Gardeners' Corner
Gardeners' Corner summer special with Dan Pearson and Jekka McVicar

Gardeners' Corner

After one of the hottest summers on record, David travels to the west of England to explore the private gardens of two renowned plants-people. Acclaimed designer Dan Pearson has spent the last 15 years creating his ‘Hillside' garden with his partner Huw around an old farmhouse in Somerset. He shows David how he works with the landscape rather than imposing upon it, creating a garden for wildlife as well as people. After exploring the herbaceous borders and pond, Dan reveals his experimental sand garden, where he is testing plants for a changing climate. Twenty miles north, at her herb farm near Bristol, Jekka McVicar has spent the summer observing which plants can cope with prolonged heat and drought. Her thymes and oreganos are among the standouts. Jekka doesn't water the garden and finds that self-seeded plants are often the most resilient. Chance seedlings can also produce something completely new, and she shows David a mint discovered in her garden that will bear her name. Both gardeners are adapting to a changing climate, searching for plants that can withstand increasingly long periods of summer drought while still coping with wet winters.

Why You Should Never Stop Reading the Bible - Aaron McRae

You already know the Bible is good for you. So why is it so hard to stay consistent?Drawing from 2 Timothy 3, Pastor Aaron McRae makes the case that Scripture isn't just useful — it's doing something in you every time you engage with it. Teaching. Rebuking. Correcting. Training. Four words that sound simple but carry the weight of a life being shaped from the inside out. This is week two of Hillside's series on Scripture, and it tackles the question behind the question: not just how to read the Bible, but what God is actually trying to accomplish through it. The goal isn't more information. It's not a better morning routine. It's becoming more like Jesus — thoroughly equipped for every good work. It's never too late to start. And you're never finished growing.Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:14–17, Romans 10:8–10, 1 Timothy 4:8, Romans 15:4, Hebrews 12:7–11Resources: Women of the Word — Jen Wilkin; Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy; Experiencing God — Henry Blackaby; Gerry Breshears, "The Bible Is Inspired By God"For the full gathering of this message which includes worship, visit our Youtube channel. Stay Connected With Hillside Community Church.Youtube | https://www.youtube.com/c/HillsideCommunityChurchInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/hillsidechurches/Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/hillsidechurchesWebsite | https://hillsidechurches.com

It's Monday and Lauretta has as her guest, Joyce Duriga, Editor of Chicago Catholic. Today they focus their chat across multiple issues of the Chicago Catholic, specifically the July 12th and the July 26th issues.  Lauretta draws attention to ongoing prayer requests for peace and for the release of Jimmy Lai, she adds on the request for prayers to unmask the Democratic Socialists.  Afterwards she welcomes Joyce and they discuss the “At Peace” memorial which honors the lives lost to suicide and offers a sacred space for prayer and remembrance.  The memorial was dedicated at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside on June 26, 2026.  Lauretta then gives a shout out to Karen Callaway, photographer for the Chicago Catholic who was recognized for her work with the St. Francis de Sales Award on June 19th.   They call attention to the celebration of Mother Cabrini's Birthday and Canonization anniversary that was celebrated at the National Shrine of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini on July 12, 2026 also discussing her contributions.  Their final article focused on the Protection of Children Charter that was implemented to protect children. The charter which was implemented 25 years ago is still going strong and has grown as it provides training and education for knowledge and awareness for prevention of abuse. Lauretta recognizes the upcoming Feast of the Assumption on August 15th and Joyce draws attention to the huge feast held at St. Jerome Croatian Catholic Church encouraging all to go out to and enjoy the feast and procession on Princeton Avenue.  Joyce reminds listeners that they can subscribe to the Chicago Catholic or pick up a copy at your local parish.  For the complete articles and more information, please visit their website at ChicagoCatholic.com. Two listeners. Two encounters with something that briefly lifted the veil and then sealed it back up.On her porch outside Asheville, Reva feels something enter through her ribs and move slowly through her body like she's a corridor it happened to pass through. For forty-five seconds she knows things, that the world we see is a thin film stretched over something unbearably crowded. Then it leaves, taking the knowledge with it, and drains away all but one surviving fragment: there are more of them than there are of us.Then Luca is on a Malvern ridge he's walked since he was a teenager when the slope below him turns black. A flat, perfect, geometric disc cut into the hillside, radiating deep heat from somewhere far down. Then it contracts inward and seals shut with a smoothness that earth should not have. Not like it's gone. Like it's finished.Producer Dom unpacks the dark folklore: the Jain nigoda that fill every empty inch, the Kabbalist Pardes that broke three of the four who entered, the ultra-terrestrial intelligence beneath the surface, and the Roman mundus that opened so what's below could look up.What happens when reality lifts its filter for a moment… and then decides you weren't meant to keep what you saw?A Create Podcast Hosted on Acast. Dear Hillside: Not long ago I read about an unfortunate soul who tried to escape a DUI investigation by dropping off the roadway and scampering for freedom. The problem? The state was Louisiana and the terrain was swamp. A swamp filled with gators. What you imagined happened happened, though it could have been far worse as the man only suffered minor chomp wounds. I'm tempted to laugh but I dare not because if I'm honest I have to admit I've ended up in my own “swamps” from time to time. And to escape the “gators” I've needed the particular grace James prescribes in this week's passage. I (Dan) am looking forward to sharing with you what God gave me in the “cold plunge” verses James 4:1-10. Hello Hillside! Because this sermon on the very famous and challenging passage of James 2:14-26 wrung from me every last drop of wit and wisdom I have (at least until Monday morning when the new delivery arrives), I find I don't have anything clever left for this blurb. So, I'll simply invite you to join your church family for our weekly gathering in the presence of our loving God this Sunday at 10:00 AM. There are two special elements on the Order of Service that Josh Lund lovingly and skillfully put together, but you'll have to join us to find out what they are. Less Than 1% of a $40 Billion Industry Is Black-Owned. Emmanuel J. Waters and Old Hillside Bourbon Are Changing That

