Money has a way of reaching places in our lives that nothing else does. It touches our fears, our desires, our relationships, and our sense of security. That's why Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).Jesus wasn't merely offering financial advice—He was revealing something deeply spiritual. Money issues are rarely just about money. They are heart issues. Our financial lives quietly expose what we trust, what we desire, and what we believe will ultimately take care of us.A Lesson From a Hillside in KenyaYears ago, Ron Blue shared a story that reshaped our understanding of stewardship.Ron was sitting on a hillside in Kenya with a local pastor, overlooking the village below. Curious, Ron asked what he assumed was a practical question: “What is the greatest barrier to the spread of the gospel here?” He expected the answer to be a lack of money, transportation, or resources. The pastor didn't hesitate. “Materialism,” he said.Ron was stunned. Materialism? In a village of mud huts? The pastor explained, “If a man has a mud hut, he wants a stone hut. If he has a thatched roof, he wants a metal one. If he has one cow, he wants two.”In that moment, Ron realized something profound: materialism isn't about how much you have—it's about what your heart longs for. If materialism can thrive in a mud hut just as easily as in an American suburb, then money itself isn't the root problem. The heart is.Money as a MirrorMoney is not moral or immoral. It's a tool. But because it touches nearly every area of our lives, it becomes one of the clearest mirrors of what's happening inside us.When we overspend, it may reveal a longing for identity or approval. When we cling tightly to savings, it may expose where we seek security. When we fall into debt, it may reflect impatience or a desire to live beyond God's provision. When we resist generosity, it may reveal fear that God won't come through. In every case, the dollars are secondary. The heart is primary.God's Invitation to FreedomThe good news is that God cares deeply about the state of our hearts—and He invites us into freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from comparison. Freedom from striving. Freedom from the quiet belief that everything depends on us.Over the years of studying Scripture and walking with individuals and families through financial decisions, a few foundational truths have continued to surface.1. God Owns It AllOwnership determines responsibility. If everything belongs to God, we stop clinging to money as if our lives depend on it. Instead, we manage it as stewards—grateful, humble, and free.2. God Is Our ProviderScripture reminds us that God feeds the birds and clothes the lilies—and that we, His children, are worth far more. When we truly believe that, fear begins to loosen its grip.3. Money Is a Tool, Not a TreasureMoney was never meant to carry the weight of our identity or security. It was meant to serve God's purposes—meeting needs, blessing others, advancing the gospel, and reflecting the generosity of the One who gave everything for us.4. Financial Decisions Are Acts of WorshipEvery spending choice, every act of saving, every moment of generosity becomes an opportunity to honor God. When we begin asking, “How can I serve You with this?” money stops being a rival and becomes a means of discipleship.Rediscovering Our Ultimate TreasureThese truths aren't theoretical. They shape every page of our new devotional (coming out next month), Our Ultimate Treasure—a 21-day journey to faithful stewardship. We wrote it to help readers see how deeply biblical principles shape everyday financial decisions. Our prayer is that as people walk through it, they'll experience peace where fear once lived, contentment where comparison once thrived, and generosity where self-protection once dominated.Ultimately, money will reveal what we treasure most. And when Christ is our ultimate treasure, we discover a freedom that no amount of money can ever provide. That freedom isn't found in having more—but in trusting more deeply. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My wife and I are both over 65 and have a financial planner, CPA, and estate attorney. On paper, everything seems in place—but my wife doesn't feel confident. She's really looking for someone to act as a ‘quarterback' for our finances. Is it reasonable to expect a Certified Financial Planner to coordinate everything, including budgeting, or should that role belong to someone else?I pay my credit cards off in full every month and don't have any debt in collections. I received a suspicious-looking notice and didn't click it because I wasn't sure it was a scam.I know many people now take the standard deduction since it's higher, but I've heard that charitable contributions can still be deducted even if you don't itemize. Is that true? I thought that could encourage giving to nonprofits.I owe about $5,500 on my car, with a $185 monthly payment. It's starting to require frequent repairs, and it's probably worth around $4,000. Since the bank holds the title, what are my options? Can I sell it, or am I limited because the car is the collateral for the loan?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. What is the Church—and why does it matter? In this message from our Church Series, we look at what Scripture says about the Church, the real challenges it faces, and the unshakable hope Jesus gives His people. From the bad news of a real enemy who seeks to discourage and divide (1 Peter 5:8), to the good news that Jesus is building His Church and nothing can stop it (Matthew 16:18), this sermon invites us to see the Church not just as a place we attend—but a people we belong to. The Church was never intended to be a place we go, but a people who gather around a great truth...Jesus Changes Everything. OUTLINE:Bad News 1 Peter 5:8Some News 1 Peter 5:8Good News Matthew 16:18 QUESTIONS:When you think of the Church, what comes to mind first-building, service, family, mission? Why do you think that's your first picture? What does the Bible say the church is? (1 Peter 2:9-12)The Bible tells us that we have an enemy who seeks to devour us. Where have you grown weary or lost heart in ministry, community or relationships? What has been discouraging you about church or serving?Where do you see God working in our body? What is one simple step you sense God is calling you to to build up the body at Hillside? SCRIPTURE REFERENCE:Hebrews 10:23-25NEXT WEEK:John 17:13-21

