Back in March of 1676 during the King Philip's War, something horrific happened on these grounds, and though that may be the beginning of the haunt, it's not the end of the story. More than a century later something happened that made a bad place worse. We're on the trail of ghostly apparitions and disembodied screams at Nine Men’s Misery.
On this episode, we delve into the Bridgewater Triangle, a 200 square mile area in southeastern Massachusetts, that is known to have a huge range of paranormal phenomenon. From UFO's, ghosts, orbs, and other spectral phenomenon, to bigfoot, giant snakes, thunderbirds, & the "little wild man of the woods", the Pukwudgie, this area is filled to the brim with the weird and unexplainable. This area's paranormal anomalies seem to stem from the tragic Native Americans history in the area. From 1675 to 1676, King Philip's War took a bloody & deadly toll on the land, and only ended when Chief Metacom - a.k.a. King Philip - surrendered & was beheaded at Anawan Rock. Many believe that the rock is haunted by the angry spirits of Anawan's warriors, some seeing & smelling smoke in the area as well as hearing shouting in a Native American language. Is this area haunted by the spirits of the Native Americans that lost their lives in the triangle? Is it a portal to a supernatural dimension? Or is it some sort of otherworldly intelligence? Join us to learn more about America's Bermuda Triangle!
King Philip’s War is an event that appears over and over again in books about colonial America. So when you have an event that has been as studied as King Philip’s War has been, is there anything new that we can learn about it by re-examining it in our own time? Lisa Brooks, an Associate Professor of English and American Studies at Amherst College believes the answer to this question is “yes.” And today, she’s going to help us re-examine and re-think what we know about King Philip’s War by introducing us to new people, new ways we can look at known historical sources, and to different ways we can think about what we know about this event with details from her book Our Beloved Kin: A New History of King Philip’s War. Forty years after the Pequot War, a new conflict threatens to tear New England apart. Decades of uneasy coexistence between Puritan colonists and native Algonquians are about to come to a bloody end. This is the story of a complex, transformative, and nearly forgotten war - and of its long shadows.