Old Hillside Bourbon is a premium spirits brand co-founded by Emmanuel J. Waters, built on the history of Black Wall Street, the forgotten Black jockeys of the Kentucky Derby, and Durham's entrepreneurial tradition. The brand entered into a $40 billion industry where African Americans represent 12% of consumers but less than 1% of ownership. In this episode, Donald Thompson sits down with Emmanuel J. Waters, CEO and co-founder of Old Hillside Bourbon, to unpack how a brand rooted in Black Wall Street, the Kentucky Derby's forgotten Black jockeys, and Durham's rich entrepreneurial history is winning gold medals, breaking distribution records, and building something far bigger than a bottle.Episode Long DescriptionOld Hillside Bourbon was never supposed to work. Bourbon experts told the founders not to launch in North Carolina, one of the hardest control states in the country. African Americans spend nearly $3 billion in alcohol annually and own less than 1% of alcohol companies. Emmanuel had never tasted bourbon before co-founding the company. Then they held their first bottle signing in Durham. The line wrapped around the building. People bought six, seven, eight bottles at a time. They sold 50 cases in a single day, breaking a record in the state they were told would kill their brand. In this episode of High Octane Leadership, Donald Thompson and Emmanuel J. Waters dig into what happens when a brand is built on something more powerful than marketing: a story worth telling. From the history of Black Wall Street in Durham to the forgotten Black jockeys who built the Kentucky Derby, Old Hillside is using bourbon as a medium to recover and celebrate the American stories that have been systematically erased. And along the way, they are winning double gold medals at the largest spirits competition in the world. In Episode 186 of High Octane with Donald Thompson, Waters and Thompson discuss what happens when a brand is built on story rather than marketing spend. The most durable competitive advantage is a story nobody else can tell. Old Hillside Bourbon is the proof.Key Talking Points:History, Heritage, and Homage: How Old Hillside Bourbon built its entire brand strategy around three pillars that no legacy competitor can replicate. The Economics of Black Entrepreneurship: Emmanuel breaks down what that gap costs communities and how to close it.The Durham Moment: How selling 300 bottles in a state they were told would kill their brand became the proof of concept that changed everything. The Gold Medal Standard: Why Old Hillside entered the largest spirits competition in the world, what winning a double gold medal proved, and what it means to compete not as the best Black-owned bourbon but as the best bourbon period. The Invisible Generals Project: How Old Hillside is honoring the first Black father and son duo in American military history with a limited edition bottle that turns history into a collectible.Chapter Markers00:00 - Intro: Emmanuel J. Waters is the CEO and co-founder of Old Hillside Bourbon, a premium spirits brand rooted in the history, heritage, and homage of Black American excellence. A military brat who grew up in Japan and Europe before building a successful career in Silicon Valley's tech industry, Emmanuel came to bourbon not as a lifelong enthusiast but as a storyteller who recognized that the spirits industry was missing the most compelling stories in American history. Under his leadership, Old Hillside has won gold and double gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the largest spirits competition in the world, broken distribution records in one of the country's hardest control states, and built a brand that ships to 49 states and is carried in Whole Foods, Total Wine, and BevMo locations across California. Emmanuel is proof that the best brands are not built on marketing budgets. Dear Hillside: Recently, I was reading about the thousands of pioneers who crossed the United States in wagon trains during the mid-nineteenth century. Think about what they endured: blizzards, grizzly bears, and hostility from locals unhappy with the intrusion. And think of how few Peets Coffees there were along the way. This puts everything in perspective for me.Of course, they made that harrowing journey to reach a better homeland. That is a perfect picture of the Christian life. As followers of Jesus, we too are overlanders. But instead of traveling west, we are journeying toward the new creation--this earth renewed and restored, with the grizzlies so tame we can scratch their bellies.Did you know that many pioneers refused to travel on Sundays? Some wagon trains even split over the issue; the hasty pressed ahead, while the Sabbath-keepers stopped for worship and rest. Interestingly, historical accounts show that the overlanders who rested on Sunday routinely caught up with those who pushed through without a break. In addition to being a command from our loving God, resting and worshiping on Sundays refreshes us for the tasks ahead. So, fellow pioneers--those 'seeking a homeland' in the new creation (Hebrews 11:14)--I invite you to park your wagons, unhitch your horses, and celebrate the Sabbath by coming to church. All your fellow overlanders will be there to greet you, shake your hand, and share stories of the trail (blizzards and bears) from the week before. Using the story of the Great Blondin and the image of the mirror in James 1, this message explores the gap between believing in Jesus and actually following Him.This sermon also looks at Titus 2 and the truth that grace does not produce passivity. Grace trains us to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives, and Christ redeems a people who are zealous for good deeds. This is a message about Christian discipleship, obedience, faith and works, spiritual formation, and what it means to let the Word of God become embodied in everyday life. The question is not just: Do you believe? The question is: Do you believe enough to act?Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Kian Ameli teaches from James 1:22-25.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZ0H2U5ZHFmVzh7vCympMJoFK5LYz5H050xXIf you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, May 17, 2026.

