On this week's episode of TheFallenState TV, host Jesse Lee Peterson is joined by David Silverman—He is an atheist activist and former president of American Atheists. David opens up about his journey in and out of organized atheism, his current views on religion, and why he believes both sides of the culture war have lost their way. He and Jesse debate the existence of God, morality, faith, and whether true freedom can exist outside of Christian values. The conversation gets lively as they tackle politics, identity, and what David believes is the path forward for a more honest and principled society. This fiery and fascinating exchange is one you won’t want to miss
David Silverman explores the history of The Simpsons from before it existed until now. He talks about animating the hard stuff and making it look easy as well as his love of Burning Man & the tuba.Bio: After graduating from UCLA in 1983, David Silverman worked as a freelance illustrator and animator until, in 1987, he landed a job animating on The Tracey Ullman Show — where The Simpsons began. Animating on all 48 shorts led to David directing the first shows of The Simpsons. Starting with the Christmas Special in December 1989, and then the premiere episode the following month, David soon became Supervising Animation Director and a producer on The Simpsons. All told, he has directed 24 episodes and has won 4 Emmys along the way. When no one was looking, David snuck away from The Simpsons to work at DreamWorks (The Road to El Dorado – co-director), Pixar (Monsters, Inc. – co-director), and Blue Sky (Ice Age, Robots – writing and boarding). But, he came back to the show full-time at the end of 2003 and directed The Simpsons Movie. In 2012, David directed and co-wrote the short film The Longest Daycare about Maggie Simpson, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. And since the Disney acquisition of The Simpsons (via the purchase of Fox), David has directed 10 Simpsons shorts especially for Disney+, as well as several promotional pieces.
This special live edition of Rehash was recorded during Devcon7 in Bangkok, Thailand. The episode was initially set to feature a debate between David Silverman (SVP, Strategic Product Initiatives at Polygon) and Kelvin from Optimism on rollups, but a last-minute change led to an in-depth discussion on rollups, interoperability, and scalability in Ethereum with special co-host Jonah Erlich (Co-founder of Den and previously Rehash guest on S8 E1). David dives into the technical nuances of rollups, including optimistic and ZK rollups, the challenges of decentralization, and Polygon's approach with the AggLayer. He also touches on future developments in Web3, interoperability solutions, and rollup decentralization, accompanied by a spicy twist as David and Jonah sample hot sauces throughout the discussion.

Why Dec. 25? Why so much Christmas conflict & controversy in Christianity's history? Why is Christmas so important to Christianity? And to America? In this episode, I ask my guest, Dr. Carey Roberts, the following questions: ►Why is Christmas such a grand celebration? What does this tell us about Christianity? ►Did it take a while for Christmas to take a central role in Christianity ►What's the difference between recognition and celebration of Christmas ►Did Christmas piggyback on existing Roman pagan traditions? ►How did Christmas enter America's culture? If not the Puritans, then which immigrant group introduced Christmas to America? ►Were there any regional differences in the celebration of Christmas? ►When did U.S. businesses begin to capitalize on Christmas? ►Would President Grant have witnessed a similar Christmas celebration in Boston and Savannah? ►Would George Washington recognize our Christmas? How about Andrew Jackson? Abraham Lincoln? Teddy Roosevelt? ►What happened to Christmas after WWII? ►Is it a bad thing that non-Christians and/or non-practicing Christians celebrate Christmas?

00:08 David Silverman is a professor of history at George Washington University. His most recent book is This Land is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving [Originally recorded in November 2021] The post David Silverman on the real history of Thanksgiving [rebroadcast] appeared first on KPFA.
Over the centuries, Thanksgiving traditions have changed with political, cultural, and religious winds. The holiday's mythic origins were propagated in the mid-nineteenth century, and soon Americans were all celebrating Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. Parades and football games are important pieces of Americana now synonymous with Thanksgiving -- as is the start of the Christmas shopping season. In this episode, historian David Silverman delves into the history of a quintessential American holiday whose development has as much to do with magazine editor Sara Josepha Hale as the Pilgrim Edward Winslow.
