It's Tuesday, June 9th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Timothy Reed Vietnamese Communists have imprisoned 57 Christians Religious freedom is tenuous in Vietnam. That's the subject of a new report by International Christian Concern. At last count, Vietnam has 57 unreleased religious prisoners, five of whom were subjected to government-initiated torture. Pastors and evangelists are imprisoned for what is called “undermining national unity policy” or “abusing democratic freedoms”, whatever that is. And Christmas is a dangerous time for Vietnamese Christians. That's when arrests accelerate in the Central Highlands, especially for believers who are caught worshiping in churches unsponsored by the communist government. State Dept. weighs in on the murder of a Brit by a Sikh Tensions between the United States and the United Kingdom have increased over the killing of a Brit named Henry Nowak. Last December, he was killed by a Sikh, a son of an Indian immigrant. The murderer had falsely accused Nowak of a hate crime. Sadly, the police chose to believe the murderer instead of the victim in the crime. In response, the U.S. State Department issued a statement pointing out “ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing” as “glaring symptoms of civilizational decline” in the United Kingdom. Vice President J.D. Vance also stated on social media that “Henry Nowak died the same way a civilization dies: abandoned, handcuffed by authorities who neither trusted nor cared for him, and accused of hate crimes he did not commit.” Countries where the most Evangelicals live The most Evangelicals in the world live in -- you may have never guessed it -- China. The Joshua Project puts China at the top with 106 million Evangelicals. The United States comes in second with 92 million Evangelicals. Then, comes Nigeria with 64 million, and Brazil with 53 million. The other nations with the largest Evangelical populations include Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, and Uganda. Among the unreached nations of the world with the lowest Christian populations are these European countries: Austria, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Norway, and Sweden. Brazil's surge of Evangelicals and loss of Catholics Brazil has seen a surge of Evangelicals — now at 27%, up from 21.6% in 2010. Brazil's atheist population grew from 8% to 9.3%. The nation's Roman Catholic population took the hit, losing about 8% since 2010. Catholics now represent only 56.7% of Brazilians. Catholicism made up 99% of the population back in 1890, according to the recently released Census of Traditional Peoples and Communities. New poll: America is viewed negatively America is viewed as increasingly unpopular worldwide while China is receiving higher marks for popular approval. Gallup's recent international poll found America at a 31% level vs. China's 36%. That's the highest gap in history. America's net approval ratings have always dropped to the lowest levels in the history of the survey -- now at negative 15%. Trump's endorsed candidate for Iowa governor loses 8/10 of a point Iowa conservative Zach Lahn won the nomination for governor in a crowded Iowa GOP primary last week. Lahn won his primary with just 38% of the vote — a close victory over Trump-endorsed Congressman Randy Feenstra, who earned 37.2% of the vote. Listen to the opening of Lahn's victory speech. LAHN: “I don't have to tell you this, but nobody thought this could be done. We were outspent, opposed by the establishment, told to wait our turn. Well, tonight the people of Iowa had something to say about that. We're not going to wait anymore!” (cheers) Lahn is a sixth generation Iowan who has spoken out against chemical manufacturers and Chinese land ownership here in the United States. Texas Rangers doesn't endorse homosexual pride month The LGBTQ and so-called “Pride Month” fervor has slowed greatly under the Trump administration, but not completely. Sports teams across the nation continue to celebrate Homosexual Pride Month. To their credit, the Texas Rangers are the only team in Major League Baseball to abstain from celebrating perverted lifestyles. Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen opposes homosexual pride But some are still standing against homosexuality on a personal level. Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen was the only player on his team who did not appear on the field in a homosexual “Pride” hat last Friday, standing by his convictions. The Los Angeles Dodgers organization has been known to openly support homosexuality, transgenderism, and drag. Influencer Jon Root praises Treinen's actions. He wrote, “While other professed Christians, Dodgers [shortstop] Mookie Betts and manager Dave Roberts wore [homosexual transgender] “pride” hats, only Blake Treinen, [the pitcher], refused. Don't bow down to the idols of our age, Christians. Stand firm like Treinen.” Ephesians 6:13 says, “Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Send a two-sentence thank you note to Blake Treinen for standing against the homosexual agenda. The address is Los Angeles Dodgers, 1000 Vin