Dear Hillside: I invite you to join your church family (new members and old) for the worship service tomorrow at 10:00 AM. Remember, tomorrow we have one 10:00 AM service (We're now in one service mode until fall when we'll kick it back to two). Friends, let's never forget the priority of worship in our lives as children of God and individual “stones” of his new “temple.” If we've come to view the worship service as mainly about us, let's remind ourselves and our kids that the living God is the audience. Let's remember as well that he's also an “actor” in the event who “acts” upon us through every element (singing, considering the announcements, giving, listening to the word). Every worship service is an opportunity to celebrate him and be changed by him. Looking forward to seeing you for church and the Second Sunday celebration immediately afterwards.Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 10:00 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from James 1:19-21.This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZneEO5ZqvTO2Gj1elXUMybq0zbBUzSJygI7If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/givingThe full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, May 10, 2026.

Hillside, it's Friday at 2:00 PM and I just hit “Send” on an email with my message attached to Jeriah and Laura, two of my highly esteemed staff teammates, without whom, Sunday at Hillside wouldn't be what it is. I'm breathing a sign of relief to be done and enjoying a cup of coffee to celebrate. What a thrill to simmer in James 1:12-15, study it in the original language, research what others have said about it, consider how it fits into the larger picture of James, and then into the larger panorama of the Bible. I learned something significant in my study, prayer, and wrestling this week, and I think when you come to church tomorrow at either 9:00 or 10:45, you'll learn something significant too. It will be something fundamental about life. Something we really can't not know and still move forward into the wholeness Pastor James is so eager for us to move into as we “Just Do The Word.” As excited as I am to share this sermon, I'm more excited to see you and to have everyone else see you. That's because you matter to Hillside: your gifts, your history, your experiences, your wisdom, your voice, and the love God has uniquely shaped YOU to give to your church family. Have a great Saturday and see you tomorrow for our gathering in the presence of the Lord. Who knows who will visit, what will happen, or what new work our loving God will do among us? But it's pretty exciting to think about the possibilities. Come worship with Hillside Covenant Church LIVE at 9:00 & 10:45 AM both online and in person as Dan Seitz teaches from James 1:12-15. This week's sermon notes are available at: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZuwtE5ZVUKYLbXGQUfkNzL8ycLgI0EL2p47 If you are new to Hillside and are looking for ways to get connected and build community, visit our website: https://www.hillsidecovenant.org/ We welcome you to Hillside and are so glad you joined us today! To give in support of Hillside Covenant and its ministries follow this link: https://hillsidecovenant.churchcenter.com/giving The full service from Hillside Covenant Church, Sunday, April 26, 2026.