November 26, 1970. In Plymouth, Massachusetts, on the 350th anniversary of the Pilgrims' arrival, protestors gather under a statue of Massasoit, the Wampanoag leader who had made peace with the Pilgrims, and partook in the legendary Thanksgiving meal. This protest was organized by Wamsutta Frank James, a Wampanoag activist who wanted to draw attention to the full story of Thanksgiving – a story of fear, violence, and oppression that spanned generations. America's reckoning with the truth of Thanksgiving, James argued, would empower indigenous people to fight for their equal rights. This protest – a National Day of Mourning – continues to this day, now led by James's granddaughter. So what is the true story of Thanksgiving? And why is it so important for us to remember? Special thanks to Kisha James, Paula Peters, and David Silverman, author of This Land Is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving. Burning Man doesn't make itself. The people who share their time and treasure, they create this weird wonder. Each of these people have stories about how Burning Man influenced their lives and how their lives influenced Burning Man. The Flaming Tuba Guy is one of these people. His name is David Silverman aka Tubatron. Andie Grace talked with him about how his animation career started, how his musical career started, how the Mansonian Institute started, how his career with The Simpsons started, and how that influenced his involvement with Burning Man and vice versa. He also volunteers at BRC with the DPW at the Man Pavilion. In today's piece, we're taking a close look at one of the latest innovations in the modular ecosystem: AggLayer, the new interoperability layer stemming from the Polygon team. As Ethereum scaling solutions continue to evolve, AggLayer offers a new approach to making cross-chain interactions smoother, more secure, and more scalable. But, is this the solution we are looking for? Is AggLayer competitive with Superchain? How will the modular community align on a single solution to unify the ecosystem? We sat down with David Silverman, VP of Product at Polygon, who shared some fascinating insights during his interview on The Rollup podcast. He traced Polygon's journey from its early PoS chain, through the launch of zkEVM, to its current focus on building AggLayer—a shared bridge model that emphasizes scaling and native interoperability. One of the core ideas that David mentioned about AggLayer is its ability to support multiple rollup stacks and consensus mechanisms while maintaining security through its "pessimistic proof" model. David pointed out how, in comparison to models like OP Stack's Superchain, AggLayer is designed to work seamlessly across various ecosystems without locking developers into a single protocol. It got spicy...and we pushed back on the security model. However, David reaffirmed that security is a major focus. While AggLayer can ensure chains don't rug one another, users are still responsible for ensuring the security of the individual chains they interact with. This clear boundary of security guarantees sets AggLayer apart, offering builders confidence while still keeping flexibility. Finally, we asked the pressing question of "When mainnet?" and luckily got some alpha from David on the upcoming roadmap for AggLayer. Another great episode from NYC during our chain abstraction focused marathon. Enjoy.

I knew that one of my panelists (Claus) had been raised far-right and since shed those beliefs, but I had no idea just *how* far-right … Strap yourselves in for a very wild, rollercoaster of a conversation. Major CONTENT WARNING: There's talk of bigotry, nazi cults, smuggling, murder, suicide, white supremacy, and more horrific stuff. So please proceed with caution. We discuss the skeptic scene and how rapidly it's devolved, Michael Shermer in particular comes up. I also try to gauge and assess just how fashy Claus's upbringing was, was it overtly and explicitly fash, was it IDWesque in trying to mask the bigotry… or was it a bit of both? Claus peels back the layers and helps us understand what got him out of that bigoted worldview, what kind of damage it did to the people around him, and how he sees echoes of it in present day culty, conspiracist circles. —— Links Eric Ludendorff: “The Nazis distanced themselves from Ludendorff because of his eccentric conspiracy theories In 1926, Ludendorff divorced Margarethe Schmidt and married his second wife Mathilde von Kemnitz (1877–1966). It's winter where we are. What are the coldest, most teeth-chattering, brrrr-iest of all the 100 sanctioned Burning Man events around the world?FrostBurn is one, and its participants make it happen in the dead of winter on purpose, annually since 2008. Subzero temperatures, rain, sleet, snow and sometimes sunshine. Why? Because they can.It kinda makes the media look silly for making a big deal out of a little rain at Black Rock City. When the costumes are nothing less than comfy snow pants, when everyone is on the buddy system to ensure they survive the weather, no energy is wasted on facades and FOMO. Fireworks and wild parties on Christmas Eve? Does this sound strange to you? Well, it wasn't strange to many Americans of our past. Yet, it was highly offensive to many others. How America began to celebrate Christmas and celebrate as it does now, is a multicultural story written by many immigrant groups - from the Pilgrims of the 1620s to the Protestants of the 1960s. And then... there is the story behind December 25th. Why the 25th? Why December? Why not March or April? The latter two more historical sense. In addition to the above question, in this episode, I ask my guest, Dr. Carey Roberts, the following questions: Why is Christmas such a grand celebration? What does this tell us about Christianity? Did it take a while for Christmas to take a central role in Christianity? What's the difference between recognition and celebration of Christmas? Did Christmas piggyback on existing Roman pagan traditions? How did Christmas enter America's culture? If not the Puritans, then