Scully Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Trump's $1.7 billion “anti-weaponization” fund shot down President Donald Trump's controversial $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund has been shot down by the courts and those within his own party. Several Republican senators objected to the newly created fund, which would have had taxpayers foot the bill and paid out victims of political persecution while also shielding the Trump family from federal tax review. June 9th anniversary of Scottish missionary Columba And finally, on this date, June 9th, A.D. 597, the great Irish Christian missionary, Columba, went to be with the Lord. Columba, also known as Columcille, planted churches all over Scotland and established the famed missionary school on the isle of Iona in A.D. 563, a training ground for missionaries over the next several centuries. Born around the year A.D. 521, Columba was in line to become a High King of Ireland, but chose to serve the Lord in foreign lands instead. Isaiah 52:7 states, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, June 9th, in the year of our Lord 2026. Show Notes Lemuel: I am Lemuel Gonzalez, repentant sinner, and along with Amity Armstrong, your heavenly host, I invite you to find a place in the pew for today's painless Sunday School lesson. Without Works. **Amity: ** Saint Columba Catholic Church was founded in 1898, the result of a collaboration between Sacred Heart Church, Oakland and Saint Joseph the Worker Church in Berkeley. The founding pastor was Father Martin Whyte, formerly Assistant Pastor of Sacred Heart. The original population of St. Columba Catholic Church was about 100 mostly Irish families. Following the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 the parish became 35% Italian, while the Irish population decreased to 20%. In the two decades after that earthquake, the number of African American parishioners grew. On September 1, 1981, Father Paul Ross Vassar was assigned as pastor. His 13-year tenure was highlighted with a vision for liturgy that reflected the African American Catholic experience. Fr. Vassar initiated the St. Columba Annual African American Celebration, in conjunction with African American History Month (February), drawing nationally renowned African American speakers. Part of that celebration was – and continues to be—the Rawn Harbor Workshop Choir Experience; noted Catholic Liturgist Rawn Harbor would present a week-long workshop for choirs and singers from throughout the diocese. The church is well-known for its social justice advocacy, including "Black Lives Matter" signage and support for the LGBTQ community. Each year, since 2004, white crosses have been erected on site to commemorate homicide victims. There is a commemorative community service at St. Columba each December, in which family members and friends meet and remember those lost to gun violence.. Lemuel: Tuesday morning, May FIfth, Adian McAleenan, a pastor at Saint Columba, noticed the desecration before morning mass. Sixteen of the memorial crosses had been ripped up and broken, a memorial fountain for the victims of the balcony collapse that killed six Irish students, was knocked over, and an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe torn from place. No motive for the vandalism has surfaced, no manifestos were left behind. Church volunteer Pam Sanchez Hernandez said of the vandals, "However deeply troubled they are, they need help. That's probably their way of saying I need help, by being destructive like this." Amity: This demonstrates the nature of Saint Columba; the attitude is service to the congregation and to community at large. We hear conservative voices complaining about the persecution of the Christian faith, and the erosion of Christian values, but when those values are expressed through compassion, mercy, and social justice, they are open to attack. Rather than asking for persecution, or even as some MAGA leaders have, the prosecution and or execution of the vandals responsible, they want to help restore that person or persons balance. In Micah, Chapter 6: verse 8, the prophet describes the will of God towards his people: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Find us on Twitter: @WithoutWorksPod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/withoutworks Email @ withoutworkspod@gmail.com Our Internet home: www.withoutworkspodcast.com Amity: We are also reachable at withoutworkspod@gmail.com, on twitter @withoutworkspod and on Facebook at Without Works podcast. https://www.ktvu.com/news/columba-church-oakland-vandalized https://oaklandside.org/2026/05/07/st-columba-catholic-church-vandalism-oakland/ https://www.ktvu.com/news/columba-church-oakland-vandalized**

A very special evening of music, heritage and community spirit is taking place in Spanish Point this Sunday with the sold-out Supper and Song Fundraiser in aid of Christ Church, Spanish Point. The event will see guests enjoy a meal at the Armada Hotel before an intimate performance from acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Luka Bloom inside the historic church, described as a “Gothic Mediterranean jewel” dating back to 1827. The fundraiser is also part of a wider effort to preserve and reopen historic Church of Ireland spaces across Clare, including projects at St. Columba's Church and Kilfenora Cathedral, with hopes of creating more opportunities for concerts, culture and community events in the future. A celestial grandfather strolls low across the south on winter evenings. He’s represented by two stars. In the western world, they’re part of the constellation Columba, the dove. But in ancient China they were known as the Grandfather. The stars are Alpha and Epsilon Columbae. Coincidentally, they’re about the same distance from Earth – about 280 light-years. And both are much bigger and brighter than the Sun. But there’s a big difference in their ages, so the stars aren’t related. Alpha – the First Star of Grandfather – is the brighter of the two – the brightest member of Columba. It’s less than a hundred million years old – about two percent the age of the Sun. But it won’t be around much longer. It’s about four and a half times the mass of the Sun. Heavier stars age more quickly. In the next 150 million years or so, Alpha will move out of the “prime” phase of life and into the next phase, as a giant. Epsilon has already reached that phase. It’s not as massive as Alpha, but it’s about one and a half billion years older – a third the age of the Sun. It’s puffed up to many times the size of the Sun, so it shines much brighter. Before long, though, it will cast off its outer layers, leaving only its hot, dead core – and Grandfather will be down to a single star. Columba is low in the south-southeast at nightfall. Alpha and Epsilon are close together, near the center of the constellation. Script by Damond Benningfield

In this episode, I talk about the mystic poets who didn't just shape my theology—they taught me how to pray. Not the greatest-hits version of Catholic mysticism, but the voices that formed my interior life through poetry, longing, and encounter. We explore why poetry has always been the native language of mysticism, how prayer is shaped more by desire than by technique, and why some of the most transformative saints are remembered for their theology while their poetry is quietly forgotten. Along the way, I reflect on John of the Cross, Jacopone da Todi, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and St. Columba—mystics who wrote about God not as an idea, but as fire, wound, pursuit, exile, and love. This isn't a how-to on prayer or a list of spiritual habits, rather it's an invitation into a deeper, more contemplative Catholic spirituality, where longing becomes language and love becomes the teacher. This week is our big Halloween episode to finish off monster month! I hope your October has been amazing and you have fun plans for Halloween. William suggested we learn about the Loch Ness Monster, so let's go! We talked about the Loch Ness Monster, AKA Nessie, a really long time ago, back in episode 29. Those old episodes aren't even available in the feed anymore—you have to go to the website to find them, and the audio isn't very good. So here's a revised and updated Nessie episode! There are some spooky stories associated with this one, but not too scary. Let's call it one and a half out of five monsters on the spooky scale. First, a little background about what Loch Ness is. It's the biggest of a chain of long, narrow, steep-sided lakes and shallow rivers that cut the Scottish Highlands right in two along a fault line. Loch Ness is 22 miles long, or 35 km, with a maximum depth of 754 feet, or 230 meters, the biggest lake in all of the UK, not just Scotland. During the Pleistocene, or ice age, Scotland was repeatedly covered with glaciers and ice sheets that were almost a kilometer thick. The ice only completely melted about 8,000 years ago. The massive weight of the glaciers over the fault line, where the rocks are already weaker, started the process of carving out the lake, and when the ice started melting in earnest around 10,000 years ago, the massive amounts of meltwater washed the weakened rocks out and left the deep valley that is now Loch Ness. The land slowly rose from where the ice had pressed it down, so that Loch Ness is now about 50 feet above sea level, or 15 meters. In other words, Loch Ness is only about 10,000 years old. All the lochs and their rivers have made up a busy shipping channel since the Caledonian Canal made them more navigable with a series of locks and canals in 1822, but the area around Loch Ness was well populated and busy for centuries before that. It's a beautiful area, so Loch Ness has also long been a popular tourist destination, well before the Nessie sightings started. There have been stories of strange creatures in Loch Ness and all the lochs, but nothing that resembles the popular idea of Nessie. The stories were mostly of water monsters of Scottish folklore, like the kelpie we talked about in episode 351, or of out-of-place known animals like a bottle-nosed dolphin that was captured at sea and released in the loch as a prank in 1868. The oldest monster report in the area actually comes from the 7th century, but it's supposed to have happened in the River Ness, which drains from the lake. When local people told St. Columba about a monster that had grabbed a man swimming in the River Ness, and presumably ate him, the saint went there to take care of the monster. He told one of his followers to swim across the river, which sounds pretty rough, but the saint said, “Don't worry, fam, I gotchu,” but in old-timey language. The man started swimming and sure enough, a water beast approached. The saint made the sign of the Christian cross and said, “Stop right there, don't touch him. Get back, monster!” The monster swam away immediately and was never seen again. The next sighting important enough for people to write down happened more than 1,400 years later,