This week at Hillside, Pastor Brad continued our Hidden In Plain Sight series with Part 3: The Hidden King. We looked at how Gods chosen king was often overlooked, underestimated, and hidden from view yet always fully known and appointed by God. Through this message, we were reminded that God doesnt see as people see. He is at work in the unseen places, shaping hearts and raising up His purposes long before they are recognized by others. 3 TakeawaysGod keeps His promisesforever. The King in the manger is the King forever.Dont just celebrate Himsurrender to Him. Happy Saturday morning, Hillside Family! School's out for the holiday, soccer and swimming are over for the season, all our Thanksgiving preparations are complete (well, maybe not). Nevertheless, Saturday's here and I hope it's a day of fun and refreshment. Tomorrow is the first day of the week, the Lord's Day in which we gather and worship him as his beloved family, the first practice of everyone who wears King Jesus' colors and is propelled by his Spirit. Tomorrow's service is going to be rich. It will include singing, a baptism, "God at Work" and an important message critically tied to our mission of "making mature and equipped disciples who share Christ and serve the world." We'll also be sharing the plan for dealing with our great problem of having a packed room. Come early, squeeze in, and expect an encounter with the living God that will leave you encouraged and energized.Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Alejandro Garcia teaches from II Corinthians 9:6-8.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZl8Gg5ZUh65zdLyuNhjn5K55ALbuuxlxlq7If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, November 23, 2025.

Happy Saturday morning, Hillside Family! Of course, you'll have chores to get to today. And homework if you're a student. But I hope you can squeeze all those adult responsibilities into 90 minutes of feverish work and then spend the rest of this autumn day doing whatever fills you up. Maybe a hike in Shell Ridge. Maybe a bike ride in Briones. Maybe trying out a new soup recipe. Maybe a college football game with cheese and crackers to snack on. Whichever way you spend your Saturday though, I hope you'll take a few minutes to think about and prepare for tomorrow. Whereas Saturday is our day, Sunday is the Lord's Day. The day he set aside for his children to meet together as a family to celebrate and hear from him. If you want a head start on the message, I encourage you to read Genesis 22:1-18, the story we'll be reliving in this second to last week of our School of Faith series. One more suggestion: put your “work Bible” by the door so you'll remember to bring it with you tomorrow. Remind your kids to do the same. Make sure to download our free guide, 7 Questions Every Passive Investor Should Ask, here. Key Takeaways Start tax planning early—waiting until tax season puts you in reactive mode Don't structure appreciating assets in a C corp—it can lead to unnecessary tax penalties Asset protection is more than just forming an LLC; structure and exposure matter A tax strategist is proactive—meeting regularly and guiding decisions throughout the year The IRS rewards those who build and invest—use the code to your advantage Topics 1. From Debt to Wealth Building Catrina lost 80% of her income when a major client left and found herself $100K in debt This challenge drove her to learn real estate investing and the tax strategies behind wealth building Paid off her debt in 2 years while building a rental portfolio 2. The CPA vs. Tax Strategist CPAs focus on compliance and reporting what already happened Tax strategists plan proactively to reduce your tax bill before decisions are made Working with a strategist who knows your industry—especially real estate—is critical 3. Avoiding Common Structure Mistakes Many investors set up LLCs without understanding tax treatment options Holding real estate in a C corp is a costly and often irreversible mistake Asset protection includes entity structure, insurance, and understanding exposure risk 4. Planning Beats Panic Most deductions and deferrals (like cost segregation and 1031s) require advance planning Catrina meets monthly or quarterly with clients to stay ahead of key decisions Tax planning should start at the beginning of the year—not at filing time 5. Questions to Vet a Tax Professional Ask about their industry experience and how often they meet with clients Determine whether they offer strategy or just compliance services Ensure they understand your specific investing model (e.g. syndication vs. flipping)