which immigrant group introduced Christmas to America? Were there any regional differences in the celebration of Christmas? When did U.S. businesses begin to capitalize on Christmas? Would President Grant have witnessed a similar Christmas celebration in Boston and Savannah? Would George Washington recognize our Christmas? How about Andrew Jackson? Abraham Lincoln? Teddy Roosevelt? What happened to Christmas after WWII? Is it a bad thing that non-Christians and/or non-practicing Christians celebrate Christmas? Dr. Roberts is a Professor of History and Online Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Liberty University. His research interests include early American intellectual and economic history. He has lectured and published widely in the fields of the American Founding, monetary and banking history, American intellectual life, and Southern literature. Chapter 1 Dissect the inner meaning of Team of Teams"Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World" is a book written by General Stanley McChrystal, along with Tantum Collins, David Silverman, and Chris Fussell. It explores the changing nature of warfare and leadership in the 21st century, with a focus on the need for organizational agility and adaptability. In the book, McChrystal draws from his experience as the commander of the Joint Special Operations Task Force in Iraq during the Iraq War. He highlights how the traditional hierarchical approach to leadership and decision-making was inadequate in dealing with the complexity and speed of operations in a rapidly changing environment.McChrystal argues that the conventional "silos" of departments and organizations hinder effective collaboration and information sharing. This approach emphasizes transparency, decentralized decision-making, and a culture of trust and shared consciousness.Through compelling anecdotes and examples, McChrystal offers insights into the challenges faced by organizations in today's interconnected world and provides practical advice on how to foster a more effective, agile, and adaptable team. He emphasizes the importance of communication, trust, and empowering individuals to make decisions, while also encouraging leaders to relinquish control and embrace a more decentralized approach."Team of Teams" offers lessons not only for the military but also for businesses, governments, and organizations operating in complex environments. Author and activist David Silverman is one of the best-known atheists in the United States. He has been a leading voice in the atheism movement for decades, previously serving as President for American Atheists and Executive Director for Atheist Alliance International. He broke ranks with these organizations when they were captured by the “religion of wokeism.” David is now the advisory board chair for Atheists for Liberty, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization promoting secularism, free speech, and enlightenment values. He is the author of "Fighting God: An Atheist Manifesto for a Religious World." He recently published an article in Reality's Last Stand expressing his concerns about atheists aligning with Christians in the fight against woke ideology. On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Rebecca Rettig, Chief Legal and Policy Officer at Polygon Labs, about the current state of crypto regulation around the world. This is the first legal and policy focused conversation we've had on Rehash in over a year - the last conversation we had on crypto regulation was with Katherine Wu from Archetype and Crypto Council for Innovation all the way back in Season 2. The main difference I wanted to touch on in this episode (other than just getting a more current take on where crypto regulation currently stands) is getting a more global perspective on how different countries or regions of the world are looking at crypto. Rebecca talks about key pieces of crypto legislation like MiCA (Markets in Crypto Assets) in the EU and FIT (Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act) in the US and shares her perspectives on which countries have the most crypto friendly policies. We focus most of the conversation on crypto policy, but we do chat a bit on the legal front as well. Rebecca talks about some key court cases we've seen recently in the U.S., such as the Coinbase case, and shares her take on what she believes the SEC's strategy is and what that means for us as people building and working in the industry. Finally we wrap up with some spicy questions from our community, like how to stay out of jail as someone building in web3 or whether crypto will ever succeed in the U.S.Rebecca was nominated by Carsten and voted onto the podcast by Justin Conley, Katelyn Donnelly, Zayi Reyes, Meg Lister, Aaron Soskin, David Silverman, anon, and Carsten.COLLECT THIS EPISODEhttps://www.rehashweb3.xyz/ FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenRebecca: https://twitter.com/RebeccaRettig1TheValueProp: https://thevalueprop.io/ SPONSORSLens Protocol: https://lens.xyzLivepeer: https://livepeer.org LINKSMarkets in Crypto Assets (MiCA)Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT)Crypto435TheValuePropGet involved in policy: Email policy@polygon.technology TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro4:00 The shift from legal to policy7:43 Infrastructure provider vs dapp provider9:29 Non-financial use cases for crypto10:02 High level overview of global crypto policy14:49 Government 101 (US)19:12 What is the SEC's strategy?20:39 People used to hate telephones20:51 SEC's lawsuit against Coinbase24:57 What will happen to DAOs and NFT projects without legal protections?26:36 Best advice for DAOs29:20 Will the US ever embrace crypto?30:56 Wyoming DAO LLCs31:58 Which country's laws apply?33:48 Most important crypto legislation takeaways36:06 How can I help push crypto policy forward?38:37 Will crypto ever succeed in the U.S.?39:25 Best places to live for web3 nomads40:03 How to stay out of jail 42:51 Follow Rebecca DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. In this episode of