Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I'm RW Estela: Since 1991, I've been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU's longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. When pandemics do not interfere, he does the Triple Crown of Maine open-water ocean swims (Peaks to Portland, Islesboro Crossing, and Nubble Light Challenge) and the Whitewater Downriver Point Series of the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. RW is the father of two and the grandfather of three and lives with his partner Kathleen of 37 years and their two Maine Coons in Orono. EPISODE #1141 THE CHARLES DICKENS' CONSPIRACY Richard welcomes a filmmaker and researcher who delves into groundbreaking findings that suggest Charles Dickens plagiarized the idea for A Christmas Carol from Mathew Franklin Whittier, the lesser-known younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. After uncovering a past-life connection to Whittier, the researcher reveals how A Christmas Carol was originally a spiritualist story co-written by Mathew and his wife, Abby, before Dickens rewrote it into the iconic ghost story. Through meticulous research, they provide compelling evidence that Dickens borrowed heavily from Mathew's work, offering a new perspective on this beloved holiday classic. GUEST: Stephen Sakellarios has studied reincarnation for over 50 years, beginning with the teachings of Eastern Mysticism at age 19. He focused on death and dying while obtaining a master's degree in counseling, in 1982. In 1997, he began work on an independent documentary entitled "In Another Life: Reincarnation in America," which was released in 2003, and is still distributed to universities through Films Media Group. Two years later, in 2005, he discovered a possible past life as his own, as an obscure 19th-century author named Mathew Franklin Whittier. The following year, he recorded in his public blog the feeling that Mathew might have had something to do with the writing of "A Christmas Carol." In 2009 he began researching that question in earnest, and after 15 years of delving into primary sources, he is convinced that Dickens plagiarized that story from Mathew and his wife, Abby, in 1842, after which he hastily commercialized it in time for Christmas of 1843, to make desperately-needed cash. Stephen has sought to prove that Charles Dickens could not possibly have written the original version of "A Christmas Carol," and at the same time, to prove that Mathew and Abby Whittier were plausibly the real authors. 271 – How do you celebrate the spiritual meaning of Christmas? The world tries to make us forget about the real reason we celebrate Christmas with its focus on the excess materialism of the day.To keep a spiritual approach to Christmas, the best place to start is focusing on Jesus and all he taught and did. This week I talk about ways to discover the deeper spiritual meaning of Christmas.Start with gratitude for Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and everyone in the Christmas storyFollowing Jesus's example every day of the yearNot over-emphasizing the all the running around and festivitiesFinding quietude during the Christmas season to remember Christ's comingReading out loud the Christmas story from Matthew and LukeBe more spiritually minded yourselfWhat would Christmas look like if you took away all the outward celebrations and focused only on Christ? In this episode I share a poem, The Mystic's Christmas*, written by John Greenleaf Whittier, an American poet of the 19th century. It's about an elderly monk who was not joining the other monks in the way they celebrated Christmas. When they asked why, he admitted he used to join in all the festivities, but now he celebrated spiritually in his heart. I wish you a very Merry Christmas season and I hope you discover this year, a whole new and deeper spiritual sense of what Christmas is all about. Is there any way you can de-materialize, even in some small way, how you celebrate Christmas? The world is desperately crying out for this spiritual sense of Christmas you have to offer. EPISODE #1131 LOVE BEYOND LIFETIMES: A REMARKABLE REINCARNATION STORY Richard welcomes Stephen Sakellarios, filmmaker, author, and reincarnation researcher, reveals his extraordinary claim: he believes he lived a past life as Mathew Franklin Whittier, the younger brother of famed poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Through meticulous research, Sakellarios argues that Mathew, a hidden literary talent, was the true author behind works long attributed to Charles Dickens. But the mystery doesn't end there—Stephen also shares his powerful spiritual connection with "Abby," his past-life wife, which he uncovers in his book Loving Abby in Truth and Spirit. In this episode, Stephen dives deep into the evidence, memories, and emotional challenges he's faced in uncovering his past life and its connection to some of the most beloved stories in literature. Tune in for an unforgettable journey into the realms