Ilia Delio welcomes back Rev. Dr. Hillary Raining to probe a live question for faith communities today: when our concepts of God become narrow—or distorted—how do they derail spiritual growth and even undermine justice? Hillary names the fears that keep churches clinging to old power structures, and offers a pastoral imagination big enough for an evolving, more-than-abstract God. From “theology police” moments in grief care to the responsibility we bear as Christ's body, she invites a shift from transactional religion to a life transfigured by love. The conversation moves into language itself. Do words like Christ and God still help? Hillary shares why she often leads with “Spirit” in wider settings, why the church still needs a reclaimed Christ-language, and how wisdom and creation-energy weave through our lives. Drawing on her Indigenous heritage, she describes practices of reciprocity with the land and how those experiences shape a joyful, resilient path forward for St. Columba's: centers of prayer and discernment where head and heart meet, contemplation births action, and hope endures.ABOUT REV. “You are loved, warts and all.” Bishop Emeritus Patrick J. McGrath of San Jose said it at every confirmation—and liturgist Diana Macalintal never tired of hearing it. In this episode of “Preach,” she recalls a bishop's confirmation homily that “quickly devolved into an exploration of sin and evil,” complete with exorcisms and damnation. Like composing music, this preacher “did not emphasize the right notes—the right message,” she says. “Confirmation is all about strengthening the goodness that is in there, giving us the grace to do the hard things, to do the beautiful things in the world.” But don't avoid reality either. “For those who are being confirmed, these are oftentimes teenagers where real life is life and death. Whether it is or not, it is drama all the time.” Name those struggles, she urges, “in the context of this gift of the Spirit and how they can do their part in the mission of Christ.” Diana also challenges a common assumption: there's no obligation to choose a saint's name at confirmation. Church teaching honors our given names as "icons of a person." At St. Columba in Oakland, Calif., her historically Black parish, "for so many, their ancestors' names were taken away" during enslavement. "Honor the names that are given," she says, "because somebody loved that child enough to give them that gift." ___ Support Preach—subscribe at americamagazine.org Learn more about your ad choices. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with poet Patrick Grace about his stunning poetry collection, Deviant (U Alberta Press, 2024). Deviant traces a trajectory of queer self-discovery from childhood to adulthood, examining love, fear, grief, and the violence that men are capable of in intimate same-sex relationships. Richly engaged with the tangible and experiential, Patrick Grace's confessional poetry captures profound, sharp emotions, tracking a journey impacted equally by beauty and by brutality. Coming-of-age identity struggles are recalled with wry wit, and dreamlike poems embrace adolescent queer love and connections as a way to cope with the fear and cruelty that can occur in gay relationships. Later poems in the collection recall vivid moments of psychological trauma and stalking and explore the bias of the justice system toward gay men. Collecting memories, dreams, and fears about sexual identity, Deviant makes important contributions to queer coming-of-age and intimate partner violence narratives. Patrick Grace is an author and teacher who divides his time between Vancouver and Victoria, BC. His poems have been published widely in Canadian literary magazines, including Arc Poetry Magazine, Best Canadian Poetry, Columba, EVENT, The Ex-Puritan, The Fiddlehead, The Malahat Review, Prairie Fire, and more. His work has been a finalist for literary contests with CV2 and PRISM international, and in 2020, his poem "A Violence" won The Malahat Review's Open Season Award for poetry. He has published two chapbooks: a blurred wind swirls back for you (2023), and Dastardly (2021), both of which explore aspects of love, fear, and trauma that represent a personal queer identity. Deviant, his first full-length poetry collection, continues to explore these themes. Follow him on IG: @thepoetpatrick. Learn more about your ad choices.
