellowship for rising juniors and seniors, focusing on portfolio development for high school artists. The organization provides a dedicated space at 652 Marshall Avenue in the Edge Medical District, where students can create portfolios equivalent to ACT scores for college scholarships. The facility offers a wide range of art classes and workshops, including oil painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics, with additional opportunities for students through the Teen Art Lab and Open Studio sessions on weekends and weekdays.Art Program Success Stories - Patt shares some success stories of young artists participating in their program. He highlights how the program helps overcome societal fears about pursuing art as a career and provides mentorship and guidance. Derek shares specific examples, including a student who changed his career path from mechanics to painting and sold several large paintings at their inaugural art sale. They also mentioned that their college readiness program has helped students secure over $500,000 in scholarships.Art as Therapy for Youth - Patt emphasizes the power of art to build community and importance of art as a form of expression and therapy for young people, highlighting its role in providing a supportive environment for those who might not have one elsewhere. He notes that while not all students will pursue careers in art, there are numerous related jobs and the creative process itself can be therapeutic. Patt also stresses the need for parents and teachers to understand and support artistic expression.Flagship Summer Art Fellowship Program - Patt describes their flagship Summer Fellowship program, which selects 25 young artists through a competitive 4-round process including portfolio review and interviews with parents. The program includes a 3-week immersive experience at St. Columba, where participants focus on artwork without cell phone distractions, followed by visits to Memphis art locations and a trip to New York where they see exhibitions and learn about the art business from Derek Fordjour.Community Art Programs and Initiatives - Patt explains how CAM offers art programs including printmaking, sculpture, and art history, and provides 6 college credit hours at no cost to young people. He emphasizes the importance of community support, inviting people to visit the facility, talk to participants, and consider donations. Derek also highlights CAM's initiatives, such as trips to New York and college application assistance, and mentioned their annual "Deck the Walls" event where participants' artwork is showcased for purchase.Transforming Lives Through Arts - Patt discusses the positive impact of Contemporary Arts Memphis on the community, highlighting how the program transforms lives, provides scholarship opportunities, and fosters a vibrant city. He shares feedback from teachers, parents, and donors, emphasizing how the program changes classroom culture, shifts parental mindsets about art's importance, and enables young people to pursue higher education, including prestigious institutions like Yale. He also mentions removing barriers such as transportation by providing Ubers. This week is our big Halloween episode to finish off monster month! I hope your October has been amazing and you have fun plans for Halloween. William suggested we learn about the Loch Ness Monster, so let's go! We talked about the Loch Ness Monster, AKA Nessie, a really long time ago, back in episode 29. Those old episodes aren't even available in the feed anymore—you have to go to the website to find them, and the audio isn't very good. So here's a revised and updated Nessie episode! There are some spooky stories associated with this one, but not too scary. Let's call it one and a half out of five monsters on the spooky scale. First, a little background about what Loch Ness is. It's the biggest of a chain of long, narrow, steep-sided lakes and shallow rivers that cut the Scottish Highlands right in two along a fault line. Loch Ness is 22 miles long, or 35 km, with a maximum depth of 754 feet, or 230 meters, the biggest lake in all of the UK, not just Scotland. During the Pleistocene, or ice age, Scotland was repeatedly covered with glaciers and ice sheets that were almost a kilometer thick. The ice only completely melted about 8,000 years ago. The massive weight of the glaciers over the fault line, where the rocks are already weaker, started the process of carving out the lake, and when the ice started melting in earnest around 10,000 years ago, the massive amounts of meltwater washed the weakened rocks out and left the deep valley that is now Loch Ness. The land slowly rose from where the ice had pressed it down, so that Loch Ness is now about 50 feet above sea level, or 15 meters. In other words, Loch Ness is only about 10,000 years old. All the lochs and their rivers have made up a busy shipping channel since the Caledonian Canal made them more navigable with a series of locks and canals in 1822, but the area around Loch Ness was well populated and busy for centuries before that. It's a beautiful area, so Loch Ness has also long been a popular tourist destination, well before the Nessie sightings started. There have been stories of strange creatures in Loch Ness and all the lochs, but nothing that resembles the popular idea of Nessie. The stories were mostly of water monsters of Scottish folklore, like the kelpie we talked about in episode 351, or of out-of-place known animals like a bottle-nosed dolphin that was captured at sea and released in the loch as a prank in 1868. The oldest monster report in the area actually comes from the 7th century, but it's supposed to have happened in the River Ness, which drains from the lake. When local people told St. Columba about a monster that had grabbed a man swimming in the River Ness, and presumably ate him, the saint went there to take care of the monster. He told one of his followers to swim across the river, which sounds pretty rough, but the saint said, “Don't worry, fam, I gotchu,” but in old-timey language. The man started swimming and sure enough, a water beast approached. The saint made the sign of the Christian cross and said, “Stop right there, don't touch him. Get back, monster!” The monster swam away immediately and was never seen again. The next sighting important enough for people to write down happened more than 1,400 years later,

