Make sure to download our free guide, 7 Questions Every Passive Investor Should Ask, here. Key Takeaways Start tax planning early—waiting until tax season puts you in reactive mode Don't structure appreciating assets in a C corp—it can lead to unnecessary tax penalties Asset protection is more than just forming an LLC; structure and exposure matter A tax strategist is proactive—meeting regularly and guiding decisions throughout the year The IRS rewards those who build and invest—use the code to your advantage Topics 1. From Debt to Wealth Building Catrina lost 80% of her income when a major client left and found herself $100K in debt This challenge drove her to learn real estate investing and the tax strategies behind wealth building Paid off her debt in 2 years while building a rental portfolio 2. The CPA vs. Tax Strategist CPAs focus on compliance and reporting what already happened Tax strategists plan proactively to reduce your tax bill before decisions are made Working with a strategist who knows your industry—especially real estate—is critical 3. Avoiding Common Structure Mistakes Many investors set up LLCs without understanding tax treatment options Holding real estate in a C corp is a costly and often irreversible mistake Asset protection includes entity structure, insurance, and understanding exposure risk 4. Planning Beats Panic Most deductions and deferrals (like cost segregation and 1031s) require advance planning Catrina meets monthly or quarterly with clients to stay ahead of key decisions Tax planning should start at the beginning of the year—not at filing time 5. Questions to Vet a Tax Professional Ask about their industry experience and how often they meet with clients Determine whether they offer strategy or just compliance services Ensure they understand your specific investing model (e.g. syndication vs. flipping)

Hello Hillside Family! Here are seven things to do to ready yourself for tomorrow's worship service at 10:00 AM on the hill: (1) Pray now that God's Spirit would move powerfully in our singing, connecting as friends, and listening to his Word; (2) Read tomorrow's passage, Genesis 18:1-16, in your “work Bible” and underline or star any word, phrase or passage that rings a bell in your mind; (3) Put your “work Bible” by the front door so you'll remember to bring it with you tomorrow (and remind your kids to bring theirs); (4) Resolve that tomorrow you'll be on the lookout for new people to say “hi” to; and (5) Pray for God's blessing on each member of your group (whether small, home, Oasis/Kairos/The Well) and aim to fist bump each one tomorrow; (6) Prepare now to give in the offering time as the Lord leads you; and (7) Plan to attend tomorrow's annual meeting immediately after the service and participate with Abraham-like faith. In terms of preparation, that should get you started. Can't wait to see you, and your whole staff feels the same!Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from Genesis 18:9-16.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZUbB95ZI81S3JBsB48cO4DJffU56YEQAiJ7If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, October 26, 2025.

Hello My Fellow Hillsiders! Sunday's rolling around again and the whole staff invites you to join your church family for the 10:00 AM worship service. We are pressing on in our “School of Faith” series on the life of Abraham with an episode in that faith champion's life that I (Dan) particularly like. Here's a thought. If you have a “work Bible” that you mark up and annotate in your daily devotions, I invite you to bring it to church with you. As I unpack the passage, I encourage you to underline or star any part of the passage that gets your intention. Penciling notes and cross references in the margins of your Bible is a great way to grow in your understanding of Scripture. One more thing: Be on the lookout for new people to welcome. They are coming every week!Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from Genesis 18:1-9.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZCd3n5Z3OC75ylRaEyAiE8jyyY8DzvOgtoXIf you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe sermon from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, October 19, 2025.

Hillside Service - 2025 - 10 - 05
In Austin, Texas, in 1991, the city was on the verge of becoming the place we know today, a tech hub, a cultural destination. But back then, it was still a big town that felt small, a place that believed itself safe from the kind of darkness that haunted bigger cities. At the Hillside strip mall on West Anderson Lane, there was a little shop called "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" It was a symbol of that every day American life… a place for after-school treats, first dates, and a first job. A place of simple, ordinary innocence. Buton the cold night of December 6, 1991, this symbol of innocence became the scene of an unspeakable crime. An act of such brutal violence that it would steal four young lives and leave a wound on the soul of the city that would fester for nearly 34 years. Amy, Eliza, Jennifer, and Sarah would become permanently etched into the city's memory. Their story became a decades-long quest, not just for a killer, but for the truth. It was a quest marred by false starts, thousands of dead-end leads, wrongful convictions that sent innocent men to prison, and ultimately, a scientific breakthrough that no one, not the investigators, not the families, not the city of Austin, ever saw coming. What happened inside the yogurt shop on that cold December night? And how did one of the most infamous cold cases in Texas history finally find its answer? In late 1977, Los Angeles was terrorized by a string of brutal murders that the press dubbed the work of the “Hillside Strangler.” Victims were found in public places, bound and strangled, their bodies eerily posed. A witness spotted two men with one of the victims, sparking theories that the crimes were a coordinated effort. In episode 371, Jac and Lex delve into the story of the Hillside Stranglers, a case that stumped law enforcement until a phone call from Washington broke the investigation wide open. Hello Hillside Family! Have you ever had an experience of the imagination in which you felt pulled out of one realm and pulled into another? I (Dan) have, and I'm talking about it this Sunday morning in my Week 4 message on Genesis 13-14 from our "School of Faith: The “Tests” and Triumphs of Abraham fall series. I'm sure Pastor Wayne will similarly have strange stories of the past to share as he gives his Genesis 13-14 sermon. As the last sentence indicates, our one church family is meeting in two places for service this Sunday, on the hill and at the park. So, if you have a friend who would feel more comfortable on the hill, invite him/her to join you for church at 2060 Magnolia Way. On the other hand, if you have a friend who would feel more comfortable in the park, invite him/him to join you at 1375 Civic Drive. One way or the other, invite a friend and expect a great morning of praise, teaching, and connection!Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from Genesis 13-14.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZBJse5ZHhrjKvFBfWYRHEiFTeTbtHk9cgpkIf you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe sermon from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, September 28, 2025.