Sacred Tension, I'm joined by The Satanic Temple co-founder Lucien Greaves to discuss the recent controversy in our religious community. He was recently photographed with an alleged sexual harasser and transphobe, and we reflect on the kind of culture we want to see in The Satanic Temple and why Lucien has responded the way he has to this controversy. In early June 2023, Lucien Greaves took a photograph with David Silverman, a controversial figure in the online atheist space. Silverman posted the photo to Twitter and it was met with outrage both within and outside of the TST community. Lucien has received calls for clarifying statements, and even his resignation. We discuss the principles motivating Lucien's refusal to issue statements, and why he won't publicly denounce Silverman. We address three main concerns about his leadership: 1. The photograph might signify a friendly relationship between Silverman and Lucien. If so, what does that say about our community? 2. The photograph itself wasn't the problem, but Lucien's response on Twitter came off as defensive and unhelpful. 3. Lucien has seemed conspicuously silent on trans issues, so when he is photographed with an alleged transphobe, the LGBT+ community is unsure of where he stands in regard to their rights. This was a challenging conversation to record, and I'm posting it trusting in the goodwill of our religious community. Please note that this episode was originally recorded on the 16th of June and we don't comment on some events that have taken place since then. Lucien Greaves has also written an article addressing this situation, which you can read here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/angry-mob-84882770 Subscribe to my Substack newsletter: https://sacredtension.substack.com/ Become a patron so I can continue my crippling content creation addiction: https://www.patreon.com/StephenBradfordLong Join my Discord server: https://discord.gg/PrDU4zx

A possible recovery solution with Sean Entin and Dr. David Silverman Sean Entin: Sean has had a life that many would call successful: at just 21years old he was already on the cover of the Business Section of the Los Angeles Times and was participating in USC's entrepreneurship program. He has produced 3 released films and other content, and has also worked with Los Angeles Center Studios. When the stock market crashed in 2008, Sean accepted an offer to become a managing partner of Greenhouse Holdings, which focused on financing sustainable residential housing. He and his other partners soon expanded the company into the commercial and military sectors. During this time, Sean was also mentoring Navy Seals transitioning from military to civilian life in the business world. Suddenly, in November 2011, all of these accomplishments no longer mattered. At age 39, Sean suffered a stroke from a massive blood clot in his carotid artery. He was induced into a coma for 10 days and had to undergo several surgeries. Doctors predicted he would never speak, walk, or live a normal life again. I can, I shall, I will. This mantra helped him through the most difficult times in his life. Even with this diagnosis, Sean displayed unwavering strength and spent his next years rehabilitating his soul and body—overcoming the mental barrier of “why me?”—proving to himself and everyone else that he had a purpose in life, that he was chosen for a reason, and that he had the motivation to keep going for even more. After many years of carefully following all kinds of recommendations and advice in order to regain his independence and having failed and succeeded with many of those treatments, Sean now knew what worked and what didn't… He had finally managed to hack his stroke. He was now a different person, full of understanding, compassion, humility, and an example of inspiration in times of trouble. His life had changed. He was starting over… with many more obstacles, but with a motivation bigger than himself: to help others. Thus, the Stroke Hacker Community was born. Many people were inspired by his story, and those who went through a similar journey reached out to him for help and advice. Now, those who have suffered from brain injuries have a place where they can share their stories, their accomplishments, and their own tips for improving their overall health and wellness. Guided by Sean, they have discovered their sense of purpose and hope and are getting closer and closer to their recoveries, their independence, and everything they dream of getting back. Dr. David Silverman: I have a purpose-driven, home-based & international business, fueled by an exquisite & patented health breakthrough through which I help people live (and thrive and earn) to their full potential. Dr. Silverman began investigating ASEA REDOX Cell Signaling Supplement. Soon he was sharing it with family and friends. He says that the secret to success with this business is developing personal belief in four things: The product, the company, network marketing, and yourself. “If you can't believe in any one of these four areas, it's going to be much harder for you to win at this. If you're weak in any of these aspects, you've got to work on your own belief first, before you can expect someone else to believe in what you're sharing with them.” One way to grow stronger in all these areas, according to Dr. Silverman, is to attend a corporate convention. “You'll meet other people and hear their stories,” he says. “You'll meet the founders and see what good men they are. You'll really start to understand the company as a whole and see the big picture and the vision.” Beyond that, Dr. Silverman has the following daily suggestions for associates. “First, work on your own self-motivation,” he says. “Be coachable. Be a genuinely nice person. Understand upfront that you will need a lot of patience because success won't happen overnight. If you are consistent with your commitment and you listen to your upline and you work hard, then no matter how long it takes, you'll get there. You'll reach your goals and change lives, starting with your own.”