Ilia Delio welcomes back Rev. Dr. Hillary Raining to probe a live question for faith communities today: when our concepts of God become narrow—or distorted—how do they derail spiritual growth and even undermine justice? Hillary names the fears that keep churches clinging to old power structures, and offers a pastoral imagination big enough for an evolving, more-than-abstract God. From “theology police” moments in grief care to the responsibility we bear as Christ's body, she invites a shift from transactional religion to a life transfigured by love. The conversation moves into language itself. Do words like Christ and God still help? Hillary shares why she often leads with “Spirit” in wider settings, why the church still needs a reclaimed Christ-language, and how wisdom and creation-energy weave through our lives. Drawing on her Indigenous heritage, she describes practices of reciprocity with the land and how those experiences shape a joyful, resilient path forward for St. Columba's: centers of prayer and discernment where head and heart meet, contemplation births action, and hope endures.ABOUT REV. “You are loved, warts and all.” Bishop Emeritus Patrick J. McGrath of San Jose said it at every confirmation—and liturgist Diana Macalintal never tired of hearing it. In this episode of “Preach,” she recalls a bishop's confirmation homily that “quickly devolved into an exploration of sin and evil,” complete with exorcisms and damnation. Like composing music, this preacher “did not emphasize the right notes—the right message,” she says. “Confirmation is all about strengthening the goodness that is in there, giving us the grace to do the hard things, to do the beautiful things in the world.” But don't avoid reality either. “For those who are being confirmed, these are oftentimes teenagers where real life is life and death. Whether it is or not, it is drama all the time.” Name those struggles, she urges, “in the context of this gift of the Spirit and how they can do their part in the mission of Christ.” Diana also challenges a common assumption: there's no obligation to choose a saint's name at confirmation. Church teaching honors our given names as "icons of a person." At St. Columba in Oakland, Calif., her historically Black parish, "for so many, their ancestors' names were taken away" during enslavement. "Honor the names that are given," she says, "because somebody loved that child enough to give them that gift." ___ Support Preach—subscribe at americamagazine.org Learn more about your ad choices. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with poet Patrick Grace about his stunning poetry collection, Deviant (U Alberta Press, 2024). Deviant traces a trajectory of queer self-discovery from childhood to adulthood, examining love, fear, grief, and the violence that men are capable of in intimate same-sex relationships. Richly engaged with the tangible and experiential, Patrick Grace's confessional poetry captures profound, sharp emotions, tracking a journey impacted equally by beauty and by brutality. Coming-of-age identity struggles are recalled with wry wit, and dreamlike poems embrace adolescent queer love and connections as a way to cope with the fear and cruelty that can occur in gay relationships. Later poems in the collection recall vivid moments of psychological trauma and stalking and explore the bias of the justice system toward gay men. Collecting memories, dreams, and fears about sexual identity, Deviant makes important contributions to queer coming-of-age and intimate partner violence narratives. Patrick Grace is an author and teacher who divides his time between Vancouver and Victoria, BC. His poems have been published widely in Canadian literary magazines, including Arc Poetry Magazine, Best Canadian Poetry, Columba, EVENT, The Ex-Puritan, The Fiddlehead, The Malahat Review, Prairie Fire, and more. His work has been a finalist for literary contests with CV2 and PRISM international, and in 2020, his poem "A Violence" won The Malahat Review's Open Season Award for poetry. He has published two chapbooks: a blurred wind swirls back for you (2023), and Dastardly (2021), both of which explore aspects of love, fear, and trauma that represent a personal queer identity. Deviant, his first full-length poetry collection, continues to explore these themes. Follow him on IG: @thepoetpatrick. Learn more about your ad choices. Hunger for Wholeness
When Politics Show Up in Pastoral Care with Rev. Dr. Hillary Raining

In this episode of Hunger for Wholeness, Ilia Delio talks with Episcopal priest and spiritual director Rev. Dr. Hillary Raining about what happens when public life shows up in the parish—how pastors can hold political tension without letting church life collapse into partisanship, and why hope and joy remain non-negotiable in a polarized age. Together they explore a renewed mystical imagination for Christianity: experience that leads to transformation, and transformation that bears fruit in justice.Hillary reflects on leading a large Washington, D.C. congregation where worship must flow into weekday service while also tending the inner life. Along the way, the conversation names the fatigue and anxiety many younger adults carry (economy, climate, AI) and re-centers practices that steady courage: prayer, community, and a lively sense of God's presence. Later, Ilia and Hillary speak candidly about serving as women in systems marked by patriarchy, and what an integrated, humane faith might look like now.ABOUT REV. DR. Her book, the Sacred Art of Chant, was a game changer for me when I discovered it in 2019 for the way it named how singing with repetition changed my body. It was a huge honor to be in conversation with her, and then play with harmonies as we sang together (no, I didn't get ALL of them "right"!