Today, we’re going straight to the source of Hillside Food Forest. In this episode, host Tawnya Bahr is joined by Sam Rayment and Liz Ferrone, the duo who swapped engineering and dietetics for life as regenerative farmers in Putty, New South Wales. From their first backyard aquaponics system in Redfern to raising pigs, cattle, and pasture-raised chickens on their farm, Sam and Liz share the steep learning curve, triumphs, and wild stories that come with building a business from the soil up. This isn’t just a conversation about farming—it’s about setting out to change the future of food. Episode Highlights How an engineer and a dietitian became regenerative farmers with no prior farming background The leap from Sydney city life to establishing Hillside Food Forest in Putty, NSW Why pigs, cattle, and pasture-raised chickens became the heart of their farming system The wild challenges of farm life: escaping pigs, chicken chaos, and floods Building confidence and quality through feedback from chefs at Carriageworks Farmers Market Scaling from small batches to supplying restaurants and wholesale with consistent, premium produce The role of freezing in ensuring quality, consistency, and nationwide distribution Collaborating with LP’s Quality Meats to create a smallgoods range Turning pork fat into value-added products: lard-based moisturisers and pet treats Why regenerative farming means transforming waste into resources Follow Hillside Food Forest:Instagram: @hillsidefoodforest Follow Straight To The Source Food Podcast:Instagram: @stts_podcast Follow Straight To The Source:Instagram: @straight_to_the_source Connect with your hosts: Tawnya Bahr Lucy Allon See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello Hillside Family! I (Dan) am expecting this Sunday morning's worship gathering to be one of more than normal spiritual electricity and I invite you to be there. Consider these “ingredients”: (1) Our whole church family will be together–just one 10:00 AM service on the hill this Sunday; (2) Vacation season is complete so many world travelers will be back; (3) Josh Lund will be on stage with guitar after a week away; (4) Our high school and middle school students will be in the room with us; (5) We're celebrating Communion; (6) We're kicking off a new message series that Peter Turi and I have been thinking about and working on for many months–title to be revealed in the message; and (7) We have an all-church lunch right after the service–Michele is cooking as I write this. My three hopes: (1) You'll come in person to make the singing louder and to help receive visitors; (2) Some of you hiker-types will park offsite to save spots for others; and (3) you'll squeeze in once you enter the sanctuary so everyone gets a seat. In Matthew 9:9–13, Jesus calls Matthew, a tax collector nobody wanted, and gives him a new identity as a disciple who helps change the world. In Matthew's story, we see how Jesus calls each of us: first to Himself, into a real relationship with God. Then into groups where we grow alongside other disciples. And into teams where we join God's world-changing mission. No matter your past or how disqualified you feel, Jesus is still calling you to belong, to grow, and to go.Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Wayne Phillips teaches from Matthew 9:9-13.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZjv4D5ZyAjey9c5FXj3SbJwHVDkX4Xy41VVIf you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, August 31, 2025.

Hello Hillside! You are warmly invited to church this Sunday morning to praise God, re-bond with your fellow disciples, and hear some “mission thoughts as we move ahead,” which is precisely the focus of the messages we are excited to share with you. I (Dan) remind you that church will be happening in two places: our main campus at 2060 Magnolia Way, and Civic Park in downtown Walnut Creek. So, pick a service and join your church family on Sunday morning to hear from King Jesus and be rejuvenated for the week ahead. Whichever service you attend, please be ready to notice and welcome newbies (we're getting them every week). Looking forward to seeing you!Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from Matthew 28:18-20 & Ephesians 4:11-13.If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Last week we saw that all of scripture testifies to the unique love, care, and relationship God has for “the least of these.” This week, we take a real, practical look at the passage and explore ways we can love “the least of these” here at Hillside and in our daily lives. - Pastor Arek O'ConnellSupport the show
Hello Hillside! We're wrapping up our Grace 180 series, Paul's 1 Thessalonians pep talk to the church. We'll be diving into the rich theology packed into his personal and intentional sign-off to this wonderful church, a sign-off that still speaks to us today. It will be a joy to unpack one of the Bible's big words together: sanctification. Get ready to worship, learn, and greet each other with some “holy handshakes” as we praise our great God, the God of peace.Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Stephen Wysong teaches from 1 Thessalonians 5:23-28 (CSB).This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZ50oW5Zt8a9G3szVN5MjIN5oqR3pmxdOms7If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, August 17, 2025.