Hello Hillside Family! Here are seven things to do to ready yourself for tomorrow's worship service at 10:00 AM on the hill: (1) Pray now that God's Spirit would move powerfully in our singing, connecting as friends, and listening to his Word; (2) Read tomorrow's passage, Genesis 18:1-16, in your “work Bible” and underline or star any word, phrase or passage that rings a bell in your mind; (3) Put your “work Bible” by the front door so you'll remember to bring it with you tomorrow (and remind your kids to bring theirs); (4) Resolve that tomorrow you'll be on the lookout for new people to say “hi” to; and (5) Pray for God's blessing on each member of your group (whether small, home, Oasis/Kairos/The Well) and aim to fist bump each one tomorrow; (6) Prepare now to give in the offering time as the Lord leads you; and (7) Plan to attend tomorrow's annual meeting immediately after the service and participate with Abraham-like faith. In terms of preparation, that should get you started. Can't wait to see you, and your whole staff feels the same!Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from Genesis 18:9-16.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZUbB95ZI81S3JBsB48cO4DJffU56YEQAiJ7If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe sermon from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, October 26, 2025.

Hello My Fellow Hillsiders! Sunday's rolling around again and the whole staff invites you to join your church family for the 10:00 AM worship service. We are pressing on in our “School of Faith” series on the life of Abraham with an episode in that faith champion's life that I (Dan) particularly like. Here's a thought. If you have a “work Bible” that you mark up and annotate in your daily devotions, I invite you to bring it to church with you. As I unpack the passage, I encourage you to underline or star any part of the passage that gets your intention. Penciling notes and cross references in the margins of your Bible is a great way to grow in your understanding of Scripture. One more thing: Be on the lookout for new people to welcome. They are coming every week!Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from Genesis 18:1-9.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZCd3n5Z3OC75ylRaEyAiE8jyyY8DzvOgtoXIf you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe sermon from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, October 19, 2025.

In Austin, Texas, in 1991, the city was on the verge of becoming the place we know today, a tech hub, a cultural destination. But back then, it was still a big town that felt small, a place that believed itself safe from the kind of darkness that haunted bigger cities. At the Hillside strip mall on West Anderson Lane, there was a little shop called "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" It was a symbol of that every day American life… a place for after-school treats, first dates, and a first job. A place of simple, ordinary innocence. Buton the cold night of December 6, 1991, this symbol of innocence became the scene of an unspeakable crime. An act of such brutal violence that it would steal four young lives and leave a wound on the soul of the city that would fester for nearly 34 years. Amy, Eliza, Jennifer, and Sarah would become permanently etched into the city's memory. Their story became a decades-long quest, not just for a killer, but for the truth. It was a quest marred by false starts, thousands of dead-end leads, wrongful convictions that sent innocent men to prison, and ultimately, a scientific breakthrough that no one, not the investigators, not the families, not the city of Austin, ever saw coming. What happened inside the yogurt shop on that cold December night? And how did one of the most infamous cold cases in Texas history finally find its answer? In late 1977, Los Angeles was terrorized by a string of brutal murders that the press dubbed the work of the “Hillside Strangler.” Victims were found in public places, bound and strangled, their bodies eerily posed. A witness spotted two men with one of the victims, sparking theories that the crimes were a coordinated effort. In episode 371, Jac and Lex delve into the story of the Hillside Stranglers, a case that stumped law enforcement until a phone call from Washington broke the investigation wide open.