of reincarnation, memory, and legacy. GUEST: Stephen Sakellarios is a filmmaker, author, and expert in reincarnation research. He created the documentary *In Another Life: Reincarnation in America*, a detailed exploration of reincarnation beliefs in Western culture, and he also manages an extensive reincarnation website he launched in 1998. Sakellarios has studied reincarnation since 1973, drawing from both Eastern mysticism and Western approaches. His work includes the book *Matthew Franklin Whittier in His Own Words*, where he investigates his own past-life claim as the younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Additionally, he recounts his spiritual reconnection with “Abby,” his past-life wife, in *Loving Abby in Truth and Spirit*. Beyond his authorship, Sakellarios has a background in counseling and has produced video work for organizations like the Meher Spiritual Center. Recorded March 27, 2024 - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the most popular and successful poet of his day. Living in Cambridge, Massachusetts he was a member of the literati that made Boston the literary hub of the country; Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and John Greenleaf Whittier were all Longfellow friends or associates. But 20 miles west of Boston was a small town filled with its own poets, writers and philosophers. Concord, Massachusetts was home to not only Ralph Waldo Emerson, but Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the Alcott family; they too all had a deep friendship or close association with Longfellow. Concord public historian Richard Smith explored the friendships between Longfellow and the Concord writers in this talk, sharing his opinions about their lives and writings.

He urges the listener to not dwell on past mistakes and instead embrace the learning opportunities they provide. Reinforcing this point, Nathan quotes John Greenleaf Whittier and Henry David Thoreau about regret. Nathan discusses the choices we make, and the importance of accepting responsibility for these choices to gain personal power and influence outcomes. He suggests that, instead of trying to erase past experiences, it is healthier and more fruitful to make those experiences meaningful. Nathan concludes with a reflection on the story of the baby prophesied by Isaiah, who grew to suffer for humanity, and offer hope and healing. He encourages listeners to look forward with faith, learning from past mistakes, and celebrate hope this Christmas.00:01 Introduction: Contemplating Regret00:40 Understanding the Downward Spiral of Regret01:40 The Dangers of Dwelling on 'It Might Have Been'02:21 The Complexity of Choices and Regret03:37 Taking Responsibility for Our Choices04:31 Dealing with Regrets of Unmade Choices05:11 Turning Regret into a Learning Experience05:49 The Importance of Moving Forward from Regret06:09 Finding Meaning in Loneliness and Difficulty06:39 Finding Hope in the Story of Christmas08:02 Conclusion: Embracing the Future with HopeI can help you get where you want to go. Grace is on the table. With generations of Christ's followers, we come to the Lord's table with profound gratitude for grace. How will this time of gratitude change the way we live? Paul taught the Corinthians that our gratefulness for grace empowers us to overcome sin. Message based on 2 Corinthians 4:15; 1 Corinthians 10:13-17Quotes:Tim Chester writes:  Paul talks about “the table of the Lord” in 1 Corinthians 10:21. We are hosted by Jesus. In the New Testament it is not the bread that is the host (of Jesus) but Jesus who is the host (of us). So the host is not on the table but at the table—it is, after all, the Lord's Table. For Jesus is present by the Holy Spirit, and he invites us to eat with him as an act of friendship and a sign of love. The people who serve are simply Jesus's way of getting the bread from the table into your hands.J. I. Packer:  Christian fellowship is two-dimensional, and it has to be vertical before it can be horizontal…The person who is not in fellowship with the Father and the Son is no Christian at all, and so cannot share with Christians the realities of their fellowship.Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Baptism incorporates us into the unity of the Body of Christ, and the Lord's supper fosters and sustains our fellowship and communion … in that Body.Robert Holdain: Until a sin is mortified in conscience it cannot be mortified in the flesh." Until I know I am pardoned by the grace of God, I have no strength to fight the sin. But when I know God has forgiven me, he releases me from the guilt of my sin, and the power to fight it comes.John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a poem about Jonathan Walker"Then lift that manly right hand, bold ploughman of the wave! Its' branded palm shall prophesy, ' Salvation to the slave'."Duane Brooks: Jesus had scars in his palms, too. By grace, we live in the freedom of God's forgiveness. To discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist
